  2. A Hand - "Modern Cage" (7:33)
  3. Gamma Intel - "Note To My Love" (6:02)
  4. Vactrol Park - "Dense & Ragged" (7:03)
Review: Details Sound is a record label curated and run by Giuseppe Magistro and Matteo Fabbri, that has brought us releases by the likes of Olfactory Nerve, Luca Garino and Klankman. Their latest is this fantastic four track various artist compilation titled The Spirit Of The Age Vol.1. It features Anatolian Weapons with the the steely slow burning aggression of 'A Series Of Changes', label staple A Hand serving up some celestial and contemplative IDM on 'Mode4rn Cage', Gamma Intel's restrained fury as heard on the body bashing bass of 'Note To My Love' and the real stars of the show here - Vactrol Park. The London-based duo giving their very best on the B side with the immersive analogue ritual rites of 'Dense & Ragged'.

  3. Dystopia (6:40)
  4. Defected Logic (5:15)
  5. Destroyed System (5:47)
Review: Now we're really talking. Asymetric80's Chaos Theory feels like you're standing on the edge of, or possible running away from, The End of Days. A particularly punchy, driving shot of menacing electro administered straight to the adrenal gland, it's the twisted and dark science fiction future you've always wanted to dance and get sweaty in, but probably never dared buy a ticket for.

Five tracks of proper over-bite worthy floor-filling stuff, it's a hard-edged marriage of Italo, industrial, rave and something else that gives it a certain tech noir feeling. At its most euphoric, 'So The Echo' could almost remind some of dark techno-trance heydays gone by, a storming assault of sonic lasers and forward momentum. At its most evil, the breaks and refrains of 'Destroyed System', with everything between a similar joy to behold.

  3. Sentier (7:13)

  5. Take Notes (6:32)
  6. Geezer (6:19)
Review: Boris Barksdale's Eternal Remorse originally saw the light of day on Portugese label Eye For An Eye as a digital release back in 2018, and now it's getting a vinyl pressing. A physical release feels appropriate for this pointedly dusty release, which leans in on synthwave influences to create a thoroughly dark and gnarly atmosphere. '5.0.5' steps out on a tough, dishevelled rhythm section, with seriously degraded synths falling apart behind the jackhammer drums. '7.0.8' takes the intensity up a notch, hitting with an industrial bite, while 'Sentier' channels even more of that Ministry-flavoured malaise with its disturbing yelps and screams. 'Sramota' has the hallmarks of a mid 80s bedroom beatdown from a blackened soul, 'Take Notes' delivers yet more pounding, percussive punishment, and 'Geezer' rounds things off with a bleak and troubled slab of EBM dragged from the underworld to stalk amongst all nightcrawlers and ne'er-do-wells.

  4. Down My Spine (5:03)
Review: London-based Texan via Spain, Chupacabras continues to ramp up his ice cold output with another clutch of neck-snappers. Raw analogue funk from start to finish, the EP takes off where his L.I.E.S EP left us as 'No End' kickstarts the collection of thumping electro and brutalist grooves with a Black Strobe-like bass wobble and tempestuous drums. It's backed up by the robotic motion and gritty sheen of 'Growing Pains', the b-boy style drums of 'Basic Programm' and the final heave-ho of the set: 'Down My Spine', an overdrive dark electro jam you could just as easily picture Dave Clarke playing it as you could DJ Stingray. Savage.

  3. Expectations Are The Devil (Years Of Denial remix) (8:05)
  4. Many An Idle Stone (Dino Sabatini remix) (5:38)
Review: In 2019, Southern Lights released the debut album of audio-visual artist Lost Few, fusing his relationship with the physical form including found sounds from the Australian wilderness and disturbed electronics, processed instrumentation and sub-bass experiments. Those sonic experiments have been given the remix treatment by a handful of contemporary artists working within the fringes of techno. Manchester's Karim Maas provides his dark, ritual touch to "Indecision", Vohkinne dials up the velocity on "Quietly We Wish For Silence" with his Extended Thrust Mix, Years of Denial deliver a stunning interpretation of "Expectations Are The Devil" straddling industrial and EBM, while Dino Sabatini closes the release with a serene and introspective remake of "Many An Idle Stone".

Burgercome (7" + insert)
Cat: FC 03. Rel: 27 Apr 21
  1. Burgercome
  2. Stuck
Review: The 140+ BPM revolution race with scarcely a look in the rear view mirror. Malaizy here dropping two tracks that show just how wild and weird stuff can get in this part of the dance music spectrum. 'Burgercome' itself has hints electroclash, juke, ghetto tech, footwork, and EBM, without fully committing itself to any of those things by way of a DIY punk on speed in a Parisian warehouse party vibe.

Over on the flip, 'Stuck' is an entirely different beast altogether, which probably isn't that surprising considering the unique and particularly niche nature of the opening tune. Rather than setting a break neck pace, instead we descend into a staccato amalgamation of white noise, distorted drums and inaudible human murmurings.

Review: Almost two years after the second volume landed in record stores, Oliver Ho AKA Broken English Club has finally delivered the third and final instalment in his White Rats trilogy of albums. In keeping with its predecessors, the album sees Ho exploring a mixture of politically charged ambient compositions, post-apocalyptic electronic soundscapes, mind-altering industrial grooves and gnarled, post-punk influenced workouts. As you'd expect given Ho's track record, the album sounds authentically dystopian, updating the Cold War era paranoia of early industrial music for a new century. Highlights include the acid-flecked industrial-electro number 'Alone In The Hunt', the strobe-lit EBM heaviness of 'The Kill', the creepy ambience of 'The Burned The Villages' and the clandestine, slow-motion stylishness of 'Love Cuts Deeper'.

