Set Fire To Me (Vick Re Imagined Time Traveler version)
There It Is (feat D Millz/Kai Alce vocal remix)
Set Fire To Me (Vick beats N Life vinyl mix)
Review: Back in 2020, Vick Lavender unveiled his 'Time Traveller Mix' of 'Set Fire To Me', a superb cover of Willie Colon's Latin classic of the same name. It never appeared on wax at the time - it was, sadly for vinyl enthusiasts, digital-only - so this 12" is sure to be in demand. Naturally, it kicks off with that fine re-imagining - a brilliant blend of layered Latin percussion, intergalactic electronics, sunset-ready chords, jammed-out Rhodes motifs and rolling deep house grooves. This time round, he's also added a more stripped-back, drum-heavy version (the 'Beats N Life Vinyl Mix'), while the EP also boasts another previously digital-only treat: Kai Alce's deep house-meets-broken beat tweak of D Millz collaboration 'There It Is'. In a word: essential!

Lovely Day (Studio Rio version)
Lovely Day (Studio Rio instrumental version)
Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

Review: One of several new Krafty Kuts edits to fly through the floodgates of late, this 7" amounts to the whopping 28th edition of the esteemed Friday's Funky series. This time hearing the editors handle and reappropriate a swathe of obscure Latin music samples, of lord knows what origin, 'Colombia' amounts to a slick two-toner backed by brass riffs and samples rap interjections. B-side 'Brujeria' is of a similar quality and verve.

Review: New to Soundway Records comes this second edition of Ghana Special, a comprehensive compilation of '80s Ghanaian-diasporic highlife and its embrace of synthesiser and new wave elements. 20 years on from the first compilation in the series, which was released in 2009 and focused on modern and contemporary forms of highlife, this second volume focuses more on tracing the development of the sound as it took on increasingly synthetic forms. The scheme of things goes something like this: drum machines and synthesisers appeared alongside lilting guitar lines and punchy horns, and Ghanaian musicians began incorporating US disco and boogie, r&b, European new wave, and Caribbean zouk and soca into their music. A kind of socioeconomic history lesson conjoins this musicology: the eighties saw unrestricted migration policies in Western nations in the postcolonial era, which enabled new crossover industries to flourish. Thus the music you hear on this compilation was born, and thrived, and continues to thrive.

Review: Ravi Shankar is often cited as one of the most famous and influential sitar players in the world and none of his albums do quite as much justice to that claim than Shankar Family & Friends, first released in 1974. Unlike many of his former albums, this LP places a front-and-centre focus on Shankar's family members, with whom he collaborates throughout the album. Though, that's not to say it doesn't also come with commercial draws - indeed, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Tom Scott also make cameo appearances. For all its humble harkenings-back to familial source, Shankar does not hesitate to fuse his own ancestral Indian classical music with the Western pop and jazz elements of his friends. The likes of 'I Am Missing You' and 'Jaya Jagadish Hare' are nonetheless utter dreamscapes, and thanks to this reissue via the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab series, this version comes as the highest-quality version of the record yet.

Review: Thr33-Thirty Seven Records is the vinyl-only issue of Aussie label Groovescooter, delivering rare, nigh mythical unicorns of the Latin funk-jazz variety, largely on 12". Now welcoming back polyrhythmic electronic music trio Oyobi to the roster with a fresh 7" with two tracks detailed, we're bowled over by this slice of true newness from the lifers. First up is a jubilant buzzer shared with Colombia's finest, pico sound system legend Kaiman Jimenez; 'The Bottle / El Trago' pairs crisp hatwork with two-stepping syncopations and mettalic additions. On the B-side comes an alternate version with Karen Lee Andrews reinterpreting the vox in English, which to us lime-juicers reveals a pensive take on alcoholism. No reason to not get up and dance, though!

Review: Scruinversal is back for another vinyl outing and this one takes the form of a reissue of some of the label head's favourite tunes. An unknown artist is behind the sunny shuffle and big horns of 'This Kind Of Latin Rhythm' while Thierry Tomas's 'Samba' is a shuffling house cut laden with glorious piano work. Funkyjaws then offers up his take on tango, Scruscru layers up the rhythms and percussion on 'Juicy Brass' and Frank Virgilio's 'Portrait Of You' shuts down with a deeper late-night feel. These are some superbly effective Latina house jams to drop on the hottest of days and balmiest of nights.

Del Callejon
Review: Orchestra Mambo International pays vibrant tribute to the golden era of mambo with their latest singles, 'Mambo Te Llama' and 'Del Callejon.' Drawing inspiration from the legendary Tito Puente, the band infuses uptempo Latin dance rhythms and punchy brass arrangements reminiscent of the mambo craze that swept the world in the mid-20th century. 'Mambo Te Llama' captures the essence of the genre with its infectious Afro-Cuban rhythms and lively instrumentation. The track features stellar piano, trombone, and conga solos, keeping the flame of mambo alive with its energetic delivery. On 'Del Callejon,' Orchestra Mambo International showcases a slower mambo groove, accompanied by soulful vibes and captivating solos on timbales, trombone, and trumpet. The incorporation of vibes, popularized by Tito Puente and Cal Tjader in the 1950s, adds a classic touch to the composition, paying homage to the mambo vibes style while infusing it with their unique flair. Both tracks, exemplify Orchestra Mambo International's dedication to preserving and revitalising the spirit of mambo music with their fiery performances and authentic homage to the genre's roots.

