Review: Iconic recordings from 1959 blessed with s a fresh, vibrant energy. The opener, with its elegant trumpet lines and meticulous rhythm section, feels like a masterclass in restraintibuilding from delicate intricacies to full-blown, fluid improvisation. As the album progresses, each track shows Davis's intuitive connection with his bandmates, effortlessly weaving complexity into accessible melodies. The slow-burning 'Blue in Green' stands out, with its haunting beauty and rich, emotive depth. Throughout, the album is a showcase of Davis's transformative approach to jazz, fusing cool jazz elements with the raw emotional power that defined his later work. A definitive, timeless piece.

Review: Hip Hop Legends is a limited 45 series that reissues classics from the classic era of 90s rap and 'I Am I Be' comes with silky bars and storytelling lyrics over warm melancholic chords and subtle boom-bap beats. On the flip, things get stripped back a little as the same cut gets an instrumental. It's a version that allows those chords and some gentle horns as well as big guitar licks to really shine while the groove continues to roll on.

Recorded in 1970 as part of Victor's "Japanese Jazz" series, this album showcases three powerful trios-Yamashita, Oki, and Ohno-with vocalist Kasai and each artist contributes their own unique style. Yamashita led the scene with his vibrant playing, Oki brought fresh perspectives from Osaka, Ohno's versatility spanned modern to new jazz and Kasai's vocal prowess was just beginning to bloom at this time. Together, the seven artists create a dynamic two-disc trip that is full of the famous originality and intensity of Japanese jazz.

Crown Ones
Review: This 7" release sees Amsterdam-based Soul Supreme and NYC drummer Jay Mumford continue their collaborative exploration of hip-hop and funk classics. The duo, known for their captivating Instagram covers, deliver fully realised reimaginings of two iconic tracks. On the A-side, Digable Planets' '9th Wonder' gets a modern update, with Jay's thunderous drumming and Soul Supreme's funky clavinet work transforming the original into a vibrant jazz-funk odyssey. The addition of cascading horns and a New Orleans funk break further elevate the track, showcasing the duo's impressive musicianship and arrangement skills. The flipside takes on People Under the Stairs' 'Crown Ones', transforming the hip-hop classic into a heavy funk anthem. Soul Supreme's catchy Rhodes lines and soaring solos are complemented by Jay's driving groove and a powerful horn section, resulting in a slice of uncut jazz-funk that's both raw and sophisticated. A great illustration of the duo's ability to breathe new life into classic tracks, creating something fresh and exciting while paying homage to the past.

Review: Saxophonist Sahib Shihab might not enjoy the reputation of some of his peers but he was a fine jazzman. For this legendary album he worked with a small but hugely talented collective of peers that included Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. The one of a kind sound they cooked up back in 1970 has endured to this day but has always been hard to find and expensive. This reissue rights that wrong and reminds what a classic it is.

With Biggie having spat near infinite wisdom on this playful pop diversion - "it's like the more money we come across the more problems we see" - this killer 7" version takes heed, limiting its quantity to fewer than 1000, in case demand outstrips supply and concerns of fan rapaciousness bubble over. Released in 1970 as part of Victor's Japanese Jazz series, it's all about capturing what it means to be Japanese through music. The album showcases an incredible synergy between Takeo Moriyama's dynamic drumming, Yasuo Arakawa's rich bass grooves, and Masahiko Sato's expressive piano work, all beautifully complementing Miyazawa's heartfelt saxophone. It's a stunning tribute to nostalgia and nature, making it an essential piece of cultural history.

