Get It (2:55)
Infinity Pool (3:09)
Review: These two tracks from Mike Bandoni and Chip Wickham have been a long time coming. The two stablemates from the 'Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band' have been discussing a collaboration for years and now; and it's finally in the bag! Mike brings his trademark killer funky drums (recorded by the legendary Malcolm Catto), percussion, Rhodes, bass and vintage guitar vibes to the party, whilst Chip delivers some sublime and highly complimentary work on sax and flute. 'Infinity Pool' sounds like a long-lost Bobbi Humphrey-meets-Bob James composition, with the flute taking centre stage - underpinned by what can only be described as mammoth funk grooves on every other instrument - while 'Get It!' is a cool number, channelling a phenomenally infectious groove and hook, both of which remain in the brain for days.

Rickey Calloway & His Tennessee Band - "Do It On The One (Stay In The Pocket)" (3:10)
The Tennessee Band - "Ain't It A Crime" (instrumental) (3:06)
Review: Funk Night cop a couple of fine funk gems here from Rickey Calloway. He is an r&b singer, as well as a rhythm guitar musician and songwriter from Jacksonville, Florida. His Tennessee Band helps him serve up funk that comes direct from the 70s, James Brown style. Both of the singles here are [rimed to fire up the floor, with 'Do It On The One (Stay In The Pocket)' the more direct of the two and the flip side 'Ain't It A Crime' (instrumental) going deeper.

Elizabeth Cardoso - "Eu Bebo Sim" (3:37)
Elza Soares - "Deixa A Nega Gingar" (2:19)
Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

I'm Here

I'm Here (4:03)
The Moment (4:35)
Review: 'I'm Here' is the glorious second single from Cornell CC Carter's album, Next Life. It is a superbly seductive and go-slow stepper with neat bass riffs spaciously drawn out beneath acoustic guitar motifs and lumpy drums. The vocal is butter sweet and as the track rolls on the chords grow ever more lush. After that memorising a-side comes a modern take on Curtis Mayfield style soul complete with the steamy spoken vocals, screen string sweeps and pillowy chords. Finishing it off in style is a bassline to die for.

Best Of Various
Marcello Cassanelli - "Fantasia" (5:02)
Zarenzeit - "Deep Work" (6:41)
Stefano De Santis - "Song For George D" (4:19)
Future Jazz Ensemble - "Freeway" (4:31)
Caruso - "Vestimenta" (6:06)
Review: Ten Lovers always manage to find a perfect sweet spot between jazz and house on the music it serves up. This new various artists' effort proves the point well: Marcello Cassanelli lunches the trip with groovy and nodding bass synths and airy vocal cries on 'Fantasia.' Zarenzeit then sinks into a bubbly groove with killer drums and sun-worshiping synths before Stefano De Santis drops some excellent broken beast on his squelchy synth workout 'Song For George D.' Future Jazz Ensemble takeoff into the cosmos and Caruso gets romantic on 'Vestimenta'.

Stay Alert (22:22)
Review: People of Earth shakes things up for #016 with a limited 12" from Charolastra entitled Karuna. Only 200 copies pressed of this continuous play, crossover jazz release. Brought to the realization with some of ATLANTA's most talented instrumentalists. It is an amalgamation of genres but the underlying emotions are immediately recognizable. Grief, loss, regret and the transcendental power of the spirit to overcome these hardships. Blending elements of jazz, IDM, broken beat, drone, and dub, while it may be difficult to put your finger on Karuna it doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

Tighren Up & Take It Over Boogaloo (Lessons #3) (3:49)
(Hey Girl) Try It, You'll Like It Boogaloo (Lessons #4) (3:23)
Review: Si Cheeba tops up his nascent Cheeba's Latin Bros edits venture with a new addition to the Echo Chamber label. Following up 'What You Gotta Say - Hey Hey!' released earlier this year, now appears two tutorials for you, on how exactly to handle any forthcoming electric boogaloo, before you blow a fuse... as ever continuing his mission to join the dots between funky and soulful sounds past and present, Cheeba delivers two fresh, impossible-to-source samply instrumental edits straight to the dome - the first a handclapping, big-breaksy dance pedagogy (it's urgent upstarts like you learn), and the B laying down a more seductive medley ("try it...") replete with a djembe solo.

