Creak (5:30)
Croak (5:37)
Crank (5:37)
Crease (6:00)
Review: We've not been able to get to the bottom of who Kenny Burns is (or at least this one - there was a famous Nottingham Forest footballer of the same name in the dim and distant past), and 89: Ghost main man Neil Tolliday is keeping tight-lipped. Either way, this label debut from the man of mystery includes some genuinely impressive moments. Picturesque closer 'Crease', where dreamy chords and kaleidoscopic synth sounds rise and fall atop an unfussy dancefloor beat, reminded us of Nail's own 1993 cut 'Cassiopeia', while 'Crank' is a thrusting slab of early morning techno peppered with squelchy acid motifs, chiming electronics and loopy, mind-mangling riffs. Elsewhere, 'Croak' is an angular slab of warped techno intensity, and opener 'Creak' is a hypnotic neo-trance number.

Rush (6:40)
Get Up (6:42)
Night River (5:29)
Things I Said (7:23)
Review: Having dropped some choice digi-only releases on Robsoul and Cross Section, rising British producer Jade Cox makes her first appearance on wax via Nail's 89:Ghost label, and she's making quite the statement of intent with these no-nonsense club workouts. There's a loopy, tracky feel to "Rush" that perfectly captures the energy of a killer peak time set, while "Get Up" takes a looser, funkier approach that should sit comfortably in all manner of warm up scenarios. "Night River" is a chugging, upbeat and soulful jam indebted to the unmistakable warmth of Detroit house, and "Things I Said" brings things full circle with a stripped back, percussive groover for DJs to get fresh with.

Review: First volume of house tracks picked from the Velocet catalogue, Nail's previous label, which he ran very badly between 1995 and 1997. Most of the unsold, OG copies now lay in his ex-wife's cellar, covered in mushrooms.

Ariel (6:22)
S.C.A.M.P (4:02)
Z-Plane (7:33)
Ultranet (4:55)
Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues apace with this new wedge of goodness from Logic Systems. The self-titled EP is the first we've heard of this particular producer, although it could just as easily be an alias for the boss himself. Whoever is behind the music, they should be thoroughly pleased with themselves. The quality and imagination that has been poured into these tracks is evident from the off - "Ariel" shimmers with its plush layers of synths and understated beat, while "S.C.A.M.P" gets some even more startling keys in the mix. The story is the same across the flipside, weaving a masterful tale that adds perfectly to the 89:Ghost canon.

Review: 4 unreleased cuts by Nail, echoing perhaps the more jacked-up moments of his ""Big D's Lounge"" lp that was released on DiY that same year. Speaking from his tent pitched outside the Oswestry service station goods entrance, he recalled; ""I have no memory of making these tracks"".

Happen Dub (6:06)
Ese Dub (5:47)
Feets Dub (6:08)
Be Dub 2 (4:01)
Review: The unstoppable house machine Nail is back once more on his 89:Ghost label with a grip of killer drops previously only available online. His advice is to "spark up a zug and chew on these meaty badboys", and we'd be inclined to agree. There's a heady, trippy quality to "Happen Dub" that suits all heavy lidded situations, while "Ese Dub" channels a few rugged bleep traits that hark back Nail's roots in DIY Discs and the free party scene. "Feets Dub" channels some sublime funk sampling that would sound right at home amongst the Detroit house grandmasters, and "Be Dub 2" takes things interstellar with some swirling, churning dub techno chords of the highest calibre.

Review: Going by many names but primarily known as Nail, Neil Tolliday has been on searing form since getting back into the deep house game after a much celebrated run of releases back in the 90s. His 89:Ghost label is providing much of the new wave of material, and on this particular 12" he revives his The NG9 Project alias after a single on Robsoul in 2013. There's an irresistible micro house shuffle embedded into these tracks, with Nail's deft melodic touch scattered across the top to make for another essential, workable collection of jams for a more discerning crowd.

