Auntie Flo - "Die Bailando" (feat Eric Alejendro)
Esa - "Sabela De Cuba" (Afro Synth mix)
Review: Early in 2014, Highlife regulars Auntie Flo and Esa traveled to Cuba to play at the country's biggest music festival. While there, they hooked up with a string of local vocalists and musicians to lay down the first installment of Highlife's World Series. Predictably, it's something of a triumph, with both artists gleefully joining the dots between Afro-influenced drum machine rhythms, traditional Cuban instrumentation and the kind of skewed synths that are such a feature of their work. Auntie Flo's effort is a 13-minute epic featuring the rambling vocals of Eric Eleindro and some snaking trumpet action. It's Esa who steals the show, though, with a dreamy, Balearic-minded cut that sounds like a contemporary update of Hugh Masekela's mid 1980s work.

Bantu Clan vs Sarabi - "Africa Ni Leo" (extended mix) (7:46)
Bantu Clan vs Sarabi - "Africa Ni Leo" (Behr remix) (5:59)
Review: After pit stops in Cuba and Kenya, Auntie Flo and Esa's Highlife World Series lands in Uganda for its closing edition. Recorded over various stints at the East Africa music conference DoaDoa in Jinja in the past year, these four tracks find our intrepid pair of travelling fusionists working with musicians from Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa. First up is "DoaDoa14" by Christopher and Swahili Alley, named in honour of its genesis at that year's conference and a fine journey through spiritual African house music. Next up Esa shows off his prowess at extended dancefloor burners with a superb twisting remix of Santuri's "Min Kula" whilst the B side features Bantu Clan Vs Sarabi's "Africa Ni Leo" in both extended and remixed by Behr form. A fine end to a consistently enlightening series.

Candido - "On My Way" (3:08)
Edwin Starr - "Easin' In" (3:12)
Review: The label says it all... Neither of these tracks have ever been released outside the original albums they came on. Until now. The legendary Candido steps up for the A-side with an uptempo, percussion-heavy groove from his 1971 album Beautiful; with big brassy fills and a stripped back, sample-addict's dream breakdown, this still punches as hard now as it did over 40 years ago. Flip for a funk trip from the equally revered Edwin Starr. Taken from his Hell Up In Harlem soundtrack, it's quintessential Blaxploitation funk with slippery bass, sleazy guitars and Edwin's velvet vocals that can go from purring to roaring in 0.03 seconds. Limited to one per customer, jump on this as soon as you can.

Elizabeth Cardoso - "Eu Bebo Sim" (3:37)
Elza Soares - "Deixa A Nega Gingar" (2:19)
Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

Carrie On (5:17)
Oba Chule (remix) (3:59)
Review: Two delightfully contrasting sides from respected editing/mastering troupe Ebony Cuts. "Carrie On" is all about the sweet cascading vibraphone riff that spirals further and further into the dancefloor over a mildly chugging beat, broken only by even sweeter pianos. "Oba Chule" is a much headier affair; loaded with African percussion, densely over-layered with exciting rhythmic switches and folk chants, it's all tied together with a persistent kick drum. Meltdown.

African Shakedown #2
Cat: ASD 2. Rel: 20 Feb 14
Eddie C - "O Ye"
Noema - "The Shake"
Bayaya (Axel Boman re-rub)
Disco Maschine (Soft Rocks edit)
Review: The Africa Shakedown label coined one of last year's surprise hits with it's debut release, and the label's second release is likely to prove just as popular. Noema features once more and the Salon Zur Wilden Renate resident has collared contributions from Eddie C, Axel Boman and the Soft Rocks crew. Eddie C is first up with the irresistibly groovy "O Ye" which wouldn't look out of place on a Red Motorbike 45 dinker, whilst Noema conjures up the spirit of Bill Laswell on the dubby, scratchy production "The Shake". Studio Barnhus co-founder Boman is probably the biggest draw here and his rerub of the uncredited "Bayaya" should be familiar to anyone that's caught a DJ set from the fun loving Swede. Soft Rocks bring it home with the heavily delayed jammer "Disco Machine". Strong moves all round here sir.