Dig This! (vocal version) (3:56)
Dig This! (instrumental) (3:58)
Review: We hold our hands up, we don't know anything about Cheeba's Prestige Allstars and cannot find much out either. Echo Chamber Recordings though have got them on this limited 7" and the music is a steamy mix of Afro and Latin funk that comes in two different versions. 'Dig This!' (vocal version) is a raw cut with plenty of hard-edge drums and James Brown samples that liven it up next to some big sax energy. On the back side is the instrumental which is only slightly paired back and still has lots of James Brown mic work.

Don (7")
Cat: CACK 4506. Rel: 29 Jan 16
Don (2:10)
Jon (2:30)
Review: Two masters of the free / improvisational jazz form, Don Cherry and Jon Appleton, are rare to come by these days. Both artists are highly sought after and difficult to find on the second-hand market, so a reissue of their work - especially together - is the perfect kind of treat for our Thursday morning tasting sessions. This reissue of "Don" comes in 7" format, and its wonky, spaced-out horns and subtle electronics are every bit as strange and daring as they were back in 1970. "Jon", on the flipside, is just as twisted, and possibly even further out there into the ether. Bloody hell...1970! Highly recommended.

Funky Nassau (3:21)
Shaft (3:21)
Review: The Selector Series has pulled out a big one for this year's Record Store Day celebrations. Both of these tunes are imagined classics reimagined that have a fresh West Coast jazz-funk feel and arrive on 45rpm together for the first time. The A-side has a rocky feel and is a version of The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau', while over on the other side Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' gets a new psychedelic twist. This pari of covers by The Chuck Boris Trio are as brillaint as they are obscure and will cost you well over three figures if you can find an original. Both are remastered for this 7".

Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:51)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:25)
Review: Discodelic obviously rates this latest 7" of theirs because they have released it in more than one format. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Two belters and this one looks as good as it sounds, too.

Review: London artist cktrl teased this new album with a great EP earlier in October. He has been on a fine run of form ever since his 2017 mixtape, and last year dropped his 'Robyn' EP and also made an appearance with a cameo in Beyonce's 'Black Is King' film. This full length on Touching Bass finds the producer and multi-instrumentalist once more fusing contemporary-classical and electronic R&B across a magical set of tunes, one of which features a collaboration with GRAMMY Award-nominated singer-songwriter Mereba. This is a new school jazz sound that will appeal to genre newcomers and old-heads alike.

Deixa O Morro Cantar (2:33)
Mas Que Nada (2:33)
Review: Supreme musica popular Brasileira and bossa-nova vibes here on two tracks from Mr Bongo's leading Brazilian 45's lady, Claudia. "Deixa o Morro Cantar" features on Claudia's very first 7", released in 1965 by RGE Brazil. Her version of "Mas Que Nada" is said to be more of a jazzy/folk-funk take on the Ben classic. A relatively recent discovery made during the label's last trip to Brazil, Maria das Gracas Rallo was born in 1946 in Rio de Janeiro. She has become the most awarded singer outside of her home country and was most popular internationally in 1982 with the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the musical Evita. Moreover, she has recorded over twenty albums and has amassed huge record sales throughout her successful career.

Para Ti (2:42)
Review: They say you can find any information you want on the internet these days, but we can't see anything about the band Colorado. Thankfully, the label reissuing this self-titled single managed to get in touch with an original member who explained that the band is three brothers from Mexico City. They made funky jazz fusion sounds as evidenced here. Hypnotic fender Rhodes defines the open with horns guitars, synths and bass bringing subtle rock elements to the fabulous groove. Flip it over for 'Para Ti' which is playful and experimental with all three musicians really doing a fine job of serving up great and varied interplay.

D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Then comes 'Kevin's Funk' which is named in reference to Incognito trumpet player Kevin Robinson, who played as part of a Congress-associated line-up for this session.

Bembe Segue - "Mother Of The Future" (live version)
Review: Expansion's focus right now is on reissuing classic tracks alongside a newer version of it. They are all coming on tidy 10" eco vinyl in mad limited numbers and next up is Norman Connors and Bembe Segue. Connors dropped his superb 'Mother of the Future' in 1975 and it is a mad jazz dancer with layer upon layer of Afro drumming, loose percussion and expressive vocal ad-libs. Flip it over and we're taken to 2008's live version of the same tune by Bembe Segue. It's a little less intense but no less busy, with silky jazz grooves and new vocals layering in some future soul.

