Punk/Hardcore
Five More Years (3:22)
On The Streets (2:50)
Review: The year 1982 can definitely be regarded as a vital one for the working-class Oi-punk movement. One that saw the release of debut full-lengths from the likes of the abrasive Blitz, and the somewhat underappreciated The 4 Skins, who were endlessly plagued by a myriad of line-up shifts. By the time their second full-length, A Fistful of...4-Skins arrived, the group were already onto line-up number four (no pun intended), and this time period is where the 'Five More Years' 7" single rears its skinhead from. Topped with the anthemic opening track from the album, and tailed with the CD reissue bonus cut, 'On The Streets', this sampler/taster/snapshot/teaser/whatever else you'd like to consider it, serves as a perfect piece of oi-punk memorabilia and entry point for those who don't mind doing some of their homework in reverse. These recordings are also notable for being some of the sole studio pieces from The Last Resort vocalist, Roi Pearce, who would serve with the skins for only the one full-length, and subsequent From Chaos To 1984 live album released the following year as swansong.

Review: A Flock of Seagulls may be best known for their hit song 'I Ran (So Far Away)' but the band's influence on synthpop and new wave, outside of that claim to fame, is actually much greater. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1982, features the iconic track as well as other memorable cuts such as 'Space Age Love Song' and 'Wishing', adding extra far-out elements to the formula already cut out by The Cure. The band's distinctive hairstyle, featuring asymmetrical cuts and a gravity-defying swoop, became known as the "Flock of Seagulls haircut," even refernced in the film 'Pulp Fiction'. Cleopatra US's reissue of the album is a reminder of the band's lasting impact on 80s pop culture.

Brown Sugar (4:29)
Dance Monkey (3:35)
Review: Neo-soul chanteuse Bette Smith is an upcoming talent who lends her tones to the blistering blues guitar work of Kirk Flecther here. The pair take on a cover of The Rolling Stones' classic tune 'Brown Sugar' and do it with real gusto. The drums smash hard, the guitar riffs are big and angular and the vocals re delivered in sleazy fashion. The Tone's quirky pop dance hit 'Dance Monkey' then gets covered don the flip and turned into a psyched out bluesy guitar number with big vocals. It's a unique rework that makes this a collectible 7".

Review: Biz Markie was one of the true titans of the early East Coast hip hop scene - a staple of Marley Marl's Cold Chillin' label with a cheeky demeanour which showed even the toughest hip-hop didn't have to be moody. 'Just A Friend' originally dropped in 1989 and became a mainstream hit in the US, breaking Markie to the world and ensuring the success of his second LP, The Biz Never Sleeps. Nearly a year since he passed away, Cleopatra have revisited one of his most enduring classics and given it a fresh airing on this tidy 7". Just A Friend (4:00)
Just A Friend (instrumental) (4:00)
Review: Highly collectible 7" vinyl from the dearly departed East Coast rap icon, Biz Markie! This re-cut version of Markie's classic ode to unrequited love has been remixed and remastered to sound better than ever. Released in 1989, far before the concept of the "friendzone" had crystallised and become a popular meme, we can hear its nascent stirrings in this subversion of original-era hip-hop, in which Markie crudely and comedically spans disgruntled, dejected raps and twinging croons, all expressive of the pain of rejection.

Review: Theatrical rock icon Arthur Brown's Monster's Ball is a ghoulish masterpiece that arrives just in time for Halloween. Brown himself is joined on the album by a list of top-draw collaborators including The Stooges' James Williamson, Gong's Steve Hillage, Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice, Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner and R&B superstar Shuggie Otis. There is a mix of great cover versions here, as well as a new version of Brown's own 'Fire' tune plus plenty of newly-penned hits. It all adds up to a thrilling rock album high on drama and theatre.

Review: Captain Beyond may not be the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to supergroups, but let's break the elements down before rushing to judgment. Rod Evens, formerly of Deep Purple, Bobby Caldwell, once the Johnny Winter drummer, Iron Butterfly axeman Larry Reinhardt, and Lee Dorman - who was the bassist in that band - coming together to make outside the box guitar-fuelled sounds.