Review: Isao Suzuki's follow-up to his breakthrough album captures the essence of Japanese jazz in the 1970s, a period where the traditional swing style was redefined with a unique, more restrained approach. This album features exceptional interplay between Suzuki and saxophonist Kazumi Watanabe, with an added depth from pianist Kunihiko Sugano and drummer Tetsujiroh Obara. Notably, bassist Nobuyoshi Ino joins on two tracks, including a stirring rendition of 'Body and Soul', bringing a fuller sound to the ensemble and highlighting Suzuki's innovative use of the cello within the small group context. The music, originally released in 1974, avoids the dated, overly rigid patterns of some American jazz of the time, instead opting for more fluid and expressive forms. Reissued now, this album stands as an essential masterpiece in the Japanese jazz canon, showcasing Suzuki's ability to create timeless, intricate and captivating jazz that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Elza Soares - "Mas Que Nada"

Review: The 12th release on Mr. Bongo's signature 45s series saw a reissue of two foundational releases in Brazil's modern popular music category; now the record hears a second round, fresh again off the master metal lacquer. On the A, we hear Brazilian samba luminary Elza Soares covering Jorge Ben's classic 'Mas Que Nada' - albeit with a hoarser vocal tone, such was Soares' signature voice, one which only led to a whopping 34-album career. B-sider Elizabeth, by contrast, upholds a mystery; the artist was nicknamed "Gatinha do Mato" ("jungle cat"), and recorded 'Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente' at some indeterminate point in 1960s Sao Paolo, when and where Brazilian local styles blended with funk and rock.

Review: This album recorded by Tatum and Webster in 1956 came just prior to Tatum's passing less than two months later. Revered as a masterpiece, the dynamic interplay between Webster's blend of aggression and lyricism and Tatum's flamboyance and delicacy creates a captivating encounter, with Callendar and Douglass providing impeccable support. Reissued previously by Essential Jazz Classics, this new edition adds bonus tracks from a 1953 Tatum solo session and four numbers from a summit meeting between Webster and Teddy Wilson. The opener sets a languid tempo, diverging from the breakneck pace of many bebop jams, establishing the album's relaxed vibe. And even as later cuts quicken the pace, there's an underlying sense of ease that permeates throughout. Tatum's cascades of notes serve as ornamental accents rather than urgent directives, while Webster, despite the excess reverb of the era, focuses on melody.

Jazz Is Dead 22

Review: At 88, Ebo Taylor, the legendary Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat pioneer, made his U.S. debut at the Jazz Is Dead concert series, captivating audiences nationwide. This historic visit coincided with the recording of Ebo Taylor JID022, a groundbreaking psychedelic afrobeat album produced with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Younge expressed the significance of this collaboration, likening it to working with Fela Kuti, emphasising the dream of capturing Ebo's essence on analog tape. The album features swirling horns, gritty guitars and polyrhythmic percussion reminiscent of Taylor's seminal 1970s work, alongside spiritually rich backing vocals that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Ebo's heartfelt lyrics, exploring themes of love, peace and spirituality, resonate with nearly a century of wisdom. Tracks like 'Beye Bu, Beye Ba' and 'Kusi Na Sibo' impart life lessons on gratitude and divine provision, solidifying Ebo Taylor JID022 as an essential addition to his storied catalogue and a crown jewel for Jazz Is Dead. This release coincides with his eagerly anticipated tour across the Americas, showcasing the enduring legacy of a true musical icon.

Review: At 88, Ghanaian highlife and afrobeat legend Ebo Taylor made his first-ever journey to the US, performing in the Jazz Is Dead concert series. These shows, which sold out across the country, led to an unexpected and electrifying collaboration between Taylor, Adrian Younge, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The result is a psychedelic afrobeat album, recorded at Younge's Linear Labs studio, that's bound to thrill fans of both classic West African funk and afrobeat purists. The album channels the raw energy of Ebo's 70s recordings, with swirling horns, fuzzed-out guitars, and the unmistakable polyrhythmic percussion that made Taylor a revolutionary figure in African music. "Collaborating with Ebo Taylor is a bucket-list accomplishment," says Younge, likening the experience to working with another afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti. The analog recording style, embracing the gritty textures of 70s Africa, gives this album an authenticity that's impossible to ignore. Tracks like 'Beye Bu, Beye Ba' and 'Kusi Na Sibo' exemplify Taylor's profound lyricism. His reflections on love, spirituality, and gratitude echo his decades-long career, while the ensemble of Ghanaian vocalists adds a spiritual depth that transports listeners back to his prime. Ebo's son, Henry Taylor, also features, proving himself a formidable talent in his own right. This album is not just a nod to the past but a crowning achievement in Taylor's enduring legacy. For connoisseurs of afrobeat, it's a standout moment in both Ebo's catalogue and the growing canon of the Jazz Is Dead series.