Eddie C - "Salve A Bahia" (6:30)
Ray Mang - "CC Amor" (6:55)
Review: For the fourth volume in the consistently impressive Barefoot Beats series, the Brazilian crew behind the imprint has offered a label debut to Canadian scalpel fiend Eddie C. His "Salve a Bahia" is a softly spun, sun-kissed delight; a slightly tooled up re-edit of a lesser-known Brazilian gem, full of jangly acoustic guitars, delay-laden choral vocals, bubbly electronics and gentle tropical intent. On the flip, Ray Mang makes his second appearance for the label with "Cc Amor", a tasty revision of a punchy, horn-heavy chunk of disco sweetness. Wisely, he makes much more of the original version's all-too-short drum breaks, chopping and looping the carnival-friendly percussion to guarantee greater dancefloor thrills.

Monsieur Business (3:04)
Monsieur Business (Aroop Roy rework) (4:17)
Review: In 1976, French band Edition Speciale released their debut album, "Allee Des Tilleuls". While much of the album saw them explore progressive rock and jazz-rock territory, it did contain one suitably groovy and life-affirming trip into jazz-funk territory, surprise LP standout "Mr Business". Here that cut gets a single release for the very first time courtesy of the dusty-fingered diggers at Pepite. You'll find the little-known band's languid, Clavinet and synthesizer-heavy original version on side A, with Aroop Roy's tidy contemporary rework on the B. Aroop sticks a rocket up the track's bottom end, underpinning the original song with peak-time-ready drums while wisely emphasizing his own killer bassline and catchy vocals.

Senay - "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman" (3:39)
Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Turkey's Senay features on the flip with "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman", an incandescent lover's ballad that makes a welcome change to the more widely heard Turkish psych sound of the '70s.

Black Enchantment (4:16)
Review: Long time jazz wayfarer Nick Woodmansey emerges from the shadows once more with a limited 300-only 45. Two sides shrouded with his signature eastern haze, "Ominous Shanti" sees the horns gradually melting in the heat while the intricately laced percussion holds the groove together. "Black Enchantment" lollops with more of a new soul step as lilting horns rise over a bubblesome strolling bassline before switching into a deliciously cosmic finale. Grab it while it's hot.

African Bump (3:13)
K-Jee (2:38)
Review: For their latest release, Matasuna Records has put away their re-editing scalpel and instead decided to serve up two obscure old gems by Peru-based Argentine artist Enrique Lynch. Both tracks were recorded in the early 1970s and have become sought-after items amongst the Afro-Tropical collecting community. Having been re-mastered from the original master tapes, A-side "African Bump" - a jazzy, sun-soaked affair notable for its fantastic use of wah-wah guitar, Blaxploitation grooves and high-register horn solos - sounds better than ever before. The same could be said for Lynch's brilliant cover of The Nite-Liters' funk classic "K-Jee", which adds a little South American sunshine to the familiar grooves and celebrated horn lines.

Review: The Highlife World series project is the product of Auntie Flo and Esa William's collaborations in the studio. After the previous Cuba chapter comes the present Kenya release, and in case you didn't know, all proceeds from the sales will be returned to the respective countries to fund further music-making. All in all, you get to buy beautiful electronic music and help at the same time, a bargain! Esa reworks gorgeous African rhythms by Sarabi, along with Sam Jones, while Makadem comes through with the charming chimes of "Salaam". Lovely stuff.

Girma Beyene - "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" (4:03)
Review: vKeen Africa 45 followers should recognise Eshete's name as he's appeared on the series before. Mr Bongo call him the Ethiopian James Brown and the Abyssinian Elvis... And they're not far off. This 74 rarity shows him crooning and crying at full pelt over a solid funk groove that's powered by piano and guitar. Flip for an equally rare vocal track from fellow Ethiopian Girma. Recorded in 69, full focus is squared on the lavish organ leads while the horns provide a soft but sturdy backdrop.

Sofwans (3am mix)
Souffrance (dub mix)
Review: The Sofrito Super Singles series is on the cusp of double figures and this offering from collective main man Frankie Francis and the excellent Simbad might just be their best work so far. As ever with Sofrito, there's a sense of music education that comes with this record as the label shines the light on Gwo Ka - the folkloric rhythm of Guadeloupe - and one of its greatest voices in Esnard Boisdur. The focus here is Bosidur's 1991 track "Soufwans" (which translates as Sufferance for those not au fait with Guadeloupian) which in the hands of Francis and Simbad is flipped into a hypnotic house production replete with deep bassline and some killer synths. The accompanying dub mix will probably appeal to the deeper house selectors too as there's some killer drum programming on that one.