OK, so we're definitely talking about the specialist end of supergroups, but still, the moving parts here are nothing short of impressive. Forming in 1971, and releasing three records through to 1977, this album captures their essence and innovative abilities, melding hard rock, progressive, jazz fusion and space rock without coming across as self-indulgent or overblown. Hardly the easiest thing to pull off when you think about it.

Review: In celebration of the group's newest album, Blue Exposure, a sequel to their 1980 masterpiece Red Exposure, Chrome proudly present a special double album reissue of the latter, original project. Long regarded as not only one of the best albums of the band's stellar catalog but also one of the most groundbreaking musical achievements of the 80s, Chrome's debut album influenced a generation of electronic, post-rock and experimental artists, predicting and inspiring the many thought-to-be-inventors of the sound(s), such as Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. This version includes an entire bonus LP of rare "lost tracks", recorded in the same year as the originals. By far the most arresting cuts include 'Eyes On Mars' and 'Static Gravity', which effortlessly flaunt the band's melding of seemingly contradictory poles: the double-time groove of post-punk and the halfstep pace of dub, echoing the dizzying variety of influences that went into this electric, feline, crepulscular album.

Review: The long-awaited reissue of the debut album from French goth rock outfit, Corpus Delicti, finally arrives to shatter the hopes of Discogs flippers still standing by their 700 quid price-tags. Restoring the original artwork created by the band as well as an insert sporting all of the lyrics; there's never been a more ample opportunity to rediscover a macabre, post-punk classic, teeming with coldwave atmospherics, frosted, jangling guitar work, and ethereal, cavernous production which casts a lysergic despondency over the sonics, at times warring between serene acceptance and jittering, punk-laden despair. It's almost bizarre to process how three decades has done little to dilute the potency of this melting pot project, feeling incredibly of its time while forward thinking in its compositional dynamism.

Review: Elevenses by Daevid Allen Weird Quartet is a psychedelic masterpiece that transcends traditional genre boundaries with its mesmerizing blend of electric guitars, synthesisers and electronic swirls. Led by the visionary founder of Gong, the quartet delivers a captivating sonic journey that defies categorization, evoking hints of rock, jazz, and krautrock. The album's tracks, though diverse in sound and structure, maintain a cohesive atmosphere, blending classic vibes with modern electronic elements. Allen's genius shines through in the seamless integration of disparate musical elements, from Ginger Baker-esque drums and grooving Hammond organ to Allen's distinct voice. Very much its own unique sonic universe.

Review: Here's a classic live album from British punk heroes The Damned, captured in full flight at Woolwich Coronet on July 11 1985. Wrongly credited to a gig at Santa Monica Civic when it was originally released back in 1997, the facts have since been set straight but whatever the case, this is the band at their best. There's all the best bits of their back catalogue and even some choice covers such as the Electric Prunes' ever-classic 'I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night' and Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' - and that's just the icing on top of a set brimming with kick ass punk rock.

Review: 'Neat Neat Neat' might have only been the second single released by The Damned, but its timeless longevity as an essential punk staple has seen it appear in episodes of The Simpsons and The Boys while Edgar Wright would give the track yet another lease on life by using it to score the intense opening chase sequence in 2017's Baby Driver. That's before even mentioning the vastly differing artists it has influenced with everyone from My Chemical Romance to Elvis Costello taking a stab. Pressed to artwork complimenting purple wax, this 7" offers a slice of cuts captured during a set in Mulhouse, France in 1994, with the classic single on the A-side, while the flip boasts a dynamic yet bizarre bevvy of covers, from the likes of iconic pop duo The Righteous Brothers ('You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin') to 60's mods The Craig ('I Must Be Mad') to Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line'.

This vibrantly coloured 7" captures a handful of cuts from a 1994 live performance in Mulhouse, France, boasting the aforementioned single on the A-side with a curious selection of covers on the flip, ranging from Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line' to 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' from The Righteous Brothers and even a rendition of 60s mod originals The Craig's 'I Must Be Mad' lobbed in for good measure.

No sign of 'Eloise' or 'Grimy Fiendish' here though - this all about genre-defining hits like 'Love Song', 'Neat Neat Neat', 'New Rose' and 'Smash It Up', with a heap of perfectly suited and totally unlikely cover versions, from 'Pretty Vacant' to 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'I Walk The Line'. All on nice coloured vinyl, too, it stands as a testament to The Damned's storytelling prowess, leaving audiences enthralled and craving more from this enigmatic ensemble.