Review: Kunihiko Sugano's 1974 album, reissued by the revered TBM label, is a captivating showcase of his pianistic finesse. Known as a "piano magician," Sugano channels Erroll Garner's vibrant touch in compositions that brim with elegance and rhythmic ingenuity. TBM's remastering adds a fresh clarity to Sugano's work, meticulously handled by Bernie Grundman to retain the rich, analogue warmth of the original. This reissue, part of the revered Wa-Jazz series, appeals to both long-time jazz aficionados and newer vinyl enthusiasts, complete with insightful liner notes that connect Sugano's legacy with the label's enduring influence.

Review: Monika Linges' voice sways between jazz and bossa nova with a natural ease that makes it seem like she was born for this. But her latest track pushes things furtherigently drawing you in with a relaxed yet intricate arrangement, before layering in subtle harmonies and rhythmic flourishes. There's a warmth to the way she sings, each note spilling effortlessly into the next, hinting at a deeper emotional core. It's a performance that feels personal yet universal, bringing the complexities of her influences into a fresh light. By the time it fades, you're left with the feeling of something timelessia quiet reflection on both genre and soul.

Review: Now reissued by Universal comes a delicious drip-fed cochlear tray of delights from New York jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove and his quintet, first released in 2008. Perhaps one of the smoothest hard bop records there is, this one enjoins us to both eat and listen clean. Notable for its inclusion of the composition 'Strasbourg/St. Denis', which has since gone on to become a modern-day jazz standard, Hargrove lays a well-ribbed pastry base for producer Larry Clothier to work his magic upon; 'I'm Not So Sure' and 'Joy Is Sorrow Unmasked' are the wisened aftertastes that follow, neither totally rejecting nor cloying to the jazz precedents of old (though it could've believably been released much long ago).

Inomata's legendary, boundary-pushing stick work shines, leading Sound Limited through a heady mix of originals and covers like 'Runaway Child' and 'Smack Water Jack.' Review: Yazz Ahmed's latest offering blends the melancholy of her Bahraini heritage with her expansive jazz vision. Tracks like 'The Pearl Diver's Tale' and 'Sandstorm' weave together traditional Arabic instrumentation with modern jazz structures, creating an immersive and dynamic soundscape. Collaborating with vocalists Natacha Atlas and Brigitte Beraha, Ahmed's compositions grow even more poignant, pulling from the sorrowful songs of Bahrain's pearl divers and the rhythms of women's traditional drumming. This 180-gram vinyl 2XLP marks a new chapter in Ahmed's career, combining English and Arabic lyrics to bring an entirely new perspective to her already unique sound.

He has dropped a wide array of sounds in single and album form including a great cover of Joni Mitchell's Blue album. His latest 7" marks the 100th release on Disc Minor and is named in honour of that. 'STE 100' is a lush, tender dinner jazz sound with muted horns and warm reeds over a meandering bassline. 'The Way Of The Dragon' is as lively a tune as you might expect given it is named after a martial arts movie. It has busy drums and jagged horn leads with plenty of percussive energy all carrying you away.

Although four tracks of his have previously appeared on the 2009 Legends of Benin compilation, this bumper pack features 16 of Pedro's best works, all of which captivated Africa at the time. His vibrant blend of Agbadja, Cuban fon, jerk, highlife and more unique styles, all of which come with vocals sung in Fon, Mina, Yoruba, French, English and Spanish, add up to one hell of a rich sound. This is a great testament to the artist's extraordinary legacy.

