Fall In Love Again (instrumental) (4:53)
Review: Alanna Royale presents her debut single for Colemine, 'Fall In Love Again', in the wake of her upcoming LP. Produced by Kelly Finnigan of Monophonics fame, this entropic single is tinged with the retro fervour of slow-jam funk and soul, channelling the pains of a tried relationship.

Fall In Love Again (4:55)
Fall In Love Again (instrumental) (4:53)
Review: With a full-length LP on the horizon, Nashville's own Alanna Royale has perfected a concoction of traditional 70s soul instrumental features with silky modern R&B vocals - and it works like you wouldn't believe. Everything from the classic trumpet-led grooves to the cover art is authentically soul, a long stray away from the band's grunge beginnings. If there's one way to start a revolution in your city, it's to create an incredible new sound like this. You will want to look for a rise in traditional soul elements in R&B and hip-hop over the next few years - if it explodes then you know who did it first.

Review: Harlem-raised Gloria Barnes got her big break after a couple of her early recordings became big hits on the UK Northern Soul scene. Her sole album, 1971's Uptown, has long been an in-demand item amongst collectors, regularly fetching four-figure sums when copies do occasionally change hands. Here the album gets reissued for the first time, allowing those without money to burn to enjoy its rich and evocative mix of Northern style dancefloor stompers, heart aching torch songs and downtempo soul shufflers. The quality of Barnes' vocals naturally impresses throughout, but the musical backing - provided at different points by the Hustlers, the Disciples and Ohio Players - is every bit as beguiling.

Review: Black Market Brass are back on Colemine with a third full length that once again finds them offering up an all new take on Afrobeat that mixes the traditional sounds of the genre with heavy, hypnotic and sci-fi influences. Saxophonist Cole Pulice has said of the record: "We didn't leave the traditional Afro-beat sound behind, but we did allow ourselves to pull from different places with less hesitation." The nine piece album was recorded live to tap which lends it a lived-in feel and mixes organic instrumentation with heavily processed synthesizers, harsh glitches, fuzzed out guitars and raw percussion. It is a truly arresting and infectious listen.

Tiger Trot (3:10)
Enter (4:31)
Review: Leroi's back! Well... He never went away. As a studiosmith and designer his fingerprints are all over many of Colemine's on-point curations, but now we're about to enjoy a whole new tonne of Conroy as he prepares to drop his debut album. These two heavyweight instrumentals set the scene perfectly; "Tiger Trot" looks east for melodic inspiration with a touch of New Orleans in the swampy sweaty delivery. "Enter" hits with more of a jazzier, freeform air as we spiral into trumpet dizziness into deep bluesy introspection and some damn fine breaks from fellow Colemine consistency Rob Houk. Only 300 copies pressed.

Review: The Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio are masters fo the lost art of music that really makes you feel good without being cheap or cheesy. Making their sound so good is a careful mix of 60s organ jazz a la Jimmy Smith, some soulful strutting that Booker T would be proud of and plenty of sprinkles of Motion or Stax magic. The band is lead by Delvon Lamarr, a self-taught virtuosic musician who light sup each and every track, much like the warm, whirring organs that bring the funk. Expert drums and conversational playing styles all help make this one a real stand out.

Hot on the heels of 2021's widely celebrated I Told You So, Lamarr and his band are back once more with Cold As Weiss. As well as the sweet organ flexing, Jimmy James holds the groove down on drums while Daniel Weiss chops it up on the guitar. Seriously smooth and funky as hell, Lamarr brings it full force on this latest crucial cut.

Review: If you're the fan of the kind of organ-heavy funk made famous by the likes of Jimmy Smith and the Meters, we'd recommend this superb set from Seattle threesome Devon Lamarr Organ Trio. The outfit's third studio album in total (the first landed in 2015), Cold as Weiss naturally acts as a showcase for the virtuoso Hammond B3 playing of Delvon Lamarr, with the talented organist blessing each track with fluid, energetic solos and catchy riffs. His companions Jimmy James (guitar) and Daniel Weiss (drums) provide superb support; throw warming, weighty bass into the mix and you have an inspired collection of deep funk, soul-jazz, jazz-funk and blues instrumentals mostly made with dancefloors in mind.

