Review: Contemporary British jazz drummer-master Yussef Dayes returns with Black Classical Music, a monumental 18-track LP that not only contains collaborations with Rocco Palladino, Charlie Stacey, Alfa Mist, and Mansur Brown, but flaunt his compositional chops after the immediate fact of the studio, with the likes of 'Rust' and 'Early Dayes' laying down a heartfelt and clean foray into the nu-est expression of British jazz yet. Predominantly made in collaboration with Black artists, it's an album that aims to chart the history of an entire art form a fresh perspective, evidently tracing the line of his own personal past-present at the same time.

It is a 19-track trip into his own past and present that also explores themes of home and the family. It is inspired by Hayes's musical heroes Miles Davis and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, as well as his own endless travels around the world, all of which have helped to deepen his understanding of rhythm. Plenty of top features add to the richness here including Chronixx, Tom Misch, Shabaka Hutchings, Nathaniel Cross, Theon Cross and the Chineke! Orchestra, amongst many others.

Review: This is a special white vinyl version of the new album from Yussef Dayes. His Black Classical is another superbly classy work from an artist who rarely misses. Review: At one with nature and evolution - while challenging reductionist ideas like survival of the fittest - the artist known as Davina Adeosun-Bright, aka. Muva Of Earth, here presents her latest album on Brownswood, Align With Nature's Intelligence. A spiritual jazz opus full of confidence, it instantly recalls the historic trace of Alice Coltrane, Lonnie Liston Smith or Pharoah Sanders, as we hear the Muva effortlessly command every instrument at her disposal - from harp to voice - while staking impassioned claims to her femininity, ancestry and empowerment. Sonically, it's implied that the only way to achieve an "evolved thinking" is through a return to source, and that's done using seemingly endless beds of twinkly jazz shimmer, which form the backbone for progressive double bass, vocal and drum-brushed wildouts.

Review: Gilles Peterson's dedication to unearthing new artists is second to none. He has long championed the next generation as much as he has carefully dug out delights from his vast vaults of jazz, world, soul and Latin music, both on his various radio shows but also his own label Brownswood. The Future Bubbler series is where he does that best and now it hits a seventh volume with eight more tracks from fresh creative talents who explore broken beat, nu jazz and plenty of in between styles in all in their own unique ways.

Review: Members, Don't Git Weary is a Max Roach classic that now gets reissued by the Gilles Peterson-curated Arc Records. It has been mastered in mono from the original analogue tapes by the multi-Grammy winning Bernie Grundman. It comes with new sleeve-notes featuring Charles Tolliver and Gary Bartz and never before seen images of Roach from Warners archives. Originally released in 1968, it's a highlight of Roach's discography with post-bop sounds and modal workouts, some of which are written by Roach, some by Stanley Cowell and one by Gary Bartz.

Review: Secret Night Gang is a Manchester crew formed by Callum Connell and Kemani Anderson, school mates who have been writing together for a long old time before bringing bassist Stuart Whitehead into the fold. After debuting on Brownswood in 2021 with an EP and an album, they're back with a follow-up which sees them going deeper and farther, leading in with the bumping neo-soul perfection of 'Out Of My Head' as the upfront single and packing nine other essential joints from one of the most exciting bands to be doing it in the UK right now. Just dip into 'Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings' and discover the sweet spot between D'Angelo, Funkadelic and Roy Ayers they've tapped into.

Review: Str4ta is a joint project that includes Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul Maunick aka Bluey, inspired by 80s Brit funk bands. In 2022, Str4ta released their third album Str4tasfear for Gilles's label, Brownswood Recordings and this 12" stamped white label offers two dance remixes of two tracks from Str4tasfear. For the A-side, 'To Be As One' is remixed by Venom with vocal by Theo Croker. This soulful house version is jazzy and slightly psychedelic, that gives off a tremendous 70s vibe to it, while the second side sees 'Lazy Days' is remixed by Wallace, adding a bit more of a Latin house feel and features Emma Jean Thackray on vocals. Both versions turn the originals into the perfect dancefloor shufflers for eclectic people. This is the perfect 12" for house, soul and Latin DJs to express their more jazzy side.

It features music from his critically acclaimed debut solo album, Black Classical Music, and plenty of other gems on limited vinyl with features from his usual longtime collaborators Rocco Palladino, Venna, Elijah Fox, and Alexander Bourt.
