Slacking Off (reissue)
Slacking Off (reissue) (7" 再出版)
Cat: BK 014RE. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. The Nassauvians - "Slacking Off" (3:05)
  2. Tommy Goodwin - "The Time Is Now" (feat Don Lepage) (4:16)
Review: "Slacking Off" came from a Nassauvians session that found the band coming back together in the studio for the first time after a little break, but totally unprepared. Despite this, they struck real aloha gold, with Hawaiian soul, gently lilting funk and Balearic guitars all making it as summery as you could wish for. Flipside "The Time Is Now" is a previously unreleased AOR island recording with Nassauvians man Tommy Goodwin on guitar and pal Don Lepage on harmonica, and will make you nostalgic for a time and a place never known.

Cat: GSC 4523. Rel: 11 May 20
  1. Flute Thing (edit W/Breaks) (4:30)
  2. Do What You Gotta Do (edit) (4:20)
Review: With no less than nine releases on the label to their name already, Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are Galaxy Sound Co's most experienced editors. Here they deliver another fantastic "45" packed with righteous grooves and life-affirming jazz moves. It's the latter that comes to the fore on side A's "Flute Thing", a sweet and seductive drift through picturesque jazz territory with some additional loose-limbed drum solos edited in halfway through. "Do What You Gotta Do" on the other hand is a simmering, string-laden soul treat rich in killer instrumentation, sumptuous orchestration, chunky grooves and hazy vocals. It's a fine edit of a superb cut and easily the record's standout cut.

Review: Hungarian jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo released some mighty fine music during his lifetime, including a string of brilliant albums on Impulse in the mid 1960s. By 1968 he'd left the legendary jazz imprint, but the quality of his releases just kept improving - as this reissue of key album "Dreams" proves. Naturally his fluid, partially improvised, often bluesy electric and acoustic guitar solos feature prominently throughout, bobbing and weaving around atmospheric backing tracks that variously mix and match elements of jazz, folk, South American rhythms, folk-rock, flamenco and gypsy-jazz. It's a brilliant, often awe-inspiring musical blend.

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

  1. Paradise Island (5:24)
  2. Paradise Island (Revisited) (6:22)
  3. Fair Weather Friend (3:04)
Review: You'll struggle to find many cosmic boogie/jazz-funk records rarer than Azwon's 1980 debut single, a private press gem from Florida that has long been in demand amongst collectors. Here the finest track from that double A-side seven-inch, "Paradise Island", is given the reissue treatment. It's worth picking up, not only for the swirling, spaced-out brilliance of the original version of "Paradise Island", but also the slightly bolder, Latin-tinged "Revisited" version the band re-recorded last year for this very release. The production is very similar, sound wise, meaning it's every bit as spaced out as the cut they made 40 years ago. Bonus cut "Fair Weather Friend", a dancefloor-focused jazz-funk workout recorded but not released in 1980, is also rather good.

Cat: DSC 001. Rel: 05 May 20
  1. Via Libre - "Chi Chi "Mentira"" (3:42)
  2. Grupo Amigos - "La Gir Del Diablo" (3:25)
Review: The debut release from the freshly-minted Discodelic label offers up two exceedingly rare - and rather fine - "funky Latin" cover versions from the glory years of hallucinatory funk and soul. Side A sports Via Libre's flash-fried samba-funk cover of Marcos Valle's "Chi Chi Mentira", a heady re-imagination rich in Hammond organ stabs, undulating Latin percussion, groovy bass and a percussive middle section just tailor-made for DJs who like doubling up breaks. Over on the fiip you'll find something even heavier: Grupo Amigos' celebratory, organ-heavy funk-rock take on Trio Ternura's "La Gir Del Diablo", a song that was later famously turned into an international hit by Astrud Gilberto as "Black Magic (A Gira)".

Review: Two titans of African music come together for a collaboration that will sadly never be repeated after the passing of the late Hugh Masekela. Allen's instantly recognisable drumming and Masekela's iconic trumpet are a match made in heaven - after all their paths first crossed back in the 70s thanks to Fela Kuti's galvanizing energy. Forget the throwback stuff trying to capture the spirit of the originators, this IS the originators sounding cool and deadly in every way. Funk lovers, Afrobeat heads, curious ears and dancing souls take heed - this right here is an unmissable transmission from two grandmasters in their field.