Review: Around the mid-nineties, pioneering gothic punks The Damned would see a resurgence in interest thanks to both Guns N Roses covering 'New Rose' for their The Spaghetti Incident? covers LP, as well as The Offspring's rendition of 'Smash It Up' being included on the Batman Forever soundtrack. These simultaneous introductions to a younger audience (whilst possibly also a reminder to forgetful fans), coincided with the band's second reformation, where they boasted the short-lived line up of Dave Vanian and Rat Scabies joined by Kris Dollimore (The Godfathers), Moose (New Model Army), and Alan Lee Shaw (Maniacs). Shadowed Tales From Mulhouse captures this iteration of the band during a 1994 live show in Mulhouse, France, where they would road-test cuts from the following year's Not Of This Earth, including 'Testify', 'Shut It', and the gloomy title-track, while also dusting off plenty of essentials from their back catalogue from 'Neat Neat Neat' to 'Noise Noise Noise' to a cover of their Sex Pistols peers' 'Pretty Vacant'.

Now reissued after its unanimous hailing as a pioneering moment in metal's fusion with breaks and experimental electronic, this version of Danzig's 'Blackacidevil' sees a complete remastering and revamping. Review: Originally unveiled in 1999, Danzig's sixth studio album certainly had pretty big ideas behind it. As Glenn Danzig said at the time of its release, this was the band's first LP to involve digitally recorded voices. The frontman and founder also attempted to distill the best parts of the preceding five records, and the acclaimed Thrall EP, while adding some new "flavours" to the mix.

So, what does that sound like? Well, it's a big room-filling, industrial-edged metal powerhouse of a release that can easily satisfy both fans of more mainstream guitar tones and those who really never want to compromise at all, and demand nothing but raw, unfettered, bleeding edge noises that refuse to desist. Simply put, it's a pretty timeless work that fully deserves this re-release.

Review: As part of a large and comprehensive reissues campaign of the work of both horror-punk pioneers Misfits and their most eminent creative brain Glenn Danzig, this reissue of Danzig's Black Aria should be of special note. Danzig's first ever album as a solo artist following prior forays into everything from punk to metal to industrial, it was first released in 1992, again breaking away from prior genre explorations. This time, Danzig would focus his efforts on contemporary, gothic-metallic classical music - though it's largely an instrumental album, Black Aria deals thematically with the Biblical fall from grace undergone by Lucifer, after which grace and sin were implied to have became confused, and hell on earth unleashed.

Review: Th eighth full-length from former Misfits horror-crooner Glenn Danzig's solo project/band served as their first LP to not carry a number, following 777: I Luciferi which angled itself as the closing work of that initial seven volume sequence. Originally released in 2004, Circle Of Snakes continues the descent of Danzig into a rawer, more abrasive form of metallic leaning gothic hard rock, with a notable lowering of vocals in the mix in order to elevate the churning jaggedness of the instrumental rumble. Continuing to eschew the more industrial programming of previous Danzig entries and echoing the stripped back approach of 'Danzig 1' and the increased heaviness of the aforementioned Luciferi, the album would also mark the first appearance of Tommy Victor of Prong on guitars, helping to aid the audible malevolence and ultimately leading to one of the strongest contributions to Danzig's latter day 21st century output.

Review: Released first round time in 2002, Danzig's 777: I Luciferi is a step away from the programmed industrial influences of the two albums that preceded it in favour of a return to the metallic, rawer sound that helped Glenn Danzig stand apart from his horror shadowed punk beginnings. Now, more than 20 years on, this reissue is a reminder of Luciferi as a high watermark in the later work of one of the most controversial figures in metal, punk and hard rock.

Review: Originally released in 2002, 777: I Luciferi is quite often regarded as one of the most unique and heavy projects of the former Misfits frontman's tenure. Shying away from the more industrial programming of his two previous endeavors in order to full re-capture the raw metallic audible aesthetics that had initially helped Danzig stand apart from his horror-punk beginnings, cuts like the beastly 'Wicked Pussycat' or sultry darkness of 'Naked Witch' still resonate with a macabre coolness exclusive to our Glenn. More than two decades on, this reissue serves as reminder of Luciferi as a major highpoint in the latter work of one of the most singular, controversial figures in hard rock, punk and metal to this day.

