Review: Tatsuya Nakamura's Locus has never before been reissued despite the fact that it has long been regarded as something of a classic. It originally landed in 1984 and is a masterclass in the J-jazz world thanks to Nakamura's next level skills on the drums. The record takes in a myriad of styles from percussive samba to futuristic ambient for late night meditation. Next Nakamura on this record are Kazumasa Akiyama on guitar, bass player Hideto Kanai and top trumpet man Shinobu Fujimoto, all of whom are exceptional musicians which really shines thorough in the music.

The album itself has long been hard to find, even within Japan, and is considered by collectors to be one of those 'Holy grail' sets whose musical quality makes it worth tracking down. Across the four tracks, drummer and percussionist Nakumura is joined by a stellar cast of musicians to explore distinctively different takes on jazz-fusion, from heavy Latin influenced drum jams, to experimental ambient and colourful cuts that sit at different points in between.

Review: Nat Birchall is a prolific artist and someone who has proven he can do all forms of jazz from spiritual to contemporary to dub styled. This newest album from him finds him join with an expanded Unity Ensemble to cook up six original compositions featuring the likes of cult UK tenor saxophonist Alan Skidmore and guest percussionist Mark Wastell. They all came together initially at a John Coltrane tribute concert at London's Cafe Oto last year and soon found they had a common creative group so decided to get in the studio together. That early synergy shines through here on a lush five track record that is expansive and uplifting and rich in celestial melody.

Review: The Hip Walk is often said by both fans and critics to be one of Nathan Davis's finest albums. It finds him with his quintet and featuring Carmell Jones on top form back in 1995. At the time, Afro-American Davis was living in Europe and working with the likes of Art Blakey. Jones was an old school mate who plays trumpet on this record and is know for doing the same on Horace Silver's classic 1965 Song for My Father. Nathan's role was to hold down the rhythm section and he did so in style here across some top ballads and virtuoso solo exhibitions from his bandmates.

While rooted in jazz - both classical and contemporary - the ever-changing collective's output also heavily draws on what he calls "traditional musics" from around the World (and the instruments used to make it), psychedelia and more than a dash of far-sighted spiritualism. Review: Japanese jazz trio Nautilus (named of course after Bob James' 1974 fusion classic) are also high-quality rare groove merchants and super sweet and smooth fusion sounds. They have been prolific again this year with somewhere around six new releases and now this welcome Revival album. It comes on both CD (this being a Japanese special edition) and vinyl and is a fine showcase of their sounds which manages to be both timeless and classic as well as contemporary in execution. Many of their recent singles feature here alongside some other treats.

Review: During their first European tour in May 2023, Tokyo-based Jazz trio Nautilus received a raucous response from concert visitors. In response, Japanese label Oonops Drops decided to press their last gig of the tour at the legendary King Georg in Cologne, Germany on limited mixed media. This one's for all the concert-goers, who'll now get to soak up the very same vibes heard back in May. This cross-section of songs spans the old to the new, though all originate from a fresh multitrack recording session; going so far as to recapture the mood of the event with canned clapping and whistles, the vibe of "being there" is emulated to a T, with 'Stone Ground Seven' and 'Expansions' coming as exemplary bottlings of Nautilus' joie de vivre.

Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Japanese funk and soul group from Tokyo who have an unashamed love of James Brown and his hard-hitting funky style. They do big dance numbers as well as more laid-back and mellow moments, but this new 7" is very much in the former camp. "The Jet Leg" (feat Ryo Nakata (Osaka Monaurail)) is all big horns, hard and crisp drums and incendiary vocals from the lead singer. It's a real stormy tune and on the flip side, "Wolf" doesn't let up. It's another rousing tune lead by huge horns, all manner of bristling percussive sounds and a driving rhythm section.

Review: Trombonist Ira Nepps - a member of Hawaiian AIR classic Lemur who also recorded with the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Leon Russell and BB King - released only one album and that was this one in 1979. Trombone Feeling is a seamless and soulful fusion of jazz and mellow styles with Brazilian sunshine flavours that brings to mind the work of the great Roy Ayers. It features such gems as the lush title track with its sublime female choses and the more low key and soothing sounds of 'Trickey Mickey' as well as plenty more. It has become a cult and hard-to-find album having only been pressed up 500 times back in the day, and it was popularised on the radio on the US mainland.

Review: The Brazilian composer, pianist and producer, Mario Castro Neves, and his group Samba S. A.'s self-titled album from 1967 oozes with class. It possesses that archetypal 60s bossa nova, jazz, samba sound; up there with Sergio Mendes at his finest, Tambo Trio or Milton Banana - a breezy ride that touches on easy listening at times, but still held together with a cool swagger. Biba and Thais Do Amaral's vocals are on point, with a relaxed delivery that compliments the tracks with the sublime beauty a la vocal groups such as Quarteto Em Cy. Also appearing on the record is bassist extraordinaire Novelli, who worked with Milton Nascimento, Nelson Angelo E Joyce, Airto and many of the greats of Brazilian music of the time.