Review: Sun Ra's When Angels Speak of Love, originally released in 1966 on his Saturn label, remains a rare and avant-garde gem. Pressed in extremely limited quantitiesiaround 150 copiesithis record was initially sold via mail order and at live performances. The album, recorded during 1963 sessions at the Choreographer's Workshop in New York, captures Ra's Arkestra at a time of intense experimentation. The rehearsal space's warehouse-like acoustics add an otherworldly texture to the music, further amplified by Tommy Hunter's innovative tape reverb. The album showcases Ra's controlled chaos, rejecting the label of "free jazz" while embracing liberation through structured improvisation. Tracks like 'Next Stop Mars', a sprawling 18-minute epic in its mono version, reveal bold performances from Marshall Allen and John Gilmore, pushing their horns to daring extremes. Ra's own piano workirooted in tonal centers but interspersed with thunderous rumblingicreates a dense, cosmic soundscape. With influences from contemporaries like John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, When Angels Speak of Love sits comfortably within the avant-garde jazz movement of the 1960s, yet maintains its unique Sun Ra eccentricity. Now reissued on vinyl, this album invites listeners to experience the cosmic, pre-psychedelic atmosphere Ra and his Arkestra crafted over half a century ago.

Recorded at the Glasgow Jazz Festival 2024, the album captures the band's energetic performance and their deep respect for Hancock's music. Mama Terra stays true to the spirit of the original while adding their own unique flavour, replacing the synth parts with a captivating blend of vocals, saxophone, and effects-laden bass. The album also incorporates elements from other Hancock classics like 'Cantaloupe Island' and 'Butterfly', creating a dynamic and imaginative tribute to a true jazz legend.

Review: John Coltrane's exploration of modal jazz shines through in this energetic and thought-provoking performance. Opening with 'Naima,' the track takes an introspective yet powerful approach, allowing us to see Coltrane's unique ability to blend intricate melodic lines with a deep sense of emotional expression. The rhythm section, led by Elvin Jones on drums, locks in with Coltrane's saxophone, creating a sense of tension and release throughout the album. Tracks like 'Cousin Mary' introduce a playful, upbeat energy, offering a contrast to the more meditative moments. This release is a testament to Coltrane's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining an innate emotional depth.

Review: 1969 was the year of release of this one and only album by Japanese jazz pianist Hideo Ichikawa, vibraphonist Hiroshi Matsumoto, bassist Kunimitsu Inaba and drummer Motohiko Hino, all in collaboration. A one-off coming-together, it centred on the valerian vibes of Matsumoto, whose star instrument, the vibraphone, was bound to take centre stage for its comparative novelty, not to mention the fact that Matsumoto himself had been practicing before the others. An honorary work, this urbane masterpiece hears tasteful vibraphonic panning in full stereo, as blue passing notes collide with expert steel brushings and untied chord playing, resulting in a unique but salubrious listen.

Review: Sun Ra Arkestra’s bandleader since 1958, Marshall Allen, will always be known for his hyper-effected sax wayfarings; he treats a simple monophonic brass instrument as a vessel for psychic voyaging, onstage and off. Perhaps, however, this has meant he’s been too freewheeling in his approach: Somehow, in over 70 years since joining the Arkestra, Allen had never recorded a solo album. That all changed just two days after his 100th birthday, resulting in what you hear here. Now the debut album by a live legend unfolds, like a rogue planet hidden behind a supernova. This proverbial “new dawn” draws on both new beginnings and legacies, waxing gibbous between big band swing, freer-form danceoffs, and even a vocal hoverer with Neneh Cherry.

Review: Capturing the mighty John Coltrane in transition, bridging his earlier accessible works and the spiritually charged explorations of his later years, this was recorded in 1961 as he moved to Impulse! Records, with the album ably showing his newfound creative freedom. The centerpiece, 'Ole', is an 18-minute masterpiece of trance-inducing brilliance. Its North African and Iberian-inspired modes echo the mystical essence of Islamic Spain. With Eric Dolphy's mesmerising flute solo and the interplay of two bassists, Art Davis and Reggie Workman, it achieves an eerie, entrancing mysticism. 'Dahomey Dance' shifts to bluesier terrain, with Trane's tenor sax and Dolphy's unconventional solo pushing boundaries. The lush 'Aisha', penned by McCoy Tyner, exudes sensual beauty, while the belatedly released 'Original Untitled Ballad' closes the collection with delicate grace. Joined by a dream team including Dolphy, Tyner, Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, Coltrane ascends to new heights. Ole Coltrane is a pivotal milestone, blending accessibility with bold experimentation, marking a crucial chapter in Trane's unparalleled journey.

