Sfarot EP (12")
Cat: ATN 034. Rel: 15 Mar 17

Techno
Sfarot (7:13)
Sfarot (dub) (8:14)
Harabait (6:22)
Review: This 12" marks the debut of Alek Lee, a previously unheralded producer from Tel Aviv. Happily, Sfarot is a hugely confident and beautifully produced first outing, full of tracks that gleefully defy easy categorization. Take the title track, for example; while its borderline foreboding electronics and bleeping notes scream techno, its tempo and low-slung groove are closer to dub disco. Then there's the choir of what appear to be Japanese children singing over the top. It's a curious combination of elements, but really rather good. The flipside Dub, which replaces the electronics with traditional middle-eastern instrumentation and emphasizes the dub-influenced bottom end, is also superb, while "Harabait" wraps haunting, delay-laden trumpet lines around a similarly shuffling dub disco groove.

I Gotta Wear Shades
Lunar Substance
Review: It's now safe to say Geena is a staple of French label Antinote, and not that his first two records were anything short of this third release, but Nicolas Molina has really hit the spot this time. It's a deep house EP that's true to the genre which rids itself of a cheap French house tag while still combining the genre's typical elements. The best example of Geena's fresh approach is heard in the muscle-tough drums of "I Gotta Wear Shades" that underpin hazy, dubbed-out atmospheres and de-tuned synths. "Lunar Substance" is a cool and melancholic in a Giegling kind of way while "Gamma Sector" is melodious, acid-tinged and feel-good. And if you like Levon Vincent's music head straight to "Niagara Galleries".

Natural High (3:13)
KG Voice (5:55)
La Isla (1:36)
Keep (5:06)
Blue Transfer (6:40)
Review: Geena is Frenchman Nicolas Molina, who appears for Parisian purveyors of obscure and exotic oddball grooves Antinote for his fifth album. The album will appeal to fans of retro flavoured balearic house made popular at the moment by the likes of Black Spuma, Tuff City Kids or stuff on Paramida's Love On The Rocks imprint. The '80s pan-pipe preset on the groovy "KG Voice" is a great example, or the funk, Amazonian acid house vibes of "Blue Transfer" more particularly; think 808 State. "Keep" goes for some thumping early' 90s UK techno vibes but lush ambient passages like "Natural High" and "La Isla" balance out the EP nicely.

Review: Parisian label Antinote returns to the dusty early 90s archives of Iueke for their fourth release. Founded little over a year ago, the Antinote Recordings story began in auspicious circumstances with the Tapes EP, a release of mind-bendingly ahead of its time proto-techno from label co-founder Gwenael Jamois under his Iueke alias. Its three tracks were originally recorded by Jamois in the early 90s whilst employed as an engineer in a Brixton based recording studio, and were clearly just the tip of the iceberg, with this fourth release culled from the same period of Jamois' life. Just one long form 22 minute take of proto-Actress style techno is present here as closely-knit drums, overdriven bass melodies and jangly computer percussion remain engaging throughout its lengthy arrangement. Magnifique.

Filippo (4:33)
Francesco (5:11)
Leonardo (5:04)
Marco (5:35)
Review: One last call of business before a well-earned summer break sees Antinote introduce Leonardo Martelli who's Menti Singole 12" again proves what a vital and interesting label the Paris concern has become under the tutelage of Quentin Vandewalle. Leonardo Martelli is a relative newcomer from Foligno in Italy, with just one prior cassette behind him, which appeared on Drvg Cvltvre's New York Haunted label. There is a distinct electro flavour hovering over Martelli's Antinote debut, placing it in stark contrast to the breezy pop of the Domenique Dumont release or Paki & Visnadi's poised ambience. Of course there is still plenty of room for the kind of leftfield meandering that Antinote has made its name on, but with a more forthright club purpose beating at its heart.

