Tighten Up
Tighten Up (blue vinyl 7" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: OGR 817 BLUE. Rel: 06 May 22
  1. Luchito & Nestor - "Tighten Up" (4:12)
  2. Nestor Alvarez - "Just Add Vibes" (3:06)
Review: Original Gravity return with another pair of tunes to elevate your soul. This time it is Luchito and Nestro Alvarez serving up the sounds on a limited 7" packed with Latin funk. 'Tighten Up' actually couldn't be any tighter. The drums prickle as they race along with breezy sung-spoken vocals up top and big horn work that will liven up any party. On the reverse is a more distinctly samba-styled tune with rich bossa rhythms, plenty of golden percussion and expressive horn work lighting up the grooves. It might be cold outside these days, but it will be warm inside with this one playing.

Cat: FLIES 4537. Rel: 19 May 22
  1. Sessomatto (3:21)
  2. Kinky Peanuts (3:35)
Review: The late Italian film composer Armando Trovajoli was best known for his Italian expressionist / exploitation soundtracks. It's not so known that he made funk: 'Sessomato' and 'Kinky Peanuts' is as such a lesser known rarity, and consists of two made as part of his soundtrack to the film Sessomatto. With vocals from Edda Dell'Orso, the two tracks here are whispry, clean, tambourine-rattling and erotic; trumpets and drums buzz away on the A, while the B opts for clavichordy samba goodness.

Review: The 1978 self-titled album by the free soul band Lemuria remains much talked about around rare groove circles. Formed by Kirk Thompson of the iconic Kalapana, it's a proud statement of Hawaiian AOR, and highlights the magic touch of Thompson as both a keyboardist, and behind the mixers, his work as the album's serving producer. For this new reissue edition, P-VINE is including three bonus tracks and two alternate takes for the first time on vinyl, resulting in this deluxe fourteen track double gatefold package.

Review: Coming quickly of the release of the single in March, newcomer jazz-funk band Surprise Chef's 'Velodrome' get a limited 7" acetate release by their label Big Crown. Backsided on the B with the track 'Springs Theme', this is a laid back, easygoing instrumental piece, with a heavy drum break and an earworm synth line guaranteed to have you humming it long after the song is over.

Review: Glasgow-based musician, producer, DJ and curator Rebecca Vasmant makes her first appearance on the Tru Thoughts label here. It is a special Record Store Day Release that blends live music chops and electronic production as well as the artists passion for jazz and broken beat. It is a fine follow up to her revered debut album 'With Love, From Glasgow'. 'Dance Yourself Free' is a big, vibrant tune with standout horn work and restless drum energy and 'Anthropology' (feat Nadia Carveth & Chris Greive) is more smooth and late night in its design. The flip side offers the expressive 'Procrastination' and super sweet shuffler 'Broken Biscuits.'

Sucka Nigga
Sucka Nigga (limited 7")
Cat: OC 009. Rel: 20 Apr 22
  1. A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
  2. Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

  8. The Ricitic (5:45)
Review: Originally recorded in 1962 and released in 1963, Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins' collaborative masterpiece remains one of the greats of all time. As well as Ellington on piano and Hawkins on saxophone, you get the sheer joy of Ray Nance on violin, Aaron Bell on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums. That's not the whole line-up either, but fundamentally this is about Ellington's compositions, which get played out with a silken touch. Pieces like 'The Ricitic' feel as light as a feather, proving how subtlety and delicacy are just as much a testament to skill as any performance fireworks.

  10. Joint 17 (8:10)
Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

Got Myself A Good Man
  1. Got Myself A Good Man (5:06)
  2. Mango Meat (4:53)
Review: Rare Groove Spectrum Vol. 2 on Freestyle back in January was a superbly well received collection of reworks and imaginings of soul classics. Now Lance Ferguson follows it up with a tidy 7" that features his take on 'Mango Meat' as well as his unique Latin soul cover of Gladys Knight's classic 'Got Myself a Good Man.' It's a bustling jazz-funk gem with glorious flutes bursting out of the mix and rollin drum rhythms. 'Mango meat' goes a litter deeper with its more rolling drum work and psyched-out guitars and big horns.

La Poliziotta (Soundtrack)

Review: We've been served a good banquet of dance reissues from classic Italian film soundtracks of late, and Gianni Ferrio's 'La Poliziotta' is one of the best of the bunch. Combining two choice cuts from mysterious film director Stefano Vanzina's aka. Steno's sexy detective film 'La Poliziotta', this 7" reissue is a finger-clicking, jazz-swinging foray through instrumental funk.

