Deep House
Jock Burton - "Dolmen"
Jock Burton - "Dolmen" (Slowburn remix)
RDMA - "Syeeda"
Route 8 - "Hemitropy"
Review: Vinyl-only imprint Appian Sounds - jointly run from bases in East London and Dublin - is fast becoming a reliable source of extra-special deep house. This latest split EP, featuring tracks from a trio of rising talents, is another must-have release. Newcomer Jock Burton impresses with "Dolmen", a chunk of loose and spacey deep house that wouldn't sound out of place on Mood Hut or M/O/S Deep (check also Slowburn's remix, which adds a bleep style sub bassline and tools up the percussion). RDMA's "Syeeda" is ultra-deep and heavily electronic - the kind of track you want to both dance to and immense yourself in while horizontal - while Route 8's "Hemitropy" is a pleasingly dusty trip into yearning, half-remembered deep house

Techno
Cueva Ciega (8:31)
Cranofacial Architecture (7:19)
Calcolithic (7:00)
Valencia Scarcity (7:59)
Review: Even by the Appian Sounds' exceptionally high standards, this outing from Estrato Aurora - a producer whose averaged a sole release a year since making his debut in 2016 - is really rather good. It's impressively varied, too, with the atmospheric deep techno shuffler "Cueva Ciega" being followed on the A-side by the brilliant dub techno/broken techno/deep electro fusion of EP highlight "Cranofacial Architecture". The studied eclecticism continues on the flip, too. "Calcolithic" sees the producer fix breathlessly beautiful synthesizer melodies and glassy-eyed chords to a rolling post-electro rhythm with rush-inducing results, while "Valencia Scarcity" is an acid-flecked chunk of IDM/electro fusion rich in crunchy machine drums, slowly shifting acid lines and dreamy chord sequences.

Techno
Evigt Morker - "Langbro Kyrka"
G-Prod - "Once Upon A Time In A Dub"
Hiver - "Ison" (6:42)
XDB - "Neptu" (8:28)
Review: Appian Sounds' Indelible Expressions series returns with its second and final chapter, this time spear-headed by a totally different collection of artists. The Irish label have featured plenty of exciting talent in the past, including Joey Anderson, Imugem Orihasam, Eduardo De La Calle, so we know that they can throw together an excellent variety of artists to form one hell of an EP. This time we have: Evigt Morker with the supremely dubby and laid-back "Langbro Kyrka", "Once Upon A Time In A Dub" by G-Prod, "ison" by Vidab and Curle members Hiver, and a cracking piece of percussive grit-house by the one and only XDB, always up for it and never shy of a fat groove.

Techno
Trieste (8:07)
Narrow (6:54)
Dream State (6:48)
Haze (6:32)
Review: From Hidden Hawaii to Livity Sound, it's now time for Forest Drive West to land on the Appian district with some duly expected waves of sonic euphoria, merging techno, house and IDM like never before. In fact, the opening sway of "Trieste" is loose and mechanical enough to be considered both electronica and minimal techno, all at once, while "Narrow" performs a logical 4/4 dance with the help of airy atmospherics. On the flip, "Dream State" enters the ether, thanks to cascading pads and an itchy, almost broken percussion, whereas "Haze" pretty much exclusively travels at a subaqueous tone, expanding and contracting its rolling glitches like nothing else.

Newenslo (7:36)
Human Outposts (7:21)
Nom L3 (7:31)
Jangi (7:35)
Review: Georgian producer Gigi Jikia aka HVL is back on Dublin's Appian Sounds with a much deserved release here, which follows up some great releases for his local institution Bassiani, Hypercolour and Tabernacle. The four selections on the Aura Fossil EP are taken from the extended release of the same name, originally released digitally back in 2022.. Whether it's the complex and immersive dreamscape of 'Newenslo' on side A, or B-side journey's such as 'Nom L3' a contorted techno derivative with its falling acid sounds, or with the dystopian subterranean beats of 'Jangi' - some truly singular perspectives on modern IDM sounds are on offer here. Tip!

