Hip Hop Saved My Life (4:01)
Hip Hop Saved My Life (Space remix) (4:25)
Review: Australia-based American Ivan "Choi" Khatchoyan made his name as the producer/arranger behind funk band The Traffic. Here he switches focus, joining forces with veteran mic man Guilty Simpson for a club-ready hip-hop outing that's every bit as good as his funk and soul productions. The A-side original version is hazy, hot and heavy, with Simpson's celebratory flows about hip-hop culture rising above a slick, '80s style backing track rich in fuzzy bass, vibrant synthesizer lines, organ stabs and some suitably tight scratches. Over on side B the "Space Remix" sees him re-invent the track as a head-nodding slab of boom-bap deepness for those who fancy lighting up and listening rather than dancing.

Problems & Pain (3:54)
Review: Australia's Choi Records keep the funk hot with a second seven inch serving in a matter of months that introduces the Juno office to the refined sounds of Melbourne troupe Fulton Street. The funk and soul septet are led - in classic fashion - by the wonderfully belting vocals of lead singer Shannon Wick whose commanding delivery ensures lead track, "Young People", slots in nicely in the long-running canon of socially-conscious funk jammers. Behind her, the Fulton Street band show what a tight instrumental unit they are. On the flip, Fulton Street's groovier side comes to the fore on "Problems & Pain" with Sly & The Family Stone and The JBs coming to mind as the band's organ and sax players lead the way. A great 7".

On The Ropes (vocal) (3:19)
On The Ropes (instrumental) (3:19)
Review: Melbourne is home to one of the strongest funk revival scenes on the planet. Amongst the scene's heaviest hitters - in more than one sense - is drummer-turned-producer Ivan Kkatchoyan. Having been part of heavy funk combo Cookin' On 3 Burners since the dawn of the millennium, he's now the driving force behind Choi Records. His heavy funk rhythms and astute period production are at the heart of Mayfield's "On The Ropes", which also includes some stellar horns and - in its A-side form, at least - some on-point vocals from Carla Troiano. Like previous Choi releases by Traffic and Fulton Street, it's a revivalist funk treat.

Beat It (4:42)
Thriller (4:50)
Review: Melbourne, Australia based sextet The Traffic, headed up by Ivan 'Choi' Khatchoyan, serve up a special MJ feature funk 45. Presented in a special pressing in red vinyl with black splatter, we get awesome renditions of Michael Jackson tracks 'Beat It' and 'Thriller' from his iconic Thriller album from 1982. The big band energy of the players make these cover versions worthy your attention, with a killer horns section imitating the king of pop's falsetto to great effect.

Chasin' Feels (4:43)
Review: Now here's a traffic jam we're all happy to be in... Aussie funk super troupe The Traffic (comprising members of The Bamboos, Cooking On 3 Burners, Pickpocket and Punkawallahs) come correct with this follow up to their debut last year. Come for the awesome party-melting, wall-shaking Daft Punk cover on the A, stay for the groove-based soul-laced broken beat jam "Chasin' Feels". Both poles in their clearly broad and skilful musical scope, we can't wait to hear what they've got coming next.

Smack My Pitch Up (4:04)
Review: Australia's Choi Records drop their second release in the shape of two powerful cover versions either side of a devilish little 7" by The Traffic. The A-side, "White Lines", is a funky, horn-led reinterpretation of Grandmaster Flash's original tune : an instrumental brass ode to the original beast. On the flip, there's "Smack My Pitch Up", another mighty instrumental rework of The Prodigy classic, complete with a string of trumpets that imitate the original's inimitable vocal loop.

Fire (3:43)
Bangarang (4:07)
Review: New Australian band The Traffic is made up of some of the best instrumentalists in the Melbourne scene. They have the honour of being behind this first-ever release for the new Choi Records funk label - it's a reissue of their correctly entitled 'Fire' 7" which packs in plenty of real heat. The A-side is a mad and high-speed chase with prickly drum work and some characterful and conversational flute and horn leads that play back and forth with real energy. Flip it over for 'Bangarang', a more stripped-back but just as funky, fat-bottomed roller with more big horn work.

Smack My Pitch Up (4:05)
Review: Australia's Choi Records struck gold with this, which was just their second release back in November 2022. It features two powerful cover versions either side of a tidy 7" by The Traffic which soon sold out and now gets a welcome reissue. On the A-side is the majestic 'White Lines', a funky, horn-led reinterpretation of the iconic original by the one and only Grandmaster Flash, an instrumental brass ode to the original beast. On the B-side you will find 'Smack My Pitch Up', another instrumental rework this time of a classic by The Prodigy classic, complete with a string of trumpets that imitate the original's inimitable vocal loop.
