Review: This sprawling and ramshackle Canadian indie collective here dispenses its first record in all of seven years, and its one that manages a sterling job of delivering the kind of emotionally uplifting anthem and restless sonic experimentation that have always rendered them a more charming and approachable prospect than most. Big hitters like Feist and Metric's Emily Haines are present and correct as contributors here - the former on a title cut that's yearning without being cloying, the latter on the driving blast of 'Protest Song'. All things connsidered, this is a deliriously upbeat and endlessly inventive triumph - true to form, the perfect band to deliver hope in troubled times.

Review: Is it the biggest upset of Christmas 2020? Calexico put their exceptional reputation on the line with a foray into the rarely-worthwhile world of seasonal albums and pull it off. And in doing so prove you've not heard every decent festive tune already, and this year's holidays might be manageable after all.

While there are two covers, a great take on Tom Petty's 'Christmas All Over Again' and a poorly-judged 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' by John Lennon & Yoko Ono (did we need another?), the original material really stands out. 'The Bells' deftly marries pedal steel guitars, strings and brass like only these Americana titans know how, mood skilfully switching between celebratory and sombre. 'Heart of Downtown' is mariachi rock 'n' roll. 'Glory's Hope' is a delicate, thoughtful soundtrack to midnight brandy. Ending on 'Mi Burrito Sabanero (Reprise)', essentially a huge Merry Christmas and message of hope for 2021, Seasonal Shift is a Yuletide miracle.

Bowls (Holden remix)
Review: Ahead of his massively popular third album under the Caribou alias, Dan Snaith was quite generous in his praise for James Holden and regularly explained in interviews how Swim was influenced musically by the music on his Border Community imprint. It's seems natural then that Holden would be called on to provide a remix of "Bowls" which is quite rightly bound to get draped in words such as epic, grandiose and colossal. Taking up nearly all the blackness on the B Side, Holden crafts an 11 minute reimagination which rivals his legendary Nathan Fake remix for all round awesomeness. Taking elements of the already distinctive original, Holden twists and moulds them into a kaleidoscopic pattern of sounds which transcends genre pigeon holing.

Review: Caribou is a musical behemoth by now, but back in 2007 he was still very much an underground darling. He was also still largely known in indie circles before making a hugely successful transition to electronic circles with his Sun album. Andorra came before that and reminds us what a master of pastoral sounds and new electronic folk he was. Filled with delightful songs that will have you all emotional for reasons you cannot understand, it is as artful as it is beautiful. It's a limited repress on white, heavyweight vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, too, making it all the more essential.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight tear and creasing to corner of outer sleeve, product unopened and in excellent condition***

Some four years after Swims brought the work of Dan Snaith to the attention of a whole new audience, the London-based Canadian artist returns with a sixth Caribou album entitled Our Love. Staunch followers of Caribou will know that Snaith tends to adopt different sonic approaches with every long player (compare the psychedelia of Up In Flames with the more spaced out Andorra) but this latest album feels like a natural development of the club influenced sounds of Swims. City Slang call it Snaith's most soulful set yet, and that's certainly helped by the presence of compatriot Jessy Lanza, and like all Caribou albums there is something new that appeals with every listen.

Review: The launch of the Love Record Stores project has inspired numerous labels to deliver new editions of classic albums, especially those celebrating an anniversary in 2020. That's the case with Caribou's fifth studio album, "Swim", which this year celebrates its 10th birthday. This special edition of the set has been pressed to marble vinyl and comes with a code to download the whole album. "Swim" remains one of the strongest albums in Dan Snaith's bulging back catalogue, featuring as it does woozy, drowsy and tactile tracks that draw inspiration from everything from folktronica, post-punk, jazz-house and ambient, to IDM, lo-fi pop, breakbeat and outsider house.

Never Come Back (Floating Points remix) (9:00)
Sister (Floating Points remix) (7:07)
Review: Having already seen his synth-pop-meets-piano-house gem "Never Come Back" successfully remixed by Four Tet and Morgan Geist, Dan "Caribou" Snaith has now handed over the parts to Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. While those versions retained the core elements of Snaith's warm and ear-pleasing original mix, Shepherd has chosen to re-imagine it as the kind of positive, spacey, musically detailed and rushing late night deep house jam with which he originally made his name a decade ago. It has serious sub-bass weight, too, and is one of his most impressive club-focused outings for some time. It's worth buying the 12" for that mix alone, but his wonderfully deep, sub-heavy, garage-influenced rework of another "Suddenly" album track, "Sister", is also superb. In other words, you need this in your life.