Dance Tonight (2:52)
Review: Claude Cooper is a rather mysterious figure despite having got plenty of people talking in the last couple of years. He has picked up some high-profile radio play and after being unmasked recently is back with a gorgeous new funk single on the Friendly Recordings label. This hand-numbered pink vinyl 7" is limited to 300 copies and opens with the mad feel-good vibe of 'Stay A While' with its happy chords and dusty, driving drum funk. It's perfect for sunny days and lazy afternoons and 'Dance Tonight' is a bit more raw and 60s tinged for later in the party.

Hypnotoad (2:34)
Review: Some 30 years since their debut album, the British jazz quartet Corduroy are still going strong with their incredible organ jazz and vocal stylings on a new 7" 'No More Me Me Me / Hypnotoad'. 'No More Me Me Me' is a zany vocal time capsule, with a tongue-in-cheek style that brings to mind Blur's 'Park Life' or literally any B-52s song. Alternatively on the B-side is something much more in Corduroy's playing ground, a sensational instrumental jazz number with an organ focus. This is another incredible 45 to add to any jazz collection.

Review: Arising phoenix-like from the flames of a film soundtrack originally thought to have been lost in a blaze, 'Psychose' and its partner in crime 'Oh! Lord' now come as the latest reissued musical tidbits from French jazz fusion masters Cortex. Though the name of the film for which they composed these two tittilating trinkets is unknown, the vibe of the picture is certainly inferable from the tracks' light restlessness and hard-to-pin-down contrast. Bright clavs, electric pianos and rough-edged drums whirl about both mixes in stereo-optimized fashion, sultrily portraying the headspace of a 70s street urchin with a chromatic relish for life.

Theon Cross - "Candace Of Meroe" (5:50)
Pokus - "Pokus One" (4:17)
Review: Soul Jazz Records' new must-have compilation "Kaleidoscope" does a great job in celebrating the vibrancy of the UK's fast-growing contemporary jazz scene. For some reason the vinyl version of the release omits the two tracks featured here, hence the label offering them up on a limited-edition 12" single that they say will never be repressed or reissued. The A-side features Sons of Kemet member (and renowned tubist/trombonist) Theon Cross's "Candace of Meroe", a bustling affair that riffs on the polyrhythmic Afrobeat sound of Tony Allen and Fela Kuti whilst taking it in a decidedly jazzier new direction. Over on the flip psychedelically inclined duo Pokus delivers "Pokus 1", a wonderfully low-slung and spaced-out affair that adds mind-altering, mutilated electric piano motifs to a deliciously weighty, low-slung groove.

Melodies Record Club will find each curated by a different guest DJ or producer with the first one selected by the always on point Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. He picks some of the tracks he used to spin at the legendary Plastic People and first up is an extended version of 1975 tune 'De I Comahlee Ah' by jazz stars Jackie McLean and Michael Carvin. Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus" (2:57)
Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John" (2:24)
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Review: The legendary Afro funk fusionists Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou Dahomey have got unlimited amounts of big tunes in their back catalogue and the fiery 'It's A Vanity' is one of them. It has fat and chunky drums with trademark horns leading the way next to the impassioned vocals. Review: Reference Library dig deep into the archives for this glorious new 7" which comes in super limited quantities. It features Italian artists Santucci and Castiglione taking one side each with their own lush jazz and library tinged instrumentals. Santucci goes first with 'Mediterraneo,' a turbulent brew of double bass and prominent horn work that whips up a real storm as the drums come crashing down like waves on rocks. It is one where artists engaged with Latin musical roots from another era and update them for the here and now. Of course, Hugh Hefner had something to say about that and so the album was reissued as Picture Of Heath in 1961, and it remains a marvellous entry in the discographies of these two jazz masters. As such, Blue Note turned back to this record for their Tone Poet series, as Baker's trumpet and Pepper's alto sax interact with Phil Urso's tenor sax, Curtis Counce's bass, Carl Perkins' piano and Lawrence Marable's drums. It's an all-time great sounding better than ever on this edition.