  9. Dominguinhos - "Baiao Violado" (3:57)
  10. Jorge Ben - "Take It Easy My Brother Charles" (2:38)
Review: Anyone who has heard DJ Marky do one of his "non D&B" sets will know that his love of funk, soul, disco and boogie is real, while there's far more classic Brazilian music in his record collection than some may expect. It makes sense then that he's been asked to provide the follow-up to DJ Format's Brazil 45s box set and pick some vintage carnival-ready gems of his own from Mr Bongo's bulging vaults. There are naturally some stone-cold classics present - see Jorge Ben's floor-slayer 'Take it Easy My Brother Charles' and the boogie-era smoothness of Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetta's 'Eva' - but also plenty of lesser-known samba and MPB gems stretched across the five "45s".

Review: Blue Note are on a reissuing roll, not shying from revisiting the work of their most treasured jazz acts this year. The latest in their Classic Editions comes by way of Donald Byrd, whose timeless 1975 album Places And Spaces documents the trumpeter's fearless jazz-funk fusion era. This being Blue Note, you can expect only the best rendition of this orchestral jazz-funk suite that a vinyl pressing has to offer. This version is an all-analog remaster, by legendary cutting engineer Kevin Gray, from the original tapes. Expect a thorough justice-doing of the hits, 'Dominoes' and 'Wind Parade', which boast production credits from the infamous Larry Mizell.

Review: Holy grail soul heads take note, as this highly sought after piece gets a much-needed repress. Michael Orr recorded Spread Love with Carey Harris in 1976, and it's been a prized totem for collectors ever since on the simple brilliance of the music. This is classic soul in the vein of Roy Ayers or perhaps Gil Scott Heron circa Pieces Of A Man - tender 70s musicianship with warmth in its bones and sincerity in its message. It's a record to keep you cosy on a cold Sunday, not least on outright ballads like 'Feelings' featuring Bernadine Mitchell on a powerful vocal turn. Don't miss out on the chance to grab this gem while it's here - with only 300 copies pressed it won't be around for long.

Review: French jazz-fusion act Cortex's 1975 debut album Troupeau Bleu has long been in demand amongst record collectors and dusty-fingered DJs, not least because it's14 tracks contain all manner of killer drum breaks, fast-fingered electric piano solos, surprise 1970s synth sounds and nods aplenty to French lounge music. As this essential Trad Vibe issue proves, the album is every bit as good as you'd expect, with floor-friendly jazz-funk freak-outs sitting side by side with samba workouts, laidback jams of the kind associated with Bob James, piano jazz interludes, jazz-rock slam-downs and much more besides. Basically, it's the kind of freewheeling but impeccably produced set that deserves a place in any jazz-funk fan's record collection.

Review: Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film version of Haruki Murakami's novel Drive My Car has never before seen an official soundtrack release, until now. Afflicted by neon atmospheres and emotive piano, every piece found on this melancholic masterwork contains instruments played and produced entirely by composer Eiko Ishibashi: synths, flutes, melodion, vibraphone, foley. Rock legendf Jim O'Rourke lends a hand on everything guitar, making this a multifaceted greasers' trip through a whirlwind sonic romance.

Her latest album was recorded in Curitiba and Sao Paulo, and features drums and percussion from Airto Moreira, guitarist Jose Neto, Diana Purim on vocals and more besides. Together they serve up a brace fo brilliantly cheeky but functional jazz cuts to get dance floors in a spin. 'Sumthin' Else' has an almost samba shuffle and plenty of florid trumpets lighting up the busy groove. 'Wiggle Wiggle' then goes direct for your ass with its raw boom bap and noodling chords all finished with some big horn work

  4. Nestor Alvarez - "Lupita" (3:07)
Review: London-based funk-mongers Original Gravity serve up some serious Latin heat from the mighty Luchito and Nestor Alvarez. Both artists were last on the label earlier this year for the Latin Fever Vol. 2 single, and now they're back with more life-affirming bursts of funk. Luchito takes up the A side with two tracks - 'Broasted Or Toasted' is a cool-as-you-like bit of jazzy beatdown with some sweet flute, while 'Hey Guajira Baby' is a singalong anthem rendered in the sweetest salsa tones. Alvarez is on the flip with the pattering bongo magic of 'Bang The Bongo Side' and the heavy groove of 'Lupita', which sounds like it's packed with deadly breaks for those who still like a little crate digging.