Never Come Back (Four Tet remix) (7:57)
Never Come Back (Morgan Geist remix) (7:25)
Review: When Caribou, Four Tet and Morgan Geist appear on the same 12", you know it's going to be huge. And it is. First up, Kieran Hebdan takes "Never Come Back" and warps the bass, builds plenty of tense percussive energy and layers in some sci-fi synths that take the track into the next dimension. It's epic, as is always the way with Hebden, and ripe for some rave reactions. Cult neo-disco innovator Morgan Geist does something completely different - his drums skip and ping, with a breathy and soul drenched vocal next to lush cosmic chords. It's bouncy, playful, brilliant.

Review: Canadian artist Caribou's much-adored album 'Our Love' hears a reissue, harkening back to a time still occupying vaguely recent memory in which festival summers from the mid-to-late 2010s were dominated by Dan Snaith's band-backed productions and innocent croons. Explosive at the time of its release, hits such as 'Can't Do Without U', 'All I Ever Need' and 'Dive' are now veritably etched into the public consciousness, and it all comes down to Snaith's spelt-out use of soul vocal samples and cleverly warm house production.

Review: It's quite shocking it's been six years since the last Caribou album, 2014's knockout "Our Love". Dan Snaith has never felt the need to rush his music out, and there was an interim Daphni album in 2017 to be fair to the guy, but here we are with a new set that sees Snaith returning to a little of the delicate songwriting and winsome electronica he forged his reputation on in the early days. There's a lot going on in here, from smooth as silk yacht rock-isms to deliriously modernist cut ups and more than a few wild pitch shifts to keep listeners on their toes. It's playful and heartfelt, and rarely lingers in one place for too long while still retaining a sense of calm. It may be not at all what you expected from Caribou's return, but we'd wager it's even better than you hoped.

Review: COMA has always operated in a world where melody is in high supply and indie and electronica have collided in fresh new ways. The artist is not one to hide away from a big hook or a pop tip line and always manages to imbue their work with tons of emotion. This new album is another step forward that investigates sonic realms ask just how broad the scope of club music can really be. That means Fuzzy Fantasy is in many ways a departure from all-out dance floor focus into something more human and nuanced.

Your Good Times Are Just Beginning
Review: Gold Panda is a highly coveted producer who has released on big-name labels such as K7 and Ghostly International, but the majority of his daring and diverse work has come courtesy of the City Slang imprint where he returns to now with the Good Luck And Do You Best LP. 'Hybrid' is the key takeaway from this album, as every single tune seems to be a sublime mixture of different genres, styles and inspirations; tunes like "Chiba Nights" contain a vivid house element at their core, and yet they branch out into many different territories, while others "Song For A Dead Friend" manage to blend elements of juke, ambient and noise, all wrapped up in Gold Panda's singular vision.

Review: Aside from a recent outing under the DJ Jenifa name on Mule Musiq, it's been a while since we last heard any new music from the Essex man known as Gold Panda. Three years on from his last LP, the Ghostly Intl-released Half Of Where You Live, Gold Panda resurfaces on a new label in City Slang with his third album, Good Luck And Do Your Best. This eleven-track adventure is directly inspired by several trips through Japan (indeed GP was originally there with the intention of making a documentary) and have been slimmed down from over 18 months of recordings. Some limber-fingered usage of sample flipping is present from the off as Gold Panda presents a delightfully off-kilter brand of slumped instrumental beatscapes that run the range of tempos and moods.

Review: It sort of feels right now that Daniel Avery can do no wrong. He's the dance music indie kid who brings a different perspective to electronic music and always has. Once mentored by Andrew Weatherall and a long-time fav of Erol Alkan, he steps out here in remix mode and flips Gold Panda's 'I've Felt Better' into one of his typically textured, smoky and experimental pieces. On the flipside is the Illian Tape regular and purveyor of all things dark, breaky and techno, Skee Mask, with a fresh take on 'Plastic Future' that makes this a high class 12".

