Review: Following on from the Distant Air EP, bright young things Anushka come back to Brownswood to deliver their debut album, showing off a distinctive twist on R&B that worms subtle flecks of minimal electronics, house music and more into a melancholic, richly melodic soulful whole. "Never Can Decide" is loaded with crossover appeal with its bombastic chorus sweeps while keeping a delicacy in the production that keeps the music on the right path. Really though it's Victoria Port's vocals that shape out the identity of Anushka, charged with just the right kind of energy to worm into many an ear as the Brighton-based duo spread their wings.

Review: Building on his Brownswood debut earlier this year - "Go See" on the label's deep-digging We Out Here collection - Ezra Collective's pianist and composer lays down his most expansive and expressive body of work to date. Weighing in at near album size, it's a powerful experience from the off as Afrikan Revolution's Asheber sets a political framework and sense of freshness and unity on the title track. Elsewhere we're treated to hazy bluesy hip-hop on "Ragify", raw freeform fizz on "London's Face" and soul-soothing narratives in the form of "Mollison Dub". Stunning.

Review: Joe Armon-Jones has been a driving force in the resurgence of contemporary jazz and now makes something of a victory lap with this new album on the always essential Brownswood. It's a very modern mix of bass and dub, du jour club culture and his own jazz styles featuring peers like Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia. Frankly, the whole record is silky, starry-eyed and sublime and the excellent artwork also hist at the cosmic subtleties of this album, but our picks of the bunch are the neo-soul, summery stroll through the park vibes of "Yellow Dandelion", "Gnawa Sweet" which glows with mellifluous Rhodes chords and the uncompromising yet accessible sax and big brass action of album highlight "You Didn't Care".

Review: Cuban vocalist, producer and arranger Dayme Arocena has strong relationship with Brownswood Recordings. She first graced the label in early 2015, and has since gone in to deliver two albums and a clutch of fine singles for Gilles Peterson's imprint. Cubafonia is Arocena's third full length, and continues in a similar vein to previous outings. It's a rich musical tapestry, with Arocena blending traditional Cuban staples (think mambo and rumba) with spiritual jazz, Rotary Connection style soul, Afro-Cuban funk, tear-jerking ballads and jazz-funk. The resultant songs - all top notch - are as steamy, humid and vibrant as you'd expect, but also boast intricate musical arrangements and top quality musicianship.

Review: According to Brownswood Recordings, Dayme Arocena took a conscious decision to opt for a more "stripped back" sound on her latest album, which marks her fourth full-length excursion for Gilles Peterson's admirable imprint. That's certainly the impression given by the opening track, "Nangareo", which sees the Cuban singer layer her own spoken and sung vocals over the sounds of lapping waves and moody, elongated synthesizer chords. It offers a striking introduction to an Afro-Cuban jazz set that smartly incorporates elements of both samba and the distinctive drum rhythms associated with her home country (as well as some superb chanted vocals). As a result, "Sonocardiogram" has an ear-pleasing vibrancy that encourages repeat listens.

Review: After several appearances on Bamalovesoul and various self-released EPs, Diggs Duke steps up to Brownswood with his debut album. Sitting somewhere between Gregory Porter, Amp Fiddler and Stevie Wonder, his unique fusion of soul and jazz is instantly captivating; warm, passionate and laced with rich harmonies and fantastic production, it's in a league of its own. Highlights include the sun-kissed guitar shimmers on "Born From You", the jaunty, heavyweight piano hook and sample science on "Mass Exodus" and the dreamier, beat-heavy "Something In My Soul". As beautiful as it is unique.

Review: Diggs Duke has already featured on Gilles Peterson's mighty Brownswood back in 2014, having dropped an LP that seemed to be tailor-made for the sound of the imprint. Yup, that means sexy nu-jazz and broken beat all mixed up and served on a platter, and this time Duke goes a little further with "He Wants To Live Like You", a sparse, piano-led nu-soul smasher, alongside the groovier, beat-laden hip-hop vibes of "Water For Sale". A tight 7" that will both allure the label's casuals, and the experimental beatsmiths.

Review: Afro space jazz collective let fly with an organic, cosmic jazz salute to the one and only Steve Reid. From the moment the dreamy spirals of "Om Supreme" light the candle, you instantly know this is a special piece of work. Highlights abound on every track but moments such as the harmonic vocals breaking through the fusion on "Hum Allah", the hypnotic over-laying percussive textures of the Kieran Hebden collaboration "Makondi" and the heaving horn royal rumble on "As Of Yet" really need special attention. Spell-binding.

  2. Como (Esa Havana dub) (5:44)
  3. Eleggua (Esa & Narchbeats Kwaai mix) (5:07)
Review: Dayme Arocena's second album Cubafonia was released last year on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood imprint and was 'a tour through the deep-rooted rhythms permeating her native Cuba.' Here the London based, Dekmantel and Worldwide FM affiliated producer Esa takes on remix duties on three of the album's cuts. Across two different mixes of "Como", the first version is neon-lit polyrhythmic tropicalism led by a hypnotising xylophone melody and guided by Arocena's powerful and evocative vocals. There's a handy dub version next. On the flip "Eleggua" sees Esa (with Narchbeats) indeed flipping the script, going from the sunny and uplifting sensibilities of the previous rework and into something more moody and seething for the late night. With its brooding sub bass, wonky synths and smacky rhythms playing backdrop to her powerful wailing vocal performance just perfectly - this one's a right killer!

Review: Having enjoyed a help in hand courtesy of the Arts Council-funded "Future Bubblers" project and mentor Esa (whose Afro-synth band he played in), Forest Law has graduated to the Brownswood Recordings roster. The producer and multi-instrumentalist has a wide palette of influences, but is particularly interested in West African and Brazilian music. These inspirations naturally come to the fore on this inspired debut, which gathers together three tracks bristling with effervescent Latin-percussion, Afrobeat-influenced grooves, Afro-synth electronics and vocals - presumably provided by the artist himself - that sound a little like Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor. It's an alluring blend that results in three fine cuts, of which A-side "New Thoughts New Eyes" - a future dancefloor classic, we reckon - being the pick of a very strong bunch.

Review: When Will Ozanne first emerged in 2011, there was genuine amazement that someone so effortlessly soulful and melancholic could come from Southampton. This is meant as no disrespect to the South Coast city, it's just there's something surprisingly otherworldly about Ozanne's deep and intoxicating blends of blue-eyed soul, melancholic electronics and shuffling psychedelia. This sophomore album shows him at his tear-jerking best, delivering a soft focus set that gloriously joins the dots between low-key pop, leftfield soul, Radiohead-ish electronica, sparse dubstep and dreamy ambience. It's an arresting sound, oozing with heartfelt emotion, and as a result Invisible In Your City rewards repeat listens.

While that may be a bit harsh on the south coast city, there's something surprisingly otherworldly about Ozanne's deep and intoxicating blends of blue-eyed soul, melancholic electronics and shuffling psychedelia.