Review: Billed as a jazz-funk obscurity by many an expert, the 1984 self-released album by John Lamkin charts the trumpeting and flugelhorning talents of a lesser-spotted Maryland jazzer. Never again releasing a record after this debut for GMI, this shockingly varied record was dedicated to Lamkin's father, also named John Lamkin. Commanding a star cast of instrumental contributors - the likes of Gary Thomas, George Gray and Eugene Mauro - Lamkin would not achieve so much fame as those listed above, and yet brought a timelessly torrid fusion of funk and jazz here. 'Hot' is especially crispy and combustible, and we're not sure why it didn't blow up when it came out; you could fry an egg on that bass lick.

List Of Demands
Cat: LPIARC 0092. Rel: 31 Jan 25
Review: Damon Locks, the Chicago-based musician and educator, delivers a powerful and thought-provoking album that explores themes of Black liberation and cultural identity. 'List of Demands' is a sonic tapestry woven from spoken word, archival samples and intricate rhythms, a testament to Locks's deep understanding of music, poetry and social commentary. The album's title, inspired by Locks's work with incarcerated artists, reflects its central theme: a call for recognition, justice, and empowerment. Tracks like 'Reversed' and 'Distance' set the stage with their hypnotic rhythms and evocative soundscapes, while 'Holding the Dawn in Place' and 'Everything's Under Control' offer moments of introspection and reflection. Locks's vocals, often processed and layered, create a mesmerising tapestry of sound, his words weaving a narrative of resilience and hope. A powerful and timely work.

Review: Green Cosmos' latest release immerses listeners in a world where jazz meets the pulse of global rhythms. 'Uber dem Berg' and 'Kalimba Suite, Part 1' stand out, each track a delicate weave of complex rhythms and expressive melodies that demand both attention and surrender. There's a subtle power in how they blend African percussion with the band's own improvisational styleinothing flashy, but deeply evocative. The musicians seem to exist in a space where time slows, each note chosen not to impress, but to breathe. The four page booklet offers an insightful glimpse into their creative process, revealing an intimacy in their work that makes this LP not just a collection of songs, but an invitation to listen closer.

Review: The Last Poets, pioneers of revolutionary spoken word and proto-rap, return with a powerful new album that blends their fiery lyricism with the infectious rhythms of Afrobeat. 'Africanism' sees the legendary duo, Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan, collaborating with a stellar cast of musicians, including the late Tony Allen, Prince Fatty, and members of Seun Kuti's Egypt 80. The result is a potent and timely exploration of social and political issues, delivered with the same raw energy and uncompromising spirit that has defined The Last Poets' music for over five decades. Abiodun revisits classics like 'When The Revolution Comes' and 'Gash Man', their messages of social justice and self-empowerment still burning bright. Umar's 'Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution' and 'Just Because' remain as potent and provocative as ever, their unflinching commentary on race and inequality cutting through the noise of contemporary discourse. The album's musical landscape is equally captivating, with Tony Allen's polyrhythmic drumming providing a driving force, complemented by the soulful melodies and intricate arrangements of the contributing musicians. A powerful reminder of the transformative power of music and spoken word.

Review: Pacific Express were an South African funk/jazz outfit with vibes of Stevie Wonder or Earth, Wind & Fire's music of the day and, originally released in 1979, this reissue showcases the band's pivotal role in shaping Cape Town jazz. Their blend of soul, funk, disco and r&b creates a seamless, groovy atmosphere, with the band's tight rhythm section and smooth instrumentation very much at the forefront. Tracks like 'Come True' highlight the excellent vocal performances and musicianship, with lush piano and string arrangements adding a lounge-like vibe. The standout ballad 'What Is The Answer' is emotionally charged, showcasing the band's depth. 'What I Feel' offers a catchy, upbeat groove, perfectly encapsulating the album's blend of relaxed yet funky vibes. Somewhat incredibly, this the album's first reissue, so our advice would be to jump on it.