Review: 'Who Killed Marilyn?' is an early track written by Glenn Danzig when he was with the Misfits. Originally recorded in 1979 with the Misfits but due to financial issues with pressing vinyl copies at the time, was then re-recorded again in 1991 and released under Glenn Danzig's name. An important song in the history of the legendary figure, this is the first time this single has been issued on the CD format. Also included is an additional version of each track remixed and remastered by Danzig himself.

Review: The long-gestating follow up to 1992's initial instalment, Black Aria II would finally arrive in 2006 after years of discussion from Misfits/Samhain horror-punk visionary Glenn Danzig, and further his exploration into the cavernous realms of modern classical dark ambience. Conceptually based around Lillith, the first wife of Adam, the material here is far more minimalist and starker than its gothic predecessor, while utilising a more varied array of instruments on top of the pre-established organ and strings, with more Eastern sonic influences to conjure a mercurial vision independent of the preceding volume. Complete with eerie chimes, chants and esoteric lamentations, the project marks one of Danzig's most intriguing works when compared to, say, his Elvis covers compilations, and offers a transportive, biblical, haunting narrative delivered almost exclusively via instrumental atmospherics and insidious gloom.

Review: Dead or Alive's 1985 classic 'You Spin Me Round' is one of few quintessential charting darkwave cuts from the 80s and this reissue of the single is a celebration of its infectious energy. As many will recall, Pete Burns' flamboyant vocals are set against driving beats and knocky synth riffs, as the song famously compares the effect of a dizzying new liaison to the spin of a 12". The extended mix found here gives listeners even more of what they love about the song, while the EP's timely follow-up songs like 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' provide an enchanting, atmospheric context.

The rare tracks start with 'Dreaming Of Your Cars', post punk groove with a slick rhythm section and tight bassline driving it along and getting you in the groove. 'Love Story' features superbly nimble playing and crashing drums that again straighten your back and get you marching before 'X Disco' and 'To The Shore' close out in upbeat then more mournful fashion.

Review: The 1993 debut full-length from "Satanic industrial metal" envelope pushers, The Electric Hellfire Club, was a perfect storm of sex, drugs, and serial killer infatuation dressed up in gothic, metallic, near techno mayhem. Following mastermind Thomas Thorn's departure from My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, 'Burn, Baby, Burn!', would serve as the birth of edgy ideals, delivered with sonic abandon and tongue located firmly in cheek, while samples of low budget horror movies as well as invoking Satanic church founder Anton LaVey, served as the hysteric cherry on top of the dodgy sundae, designed to provoke and bemuse in equal measure. LaVey would later go on to ordain Thorn as a priest of the Satanic church, but that's a story for another time.

Their hardcore sound started belting out from Edinburgh in 1979 and by the time they released their second album Troops Of Tomorrow three years later they were UK-wide legends. Of all the tracks on the album, 'USA' is one of the sharpest, calling out the superpower in no uncertain times set to a pile-driving hardcore beat. The band are known for their blues-based hard rock sound and their hit songs 'Slow Ride' and 'Fool for the City' which are both featured here. Slow Ride: Live In Concert gives us undistilled Foghat, recorded and filmed live in Texas in 1999, just before Dave Peverett's death in 2000 at the age of 56. The power and drive of these classic songs come ringing through and are a celebration of Foghat's vision and talent, many years since the band exploded onto the world in 1970. Pressed on orange marbled vinyl., this is a must have for fans of the band considering the time of when the concert date was in the band's history.

They are a rather obscure outfit, nonetheless, who make music for dance floras but with a really twisted and dark edge and plenty of distortion. Review: Canadian electro-industrialists FLA really do understand what consistency is. Having put out 12 official studio albums since their inception in 1986, they have remained at the top of their niche game since first landing on the scene, making tracks with this dystopian dancefloor energy, rooted in the cold and unfeeling factories of the future and deceptive humanism of warm synth work.

