Review: This sprawling and ramshackle Canadian indie collective here dispenses its first record in all of seven years, and its one that manages a sterling job of delivering the kind of emotionally uplifting anthem and restless sonic experimentation that have always rendered them a more charming and approachable prospect than most. Big hitters like Feist and Metric's Emily Haines are present and correct as contributors here - the former on a title cut that's yearning without being cloying, the latter on the driving blast of 'Protest Song'. All things connsidered, this is a deliriously upbeat and endlessly inventive triumph - true to form, the perfect band to deliver hope in troubled times.

Review: Is it the biggest upset of Christmas 2020? Calexico put their exceptional reputation on the line with a foray into the rarely-worthwhile world of seasonal albums and pull it off. And in doing so prove you've not heard every decent festive tune already, and this year's holidays might be manageable after all.
While there are two covers, a great take on Tom Petty's 'Christmas All Over Again' and a poorly-judged 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' by John Lennon & Yoko Ono (did we need another?), the original material really stands out. 'The Bells' deftly marries pedal steel guitars, strings and brass like only these Americana titans know how, mood skilfully switching between celebratory and sombre. 'Heart of Downtown' is mariachi rock 'n' roll. 'Glory's Hope' is a delicate, thoughtful soundtrack to midnight brandy. Review: Ahead of his massively popular third album under the Caribou alias, Dan Snaith was quite generous in his praise for James Holden and regularly explained in interviews how Swim was influenced musically by the music on his Border Community imprint. It's seems natural then that Holden would be called on to provide a remix of "Bowls" which is quite rightly bound to get draped in words such as epic, grandiose and colossal. Taking up nearly all the blackness on the B Side, Holden crafts an 11 minute reimagination which rivals his legendary Nathan Fake remix for all round awesomeness. Taking elements of the already distinctive original, Holden twists and moulds them into a kaleidoscopic pattern of sounds which transcends genre pigeon holing.

Review: Some four years after Swims brought the work of Dan Snaith to the attention of a whole new audience, the London-based Canadian artist returns with a sixth Caribou album entitled Our Love. Staunch followers of Caribou will know that Snaith tends to adopt different sonic approaches with every long player (compare the psychedelia of Up In Flames with the more spaced out Andorra) but this latest album feels like a natural development of the club influenced sounds of Swims. City Slang call it Snaith's most soulful set yet, and that's certainly helped by the presence of compatriot Jessy Lanza, and like all Caribou albums there is something new that appeals with every listen.

Review: Caribou is a musical behemoth by now, but back in 2007 he was still very much an underground darling. He was also still largely known in indie circles before making a hugely successful transition to electronic circles with his Sun album. Andorra came before that and reminds us what a master of pastoral sounds and new electronic folk he was. Filled with delightful songs that will have you all emotional for reasons you cannot understand, it is as artful as it is beautiful. It's a limited repress on white, heavyweight vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, too, making it all the more essential.

Review: Aside from a recent outing under the DJ Jenifa name on Mule Musiq, it's been a while since we last heard any new music from the Essex man known as Gold Panda. Three years on from his last LP, the Ghostly Intl-released Half Of Where You Live, Gold Panda resurfaces on a new label in City Slang with his third album, Good Luck And Do Your Best. This eleven-track adventure is directly inspired by several trips through Japan (indeed GP was originally there with the intention of making a documentary) and have been slimmed down from over 18 months of recordings. Some limber-fingered usage of sample flipping is present from the off as Gold Panda presents a delightfully off-kilter brand of slumped instrumental beatscapes that run the range of tempos and moods.

Review: "I made ['The Work'] over the last year at home in my temporary studio which was supposed to be the living room, while um, building my actual studio," Gold Panda said of his latest record, arguably his most introspective and - factually - his first full-length in more than six years. Made at home over the course of around 12 months, the track 'I've Felt Better (Than I Do Now)' has been doing the rounds for a while ahead of this full length and turned many heads in the process.
While that number, and the excellent Daniel Avery remix, is a pretty warm slice of future-bass leaning house with filter (although maybe not quite filter house), the complete package represents a more exploratory and personal sound from the music maker in question, although one that's no less immediate in its engagement of the listener. Simply put, it's very interesting and also very good.

Review: Late Reflections is a live recording of Grandbrothers in an ancient Catholic cathedral. The one-of-a-kind concert saw them play music specially designed for the massive main nave (it stands 45 meters tall) and all of the magical acoustics of the unusual space are captured on vinyl. This is the fourth album from the German-Swiss duo known for their fusion of the old and the new. They once again blur the boundaries between ambient, classical, minimalism and electronic sound in richly textured piano pieces. There is a freeform and uprising atmosphere to these tunes that make you feel in constant ascendancy to the heavens, and it's beautiful indeed.

Review: Turkish synth pop pride Jakuzi land a major record deal with the always trustworthy City Slang. Debuting in 2017 with the indie pop Fantezi Muzik LP, the trio, straight out of Istanbul's yet to be mined alternative pop scene, sees the group this time around deliver something that's slightly darker than before. Darker in the sense, that is, that their music now sounds more like Depeche Mode and The Sisters of Mercy, or even These New Puritans, than the sun-catching sounds of their previous release. Gothic tendencies to their instrumentalisation remain throughout the LP, and dark disco plays a part too alongside strands of post-punk guitars that all coalesse into a LP that will no doubt appeal to the shadier realms of pop and synth music lovers.