Review: Jason Gray of Polyrythmics fame was the engineer on this tune from the Devon Lamar Organ Trio. It is the last one from the session to be pressed to limited edition - and pink - 45rpm and comes in two parts. 'Jimmy's Groove (part 1)' is a super funky jam, with brilliant organ work as you would expect, and tight stick work that rides up and down and is backed by funky and knotted bass. There is a playful and psyched-out 60s feel that carries over to the flipside and 'Jimmy's Groove (part 2).' Here there are more breakout organ solos and the grooves just keep on rolling.

Review: We're not sure of the back-story of Devlon Lamarr's eponymous trio, but this debut album for Colemine is an absolute killer. Lamarr is a virtuoso organist, and it's jammed-out Hammond organ and electric piano solos that naturally take centre stage throughout. That said, both drummer David McGraw and guitarist Jimmy James play their part throughout, with the former's ambidextrous fills and the latter's raw licks also catching the ear throughout. Musically, the tracks range from Meters-style heavy funk and lounge soul workouts to a range of cuts more heavily influenced by the blues of John Lee Hooker and the similarly instrumental brilliance of Booker T and the MGs.

And to be honest, we can't thank whichever ex-lover it was who upset this Seattle seven piece enough. Because we are getting some serious soul gold right here! Once again on Colemine, once again rich in harmony, once again with the big instrumentation and enough spring in the guitars and horns for big dance moves; The Dip are fast establishing themselves as a serious player in contemporary funk and they've even thrown in an instrumental to show how tight they are.

Review: 'Dojo Cuts: Pieces' is a retrospective of the Australian funk and soul band's best works, harking all the way back to the six-piece's formation in 2009. Emphasising confidence, rhythmic tightness and unisons above all else, there are selections here ranging from their powerful debut album 'Take From Me' to their latest project 'Rome'. This is a project that flaunts what the band do best; expand outwards from the can't-go-wrong Atlantic/Stax Records template into something greater, not to mention adding a contemporary production sheen.

A Return To Normal (2:49)
Review: Mind On Madrid has more than a hint of bossa nova in its grooves. It is two track 45rpm of breezy, carefree sounds that empty your mind and fill it with rising joy. Designed as a soundtrack to the exploration of a new city, it's a musical diary of discovery and surprise. The title track sways and swirls its way into your affections with its flute leads and woodblock swing. 'A Return To Normal' on the flip has a more languorous and lazy feel. The strings are drawn out and swoon, the rhythms slow and comforting. Lovely stuff to key summer alive as the night draw in.

Young Blood
Review: Colemine Records return with a Bay Area funk transmission that will hit you right in the gut! With numbers that almost reach twenty when playing live, San Francisco act Droptones are very much the exception to the 'too many cooks' platitude and they kill it on the record too! There are plenty of groups out there claiming to play heavy funk and retro soul, but not so many possess a vocal section that lives and breathes blue eyed authenticity like Droptones do. Put simply Tiffany Austin and Lilan Kane own the A Side cover of Hayes & Porter's "Don't Get Caught" whilst "Young Blood" has that good groove that the funk floors love.

Inspired by records like Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You, this is a lovely affair with heart swelling vocals, 60s sounding hooks and nice rolling rhythm that are perfectly gentle as background music, but also striking when you give them your full attention.

His debut album is on the way but before that comes a teaser single "Since I Don't Have You Anymore" that is pure quality. Review: Last year Kelly Finnigan - son of storied Hammond organist Mike Finnigan - released his debut album, "The Tales People Tell", a gloriously authentic and wholehearted tribute to 1960s soul and funk. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. A-side "I Called You Baby" is an unflinchingly heavy deep funk workout rich in bustling breakbeats, memorable guitar riffs, sustained organ chords and fiery horn riffs, all topped off with a brilliant lead vocal from Finnigan. On flipside "Impressions of You", Finnigan switches mood, adding another heartfelt, passionate vocal to a slow, loved-up backing track that's every bit as impressive as the club-ready A-side.