Review: 89:GHOST's head gonk NAIL gets a call from Positive Divide about remixing a track the latter did with legendary house vocalist Robert Owens. After short negotiations an agreement is made, braised tofu is delivered to a secret address and soon after 2 mixes appear in Positive Divide's inbox. Included here are both NAIL's efforts, plus a remix by PD him/themselves. Previously available only as a download, 89:GHOST now supplies the physical.. 300 copies in red vinyl ONLY, no-re-press or digital.

Minimal/Tech House
Pacificist
Throat
Plink
Settle
Review: Todd Sines has been on an incredibly productive roll of late, and now he's been invited to lay down some of his incendiary machine jams for Nail's 89:Ghost label. The Internal Dialogue EP kicks off with the creepy, metallic tones of "Pacifist", matching Sines' trademark jerking grooves with almost industrial textures. "Throat" takes things in an equally curious direction, pinging deep house dynamics into a weird zone where discord and sound processing subtly infect the blueprint with stunning results. "Plink" is remarkably upfront in comparison, not least thanks to the huge monosynth lead blurting out at the front of the mix. "Settle" finishes the record off with a brilliantly crooked deconstruction built around off-kilter drum hits and wonky key stabs that could only come from Sines' distinctive sound palette.

DBSDUB2 (6:45)
BAQDUB (6:19)
HOTARU (7:04)
BAUCH3 (6:29)
Review: Nail is back on 89:Ghost with more of his sublime trippers delights as Smoke. This is the UK tech house don at his deepest, eking out a perfectly fluid strain of dub-inflected grooves to take you further in and farther out. Lead track 'DBSDUB2' is awash with gorgeous chords and strung out soul licks, all underpinned by a simply perfect groove. 'BAQDUB' uses a more broken thread of percussion to accentuate the rhythm, while 'HOTARU' keeps things more tightly clipped without losing that shimmering veneer. 'BAUCH3' is the more ambient of the cuts on this 12", taking the aesthetics of the other three and jettisoning off into pure dubbed out bliss.

Stars In The Morning
Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues to march ahead with further musings on the mysterious creative realm between deep house and techno, which is a natural home for Tomoki Tamura. The Holic Trax boss man steps up with the solid four track Quiet Air Gun EP, and from the get go the quality is unmistakable. "Quiet Air Gun" is an alluring yet undeniably strange jam, with vocals from Moo only adding to the eerie, sensual tension. "Foggy Jungle" is more upfront with its tough beats n' bass exoskeleton, but between that scuffed combo there's ample room for subtle atmospheric touches as well. "DSC House" then brings the real peak time heat with its smoking samples and heavyweight rhythm section, but there's time for one more trip out with the sublime "Stars In The Morning".

Review: Neil 'Nail' Tolliday's 89:Ghost label continues to deliver the goods, this time reaching out to Scandinavia and the considerable talents of Vesa-Matti Kivioja. The Finnish producer has been producing high-end electronic music for many years, not least in the ambient field, but here he's mining a particularly inventive style of dub techno that draws parallels with the mighty Porter Ricks in terms of sound design. Across all four tracks the drums act as a subtle counterpoint to dense thickets of texture and tone writhing with organic intent around the groove. As dancefloor friendly as it is brain-teasing, this is a seriously classy slice of dub techno immersion.

All That Matters
Things At Night
Tlk 2 Me Wt Yr Bdy
Likely Story
Review: 89:Ghost is on fire at present, having thrown down killer releases from Todd Sines, Logic System and Tomoki Tamura over the past year. Tommy Vicari Jr is a great addition to the roster, bringing a freaky, wobbly and distinctly hi tech approach on "All That Matters" that will have party people freaking out in a whole new way. "Things At Night" takes a completely different approach with its focus on delicately chopped up piano hooks. "Tlk 2 Me Wt Yr Bdy" flips the script yet again with a roughneck, 'ardcore sound palette and some filtered house elements riding atop a booming low end. "Likely Story" finishes this varied EP off with a cheeky garage house strut that will have just as many fans as the other killer jams on this well rounded record.
