All I Do
All I Do (7")
Cat: AHS 019. Rel: 02 Jul 20
  1. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit vocal) (4:05)
  2. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit instrumental) (4:05)
Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

  1. Turn It Up (7:48)
  2. Turn It Up (instrumental Disco mix) (7:49)
Review: Afrosynth Records has become renowned for its deep dives into the colourful, synth-heavy world of original South African disco, boogie and bubblegum. They're at it again here, offering up a fresh pressing of "Turn It Up" by Adaye, a one-off studio project featuring members of legendary South African 'supergroup' Stimela. This edition replicates the track listing of the original 1983 release, beginning with the A-side vocal version - a driving slab of bubblegum boogie laden with James Brown style lead vocals, colourful synth sounds and delay-laden drum machine beats. The flipside "Instrumental Disco Mix" naturally strips out all but the backing vocals, instead showcasing the intricacy of the studio outfit's Prince-style guitar riffs, jaunty bass and kaleidoscopic synthesizer flourishes.

  1. Desire (4:13)
  2. Casa Fuerte (4:09)
Review: Copies of Francisco Aguabella's 1977 album "Hitting Hard" are not only extremely hard to come by, but also suitably pricey when they do come up for sale online. Fret not - Dynamite Cuts are here to help. They've decided to reissue two of the Afro-Cuban jazz/funk fusion set's most potent track, thus saving us the need to fork out the best part of 800 pounds. A-side "Ramon's Desire" - a cover of a Ramon Robes song - is suitably breezy, jazzy and positive, with glistening guitar and vibraphone solos combining wonderfully with a soulful vocal. Flipside "Casa Fuerte", on the other hand, is an all-action, high-tempo Afro-Cuban jazz dance treat, with high-octane piano solos rising above a Tito Puente style rhythm track.

Cat: SG 039. Rel: 08 May 17
  1. Tu Jamas (4:14)
  2. Solo Tu Amor (4:55)
Review: Although best known as the lead singer of well-regarded Japanese funk-soul band O.A.S.B, Amy Akaoka has long dreamed up recording a salsa album in the style of '60s and '70s pianist and bandleader Larry Harlow. This tasty two-track 7" single is her first release in the style - the album will appear later in the year - and is as summery, breezy and life affirming as you'd expect. She begins with "Tu Jamas", where male backing vocals, jaunty pianos and her own passionate lead vocal ride a sweat-soaked salsa rhythm. Turn to the B-side for the horn-heavy delight that is breezy salsa shuffler "Solo Tu Amor". Naturally, both are hugely authentic to the style of salsa championed by Harlow.

  3. Afro Discoteca (Jolly Mare Lifting) (5:44)
  4. Afro Darkness (LUCA Quirky version) (6:03)
Review: Back in 2017, Four Flies Records unearthed and released a previously unheard "Afro-cosmic funk" EP from Italian soundtrack and library music legend Alessandro Alessandroni. Three years on, they've decided to give the 1978 recording the remix treatment. Bolissa and guests Calibra 35 kick things off with a densely percussive, out-of-this-world take on "Afro-Voodoo", before Pad re-imagines "Afro Darkness" as a chugging chunk of beatdown-disco laden with colossal chords, arpeggio bass and intergalactic electronics. Over on side B the "Jolly Mare Lifting" version of "Afro Discoteca" is a veritable leftfield disco stomper notable for its low-slung bass and spacey Moog lines, while Luca's "Quirky Version" of "Afro Darkness" is the kind of hallucinogenic, Marimba-tinged number that you can imagine Daniele Baldelli playing at the Cosmic Club circa 1981.

Cat: OGR 799COLOUR. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. Midnight In Havana (5:18)
  2. Kinky Afro Cuban (4:53)
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Review: During the days of Dingwalls' legendary jazz-dance and rare groove nights in the 1980s, it wasn't uncommon to hear Nancy Ames "Caracara" surging from the speakers. An infectious Latin Jazz/Easy Listening floor-filler first released on the American singer's 1966 album Latin Pulse, it has long been something of a favourite amongst both DJs and dancers. Here, it gets the reissue treatment on 7" from the cool cats at Dynamite Cuts, backed with 1967 gem "Pow, Pow, Pow", a killer, bi-lingual cover of Sergio Mendes' favourite "Mas Que Nada". This, too, is simply superb.

