Doppelganger EP
  1. Codex Empire - "Ourang Medan" (5:26)
  2. Paul Birken - "Slipper Dimple" (5:45)
  3. NX1 - "NF1" (6:41)
  4. Stave - "Shove" (4:40)
Review: More abrasive and pitch black electronics from France's Nocturnal Frequencies camp. Their new various artists EP sees them debut on vinyl after a series of great digital and cassette releases - and in rather frightful fashion indeed! From the aufnahme + wiedergabe affilated Codex Empire who presents the brooding "Ourang Medan", the guttural analog intensity of American veteran Paul Birken's "Slipper Dimple" comprising the A side- the latter one's a respectful tribute to the old school techno sound. On the flip, a more direct and dancefloor oriented techno represents here- yet be assured that it's as bleak and metal-edged as expected on "NF1" by Spanish duo NX1. One half of Talker Jonathan Krohn aka Stave completes the carnival of lost souls here - reaching right for the jugular on his fierce IDM epic "Shove" reminiscent of the British Murder Boys' sound.

  5. Nocturnal Emissions - "Even The Good Times Are Bad (1983)" (4:33)
  6. Innyster - "Todis" (6:08)
Review: Contort Yourself reaches its sixth installment with yet another era spanning gathering of post-punk and industrial oddities for the most deviant of dancefloors to digest. In the contemporary corner we have Penelope's Fiance, a promising industrial artist from Greece. Meanwhile on the B-side, Nigel Ayers as Nocturnal Emissions takes us back to 1983 with the utterly chilling "Demon Circuits Bloodbath" and "Even The Good Times Are Bad". L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli steps up as U202 to remix "Even The Good Times Are Bad" as a death march of malevolent percussion.

Review: When Piska Power isn't studying to become a doctor, he is making modular synth sounds to melt your mind. This six track mini LP is a comprehensive overview of his work: pulsing drum rhythms, clicks, shapeshifting arps that are bubbling, blistering backed with dehumanised vocals that are skewed and stretched. This is an avant-garde take on experimental noise and industrial that dips into techno, EBM and coldwave from a perspective that draws you into this unique world and keeps you there. A superbly strong collection.

Review: Los Angeles based producer Alex Gray aka D/P/I of CHANCEIMAG.es returns, this time on French imprint Shelter Press with more avant electronics excursions on the Composer LP. Thee seven sound collages are said to be an experiment in rhythm, where human error is introduced to basic sounds (such as a djembe or conga) via midi controllers, introducing complex processes and effects which naturally developed into compositions. Gray himself hopes his album "can act as a beacon of creativity for future generations, who are currently being completely saturated by marketing content for products and media that will do nothing but confuse and distract them.

Review: There is real beauty and hope in the dark chaos of Petbrick's new album for Rocket Recordings. It is a compelling insight into the unhinged and occult minds of Wayne Adams (Big Lad and Iggor Cavalera (Soulwax) that manages to convey a real sense of musical lunacy and brain shredding electronic frenzy. Guests like Full Of Hell's Dylan Walker on "Radiation Facial" or Integrity's Dwid Hellion on "Some Semblance Of A Story" add more intensity and urgency to this most caustic of records. Dystopian and invigorating at every turn, this is treacherous music for treacherous times.

Review: Margaret Chardiet's semi-regular album outings as Pharmakon are always worth a listen, if only to recoil at the intensity of her unsettling blends of buzzing industrial noise, paranoid vocal screams, throbbing aural textures, forthright mangled guitar riffs and rusty, razor-sharp power electronics. "Devour" is the artist's fourth album for Sacred Bones and her first new set for two years. It explores similar sonic territory to its predecessors, offering claustrophobic, mind-mangling soundscapes that are creepy, disturbed, awe-inspiring and sonically challenging in equal measures. In some ways, calling out individual tracks as highlights seems pointless: this is a singular, ever-changing work that sees Chardiet escort us on a nightmarish journey through experimental extremes.

  7. Departure Stage (6:44)
  8. Known Space
Review: Roly Porter's recent output finally earned him a place in the big league; his second LP, Third Law, comes through courtesy of New York's excellent Tri Angle label, and the mighty "4101" - released as a single back in Novemeber, paves the way for an album full of suspense and surrealism. This is no job for anyone looking for peace or meditation, but rather one for the more open-minded. "Mass", for instance, unleashes boulders of bass and noise over glitchy half-beats, whereas the tunes like "High Places" sound like the inside of an interstellar cruiser, and the sublime "In System" reminds us of Apex Twin's strand of ambient...a cold, pensive bundle of euphoric energy. Recommended.