Review: Les Baxter was undoubtedly one of the leading lights in the exotica movement. Along with Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman he gave Western audiences an impression of distant lands through quaint orchestration that in the 21st Century speaks more to 1960s middle America than any other culture. His landmark The Soul Of The Drums is an immaculate case in point, full of swooning strings, pattering bongos and sensuous horns which teeter on the edge of retail soundtracks as much as big band jazz. For a trip into a bizarre but velvety-smooth time capsule, you can't go far wrong with this record.

Originally released in 1963, this collaboration with legendary baritone singer Johnny Hartman captures Coltrane at his mellow best. Alongside the headliners, the line-up on this album also features McCoy Turner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the result is an understated, sumptuous listen to lose yourself in. Sentimental and melancholic in all the best ways, this is sensitive musicianship at its finest.

Review: Yet another first time reissue of a classic, Mongo Santamaria's 'Sofrito'. Don't be confused by the pico de gallo on the front cover; this isn't a salsa album, but rather a career-defining jazz, Afro-Cuban music and funk selection of delights. First released in 1976, it was the master conguero's (conga player's) most defining album, and now gets a proper remaster by Kevin Gray.

Review: This great album was first put out by EMI Sweden, and if you can find one of those early original copies it is worth well over $500. Thankfully, those of us more bothered about the music than the sautes of the physical product can cop this reissue of Doris's debut LP for a fair price. It has hints of Joni Mitchell as well as Led Zeppelin and Doris herself was back dup by her hubby on bass, who provide plenty of killer funky b-lines under the experimental melodies up top. Add in Janne Carlsson on drums and great work by Bernot Egerladh on organ and you have an essential record.

Review: Hank Mobley was a magnificent jazz saxophonist who struck a smooth tone somewhere in between the snarl of John Coltrane and the dulcet purr of Stan Getz. This album was originally recorded in 1957 and released as The Hank Mobley Quintet Featuring Sonny Clark in 1984. It features Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Sonny Clark on piano, Jimmy Rowser on bass and Art Taylor on drums, and it serves as a perfect, mellow trip through the hard bop era. It's also long overdue a repress after last being available in limited quantities back when the 1984 issue first came around.

Review: Norah Jones have travelled far from her debut album in 2002, but it would be tough for her to match the knockout success she found with that first canny fusion of pop, jazz, country and soul. She won five Grammys for the certified diamond Come Away With Me, including Record Of The Year and Best New Artist. Listening back after all this time the big hits 'Don't Know Why' and the title track sound as spellbinding as ever, and now Blue Note are issuing this special four-vinyl edition with a mammoth amount of unreleased tracks, session takes and alternate versions. For Jones fans, of which there are literally millions, this will be hard to resist.

Review: There are seemingly no limits to the music Emotional Rescue will put out. This time they look back to the post punk scene of Bristol in the early 80s. Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

I Want You Back
Cat: BGPS 049. Rel: 24 Mar 16
  1. Harold Mabern - "I Want You Back" (5:24)
  2. Funk Inc - "Sister Janie" (5:14)
Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

Review: Not many vibraphonists score their own albums, but Joel Ross is an exception. Returning to Blue Note for the third time, 'The Parable Of The Poet' spans several instrumental vibraphone movements, in what might be seen as a muted jazz smorgasbord featuring extra instrumental contributions from saxophonists Immanuel Wilkins and Maria Grand, bassist Rick Rosato, drummer Craig Weinrib et. al. Atmospheric and with a live feel, it's not one to be missed.

Kairo Bancou Moulu
  1. Kairo Bancou Moulu (4:43)
  2. The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Review: Following a period spent working with French library music maestro Janko Nilovic, Soul Surfers' main men Igo Zhukovsky and Romeo Miussky were inspired enough to jettison the rest of their revivalist funk and soul band and make a more freewheeling, spiritually- minded set of their own. Igor & Romeo's Sound Excitement is naturally rooted in sounds they've previously explored - think library music, soundtracks, deep funk and psychedelic soul - but also touches on jazz, jazz-funk, dub and exotica. It's a heady, hugely entertaining blend all told, with the pair's fine bass and drum parts - allied with their use of vintage, Soviet-era recording equipment - guaranteeing an authentic retro-futurist sound and highlights aplenty.

Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.