  2. A Festa (Aroop Roy edit) (4:02)
Review: There's something special with these hush-hush reworks and re-edits as they breathe new life into dusty old Brazilian disco and boogie cuts. A-side 'Hustle Do Brazil' is a rambunctious, party-starting treat that turns a handful of loops from a piano-heavy South American disco record into a bouncy, disco-house slammer. He subtly switches tack on side B, delivering an edit of the deeper, smoother and jazzier 'A Festa', wisely prioritising his source material's spacey jazz-funk synths, heady party atmos, good grooves and even greater electric piano stabs. Samba-disco magic!

Review: Far Out Recordings have singled-handedly made 70s fusionists Azymuth one of the most acclaimed bands of the modern era, with high profile headlines sets at cult festivals around Europe and an endless stream of quick to sell out records. Now they shine more light on the virtuosos instrumentalists with this 7" featuring two more home-recorded demo tracks. Jazz, funk, psched out sounds and rich Moog bass make these some for heir more mind expanding cuts. The a-side is actually a take on an iconic pop song from the 60s by Jovem Guarda, and the reverse is a weird space oddity for hardcore cosmic adventurers.

Review: The always excellently go slow and tropical sounds of Big Crown now look to Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band for covers of two classics. Up first is Grace Jones' nightclub classic "My Jamaican Guy" while on the flip is Erykah Badu's tribute to the legendary J Dilla, "The Healer". Both retain the essence of the original but come with loose hand claps, shimmering steel drums that bring coastal breezes, sand and sun into the equation and leave you laying horizontal. These are fine interpretations of top notch source material.

There's yet more '70s goodness with this new little scorcher: the A-side is 1973's "Tessassategn Eko" by Bahta Gebre Hiwot, a pensive Ethiopian pop hit for all sorts of music fans to enjoy, but "Ayalqem Tedqem" by Alemayehu Eshete on the B-side is where it's at... just listen to that bass and you'll instantly recognize this wonderful little cover.

Review: This officially licensed 12" sees prolific British disco producer Ben Gomori take a scalpel to two cuts from veteran African musician Amadou Balake's 2015 album, In Conclusion. On side A you'll find a fantastic, eight-minute extension of the breezy shuffler "Bar Konon Mousso (Musicien C'est Pas Quelqu'un)", where snaking saxophone solos and sun-kissed, juju style guitars rise above a hot-stepping, bass-heavy groove. Turn to the flipside for a thrillingly epic take on "Massa Kamba", a deeper and slightly more musically intricate cut blessed with a blissful; Pat Metheny style jazz guitar breakdown, memorable chorus vocals and evocative horn lines.

Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Review: Puerto Rican music legend Ray Barretto has a seriously impressive biography, including spells with the Tito Puente Orchestra and the acclaimed Fania All Stars. This tasty seven-inch single serves up one of Barretto's best boogaloo-era cuts, 1968 single and Acid album track "Mercy, Mercy Baby". It remains a fine song, wrapping a jaunty salsa rhythm in various boogaloo aural hallmarks, including impassioned vocals, funk-influenced horns and an incessant piano riff. Interestingly, this edition doesn't feature the original single B-side, but rather a previously unissued instrumental version. Shorn of the vocals and pop production, it feels breezier and heavier, with additional trumpet solos that will wind their way into your subconscious.

  1. Missoula-Nairobi (part 1) (3:21)
  2. Missoula-Nairobi (part 2) (2:43)
Review: More fabulous, funk-fuelled brilliance from the Beat Bronco Organ Trio, who earlier in the year delivered a fine debut album on Swiss imprint Rocafort Records (the must-check Road Trip). This two-part missive is not featured on that set, and instead sees them deliver a decidedly tropical fusion of loose-limbed, Tony Allen-style polyrhythmic drums, bubbly organ riffs, warming bass and reverb-laden guitar riffs that reminded us a little of both heady psyche-rock and Ghanaian Highlife. 'Missoula-Nairobi (Part 1)' is arguably the more potent and focused of the pair, with just a little more dancefloor grunt, though the flipside 'Part 2' version, with its extended solos and more freestyle feel, is every bit as alluring.