Review: Canada's Junior Boys have been running the synth-pop game since the late 90s and, in our eyes, they're as fundamental to the scene as other outfits like Hot Chip or Simian Mobile Disco. They are now made up of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, and this time they return with a follow-up EP to their recent album for Christof Ellinghaus' City Slang. "Yes" is a delightful pseudo-house number with the boys' vocals riding the crest of the wave, and "Baby Fat" feels like a natural progression thanks to its soft house beats and watery lyrics. The B-side features "Some People Are Crazy", a sublime electronica piece with a sunken, moody tone that encapsulates them perfectly as a group, while "Kiss Me All Night" flaps its stuttering beats and sonic waves to a rigged husk of vocals. Bang.

Review: If you've ever fallen for the mythical Lewis album L'Amour, you'll probably get off on this. First thing's first, the two are very, very different records - Lewis' work is so soft and quiet at times it comes close to no longer existing, but the whole thing has this romantic, skin-on-skin by candlelight, whisper-in-ear quality to it that seems to go straight for the heart and make itself a home right there.

Namely creating modern day show tunes as though plucked from the Great Broadway Song Book itself. Try not to panic though, the results are more Madame Butterfly than Grease. Sort of.
Perhaps not so much operatic, but instead soundtracking a particularly bleak - or at least realistic - type of musical, not to mention a modern one, we have bass and string oddities, trip hop beauties and even stuff approaching operatics. If all that sounds too much don't be too scared, this is still the same band that you've always thought could do no wrong, and they pull this one off with ease.

Review: Times change, things get worse, outlooks seem bleaker, and the storm grows more severe. It's times like these you really need a ballast, something to hold on to and call upon for reassurance. Since inception, Lambchop have tried to be that force for good in a world hellbent on marching to madness. And The Bible is the group's finest hour for several years, although on the face of things it's not necessarily very different from immediate predecessors.
Lead singer Kurt Wagner has frequently quipped that his band don't really fit the country genre label, but again we're struggling to think of where else to place this. Country and Western it certainly isn't, but the totems are definitely down that route. That strong, iconic, patient and thought-provoking yet scarred voice, songs dealing with both the festival and comedown of life itself. This is slow, piercingly poignant stuff, from the heartbroken piano quiet of 'So There', to gospel-infused jazz on 'Police Dog Blues'.

Review: Los Bitchos are barreling out of the London underground with a deadly focus and a sound which is sure to take them far. The four-piece place tequila and cumbia at the top of their interests, which should tell you plenty, and to date they've put out a few furtive 7"s which showcase their twanging, surfy psych sound. It's also got a sizable dub throb to it thanks to the heavyweight b-lines and plenty of reverb, and this debut album drop on City Slang is the perfect intro into their world of good time intoxication and serious musical chops. Every player is on point, and they sound like they know exactly what they're aiming for - expect to be shaking down to their sound in any number of festival scenarios this summer.

Review: Tindersticks are certainly outliers in the era of early 90s British indie music. When everyone was going wild for ego-driven Beatles knock-offs and foppish one-hit wonders, or elsewhere reveling in washed out shoegaze reveries, Tindersticks sat somewhere in the middle, the consummate square peg dishing out strung-out country rock twang, labyrinthe narratives and dreamy production. It's at once obtuse and incredibly easy on the ears, and now you can revisit the best of the bands' work across several patches of productivity from 1992 to the present day, thanks to this authoritative four-disc box set from City Slang.

Review: Remixes of To Rococo Rot from Four Tet and a Daniel Miller/Gareth Jones collaborative effort line up either side of this City Slang 12"; released in anticipation of the label priming a much needed reissue programme of the three LPs the Berlin trio released with them. Both Four Tet and Mute founder Miller are long term aficionados of To Rococo Rot and their efforts here will also feature on a bonus disc of material that City Slang are releasing as part of an extensive box set, though these two remixes truly belong on 12 inch vinyl. You can tell how much of a fan Four Tet is, as his remix of "He Loves Me", a track from the band's 1997 archetypal release Veiculo, retains the trio's minimalist origins yet masterfully teases out all new glistening melodic intricacies - the unrestrained female cheer towards the end does sound amusingly out of place however. Complementing this, Miller and Jones rework "The Amateur View" into what they have quite aptly described as a "Krautrock disco truck".

Review: It's safe to say when City Slang releases a record everyone listens, with White Denim now the newest Texan contingent filling the ranks of the German label. Following a longplayer this year from Calexico outta Tucson, White Denim bring the sound of Austin to the label by delivering their ninth long player in ten years. Like the artwork of performance, the music is a colourful montage that brings together saxxy jazz, mellow tropicana and distorted garage to psych rock and pop, with melancholic vocals only adding to its unique cross section of colours. A highlight for us is the '70s Biker rock of "It Might Get Dark" and finger snappin', vibrato heavy "Moves On".