Review: "I made ['The Work'] over the last year at home in my temporary studio which was supposed to be the living room, while um, building my actual studio," Gold Panda said of his latest record, arguably his most introspective and - factually - his first full-length in more than six years. Made at home over the course of around 12 months, the track 'I've Felt Better (Than I Do Now)' has been doing the rounds for a while ahead of this full length and turned many heads in the process.

While that number, and the excellent Daniel Avery remix, is a pretty warm slice of future-bass leaning house with filter (although maybe not quite filter house), the complete package represents a more exploratory and personal sound from the music maker in question, although one that's no less immediate in its engagement of the listener. Simply put, it's very interesting and also very good.

Now comes his much anticipated fourth album which is another testament to his ability to draw you in and hypnotise you with his unique rhythmic style. Hugely pastoral and organic throughout, this record packs in plenty of mesmeric guitar paying and on some songs drum machine grooves. As always there is the odd reinterpretation of other artists' work and plenty of vital originals that come infused with elements of music from all over the world.

Review: Late Reflections is a live recording of Grandbrothers in an ancient Catholic cathedral. The one-of-a-kind concert saw them play music specially designed for the massive main nave (it stands 45 meters tall) and all of the magical acoustics of the unusual space are captured on vinyl. This is the fourth album from the German-Swiss duo known for their fusion of the old and the new. They once again blur the boundaries between ambient, classical, minimalism and electronic sound in richly textured piano pieces. There is a freeform and uprising atmosphere to these tunes that make you feel in constant ascendancy to the heavens, and it's beautiful indeed.

Review: Turkish synth pop pride Jakuzi land a major record deal with the always trustworthy City Slang. Debuting in 2017 with the indie pop Fantezi Muzik LP, the trio, straight out of Istanbul's yet to be mined alternative pop scene, sees the group this time around deliver something that's slightly darker than before. Darker in the sense, that is, that their music now sounds more like Depeche Mode and The Sisters of Mercy, or even These New Puritans, than the sun-catching sounds of their previous release. Gothic tendencies to their instrumentalisation remain throughout the LP, and dark disco plays a part too alongside strands of post-punk guitars that all coalesse into a LP that will no doubt appeal to the shadier realms of pop and synth music lovers.

Review: Canada's Junior Boys have been running the synth-pop game since the late 90s and, in our eyes, they're as fundamental to the scene as other outfits like Hot Chip or Simian Mobile Disco. They are now made up of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, and this time they return with a follow-up EP to their recent album for Christof Ellinghaus' City Slang. "Yes" is a delightful pseudo-house number with the boys' vocals riding the crest of the wave, and "Baby Fat" feels like a natural progression thanks to its soft house beats and watery lyrics. The B-side features "Some People Are Crazy", a sublime electronica piece with a sunken, moody tone that encapsulates them perfectly as a group, while "Kiss Me All Night" flaps its stuttering beats and sonic waves to a rigged husk of vocals. Bang.

The Canadian twosome's music has lost none of its depth and sparkle, with Waiting Game containing the same key ingredients as its predecessors - namely dreamy, warming chords, soft-focus drum machine rhythms, melancholic melodies, occasional guitars and the distinctive, evocative vocals of front man Jeremy Greenspan. It's a formula that rarely fails if truth be told, so it's no surprise to find that Waiting Game is a genuinely strong set. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the simmering, sunset-friendly warmth of the CD-closing title track and the hushed, ultra-deep shuffle of 'Night Walk', where bubbly electronics, woozy pads and lo-fi electronic drums catch the ear.

Review: If you've ever fallen for the mythical Lewis album L'Amour, you'll probably get off on this. First thing's first, the two are very, very different records - Lewis' work is so soft and quiet at times it comes close to no longer existing, but the whole thing has this romantic, skin-on-skin by candlelight, whisper-in-ear quality to it that seems to go straight for the heart and make itself a home right there.

Junior Boys' Waiting Game isn't anything like L'Amour in terms of sounds, but that same sense of getting very close and very personal with what you're listening to, a record that's soon to be your lover, pervades everything here. Certainly more in the opening tracks, 'Night Walk''s warm, spring evening in Miami vibe, 'It Never Occurred To Me' and its strange, staccato use of vocoder'd lyrics and gliding refrains. Electro synth for the bedroom, no less.

