Review: The Black Crowes go into the vault for "The Lost Crowes". This 2-Disc collection contains sessions for two unreleased albums: "Tall" & "Band". Formed in Georgia in the mid-80s by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, the Black Crowes came of age in LA and shot to stardom with their 1990 debut "Shake Your Money Maker". Their second album, "The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion" followed in 1992. Following that, the band entered the studio to make what was to be the album "Tall", but the electrifying tracks cut during those sessions have been unreleased until now. This historic new 2xCD set also includes the band's sessions, recorded in 1997 when the Crowes convened to track a loose and organic set of rock gems spotlighting their range and maturity. Together, these previously unissued works fill in long-missing gaps in the Crowes' creative journey. All the tracks have been remixed and remastered for maximum sonics. On disc 1, The band sessions features ten songs tracked in 1997 at Atlanta's Purple Dragon Recording Studio and Ocean Way Recording, Nashville. Recorded just after the "Three Snakes & One Charm" tour, the roots-flavoured band sessions captures the Crowes at their fluid, limber best. Highlights include "Paint An Eight," "Wyoming And Me," and "Never Forget This Song." Disc 2 is about "The Tall Sessions" features sixteen tracks recorded in late '93 and early '94 at Conway Studios in Los Angeles. Recorded as the young band was gearing up for their classic album "Amorica", "The Tall Sessions" present the band's raucous rock and roll energy in peak form. Songs featured are culled from over thirty tracks from the original sessions, with highlights including "A Conspiracy," "Descending,", "Thunderstorm 654," "Evil Eye," and more.

Review: For new rockists keen to be clued in, this fresh reissue of the first ever LP by Danzig should make for a good start. Formed in 1987 as the eponymous brainchild of infamous rockstar Glenn Danzig, the heavy metal band quickly picked up steam for their unique command of atmosphere and doomy themes, as well as other, more controversial motifs. On Danzig, one can make out the earliest vestiges of industrial metal, the very same sound which would pave the way for Nine Inch Nails' success; though make no mistake, this is a project with its spirit firmly rooted in the heavy metal sound of New Jersey, notwithstanding its production tricks. The likes of 'Cantspeak' and 'Sadistikal' are variously hateful paeans to the hellish netherworlds below, and once you realise that this was a huge proliferation point for satanic and occult imagery in metal, it's clear a deeply sinister aura envelops this album.

Review: Tom Petty will release 'Highway Companion', his debut for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label and third solo release, on July 24th. The eleven-track album is Tom Petty's first since 2002's 'The Last DJ' and was produced by Jeff Lynne, Petty's long-term collaborator and former Traveling Wilburys bandmate. Petty contributes vocals, guitar, drum, harmonica, electric piano, bass and keyboards to 'Highway Companion' whilst Lynne adds bass, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals and Autoharp. The Heartbreaker's Mike Campbell, who has also worked with Johnny Cash and Jackson Browne, is the final musician to feature on the album with guitar and vibraphone contributions. "It's just a really nice collection of songs", said Petty. "I think it has an underlying theme of time and what it does to you". Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are touring the U.S. from June through to August with Pearl Jam, The Allman Brothers and Phish's Trey Anastasio amongst the various supports on the tour.

Originally released in 2006, Christ Illusion would serve as follow up to 2001's critically acclaimed God Hates Us All, while marking the band's first full-length with original drummer Dave Lombardo since 1990's Seasons In The Abyss. Somewhat shrugged off upon initial unveiling, in the near two decades since the project has amassed a legion of followers, mainly due to the work ultimately serving as one final effort from the original line up before guitarist Jeff Hanneman's untimely passing, followed by Lombardo's second departure.