  1. Tony Alvon & Belairs - "Sexy Coffee Pot" (3:50)
  2. Stanley Turrentine - "Sister Sanctified" (4:03)
Review: We've run out of ways to describe the Breaks & Beats series of functional, floor-friendly re-edits, though by now everyone should know what to expect, namely light-touch reworks of classic funk and soul jams that extend the drum breaks for easier mixing. The series latest missive begins with a must-have rework of Tony Alvon & The Belairs' "Sexy Coffee Pot", a rare-as-hen's-teeth 1969 B-side that wraps rhythm and blues guitars and firing horn lines around one of the greatest drum breaks of all time. Over on side B it's all about Stanley Turrentine's 1972 jazz-funk gem "Sister Sanctified" (a track that has never before appeared on a seven-inch single, even unofficially) and its attractive fusion of snappy breakbeats, hazy sax riffs and liquid electric piano lines.

  6. Love Is Everywhere (8:31)
Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing of any serious jazz enthusiast: a recently rediscovered recording of a live performance made by the Pharoah Sanders Quartet at the Grand Auditorium at Studio 104, Paris, in 1975. The tenor saxophonist is undoubtedly the star of the show throughout, though the fluidity of the double bass playing, the loose-limbed drumming and the rush-inducing breeziness of the piano parts - especially on "Love Is Here" parts one and two, which reminded us of another Sanders classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" - are all equally as ear-catching. Musically, it's as inspired as you'd expect, nestling somewhere between the great maestro's greatest "astral jazz" recordings and more traditional forms of jazz.

Cat: AS 671AB. Rel: 14 Apr 20
  1. Little Sunflower (9:11)
Review: Best known amongst house heads for being the source of the lilting orchestral sample in Pepe Bradock's "Deep Burnt", Freddie Hubbard's 1979 version of "Little Sunflower" is a soul-jazz classic and a half. Since the full version of Hubbard's vocal re-make (the trumpeter first recorded an instrumental take in 1968) only ever appeared on a hard-to-find promo 12", this Record Store Day reissue should be an essential purchase. It remains a gentle, breezy and sunset-ready jazz-dance gem, with Hubbard's emotion-rich vocals and mazy trumpet solos riding Latin-tinged percussion, elastic double bass and some suitably jammed-out jazz pianos. In other words, it's the kind of life-affirming treat that's capable of spreading sunshine on even the cloudiest day.

Review: Rewind to 1975, Brazilian supergroup Azymuth hit their richest creative vein with this self-titled full-length. Just as the band remain so themselves, this is still hugely relevant and ridiculously on-point considering it's 40 years on the clock. Proof can be found on every track from the sedative harmonic charms of the opener "Linha Do Horizonte", the raw slap bass funk, velvet keys and soaring synths on "Seems Like This" and the frenetic, almost techy mentality of "Wait For My Turn". An essential addition to any collection, this would have blown minds to pieces back in 1975.

Review: In 2016 saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings established the "Ancestors" collective of South African musicians to perform live and record debut album "Wisdom Of Elders", a journey into the spiritual and avant-garde side of jazz inspired in part by the struggles of previous generations of black musicians. Four years on, the Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming member has reassembled the collective for album number two, "We Are Sent Here By History". It treads similar musical territory to its similarly essential predecessor, with Hutchings and his South African collaborators presenting tracks that, in his words, "meditate on the fact of our coming extinction as a species". While the music is nowhere near as doom-laden and miserable as that may suggest - it's very entertaining, thoughtful and spiritually involved - as albums go "We Are Sent Here By History" is certainly hard hitting.