Review: King Hannah are an indie duo consisting of Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle, and here they deliver their debut album, a heartbroken 12-tracker of breathy angst, betrayal, and sublime feel. Between Merrick's under-the-table vocals and Whittle's muted yet crunch-fuelled guitar playing, this heartwarmer hears the duo explore womanhood, coming of age, acceptance and speechlessness, all married together by a stunning production sheen and an array of influences from Bruce Springsteen, PJ Harvey and Nico.

Review: Few could argue with Liverpool's claims as a city in possessions of one of Europe's most enduring musical legacies, but sometimes this can work against a town once the smoke clears and hysteria subsides. Suffice to say, many of Merseyside's biggest and best loved names have either long since hung up their instruments or faded into heritage territory, but every once in a while you're reminded how fertile the place is right now.

King Hannah have been a long time coming. Founding members Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle long dreamt of forming a proper band, both having musical stories to tell long before opting to work together. We're very glad they did, with the results this dark, brooding, sexy, sophisticated, gritty interpretation of rock. Hypnotic, groovy, delicate in all the right places but with enough bite to take your head clean off without a second thought. As this double package containing debut EP and album proves.

Review: Big Swimmer marks a significant evolution for King Hannah, reflecting a newfound confidence and clarity in their sound. Merrick's vocals soar with a newfound assurance, complemented by Whittle's blazing guitar work. The album strikes a balance between prickly and heartening imagery, leaving listeners spellbound and emotionally stirred. With each track, King Hannah showcases a deep understanding of their strengths and vision for the future, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in their sonic landscape. From traversing the waters of the Atlantic to commanding rock venues, the band's journey is palpable in every note. Big Swimmer is a compelling testament to King Hannah's growth and artistic prowess, leaving listeners with hairs standing on end and a yearning for the summer lake depicted in its enchanting storytelling.

Review: Contrary to what many may have initially suspected of Kurt Wagner when he first arrived on the scene some twenty years ago, his rootsy demeanour and country-tinged melancholy have always been tempered by sly innovation and a restless spirit. His main departure thus far may have been the soul-tinged 'Nixon', yet 'Flotus' - taking on board electronic textures and vocoder-enhanced melody of no little beauty - is proof that his experiments have paid off. These soundscapes may be the most melancholy and affecting this wry and unique songsmith has created yet, quietly beating Radiohead and Bon Iver at their own game with style and restraint to spare.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Don't expect too much of yourself, Kurt Wagner. Rather than opting to continue down the country-tinged rock route we have come to expect from the fabled Lambchop, for Showtunes the frontman wanted to set something of a challenge for himself and the group. Namely creating modern day show tunes as though plucked from the Great Broadway Song Book itself. Try not to panic though, the results are more Madame Butterfly than Grease. Sort of.

Perhaps not so much operatic, but instead soundtracking a particularly bleak - or at least realistic - type of musical, not to mention a modern one, we have bass and string oddities, trip hop beauties and even stuff approaching operatics. If all that sounds too much don't be too scared, this is still the same band that you've always thought could do no wrong, and they pull this one off with ease.

Review: Berliner label City Slang reissie 'Nixon' by Lambchop, the seventh album by the alt-country favourites, and arguably their most enduringly famous. Led by the un-pigeonholeable Kurt Wagner as ever, this curt and bluesy sonic statement is one to show anyone who might denigrate country music without knowing a thing or two about it. Lo-fi and packed with twangy licks and muttery vocals, everything here is catchy, straight-up, and verges on the weird.

Review: Times change, things get worse, outlooks seem bleaker, and the storm grows more severe. It's times like these you really need a ballast, something to hold on to and call upon for reassurance. Since inception, Lambchop have tried to be that force for good in a world hellbent on marching to madness. And The Bible is the group's finest hour for several years, although on the face of things it's not necessarily very different from immediate predecessors.