Boiler Broom
Interlude 1
Interlude 2
Review: Lately, Quentin Vandewalle's Antinote label has swung between fiendishly out-there synth-wave and the rugged, retro-futurist revivalist gear of house eccentric Geena. Curiously, this label debut from the little-known producer Panoptique touches on both sounds. Title track "Boiler Broom" (we chuckled, at least) is dark and exotic, with bubbling acid lines and held-note chords reclining seductively over a hissing drum machine groove. It's robust and forthright, but there's a subtlety to the composition and production that makes it particularly engaging. Flip to the B and you'll find two downtempo compositions; the Boards of Canada-ish warmth of "Interlude 1" and the gently rhythmic, horror-influenced swirl of "Interlude 2".

Reigi (6:23)
Haipa (6:11)
Review: More captivating oddities from Paris' ever surprising Antinote camp, following up Sign Libra and D.K's shimmering new-age soundscapes. We have the Reims based producer Slowglide following up a first release on his own imprint Vapeur, but this is his first EP on vinyl. As even the label themselves have suggested, these evocative tracks bear the hallmarks of classic Sheffield bleep techno and IDM from the early '90's - as heard on the dynamic A side cut "Reigi". On the flip, there's more moody and experimental flavour on "Haipa" with its dense broken beats facing off with analogue blips and blurps, calling to mind the seminal work of early Autechre.

Review: After IUEKE's stormy techno we wanted to head for something more laid back and luminous, something more summerish. Antoine Kogut brings us this perfect three tracker largely inspired by his wide culture of Euro-Jazz, Afro and Proto-Electronics curiosities. Antinote is really glad to add this sentimental UFO to its catalog and to welcome this brilliant and talented artist in the crew. As the first release of the label, it's a matter of groove mixed up with sensitivity, and fragility. Both unclassifiable and really respectful of the good'ol french traditions (from Bernard Estardy to Air), Syracuse is just giving their most sincere joyful vibrations and their love for non-stigmatized music.

Calirough (5:48)
Hyroglyph (9:07)
Wooden Words (6:45)
Monia (8:22)
Review: Hot on the heels of Tolouse Low Trax's first outing on celebrated Parisian label Antinote comes the follow-up Deacdes 2/3. The producer's distinctive musical voice - wayward, dystopian, and fearlessly experimental - seems particularly fitting given recent political events. Opener "Calirough", all sustained horror chords, distorted percussion and ghostly samples, is particularly potent, though the warped, metallic chug of "Hiroglyph" is not far behind. He returns to 4/4 pastures with the post-truth throb of "Wooden Words", before imagining a bleak future on the intense hum of "Monia", a typically dark and crunchy workout that's as chilling as a Donald Trump presidency.

Tazza (5:33)
Review: The vinyl has barely cooled on the second installment of Tolouse Low Trax's Decades series, and the producer has already readied a third and final installment. As with previous volumes, it's a rich and varied affair, with the Salon Des Amateurs resident variously turning his hand to mildly foreboding electronica (the ghostly tribal vocals and hip-hop techno electronic beats of "E-Sadam"), lo-fi electronic dub ("Marina Dub"), krautrock inspired hypnotism ("Boutique Beast"), industrial influenced murkiness ("Metal Tent Wicked"), and Kraftwerk style, proto-techno throb (the standout "Tazza"). In other words, it's business as usual from one of electronic music's most talented producers.

Review: Parisian imprint Antinote has long been an eclectic outlet for left-of-centre dance music and carved out a musical lane truly of its own. It celebrates its 10 year anniversary with this well curated compilation featuring new music by the label's graphic designer Nico Motte on the low slung acid boogie of 'All The Money In The World', Domenique Dumount appears with the dubby underground pop of 'La Dolce Vita', local producer Low Jack pursuing his typically relentless sound on the off-kilter 'Feel' and sometime collaborator (and LIES Records chief) Ron Morelli getting those classic Detroit vibes of old in effect on 'Tribute' among many more.
