Review: It was Dave Godin including this lush bit of aching Louisiana deep soul on the first Deep Soul Treasures CD that renewed interest in it. Now, original copies are pricey and hard to find and last year a nice cover version was served up by Lady Blackbird. The good folk at Beat Goes Public aka BGP have decide to reissue the original. It's an impossible to ignore track laden with heartbreak. On the flip side is another bluesy soul gem in the form of 'Hummin' A Sad Song.'

Review: The Blue Flames' self-titled EP comes on 7" and follows up the well-received A Snapshot In Time CD compilation from last year. The group's singles are archetypal 50s and 60s soundtracks and have become highly in demand and collectible. Their proto-mod sound is truly distinctive and shines though her with tunes that have never before been available on vinyl. They are instrumentals as the lead singer had been told it was best for him to not sing outside of live shows. They come recorded in mono, like much music of the time, and with liner notes from Dean Rudland and all sound fantastic.

Review: A whole host of crucial funk reissues are landing right now courtesy of the good folks at BGP and up there with the nest of them is this one from Chester Randle's Soul Senders, an ensemble featuring a rotating vests of musicians from America that were active in the 60s onwards. Their 'Soul Brother's Testify' came in two parts, both of which take up one side each of this 7", and were mainstays of the deep funk movement that rose up around the late 90s and early 2000s. They still do a job now with their hard hitting breaks and funky ass riffs.

Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Here we get a couple of them with 'Dance Girl' - the last tune they released in 1974 before signing to Event/Spring. It was a real classic at block parties back in the day and on the flip is a tune that will cost you over L1000 if you can find an original, namely 'Keep On Brother Keep On' - the group's second single on Curtis BC Projects II label.

Review: 'Mod Classics 1964-1966' from BGP is the first compilation of Georgie Fame's Columbia recordings since 1979's 'Beat Classics' and is designed to complement that seminal work. While that went for the hits and the singles, 'Mod Classics' goes for the dancefloor appeal of 24 tracks that mix jazz, rhythm and blues and soul. Review: 51 years have now passed since Funkadelic dropped their first two albums, Funkadelic and Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow. The latter album's numerous highlights included 'Funky Dollar Bill', a flash-fried funk-rock masterpiece that's as bonkers as it is low-slung and floor friendly. This anniversary edition of the song, which was released as part of a double A-side single in 1971, combines the pioneering Detroit crew's original vocal version (side A), with a never-before-heard instrumental take from the original recording sessions (B). This is particularly revelatory, as it offers a chance to hear everything that was going on below George Clinton's singing - and trust us, that's a lot! It's genuinely refreshing to hear an alternate take on a such a fantastic funk-rock gem, so we'd recommend giving it a listen.

Review: 'Foolish Man Part 1' and 'Part 2' by The Huck Daniels Co is one of several 45rpms the BGP label is dropping at the moment and weirdly many of them are also in two parts. This one features guitarist Daniels who was a key part of the B.B. King band ahead of later setting in Los Angeles and becoming a respected leader in his own right. He wrote just one for Kent Records and that was in 1973 as the label headed into its final days. 'Part 1' on the A-side is a driving funk cut aimed squarely at the club and heavy on inspiration from James Brown and the version on the flip levels up with organ playing from Earl Foster.

Review: Americans Hank Jacobs and Don Malone cooked up a bona fide political soul anthem when they crafted 'The World Needs Changin' back in 1970. It is now hard to find so naturally these days it fetches a very handsome fee on second hand markets so has rightly been reissued here by BGP. The a-side is a tune that cuts deep, with pained vocals over a simple but devastating soul rhythm. On the flip is another gem in the form of 'Getting On Down' making this a crucial cut.

Review: Lonnie Liston Smith's legacy in the world of spiritual jazz, soul and funk is huge, but he remains an often overlooked figure only discovered by those with a dedication to the music. As such, his albums are always worthy of reissue to hopefully reach more ears in need of the gifts they possess, and while Expansions is rightly considered his landmark offering, this swift follow up with The Cosmic Echoes is just as essential. Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Review: Freddie McCoy's 'Spider Man' single dates back originally to 1965 when it appears as the tittle track on his album on Prestige. The cool jazz maestro and visionary American soul jazz vibraphonist had already put two albums at that point but Spider Man is his most revered. This lead tune is a beguiling and shuffling Latin rhythm with dancing keys and busy percussive layers insisting that you move your ass. On the backside is 'Soul Yogi' which actually sounds something like his take on Northern Soul. It's an uptempo, string-driven head spinner for sure.