Deep House
Life Recorder - "Meditation"
Life Recorder - "Cycles"
Miltiades - "S48SN"
Natan H - "Giving"
Review: A sixth release from Appian Sounds finds the London based label (with roots in Dublin) continue it's focus on the split artist offerings with the Ervallagh EP featuring contributions from Miltiades, Life Recorder and label regular Natan H. Echovolt boss Ilias Pitsios has gone on record to call Miltiades "probably the best producer from Greece as far as deep house / techno stuff is concerned" and the evidence so far for Nous and Echovolt has backed that up. Here Miltiades offers a further reason to think that with the sublimely deep and rhythmically playful "S48SN" and it's well balanced out by two raw jams from French producer Life Recorder and the sweeping analogue vista of "Giving" by Natan H.

Deep House
Natan H - "VX407"
Leonid - "Starling Dance"
Joey Anderson - "Dormency"
DJ Spider - "Anticipate The Wolves"
Review: Although only a little over a year old, the Appian Sounds label has already featured a killer selection of artists across its four records so far, with the likes of Eduardo De La Calle and Ethyl & Flori appearing thus far. This latest various artists 12" is perhaps the label's most impressive to date, with the fluid deep house sound of Natan H's "VX407" and deep, underwater acid of Leonid's "Starling Dance" both offering some of the label's most accomplished productions to date. The flipside sees a pair of underground legends join the Appian Sounds fray, as New Jersey's Joey Anderson contributes "Dormancy", which takes things into expectedly hypnotic territory thanks to its silky rhythm and effervescent synths, while New York's DJ Spider provides "Anticipate The Wolves", an enjoyably clunky piece of techno filled with ominously swelling sonics.

Along The Gleaming (feat Taro) (7:36)
Along The Gleaming (feat Taro - reprise) (3:25)
Superoperator (8:24)
Requies (6:53)
Review: Naturally, o.utlier is a maverick and a little bit of enigma, but we wouldn't expect anything less from an artist with such a name. Shady is good in our books, it keeps us guessing in a world dominated by information overload. We've seen him appear on Fred P's Soul People Music but, that was over two years ago, and we're glad to see his resurrection on the fast-growing Appian Sounds label out of east London. "Along The Gleaming", the lead track, is a misty, shape-shifting techno affair with a gloriously deep and ethereal framework that places it in the deeper end of the category alongside the likes of Donato Dozzy. The tune features Taro, who comes in for a 'reprise mix' that scraps the beats and leaves us with a gentle, beatless sway of airy harmonics. The B-side restores the meditative techno business with the impressive "Superoperator", a coiled groove of pseudo techno, followed by echoing beat pulses of "Requies", a fresh and compelling framework that uses its few elements to create maximum impact. A tipped and recommended 12" - but, don't sleep, these'll be gone soon!

Techno
Outlier - "Adrift" (8:02)
Bas Dobblelaer - "Coincidence" (6:05)
Tarik Hensen - "Dimma Lyset" (6:44)
Kloor - "Snowcone" (7:00)
Review: Having broken their run of multi-artist EPs earlier this year via a fine debut album from Lost Epcot, Appian Sounds reverts to type with another compilation style 12" featuring four formidable cuts. Outlier sets the tone via the off-kilter audio haziness of "Adrift", an atmospheric ambient cut full of gentle melodies, distant jazz drums and field recordings, while Bas Dobblelaer delivers the melancholic, emotion-rich shuffle of "Coincidence", which sits somewhere between hypnotic minimal techno and early 90s IDM. On the flip Tarik Hensen ups the tempo and intensity on the locked-in deep space techno hypnotism of "Dimma Lyset", before Kloor offers up a slightly bouncier and even more intergalactic interpretation of rolling techno bliss.