  1. Everybody (4:01)
  2. And Then We Were One (4:47)
Review: Expansion's latest must-check seven-inch mines Roy Ayers' 1983 album "Lots Of Love", a sparkling post-disco set that combined the vibraphonist's usual jazz-funk flavours with colourful synthesizers and genuine boogie flavours. "Everybody" on the A-side is particularly potent; a lolloping synth-boogie head-nodder rich in life-affirming synthesizer squelches, rubbery jazz-funk bass, fluid Ayers vibraphone solos and background vocals that sneakily reference "Everybody Loves The Sunshine". Flipside "And Then We Were One" is if anything even more summery in feel, with mazy synth and vibraphone motifs dancing atop a killer jazz-funk groove. It's a little more up-tempo than the A-side, but arguably a little less addictive.

Review: Dynamite Cuts & The George Semper Music Archives present the first official re-issue of the Funk and Soul band The Perfect Circle from their 1977 self titled The Perfect Circle, LP. The peak of George Semper's music legacy as a "Godfather of Bay Area Funk" and "Hammond B3 Hero" Semper produced, performed on, and released the LP on his Los Angeles based Inner City Records label. The Perfect Circle band is known for their "Bay Area Funk" San Francisco/Oakland sound a unique fusion of funk, jazz, soul, & rock akin to bands Tower of Power and War. The Perfect Circle, LP has since become rare-vinyl grail among DJs, music lovers and collectors worldwide! A superb work, we chose our two favorites leading with the disco-funk dancer title track introducing the band The Perfect Circle. On the flip side is the rare groove The Hands of Time, a b-boy, disco, jazz-funk floor shaker. Don't miss out on The Perfect dancer, DJs tool and one for the collectors!

Review: Since emerging at the dawn of the century, Vienna-raised saxophonist and singer Muriel Grossmann has released a dozen albums that fuse her European jazz heritage with everything from modernism and free-jazz, to Afro-jazz and classic spiritualism. "Elevation", a vinyl-only release, sees her debut on Jazzman with a bold and vibrant set that flits between wild, free-jazz-meets-spiritual jazz epics ("Elevation"), more considered spiritual workouts (the Ornette Coleman-ish "Rising"), double bass-heavy soundscape jazz (the foreboding but brilliant "Chant"), bouts of laidback, sun-kissed positivity ("Your Pace") and emotion-rich languid jazz bliss (closing cut "Peace For All", where Grossmann is in particularly fine form).

Review: Galaxy Sound give this 1997 hip hop classic a new twist with some slick jazz stylings. Lil Kim's "Crush On You", is known by all but here it becomes something completely different: a forgotten jazz funk gem, colourful trumpet leads awash with lush drums and timeless soul. The flipside houses a re-edit of Jeff Lorber's "Rain Dance", which is in fact the original source of the samples on Lil Kim's track, and one that has been used on more than 20 other big time tunes. Here it's subtly tweaked but still remains a classic bit of jazz-flecked hip hop with some proper rude vocals.

Review: Recorded sometime in the late 1970s, and previously only available as a private press release on a tiny Maryland label, "Miracles" is the sole album from gospel preacher/singer Reverend Norman Weeks and his backing band, the Revelations. Little info is available, though if the modern soul end of gospel is your thing it's well worth picking up. As you'd expect, the vocals from Weeks and his collaborators are soulful and righteous, while the accompanying music is impeccably played and surprisingly well produced given the likely budget constraints. Highlights include the heavy funk-soul strut of "It Took A Miracle", the Bob James-influenced brilliance of "I Wanna Sing For You" and fizzing LP opener and bona fide dancefloor rocker "I Will Stand On It".

Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

Review: Mukatsuku struck gold again on this latest first time on a "45" issue. It boasts a couple of lesser-known jazz-funk fusion jams which originally featured on Argentine musician Jorge Navarro's 1977 album "Navarro Con Polenta", an LP that has never been issued outside of South America. A-side "Funk Yourself" is a bustling, high-octane jazz-funk Hammond licks and spiralling horns jumping above a Blaxploitation style backing track. "Repartamos El Funky" is a more laid back but no less musically intricate affair, with a variety of high-grade electric piano and guitar solos riding seemingly endless jazz style drum solos and rubbery bass. Juno hand-numbered copies come in exclusive sleeves and this 45 not be repressed. A-side "Flying Fantasy" originally appeared on the Spanish producer's 2016 album "Resistance Sonore", but is here featured in instrumental form for the first time. If anything, it's better than the original version, largely because we get to revel in Friedli's mazy Fender Rhodes solos, rubbery jazz-funk synth bass and loose-limbed, West London style broken beats. You'll find plenty more jaunty jazz-funk vibes and liquid electric piano solos on B-side cut "Rhodes E Serenidade", which first slipped out way back in 2015. 1. Step In To Our Life (5:29)
  2. For Real (3:50)
Review: When it comes to offering up seven-inch singles of tracks taken from classic or sought-after albums, Dynamite Cuts has an impressive track record. They're at it again here, this time mining Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson's 1978 jazz-funk/disco fusion masterpiece "Step Into Our Life". On the A-side you'll find the languid, loose and groovy title track, a memorable affair in which dueling vibraphone and trumpet solos make merry atop a head-nodding, toe-tapping jazz-funk groove. Flipside "For Real" is a little more energetic and loved-up, with touchy-feely vocals, husling slap-bass and sci-fi synths to the fore.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

Review: The music that makes up Harmony of Difference, Kamasi Washington's first EP of note since the release of acclaimed 2015 album The Epic, was premiered live as a "six-track movement" earlier this year. The "suite" - here stretched across both sides of an essential 12" - sees Washington continue to explore the idea of what it means to be black in America in the 21st century. Musically, the EP contains some of his smoothest and most laidback compositions yet, with all his musical collaborators being on fine form. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 14-minute flipside "The Truth", an almost operatic jazz epic full of swelling choral contributions, fizzing drum solos, rising horns and, of course, plenty of Washington's distinctive saxophone.

Review: For the latest volume in their essential Spiritual Jazz compilation series - the eleventh overall - Jazzman has decided to take a trawl through the archives of Danish imprint SteepleChase, focusing specifically on "esoteric modal" and "progressive jazz" originally released between 1974 and '84. It's an impressively bright, breezy and crystal-clear affair - you can hear every cymbal hit, saxophone solo, piano note, snare and rim-shot in glorious clarity - with highlights appearing thick and fast throughout. Our current favourites include the haunting flutes, glistening guitar solos and skipping grooves of Rene McLean's "Aida", the hard-to-pigeonhole inventiveness and cross-cultural fusion of Jim McNeely's "Tipe Tizwe" and the vibraphone-laden up-tempo hustle of Khan Jamal's "Dark Warrior". That said, every track is superb, making this a must-have for spiritual jazz enthusiasts everywhere.

Review: The 2000 Black crew is keeping tight-lipped about the details surrounding this release, describing the previously unknown Project X as, "a non-partisan group primarily operational in the late 20th century" whose "only confirmed action was creating and compiling previously unreleased music to highlight various events of the time". So far, so mysterious. Whatever the identity of those behind the project, the album is well worth a listen. Its shadowy creators flit between high-octane dancefloor jazz ("S-Kai", "Q To Start"), organic downtempo grooves (the sun-kissed "Grape Juice" and samba-soaked warmth of "The Lost Words"), synth-sporting takes on the heady Rotary Comnection sound ("Psych") and giddy jazz-funk ("The Recovery"). The real stand out though is "Brave Games", which sounds like a thrill-a-minute fusion of Batacuda, jazz-funk and dancefloor jazz.

Review: Chip Wickham, who usually goes by the first name of Roger, returns to Madrid's excellent Lovemonk label with a mini LP to inaugurare the start of summer, which means a start to some pretty killer shades of balearica! In fairness, however, this album and the man's sound are much more in line with the jazzy end of the spectrum, breaking beats and forming new, forward-thinking arrangements. For instance, the opening "Shamal Wind" is a wonderful excursion into dreamier realms of the flute, while "Snake Eyes" picks up the tempo and makes way for an album thy can be plaid on your headphones, out on the car speakers, and most certainly in the dance! A wonderfully composed piece of music from a rising talent of true broken beat.
