Pass Da Mic

Hip Hop/R&B
Da Youngstas - "Pass The Mic" (4:03)
Lou Donaldson - "Pot Belly" (4:01)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks is back with more of that red hot dancefloor heat in hip-hop form with another couple of gems. The one kick off with Da Youngstas and the second single from their debut album in 1992. 'Pass The Mic' rides on crisp boom bap drums with big horns and some mad speedy mic work. On the flip, as is always with way with this series, is the sample source - namely Lou Donaldson's 'Pot Belly' from his 1970 album Pretty Things. It's a nice smooth jazz number with Rhodes chords warming it through and gently tumbling rhythms from Idris Muhammad on drums.

Bronx Tale

Hip Hop/R&B
Fat Joe - "Bronx Tale" (feat KRS One) (3:53)
Sammy Nestico - "Shoreline Drive" (3:26)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks always serves up the working DJ with the sort of vital tools they need to get beat loving floors jacked up and moving. Here a load more iconic of the ages are chawed up and spat out on a new two track 7 " that features none other than legendary MC KRS One as well as American champ Fat Joe and Sammy Nestico. 'Bronx Tale' goes first with a nice laid back beat, funky bass and some edgy breaks that build a vibe while the KRS One rhymes come hard. Flip it over for 'Shoreline Drive' which is a soul led tune with soaring wind sounds, big cinematic drama and a hint of 60s style.

The High & Mighty - "Dirty Decibels" (3:57)
Simon Haseley - "Hammerhead" (4:33)
Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.

Road To The Riches

Hip Hop/R&B
Kool G Gap & DJ Polo - "Road To The Riches" (4:42)
Billy Joel - "Stiletto" (4:38)
Review: The 5 Boroughs label never misses and here comes another sure shot of rare and classic hip hop and soul on tasty 45rpm vinyl. This time out, 'Road to the Riches' by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo is in the headlights. It's a tune that sampled Billy Joel's 'Stiletto' and layers up woody beats, big piano energies and slick vocals with some of the stylish scratching that defined this era. O the flip side is the original sample source played out in full - a soul offering with wandering piano work and prickly drums that has plenty of swing to it.

Hip Hop/R&B
Mad Skillz - "The Nod Factor" (3:52)
Johnny Guitar Watson - "Superman Lover" (3:43)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks continues to focus on red hot hip hop classics that have come from the famous New York boroughs over the years. This latest mad limited 7" is another tidy one that goes all the way back to 1996 for 'The Nod Factor' from Skillz's From Where??? album. It's smooth and seductive, self congratulatory and sure to get floors bumping. On the reverse is a more soul drenched slow jam that gets you in the mood thanks to the buttery vocals of American blue sand funk musician "Johnny Guitar" Watson. This is a must cop.

Funky For You

Hip Hop/R&B
Nice & Smooth - "Funky For You" (3:57)
Parliament - "Do That Stuff" (3:42)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks delve into the history of hip hop and dig out another gem from the golden era, this time from The Bronx outfit Nice & Smooth, while the flip side serves up the original source of the main sample from their tune "Funky For You." It's from Parliament's "Do That Stuff" and it features plenty of flabby bass lines, sliding snares and vocal harmonies that will warm any soul. Nice & Smooth rework it into a more hip hop framework with great lyrical flow and a little more rawness and edge to the beats.

Time's Up

Hip Hop/R&B
OC - "Time's Up" (3:26)
Les Demerle - "A Day In The Life" (4:25)
Review: You can always rely on 5 Borough Breaks for some top shelf hip hop. The label's latest missive is a legendary one from O.C. - "Time's Up" is a rousing, hard hitting beat with an even tougher verse that rides on the booming kicks. It also samples Les DeMerle's "A Day In The Life" which just so happens to be pressed on the flip and yes, it is in fact a cover of The Beatles. Here though, it becomes a stirring big bang jazz cut that forms an impressive wall of retro sound that will inject realness and rawness into any party. Like always with this label, quantities are limited so move fast to get your fix.

It's Been A Long Time
Cat: 5BB 032. Rel: 20 Feb 24

Hip Hop/R&B
Rakim - "It's Been A Long Time" (4:00)
Cecil Holmes - "Call Me, Come Back Home" (3:23)
Review: More gold from the always in the know and on point 5 Boroughs label. Again here it digs into the vast annals of hip-hop history to come up with some still relevant gems in the form of Rakim and DJ Premier's staple 'It's Been a Long Time.' It is a classic boom-bap joint with lush strings and horns, some old-school scratching and cool bars. As walls, the label serves it up alongside the original sample source on the flip which is Cecil Holmes's languid soul slow burner 'Call Me, Come Back Home'. These plays shift in quick time so do not snooze if you want a slice.

Smut Peddlers - "One By One" (feat Cage & Mr Eon) (3:55)
Lyn Christopher - "Take Me With You" (3:06)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks is a firm favourite with old-school hip-hop heads. The label has another hot one on its books here with a boom bap classic from Smut Peddler in the shape of 'One By One' feat Cage & Mr Eon. It's moody, low slung and menacing and a real backpacker staple that has smooth flowing bars over lazy but locked in beats. On the flip is Lyn Christopher's super rare 'Take Me With You', a raw soul cut with the bass riffs that are sampled so well on the A-side lending it darkened vibe. Two stone cold killers.

Zulu War Chant

Hip Hop/R&B
Timezone - "Zulu War Chant" (4:10)
Betty Wright - "Clean Up Woman" (2:46)
Review: The 5 Borough Breaks series has long been a good way of acquiring killer cuts that have some way played a part in the ongoing evolution of hip-hop culture in New York City. The hush-hush label's latest release boasts the full version of Betty Wright's head-nodding soul classic "Clean Up Woman", which boasts a breakbeat that has been sampled on scores of killer rap jams. On the A-side you'll find something a little less well-known: "Zulu War Chant", a 1992 cut by the Afrika Bambaataa and Rusty Egan-helmed Time Zone crew. It samples the familiar groove from "Clean Up Woman", adding a swathe of well known rapped and sung vocal samples and a hard-spun hip-hop beat.

The Troubleneck Brothers - "Back To The Hip Hop" (4:13)
Les McCann - "North Carolina" (3:25)
Review: Party people in the place to be! Another precision trip into the history books as 5BB take us back to one of the most important neighbourhoods in hip-hop history. This time we head to Harlem and Uptown courtesy of the heavily influential Troubleneck Brothers crew and their '94 nostalgia shock "Back To The Hip-Hop". Still smooth, still reminiscent of the finest foundations, still flowing like water. Meanwhile the B side flexes the drum inspiration with a crisp version of Les McCann's "North Carolina". The party has already started, and now it's about to end.

I'm Not Playing : Five Borough Breaks Vol 11
Cat: 5BB 011. Rel: 18 Jul 17

Hip Hop/R&B
Ultimate Force - "I'm Not Playing" (3:54)
Albert King - "Cold Feet" (2:47)
Review: Another killer issue from the 5 Borough Breaks crew, unearthing yet another classic hip hop anthem rarely seen on 45. Taking it back to 1989, Ultimate Force's "I'm Not Playing" catches a young Diamond D in full flow over a looped blues lick. Famed for its appearance on Shadow & Cut Chemist's "Brainfreeze" mix, the original 45 will set you back a hefty sum. As always, flip it over for the original sample source - step up Blues master Albert King's "Cold Feet".