Review: Two outstanding Brazilian funk cuts straight out of 1971: "Esperar Pra Ver" is a laden with an immense orchestrated groove that's triggered by a lean, unforgettable bass guitar riff that matches Evinha's purring, slinky allure. "Que Bandeira" rolls with more of a poppy bossa flow with militant rim shots, swooning strings and a momentum that builds on every verse. Both tracks are taken from Cartao Postal, Evinha's third album that has been known to pass hands for as much as L500 in the past.

The Fasaans - "Tyrone"

Review: Fasaan Recordings is a Malmo based vinyl imprint focusing on the more obscure shades of soul, funk, disco and afro related music. The debut single on the label is "Tyrone", a delicious slice of library soul and deep, afro-tinged jazzual grooves with plucked strings, violins and muted brass. On the flip, the pace picks up a notch with label mates Enjebeye's more club friendly ''Ario'' tapping into a more traditional afrobeat groove with throbbing live bass and great brass sections coming across as Sweden's alternative to Quantic Soul Orchestra. Juno is one of the few shops around the world lucky enough to get this labels releases so don't sleep.

Ebo Taylor - "Heaven" (4:15)
Review: Two Ghanaian grooves from 1977 on Mr Bongo's perennial Afro 45s series. First up the legendary K Frimpong with what is largely believed to be his biggest track of the era: "Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'awu". A tight fusion of highlight guitars and much more persistent organs and percussion, it's a timeless example of Afrobeat's finest fusion. Flip for Ebo Taylor's "Heaven". Released on his debut album that's regularly spotted passing hands for $500, full focus here is on the horn sections. Bold, major chords and tightly wrapped around the woodblock rhythm; just sit back and let the instrumentation saturate you. Heavenly.

Review: Rare Brazil have brought us some brilliant bossanova compilations (with some steamy cover art!) over the last twenty odd years and can claim to be a definite authority on obscure Brazilian music: no argument there! Now they delve into much needed re-issues with Toque De Cuica which features two obscure gems, for the heads. First up the legendary Brazilian jazz drummer Airto Moreira serves up the feelgood disco vibes of "Toque De Cuica", while on the flip there's Erlon Chaves E Sua Banda Venemo with the sultry Latin soul-funk of "Cosa Nostra" coming off like a South American James Brown and band: you've got to hear this.

Review: Now firmly into double figures, the Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongos continues to be a source of much delight for the selectors out there seeking sought after gems from the 'golden era' of 1960s and 1970s Brazilian music. Fist up on this latest 7" is an alternate version of the Latin standard "Mas Que Nada" from Samba legend Elza Soares, who takes Jorge Ben's classic song into tougher and jazzier territory without losing any flavour. Complementing it, Mr Bongos present a rarity discovered from one of their trips to Brazil with the horn heavy delights of "Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente" from the unknown Elizabeth uncovered whilst digging through the now defunct Sao Paolo vinyl spot Tony's Hits.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series rarely misses a beat, with each successive seven-inch showcasing two more hard-to-find treats from the dim and distant past. The latest instalment opens with "Vou Morar No Teu Sorriso", a sought-after cut from Trio Tenura's eponymous 1971 MPB/soul fusion album. It's a genuinely summery treat, with ear-catching, reverb-heavy vocals and rising horn lines rising above a life-affirming backing track. Review: Last year, long-serving "global pop" innovators Deep Forest (now a solo project by co-founder Eric Mouquet) returned to action with a collaborative album co-penned by fellow "Worldbeat" veteran Daniele Gaudi. Here Moquet presents the first solo Deep Forest set since 2015, a breezy and sun-kissed set inspired by the music of Brazil. What you get is a dreamy and effortlessly melodious blend of indigenous rhythms, electronic instrumentation, dreamy chords, heartfelt vocals (in this case largely in Portuguese), ambient atmospherics and slow-motion synth-pop sensibilities. There are few surprises, but then you wouldn't expect them: after all, Mouquet is a master at producing this kind of accessible pop. If you're a fan of Deep Forest, you'll love it.

Review: This year BBE will be offering up plenty of funk, soul and boogie gems from the vast vaults of Nigerian label Tabanisi Records. This, though, is an altogether different beast: a new pressing of a barely known 1986 recording of the investiture ceremony of an Eze-Nri king - a ritual that has sporadically been carried out by members of the Nri Kingdom for well over a thousand years (and possibly even longer). It makes for fascinating listening and consists of little more than infectious drum rhythms, occasional chants, and occasional hypnotic melodies played on a hand-made wooden flute. The music itself is highly rhythmic - as you'd expect - and rooted in traditions that could well pre-date Christianity.