Review: John Whybrew, Ian Sharp and Dean Piavani are Portion Control. In case you didn't know about them, they're one of the most influential industrial bands to have come out of the 1980's and have also been a massive inspiration for the likes of Depeche Mode and Skinny Puppy. Moreover, it's their signature brand of rhythmic, mostly instrumental post-punk which has made the music of Craig Leon and others so sought after these days. Originally out in 1982 on Phaze Records, these ten tracks are timeless pseudo-techno jams which will always be coveted by DJs, musicians and samplers alike. Cop it now because the original is rather pricey!

Flash Across The Intervals (LP + insert limited to 250 copies)
Cat: AF 18. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. Multi-mendy 1-3 Recombined (18:12)
  2. Transkak Flow 1 (6:58)
  3. Performance To A Harsh Critic (5:01)
  4. The Bells Mosaic (5:02)
Review: Powell's work has been described as 'jerky electro' by some critics, which isn't to suggest he's a jerk. Instead, it's because things often sound, and feel, unpredictable. Rhythmic patterns aren't quite what they seem, if they even really exist, time signatures can jump around without warning and production rules are, generally, given short thrift. Nevertheless, his work is always pleasing to hear.

Flash Across The Intervals takes that mantra and reduces it to the bare minimum, and yet there's nothing restful about the tracks. In fact, as the staccato distortions and whirs of the opener shows, there's actually a lot happening. 'Performance To A Harsh Critic' is perhaps the most track-y track, in terms of construct, but even this is really about experimenting with textures of noise, with highly sensory results.

  5. So Goddamn Gaunt
Review: Since debuting as Prostitutes in 2011 on his own StabUDown label, experimental noise and techno artist James Donadio has established his confrontational style with a slew of releases. This year alone has seen Donadio add two EPs on Avian's Mira sub-label and an album for John Elliott's Spectrum Spools label to a discography that already includes Diagonal, Digitalis and Opal Tapes. This Nouveauree 12" finds Donadio adding the prospering Night School to his collar, and you may think he makes a strange bed fellow with The Space Lady or Molly Nillson on the UK experimental label but Donadio's singular sonic fingerprint still feels strangely at home. Night School suggest Nouveauree to be "a purge, a palette cleanser," but it also feels like some of Donadio's most gratifyingly floor focused material. You can almost visualise someone like Powell giving it the screw face as he drops "Punk In The Street" in one of his sets.

Review: It would be fair to say that Dominick Fernow is one of experimental music's more esteemed and prolific exponents. So far this year, Fernow has issued albums as Exploring Jezebel, Vatican Shadow and Prurient for Blackest Ever Black, Modern Love, and Profound Lore respectively. The latter, Frozen Niagara Falls, makes the transition to triple vinyl having first been released on CD and cassette format back in May. Cited by many as Fernow's most accomplished album to date, it's easy to see why here with Frozen Niagara Falls an end-of-days mixture of intense white noise, snarled, often screamed vocals, and fizzing, industrial electronics. Occasional bursts of crystal clear electronic melodies and bittersweet ambience offer brief respite from the madness.

Cat: HOS 598LP. Rel: 23 Apr 18
  1. In The Ashes Of Science We Fall (15:04)
  2. In The Peeling Birch We Remain (15:57)
Review: Unknowns was first offered as a super-limited cassette bundled with a rare boxed version of Dominick Fenrow's 2017 Prurient album, Rainbow Mirror. Here presented on vinyl for the first time, it sees the prolific Fenrow join forces with Skin Crime man Patrick O'Neill (Hanged Man's Orgasm was an alias he used in the late '80s and early '90s), writer Scott Bryan Wilson and synthesizer player and all round studio don Kris Lapke. There are two 15-minute plus epics to enjoy, both of which mix dystopian noise and heavily processed samples with skewed synthesizer parts, '90s modem noises and barely audible excerpts of the ever entertaining Fenrow reading Wilson's expressive prose. For the record, it's the B-side cut that's the most apocalyptic.