Nerve War was their now-legendary first mixtape, released the year they got together, and it set the bar so high its any wonder any of what followed managed to live up to these standards. Suffice to say, the fact subsequent stuff did is testament to the band's genius. Presenting everything from strange and unnerving sonic collages ('Thy Glory'), to gritty slo-mo builders ('To The World') and grand sci-fi themes with shades of neo-Gothicism ('Front Line').

It's a suitably spectacular sequel to the first part of the Black Aria series that was originally released in 2006 and is seen as one of his most audacious ever works. It finds Danzig extends his band's already ambitious, classically-themed project with this time the infamous Lilith, the first wife of Adam, as the main theme. The cover is a super one that features an illustration by the well known Marvel comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz. All in all, a vital reissue of a metal classic.

Review: Sometimes a great 7" is just about having those essential tune within easy reach, and tunes don't come more essential than this. When we look back to the breakthrough years of hip-hop, two of the first tracks that spring to mind are 'White Lines' and 'The Message', where Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five proved there was a wealth of creative potential for the burgeoning rap movement. 'White Lines' is the all-out party monster sampling Liquid Liquid and dropping some insanely catchy hooks throughout. 'The Message' is quite simply one of the most important tracks of any genre, ever. Pristine electro synth lines and a hard-bitten look at street level reality, expressed with such poetic grace and unflinching honesty, it still leaves its mark decades later. Now, you can cop these two iconic gems on a none-funkier purple 7".

Now adding to the Cleopatra catalogue, Wobble returns to drop a full-on psychic battering ram (and play on the name of a ubiquitous cosmological classic by Stephen Hawking), his Brief History Of Now. It's a dystopian album full of buzzing urgency and as ever comes packed with Wobble's latter-day spoken word segments, which rail against the contradictions of modern life. Co-written, produced and performed with Jon Klein of Siouxsie & The Banshees fame, it's a thoroughly varied project, speaking of liberation, demonic entities, and karmic retribution - somtimes in dub, sometimes not - and even throwing in a curveball cover of Wire's 'I Am The Fly'.

He's more readily associated with dub and international musical fusions than rock, but on this new album for Cleopatra he's returned his focus to the spiky energy bursts of his earlier work with Public Image Ltd. Produced with Jon Klein of Siouxsie & The Banshees, A Brief History Of Now covers a lot of ground and revels in allowing all kinds of influences in without losing focus. This is a set of kick ass rock tunes first and foremost, but there's space for subtlety and humour to make sure you know it's Wobble at the controls.

Coming, as it did, after the two albums from the band, it's the perfect half way house between their powerful, guitar-powered sound and the futuristic synthesiser waves that informed New Order not long after. Plus, it's a heartbreakingly brilliant song with lyrics that have spoken to subsequent generations without fail.

Includes the band's best known composition 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and a superb non-album B-side in 'Leaders Of Men', plus an extended mix of the A-side. Most music fans and their mothers will have had the former track firmly implanted into their grey matter by now, but it's the B-side that really gets the true-heads going, channelling a massive, cortex-cracking sound that is closer to punk than post. Boy, did Joy Division have a toothy side.

Review: British synth wave duo The KVB has always had a psychedelic tint to their sound, so it's no surprise to hear them embarking on a project like Artefacts for this new album on Cleopatra. The pair have dug back through heir record collections and settled on a grip of tracks to cover in their distinctive style. The selections are varied, from outright freakniks 13th Floor Elevators to Them, The Troggs and The Pretty Things, but as you might well expect none of the choices have been obvious ones. As a result, and given the strong artistic stamp of The KVB's shadowy synth sound, this is solid a KVB record as any of their original output and brilliant with it.

Review: Leather Strip is the nom de plume of Danish artist Claus Larsen, who first rose to prominence in the EBM and industrial boom of the early 90s. Science For The Satanic Citizen was one of his earliest releases, originally out in 1990 and featuring such cheery titles as 'Zyklon B' and 'What's Hell Really Like?' The music isn't as forbidding as the presentation might seem, coming on like the Ministry and Nine Inch Nails sound of the era when the focus was on gothic synth lines and slamming drum machines, but not quite the sheet metal distortion that would become de rigour further into the 90s.