Lead singer Kurt Wagner has frequently quipped that his band don't really fit the country genre label, but again we're struggling to think of where else to place this. Country and Western it certainly isn't, but the totems are definitely down that route. That strong, iconic, patient and thought-provoking yet scarred voice, songs dealing with both the festival and comedown of life itself. This is slow, piercingly poignant stuff, from the heartbroken piano quiet of 'So There', to gospel-infused jazz on 'Police Dog Blues'.

Review: Los Bitchos are barreling out of the London underground with a deadly focus and a sound which is sure to take them far. The four-piece place tequila and cumbia at the top of their interests, which should tell you plenty, and to date they've put out a few furtive 7"s which showcase their twanging, surfy psych sound. It's also got a sizable dub throb to it thanks to the heavyweight b-lines and plenty of reverb, and this debut album drop on City Slang is the perfect intro into their world of good time intoxication and serious musical chops. Every player is on point, and they sound like they know exactly what they're aiming for - expect to be shaking down to their sound in any number of festival scenarios this summer.

Review: Originally released in 2005, 'The Weight Is A Gift' is the sound of band becoming more comfortable in its own skin - already thirteen years into their career and having originally made their mark as makers of grunge-tinged angst, this was where frontman Matthew Caws' songwriting took on a notably reflective and mature aspect, rendering this band as less the stuff of tantrums and rage than more bittersweet and restrained work one might expect from the like of Paul Westerberg or Evan Dando, were they still making records worth listening to. An unshowy charm offensive from one of the US' most rewarding and understated bands.

Review: Some bands just can't be kept down, not that we'd want to try so the point is perhaps hard to prove. Self-doubt aside, Nada Surf are one of those groups, veterans of the Brooklyn indie rock scene that don't seem to have a bad album in them, "Never Not Together" is their glorious ninth, and it's just as powerful, optimistic yet reflective as ever.

Throughout their oeuvre the outfit have always felt as though they were in search of something, not that there are any sonic elements missing. Here again we can't help but feel a tangible yearning, that speaks to our hearts and feet as one. The propellant rhythm but sparse instrumentation on "So Much Love", the evolution of "Mathilda" from humble intro to full-throttle riff march are just two examples that invoke a sense of journey, which sounds so good. As such here's hoping they never reach that destination.

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for veteran leftfield indie rockers The Notwist. Their last album - the lo-fi cinematic soundtrack collection Music for "Storm" - dropped way back in 2009, making this belated comeback for City Slang long overdue. Happily, Close to the Glass is an impressive collection, offering just the right balance between Pavement-ish lo-fi fuzziness, touchy-feeling piano-laden atmospherics, folksy beauty and curiously experimental analogue electronics. While excellent throughout, it's when they bring all of these strands together - such as on the superb "Run, Run, Run" - that Close to the Glass really soars. As comebacks go, it's quietly impressive.

For this album, she works at Gary's Electric Studio in Brooklyn, NY with regular collaborators including multi-instrumentalist and engineer Al Carlson and keyboardist Matt McDermott. Review: Mark the date - 17th February 2023 - because Anna B Savage is having a bumper week (month, and year). Not only is the London-based singer, songwriter and musician guaranteed to win over scores of new fans through her appearance on Orbital's new record (one of the standout tracks on a standout album), but she also gets to unveil her own aural manifesto via In Flux.

To say it's destined to make an impression on you would be an understatement. Savage by name, perhaps not savage by nature but certainly emotionally raw, vulnerable, and uncompromising. Songs about having disappointing sex, lyrics cutting to make way for broken electro-jazz and a chorus about wanting to be alone being just one example. Musically adventurous, lyrically almost uncomfortably bang-on about the human condition, this avant-star continues to rise.

Review: Although Sinkane is often regarded as a means for mainman Ahmed Gallab to reconcile the places he's found himself since birth, be they London, Sudan, Utah or Brooklyn, it's just as easily recongisable as a medium for him to channel a luminous pop sensiblity and a rare touch with a melody. The time this mercurial figure has served as a touring musician with both Yeasayer and Caribou should offer some hint at the global aesthetic of Sinkane's music as the breezily irresistible lilt of Mean Love. Yet what's most surprising is simply how memorable these songs are; whether deploying pedal steel-tinged country, Afrobeat or '70s style soul, the voice of Sinkane shines through, and it's a beguiling one to behold.