  2. Moerarie Morei Atjara (instrumental) (3:33)
Review: While it may look and sound decidedly vintage, this collaboration between veteran Surinamese musician A Bechan and Music With Soul founder Alex Figueira is in fact brand spanking new. In its' A-side "Version" mix form, "Moerarie Morei Atjara" brilliantly joins the dots between Surinamese "Hindostan" music (a style developed by the country's Indian community over decades) and the sweaty tropical rhythms of Cumbia. It's terrific stuff all told, with Bechan's ear-catching Hindu language vocals riding killer South American rhythms, jaunty bass and equally jumpy accordion motifs. Those accordions come to the fore on the flipside instrumental take, which also includes some seriously spacey Juno-60 synthesizer lines. Recommended.

Review: The Bees were a product of the late 80s South African music scene. They were an unknown band even in their homeland but its hard to see why given their happy kwaito sound. Now, 30 years later, international diggers are bringing the outfit the acclaim they deserve after the band was rather forgotten because they never had a big crossover hit in their early years. Here two of their best tracks are served up by Dutch label La Casa Tropical. They're lit up with pixelated synths and retro-future vibes that European party people love to get down to. "Mamezala" is the more considered of the two, while "Never Give Up" is a strident and rousing proto-house anthem with plenty of boogie in the bass.

Review: Given that Pedro Vian's Modern Obscure Music is renowned for its' off-kilter, unusual and often inspired releases, we shouldn't be surprised that this EP's take on West African music is far from traditional. It comes courtesy of Bep Kororoti (best known for his work as Kresy) and Akin, who adds vocals and saxophone parts. Check first the rubbery Afrobeat/heep house/metallic electrofunk fusion of brilliant opener "Epomuyen", before moving on to "Eruododo", a more bass-heavy affair which pushes Akin's Fela-style vocal and sax parts higher in the mix. Over on side B, "Ijotiya" is a more low-slung fusion of dub disco and Afrobeat, while "Love Is The Only Way" cloaks the pair's West African vocals and horn sounds in woozy deep house electronics.

Review: Dou Van Jou is one of, thankfully, an endless list of rare and mysterious records that needs to be heard. The Guadeloupean-Parisian artist and cultural activist behind it, Jimmy Blanche, combines heritage and futurism across its six tracks of jazz piano, afro drums and disco chords, too of which are the most spiritual singles off the full length itself. It's quite the weird and wonderful melange of sounds and some of the cuts even reached cult status at the time of release in 1987. World music maestro and Rush Hour founder Antal has been known to drop some of these before now, which proves they work as well at home as they do on a modern dancefloor.

Review: Funk Night Records continues to offer up new slabs of fabulously fuzzy funk from The Blassics, a nine-piece outfit from Finland that has been operative for the best part of a decade. Remarkably, this is the band's fifth single this year. On the A-side you'll find the "Slofat Version" of their tribute to the polyrhythmic percussion, raw bass and dancing horns of Afro-funk, which is aptly named 'Afro Cookie'. It's a chunky musical biscuit that looks set to energise dancefloors with its sugary delights every time it's dropped. Despite its title, flipside 'Psych Afro Funk' is not that psychedelic; it is, though a rather fine and pleasingly laidback ramble through the more relaxed end of the Afro-funk spectrum.

  2. Mizik Bel (Africaine 808 remix) (8:17)
Review: A while back, Africaine 808's DJ Nomad contacted Favorite Recordings' chief Pascal Rioux about a killer track he'd been given some years back - an obscure, previously CD-R only fusion of modern Gwo-ka and Zouk by Esnard Boisdur entitled "Mizik Bel". Rioux was excited by what he heard and agreed that the track should come out on vinyl, accompanied by a fresh rework by Nomad and Dirk Leyers as Africaine 808. Boisdur's original version (side A) is rhythmically dense but also cheery and life affirming, with celebratory chorus vocals and 80s zouk style synth lines subtly rising above a busy, all-action groove. Arguably even better is the sub-heavy Africaine 808 mix, which brilliantly re-imagines the track as a tasty chunk of tropical house/disco-zouk fusion.

Afrikan Basement: Sangre
Cat: SOIL 6600. Rel: 03 Apr 17
  1. Sangre (10:05)
Review: Tribal, physical, psychedelic: Joe Claussell's Bolla project is one of his finest creative accomplishments for many fans, and his album Afrikan Basement: Makussa is the gift that keeps on giving. Having previously leaked limited 12"s, Joe's label Sacred Rhythm does it again with another super-limited, one-sided press. Hooky, insistent and far-out for the full 10 minutes, this is shaman material right here. Do not sleep.

Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.