BN9Drone
BN9Drone (CD)
Cat: CABS 32CD. Rel: 23 Apr 21
  1. Track 1
Review: There have always been two distinct threads to Richard H Kirk's work as Cabaret Voltaire, with or without his former collaborators Chris Watson and Stephen Mallinder. There's the clanking, moody industrial funk that marked out the band's work in the 1980s - brilliantly resurrected on last year's Kirk-only set Shadow of Fear - and even more clandestine, beat-free releases that explore the more paranoid end of the ambient and experimental electronica spectrum. BN9Drone, Kirk's second Cabs LP of 2021, swims in these murky waters, with the veteran Sheffield producer layering up dark, foreboding chords, gravelly electronic textures, droning noise and Robin Rimbaud style snippets of overheard telephone conversations and police radio chatter. It's unsettling at times but also utterly captivating, as if you're listening to a distant disaster unfold in real time.

Review: The Cabaret Voltaire resurgence continues, not that Richard H. Kirk's groundbreaking electronic project every went away in the eyes and ears of disciples. Nevertheless, 2020's Shadow of Fear album was his first in 26 years under the celebrated moniker (now a solo show), and so it's no wonder people are lapping up every wave and ripple that record created.

Enter BN9Drone, the latest offspring to arrive after the long form, and a release that may or may not be inspired by a drone flying over the BN9 postcode in Brighton, UK. If that was the catalyst, we want to know the make and model of the drone, because it certainly makes some pretty out-there noises. Opening on what sounds like aural evidence there is life up there in the stars, it's classic Cab Vol art-as-noise, noise-as-art, atmospheric stuff, so let's leave it at that.

Review: After eight long years, Stefan Nemeth and his long-time Innode collaborators Steven Hess and Bernhard Breuer have finally delivered the follow-up to 2013's Gridshifter. While that was nominally a solo set by Nemeth with Hess and Breuer contributing drums and percussion to various tracks, Syn was a genuine collaborative effort shaped by the constant exchanging of 'sounds, fragments and arrangements.' The result is an impressively moody affair that sits somewhere between doom-laden electronica, the percussion-rich industrial intensity of Test Pressing, post-punk experimentation and the more angular, otherworldly end of IDM. It's genuinely a set that defies easy categorization, but as an album it's all the better for that.

Review: Downwards' latest release shines a light on Melbourne's famed experimental music scene by bringing together tracks from two of the city's most interesting artists. On side A there's a chance to savour all four tracks from Bonnie Mercer's previously cassette-only release Old Moon, New Moon, with the experienced artist combining elements of desert rock (fractured, discombobulated, fuzz-toned guitar textures) with droning tones, reverb-laden samples and gentle washes of ambient colour. Over on the flip YLP - the duo of Joshua Wells and Harry Schwind- take over, delivering a suite of suitably cosmic tracks heavily influenced by Spacemen 3, Suicide and Sun City Girls.

Review: An album title either throws you off the sonic scene or is so apt you couldn't imagine it ever being called anything else. Unemployment Line Disco is the latter - Modern Ruin summoning the spirits of Black Devil Disco Club, Andrew Weatherall and Suicide, among others, to deliver an ode to Arturo Micro brute synthensizers, and the beats that have always hidden in between the dominant dance genres.

As punk as it is electro as it is New Wave as it is coldwave as it is something else, it's a dark and reverb-soaked space that's equal parts dystopian and sweaty venue. From the strange, unsettling broodiness of 'Monkey', through the stepping, arpeggiated chaos of 'Cement Dust', onto the tracking, nightmarish scapes of 'Nothing Blues' and the rockabilly chug of 'Permanent Vacation', it's as much a reminder of the clubs we want to be back inside as it is the hopelessness of pandemic life.

Review: Reiko Omura and Tori Kudo have been part of the Japanese avant-garde music scene for over four decades. Known for their exploits in outfits such as El To Arnat, Maher Shalal Hash Baz or Guys & Dolls, it was as Noise where something truly awe-inspiring happened in the late '70s and early '80s. Described as a noise-drone-improv group, they began under the name Worst Noise and with a rotating line up. The group eventually stabilised as a duo, with Kudo on organ and Omura on vocals, guitar and trumpet. On their debut release Tenno, originally released in 1980 on Engel Record, Kudo's 'extended organ-based dirges' merged with the fragile, meditative harmonies found in Omura's voice.

Review: If you're not familiar with the EBM of 1980s Belgium, a sound born out of industrialised landscapes and seemingly determined to live in the shadows, with only fleeting specks of light piercing the thick and abrasive arrangements, then Vomita Negro probably won't mean a great deal. With this in mind any words on the latest album - actually a collection of near-forgotten work from the past - should probably start with a brief introduction.

The outfit formed back in 1983, and have built both a huge discography of menacing, darkroom, clenched-teeth tunes since then, along with a significant cult following and mythology. Sonic psychodramas abound, Entitled is certainly a case in point. Comprising tracks written during their formative years, never before released, it's an unsettling and visceral thing that proves wholly inescapable from the off.