Formed in 1973 by bassist Berthwel Maphumulo, Mac Mathunjwa on organ, Innocent Mathunjwa on drums, Joe Zikhali on guitar, Thema Maboneng was released in 1975, before being almost immediately forgotten. However, a recent rediscovery by diggers and curators Kon & Amir, for their lauded Off The Track Volume Two: Queens compilation, sparked a renewed interest; the South African four-piece shared equal responsibility in writing and arranging these six instrumentals, which are tight and full, and come replete with Hammonds, well-surrounded guitar, and cross-sticking snare hits.

It opens with 'Papa Bel' which is a steamy cut with florid melodic leads and tribal percussion. 'Tanda' then brings wailing vocals and more organic and jumbled grooves that ooze summer heat. The Afro rhythms continue through 'Rewild' which has a lively broken beat that rides stiff drums and last of all is the most intense of the lot - 'Guado Loop' is heavily layered with drums and perc, vocals, congas and background chants that will get any dance floor in a sweat.

This new, highly limited box set hears seven revered, rarely-heard gems of Latin jazz, deep soul, raucous boogaloo, and heavy salsa by the legend, most of which were largely salvaged from his very own self-run Ghetto Records vaults. Drug Story was inspired by true events, and hears Bataan croon graciously over themes of destitution, lost family members and friends, and addiction. One of three definitive reissues of Bataan's greatest works, licensed from Bataan himself, with his oversight and input into a 15 page oversized book by Pablo Yglesia,s that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could.

Sound Exhibitions finally team up with the Croatian crackajack for 'Jungle Bird Tree', which was originally released as an exclusive track on an obscure digital Summer 2023 compilation (seriously, it deserves better, and don't SE know), and here lend it a neat little Wicked Break rework from Louie. Now reissued by Jazz Room, 'Cala Baca Menino' and its counterparts 'Ogum' are two stonking Afrobrasilidades, flaunting the effortless vocals of Russo Passapusso and Jucara Marcal, not to mention the quick double-bass and piano caresses of Marco Paiva and Hercules Gomes respectively, plus Sergio Machado on drums and Gabi Guedes on percussion. Under the direction of Letieres, the group produced many records such as this: jazzy arrangements over Afro-Bahian rhythms, with everything recorded live at Estudio Traquitana, Sao Paulo.

This album marked a pivotal moment in Okubo's life and Japanese society, blending pastoral nostalgia with urban allure. Immersed in Tokyo's acid folk scene, Okubo and his band craft a unique sound across nine tracks, from the Neil Young-esque 'Ameagari' to the whimsical 'Semai Boku No Heyade.' Despite subsequent success with bands like Neko and Kaze, Heavy Way remains shrouded in mystery, its soft allure drawing a dedicated online following. It has in part previously featured in Time Capsule's Nippon Acid Folk collection and is a prized relic of Japan's musical past that now gets a full reissue.

Review: Pan-African supergroup Ibibio Sound Machine return with Pull The Rope, a tonal shift compared to their earlier full-lengths like Electricity; this one veers more on the side of acid house, highlife and disco, compared to the more histrionic electronics of the eponymous sound machine of that album, as well as Uyai and Doko Mien, heard thus far. As heard on the lead single 'Got To Be Who U Are', we are importuned with the command to be ourselves, as everybody else is already taken; such an injunction is met with a driving, time-of-your-life, weighty acid house production, which comes to neat effect when paired with Eno Williams' passionate soul vocals.

What set them apart was their versatility and unconventional instrumentation, utilizing a bass clarinet instead of saxophones and Osi drums from Africa instead of bongos. The album's fusion of psychedelic vibes with Latin rhythms captivated listeners and left an indelible mark on Miami's Latin music scene in the late 70s. Sampled by DJs worldwide, including the renowned DJ Shadow, Ray & His Court's music continues to resonate with audiences today. This newly remastered vinyl reissue, pressed on audiophile virgin vinyl, offers a pristine listening experience for aficionados of Latin, funk, and rare groove music. With its infectious grooves and innovative arrangements, Ray & His Court's album remains an important addition to any discerning collector's library.

Review: Dave Lee has tackled the legendary Brazilian disco cut 'Que Tal America' by Two Man Sound, originally released back '78.. Dave subtly adds new breakdowns, live percussion and even some additional vocals to give his version extra pizzazz, whilst making the most of the insistent flowing groove that made this a sure fire floor filler. On the flip things get more more echo heavy, whilst the sharp jazzy musicianship shines through. There was never an instrumental version on the original 12". Add an acapella and bonus beats then you have an essential disco package for every Disco DJ's record box.

Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Perez is said to have played a trailblazing role in the proliferation of Salsa music throughout the US from the 1950s to the 1970s, proving the fact that trends often don't just happen but are often rather likely to catch on due to the influence of notable individuals. These tracks boast danceable rhythms, vibrant brass, and the unmistakable influence of Afro-Cuban genres like son, guaguanco, and son montuno. The compilation carefully highlights key elements such as the coro, montuno, moNa, and cierre, providing a rich historical perspective on the roots of salsa.

Led by Mahamadou Souleymane but now framed as a quartet, their Tuareg desert blues sound has a sharper bite than similarly popular acts like Tinariwen which responds very well to a bigger production. Long time fans fear not, the spark of Souleymayne's songwriting and playing is intact, but there's a vibrancy to tracks like 'Imouhar' and 'Funeral For Justice' as they play with dynamics and tension which bring an exciting new dimension to desert blues.

While their earlier work hinted at potential commercial success akin to Los Hermanos, the band chose a path less traveled, embracing subversive melodies and instrumentation. Their latest offering is a perfect example to this artistic evolution. seamlessly blends intimate arrangements with a full-band approach, resulting in a captivating sonic experience.