Review: Cuban bandleader, composer and rumba magician Ramon Santamaria had a huge influence throughout his 40 year career, notably writing Coltrane's famous "Afro Blue". Here are two of many stand-out cuts from his 1963 album Watermelon Man! While most the album's focus was on his Herbie Hancock cover, it's tracks like these that really gave the album its spirit and unique character; "Yeh Yeh!" is a samba shaking horn-led cut laced with crackling percussion and party cries while "Get The Money" leans back with rhythm and blues sass and a rhythm that's as powerful as Ramon's legacy. Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: Gil-Scott Heron was at the peak of his powers when he recorded Free Will as a follow-up to career highlight Pieces Of A Man. Originally released in 1972, it's steeped in the song craft of its predecessor and charged with the polemic that elevated his work to some of the greatest to ever shine a light on the Black American experience. The likes of 'Speed Kills' show just how tender Scott-Heron could be, while 'Did You Hear What They Said?' Ranks as one of the most heartbreaking tracks he ever committed to tape. 'The King Alfred Plan' and 'No Knock' prefigure rap as the legend's impassioned poetry rides on the rawest of percussion tracks. It's, quite simply, a masterpiece.

Review: Sylvester has too many hits to count, but 'Over And Over' has to be up there. Originally released in 1977, the timeless slice of uptempo disco funk was a mighty meeting of minds - any track penned by Ashford & Simpson is set for iconic status, and with Sylvester up front it's even more of a sure thing. Quite simply eternal. Review: Originally released on Flying Dutchman in 1973, Leon Thomas' Blues and the Soulful Truth is an outstanding slice of soul funk from one of the genre's all time greats. Thomas came to fame working with Pharoah Sanders on 'The Creator Has A Master Plan', but on this album he was in full flight writing his own songs, backed up by Pee Wee Ellis as a conductor and with Bob Thiele as producer. Thomas had an unflinching approach to his message, best heard on incredible cuts like 'Shape Your Mind To Die', but there's tenderness to match the toughness. Just listen to the sweetness of 'China Doll' on this long overdue reissue and take in the full spectrum of the Leon Thomas sound.

Review: When disco started to fade in the late seventies and early '80s, subtle - and not-so subtle - mutations started emerging from New York studios. According to the compilers behind this essential collection, Spring Records and its Posse offshoot were at the forefront of this movement, a movement that effectively paved the way for NYC's later garage and house sounds. While this version of history can be debated, there's no doubting the quality of the boogie, electrofunk, freestyle, proto-house and early US garage cuts included on the collection. It includes a wealth of must-have cuts, with highlights including Fonda Rae's celebratory 'Live It Up', C-Brand's boogie killer 'Wired For Games' and Feel's electrofunk slayer 'Got To Have Your Lovin'.

Review: Spring Records is one of those labels that played a key part in the early formation of hip-hop but doesn't seem to get spoken about too much. It was in 1979 that the label first dropped a hip-hop and rap-style record by The Fatback Band. The next decades saw them drop plenty more tunes but without major success in the mainstream. Now though looking back those tuners tell a story which is what is captured here on Dollar Bill Y'all: Spring Records And The First Decade Of Hip Hop. It's a great look at the now titanic genre's first ten years and features some landmarks by King Tim III, Jimmy Spicer, DJ Hollywood and Ice T amongst others.

It's one in a series of compilations that have been put together to appeal to vinyl lovers and features two sides packed with tunes hand-picked with TLC from Ace and compiled by Dean Rudland, who has also penned the liner notes that one with it. This one sums up the sound of Black American in the 70s with soul and streetwise attitude colouring the funk next to a mix of fatback drums, syncopated bass, rhythmic guitars and explosive vocals.
