Sweet Nothing EP (hand-stamped 12" + sticker)
Cat: ARTLESS 2178. Rel: 28 Aug 19
Techno
  1. The Venue (7:51)
  2. Sweet Nothing (7:27)
  3. Cedar Wood (6:19)
  4. Canet 2 (8:12)
Review: Following up some great ones by Mark Archer, Waveguide a.k.a Stereociti and newcomer Vivian Koch, Scottish hi-tech soul engineer Stephen Brown makes a welcome appearance on Berlin imprint a.r.t.less with his idiosyncratic brand of emotive techno. You really can't fault anything by this stalwart of the scene and the Sweet Nothing EP is no exception: from the Detroit style bounce of "The Venue", to the title track which could match anything John Beltran has done in the art of glassy eyed and bittersweet epics. On the flip, we particularly enjoyed the cavernous and glacial chill of dub techno excursion "Cedar Wood".

  1. Track 1 (8:15)
  2. Track 2 (11:13)
Review: The release of any new Gerard Hanson record is a cause for celebration, but we have to admit to being doubly excited about this one. It marks the long-serving producer's first solo Convextion release since 2016 and contains two killer cuts. The un-titled A-side is particularly impressive, with Hanson wrapping immersive, delay-laden electronics and sumptuous deep space chords around a bustling, dub-fired Motor City techno groove. Even by his standards, it's superb. Over on side B, he's back in atmospheric deep techno mode, offering up a poignant and melancholic affair that's as deep, spacey and emotional as anything he's ever done before. Given his track record, that's some accolade.

Review: Artless Records serves us a brilliant two tracker from this up and coming producer, Marko Furstenberg. Mr Furstenberg shows us with this track his massive Berlin/chain reaction influence. Dubby, deep chording at its best!

  4. Distance
  5. Surkit (1991 I-102 version)
  6. Serene
Review: As with the Surkit Chamber reissue by A.r.t.l.e.s.s, this collection of tracks from unsung hero Martin Bonds is jaw-dropping purely for the age of the music against how advanced it sounds. Detroit radiates out of every ounce of this original techno, whether in subtle rhythms as on "Sundog", or in blindingly bright layers of futuristic melody as on "Vessels In Distress". Even if you sometimes find really early Detroit techno production to lacking some punch, this and any other Reel By Real material will put paid to that. Just try denying the awesome power of the bassline on "Serene". Highly recommended.

Detroit Red EP (1-sided 12")
Cat: ARTLESS 2202. Rel: 20 Dec 07
Techno
  1. Beyond The Means
  2. Exhibition
Review: This time the Mojuba sublabel brings us the second part of the 'Detroit' series by the label owner Don Williams himself. This one-sided
record features two fine examples of music inspired by the city of D. The first one is a pumping, peak-time cut to hit the dancefloors with
and might become an essential tool for the ambitious DJ. The second track convinces in its very own character, providing a feeling that
many will recognize from the early years of techno, when this music was connected to the listener in a more deep and emotional way.
