Second Best (Is Never Enough)
Second Best (Is Never Enough) (limited translucent blue vinyl 7")
Cat: BRSPEC 02. Rel: 26 Jan 21
Soul
  1. Second Best (Is Never Enough) (A Mike Maurro remix - edit) (5:02)
  2. Second Best (Is Never Enough) (2:53)
Review: Philly Groove and Brookside link once more for another perfect piece of classic soul with high class strings and big, twirly vocals all shining their way into your affections. Side A gets a subtle remix from Mike Maurro that makes it more suited to this DJ friendly 7'' version and the reverse then has the more lengthy original version for the completists out there. Pressed on limited edition blue vinyl, this is a golden soul nugget from The Finishing Touch that will take any get together to the next level or serve as a perfect send-off tune at lights up.

Love Freeze
Cat: BRPD 21. Rel: 20 Feb 19
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. Love Freeze (DJ Spinna Re-Freak) (8:57)
  2. Love Freeze (long version) (5:44)
Review: In its original, hard-to-find "long version" form, First Choice's "Love Freeze" is one of the greatest chunks of soaring Philadelphia Soul/early disco around. It was recorded and released - initially in edited form - in 1975. You can find the elusive "Long Version" on the flipside of this essential reissue, which is headed up by an even more epic "Re-Freak" by the effervescent DJ Spinna. Clearly re-mixed from the original master tapes, his near ten-minute version builds slowly, breaks down in the middle, builds up again and finishes with an impressively dubbed-out conclusion. It actually sounds like the sort of floor-focused late '70s remix with which Tom Moulton made his name. That, of course, is no bad thing.

First Choice Theme (Paul Simpson remixes)
Cat: BRSPEC 04. Rel: 10 Nov 21
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. First Choice Theme (Disco version) (4:57)
  2. First Choice Theme (Bongo Pass version) (4:54)
Review: Those keen on yellow 7" singles will be keen to hear about these two new cuts of spangly disco from Paul Simpson, pulling no punches in his reworking of 70s soul royalty First Choice and their breakout single, 'First Choice Theme'. Hooked up by the unmatched Brookside Records, this release is the happy result of Simpson's longtime job as a top-tier disco producer, him having been the student of legends like Tom Moulton and Vince Montana. Provided with only the crispest of stems, the A side ('Disco Mix') hears Simpson strip the track back to its bare percussive bones, rendering it clearer and temptingly DJ-able. The B ('Radio Mix') relinquishes vocals entirely, providing a keen disco-funk backdrop for any late night breaks bender.

Armed & Extremely Dangerous/Love & Happiness (remixes)
Cat: BRPD 24. Rel: 14 Jul 20
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. Armed & Extremely Dangerous (Ralphi Rosario & Craig J Snider Disco mix) (6:53)
  2. Armed & Extremely Dangerous (Ralphi Rosario & Craig J Snider dub mix) (6:20)
  3. Love & Happiness (A Mike Maurro remix) (10:25)
Review: Pioneering disco outfit First Choice built up a fine arsenal of hits in the 70s and 80s. Amongst them was their epic "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" which now gets two new versions served up by Brookside. Hot Mix 5 and Chicago house legend Ralphi "The Raz" Rosario is the man doing the work and the brings big drums and vocals with some superbly soulful keys next to Craig J Snider. On the flip, the band's most iconic tune "Love & Happiness" gets a rework by Mike Maurro. It is more soulful and warm, laced with big drums and sweeping pads.

Love Is The Message
Cat: BRPD 26. Rel: 11 Jan 22
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. MFSB - "Love Is The Message" (feat The Three Degrees - Mike Maurro remix) (11:07)
  2. The O'Jays - "Message In Our Music" (Mike Maurro remix) (11:10)
Review: Disco mixer Mike Muarro has been delivering tasteful, multi-track remixes of disco and soul classics for the last couple of years, and earlier in 2021 delivered a digital-only set of revisions of classic cuts from the Philadelphia International catalogue. This must-check 12" contains two of the most potent reworks from that set. On the A-side you'll find his epic, beautifully executed revision of MFSB's brilliant 'Love is the Message', which features rearranged elements and Tom Moulton style builds, drop outs and instrument solos. He takes a similar approach on the flip, wringing maximum energy and release from the O'Jays 'Message In Our Music' without adding any unnecessary instrumentation. If you're a fan of the Rephlex and Moplen's multi-track revisions, you'll love both remixes.

You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine (Mike Maurro remixes)
  1. You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine (11:29)
  2. See You When I Git There (8:28)
Review: Philadelphia International Records was of course a goldmine for irresistible soul sounds. One of the main men responsible for that was the legend Lou Rawls. This lovely new 12" brings together a couple of his signature sounds with subtle remix work by Mike Maurro. You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine' and 'See You When I Git There' have been taken from the original master tapes and given some modern dance floor touches to make them essential all over again. The a-side in particular has superb drums and aching vocals that stay with you a long time.

Big Stone Wall (Around Your Heart)
Big Stone Wall (Around Your Heart) (limited translucent red vinyl 7")
Cat: BRSPEC 01. Rel: 08 Dec 20
Soul
  1. Big Stone Wall (Around Your Heart) (Mike Maurro remix - edit) (5:03)
  2. Big Stone Wall (Around Your Heart) (2:51)
Review: A Philly Groove Records classic by Tapestry has been mixed, remastered and edited specifically for 7" vinyl on this one, courtesy of Brookside - the record label started by the late Reid Whitelaw. The A side features a remix of the classic "Big Stone Wall" by New York disco don and Brookside label boss Mike Maurro. Over on the B side, it is reserved for the original single version from 1973, complete with an awe-inspiring horns section and roaring, life-affirming vocal delivery.

Hooked For Life (Mike Maurro remixes)
Cat: BRDSK 001. Rel: 08 Jun 21
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. Hooked For Life (Mike Maurro remix) (8:34)
  2. Soul Searchin' Time (Mike Maurro remix) (9:25)
Review: Atlantic Records and Brookside team up to bring new life to some The Trammps classics. They call upon the always on form maestro that is Mike Maurro who updates the 1975 standards (one previously only available in the US, the other only on promo in the UK) with plenty of big extended intros, instrumental passes and breakdowns that will get the floor pumping. Both tunes dazzle with great synth work and heart aching vocals, and have been fully mastered in this sound's homeland, Philadelphia, by Mike Tarsia of the world famous Sigma Sound Studios.
