Cumbia Sobre El Mar (El Buho mixes)
  1. Quantic presents Flowering Inferno - "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" (feat Nidia Gongora - El Buho remix) (5:11)
  2. Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

Togo Soul 70: Edits & Rarities
  1. Yta Jourias - "Adome Nyueto" (Bosq rework) (8:10)
  2. Roger Damawuzan - "Loxo Nye" (Pushin Wood remix) (5:39)
  3. Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
  4. Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Review: Kalita Records and CC:EDITIONS (a new venture by Australia's CC:DISCO) come together to release a 12" EP containing four of Nana Tuffour's greatest electronic burger highlife tracks (including the massive 'Sikyi Medley' and 'Asamando'), accompanied by interview-based liner notes.

Big support so far from Gilles Peterson, Hunee, Antal, Norman Jay, Palms Trax, Alexander Nut, Dan Shake & Bradley Zero!

Kimiomitsukete
Cat: AHS 33. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. Kimiomitsukete (Ryuhei The Man edit) (4:21)
  2. Kimiomitsukete (Exclusive R&B version) (4:09)
Review: On her previous seven-inch singles, Japanese singer Nayutah has delivered material that sits somewhere between the smooth '80s soul of Sade, and the more organic, loose-limbed sound of turn-of-the '80s jazz-funk. On Ryuhei The Man's vocal edit of 'Kimiomitsukete', she explores the latter sound more than the former, with sweet, soulful choruses, stirring synth-strings and fluid jazz piano solos rising above a warming, pleasingly live-sounding groove. Turn to the flip for the 'Exclusive R&B Version', a rework that places the same gorgeous instrumentation and vocals around amore head-nodding, turn-of-the-90s R&B beat.

Makom Ma Bobe
Cat: KALITA 12014. Rel: 13 Mar 20
  1. Makom Ma Bobe (4:28)
  2. Makom Ma Bobe (Mendel edit) (5:46)
Review: Kalita are excited to announce as their second release of 2020, the first ever official re-release of Cameroonian singer Jeannette N'Diaye's 1981 disco masterpiece 'Makom Ma Bobe', backed by an extended edit courtesy of Mendel! Originally appearing as one of three tracks on 'Mut'a Mbamba', her 1981 single released on Cameroonian producer Jojo Ngalle's record label Disques Jojo, 'Makom Ma Bobe' has recently exploded as one of the most sought-after Afro-disco records out there, with prices becoming ever exceedingly eye-watering and copies ever harder to find. Now Kalita come to the rescue, offering a loud and remastered 12" single for all. If that wasn't enough, the single is also backed by an extended edit of 'Makom Ma Bobe', courtesy of Netherlands-based DJ and producer Mendel! It's fast, it's euphoric and it's lasers are to die for. What more could you want?

Deixa A Tristeza
  1. Neno Exporta Som - "Deixa A Tristeza" (3:29)
  2. Agnaldo Rayol - "Sumauma" (3:38)
Review: After delivering some killer reissues over the last few years, Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series has reached "buy on sight" status. It goes without saying that the label's latest double-header of hard-to-find Brazilian gems is white hot. A-side Neno Exporta Som's impossible-to-find 1971 gem "Deixa A Tristeza", a wild and life-affirming fusion of samba and funk full of fuzzy sax solos, glassy-eyed vocals and heavyweight grooves. Over on the flip you'll find another killer cut from '71: "Sumauma" by MPB star Agnaldo Rayol. Blessed with a great groove and incredible arrangement, it sounds like a Brazilian take on the sort of over-the-top songs used to open James Bond movies in the 1970s (albeit with a bit of samba sunshine thrown in).

Latin Fever Vol 1
  1. Luchito Rodriguez - "Hey Guajira Baby" (3:10)
  2. Luchito Rodriguez - "Vacilon" (2:17)
  3. Nestor Alvarez - "Lupita" (3:07)
  4. Nestor Alvarez - "Bang The Bongo" (2:52)
Review: The Original Gravity label's latest must-check missive is unusual, featuring as it does four tracks squeezed on to one limited edition seven-inch single. As the title suggests, it's Latin-themed, with two artists (overseen by Welwyn Garden City-based producer Neil Henderson) delivering two sweaty South American funk workouts apiece. Luchito Rodriguez handles side A, delivering the Tito Puente style mambo brilliance of "Hey Guajira Baby" and the insatiable, fienishly fuzzy Latin funk/boogaloo business that is "Vacilon". Over on the flip, Nestor Alvarez first offers up a beefed-up, bass-heavy taken on a familiar mambo favourite ("Lupita"), before sprinting towards heavy Latin funk territory on the insatiable "Bang The Bongo".

Review: Ahhh, bien sur! Julien Achard and Nicholas Skliris return to Heavenly Sweetness to provide our shelves with the second chapter of the Digital Zandoli series, a wonderful dynasty of contemporary dance music from every corner of the world. Much like the first edition, which flew off our floors in absolutely no time, you'll be lucky to find this music anywhere else but righ here - these two work hard to dig out the very best of what the rest of the globe has to offer. More to the point, you'll find it even harder to find dance music as lush and tropical as this gear, a bubby assortment of dance tracks ranging from house to soul and dancehall. Bliss.

Review: From their Jeri Jeri roots, Hard Wax maverick Ernestus's Senegalese drum ensemble work elevated to Ndagga Rhythm Force in early 2015. Sprinkling our collections with beautiful cosmic dub tech ever since, the troupe bring the 12"s together for a full album adventure. From the instantly distinctive percussive layers and thin glimmers of highlife guitars on "Lamb Ji" to the intense rolling drums and yearning vocals of "Jigeen", climaxing with the hi-hat-snapping "Yermande", the detail, soul and richness of this project is near matchless.

Review: This is a perfectly obscure record of lush Brazilian jazz that can be either a perfect entry point into this sound or yet another fine piece for the collection of veterans. It is the first ever record of Jaime Alem and Nair De Candia, both of whom sing on it, and has a super cool jazzy feel, with high class and luxurious stings, Latin percussive patterns and a steamy warm atmosphere. Reminiscent of all your favourites but also with a style that is uniquely theirs, this is a cult classic packed with gems like 'A Bica De Chororo' and 'Olhos Para Sao Paulo'.

Review: Brazilian songwriter Milton Nascimento has a remarkable catalogue behind him, beginning in the late 60s and running continuously since. Originally released alongside the recently repressed Maria Maria, here the 2002 album Ultimo Trem (Last Train) stands on its own as a startlingly beautiful body of work steeped in Brazilian folk. There are tracks that drift through scenes with expressive ease, such as the spellbinding acoustic suite "A Viagem". The haunting grace of "A Lua Girou" will stay with you long after the last note plays, and so runs an album packed throughout with such moments.

Review: Amongst highlife enthusiasts, Nkem Njoku & Ozzobia Sound's sole album is regarded as something of a classic, not least because of its party-friendly take on "Igbo highlife", a sub-genre of the Ghanaian style that utilises traditional Ogene 6/8 bell rhythms. The album's six tracks are infectious and wholeheartedly positive, with the assembled band - which included John Kante on guitar, a full horn section of boogie-era highlife keyboard maestro Jake Sollo - delivering instrumental backing tracks that ripple with colourful motifs, killer grooves and more than a hint of gospel righteousness. The title is certainly fitting, because it's a very special album indeed.