It is a superbly velvety sound that is both easy to listen to yet hugely emotive. Vocally it celebrates love and connection and is a real heart melter. A nostalgic trip through 1950s and 1960s style gospel-based rhythms and blues, soul, funk and doo-wop, the album's greatest strength - aside from the authenticity of the music and production of course - is the group's incredible vocals. Brilliantly arranged harmonies play a big part, though the lead vocals (shared between all four members) are little less than stunning.

Review: Last year, NYC based revivalist "gospel quartet" group the Harlem Gospel Travelers finally made their vinyl debut album after five years wowing audiences on the live circuit. 12 months later, they're finally ready to release their first full-length excursion.

Review: Ikebe Shakedown is a collective of hyper-skilled instrumentalists who have been pushing boundaries for a decade now. That draw on raw and emotive 70s soul, psyche-sounds and Western soundtracks, and distil all that on this new red hot and pink 7" on Colemine. There is real majesty and joy in this tracks, which were recorded by Ikebe's bassist, Vince Chiarito, at Hive Mind Recording. Lush textures, nagging bass riffs and impressive playing chops all feature across a pair of tracks that very much tell a story that will have you coming back for more.

Waiting For The Storm (3:58)
Review: It is always a highly anticipated event when Ikebe Shakedown drop new music and that is the case here once more. First up they tackle a legendary Ennio Morricone track as the A-side. Their take on 'Adonai' retains all the Western soundtrack charm of the original but with added horns, plenty of filthy but funky guitar riffs and a driving rhythm section sure to make its mark on the club. 'Waiting For The Storm' is a brand new cut that slows things down on the flip with jumbled drums and loose claps making for a more sensuous sound.

Review: This is a limited gatefold translucent blue swirl vinyl and an indie exclusive version of super soul group The Ironsides's new album. The band teased it with a 7" on their home label Colemine back in October which more than got us excited. The whole record was laid down at Transistor Sound Studios in the North Bay Area of California and is full of more of the life-enriching sounds you might already know and love the band for. It is a great fusion of classic psych-soul sounds with sweeping orchestral arrangements and is inspired by library music and soundtracks from the 60s and 70s. Guess including Colemine artists Kelly Finnigan and Monophonics appears to help make this most lovely of records even more special.

Boy, how the world has changed dance then, Anyway, their sound has not and is just as life-enriching as ever across these two new tunes. First up is the glorious 'The Changing Light' with its lush sounds and catchy melodies and then on the flip is 'Sommer' which is just as able to melt your heart. The good news is they also have a new album coming on the label either next year or the year after so keep those eyes and ears peeled.

Review: Oliver James came up in a family of musicians and has been performing most of his life. His has soul sounds deep in his heart and always manages to translate them when he performs. Here he makes his debut on Colemine Records and it nods to all his influences from gospel, blues, and R&B from the Stax era. He has previously worked as a songwriter for Rick Hall, but steps out now to start his solo career and does so with style. 'One And Only' is a perfectly blue eyed and heart aching soul sound, with rousing horns and impassioned vocals over a driving rhythm section. We can't wait for more.

Durand Jones & The Indications - "Smile" (3:46)
The Indications - "Tuck 'N' Roll" (2:49)
Review: Authentic soul business from Bloomington newbies The Indications brought to you by the good people at Colemine Records. Teaming up with Durand Jones for the A-side, "Smile" is a powerful preachy cut that digs deep into the classic funk mentality while sitting neatly upside the grills of Aloe Blacc or Gnarls Barkley. "Tuck N Roll", meanwhile, is a Meters-level slice of smouldering instrumental funk with big cymbal splashes and a blissful balance of Rhodes and guitar. Spotless.

Review: If you're looking for a soulful slow-jam with a powerful message, look no further than Durand Jones & The Indications' 'Power To The People'. This 7" contains a powerful, warm, synth-heavy anthem that celebrates the spirit of resistance and collective solidarity; a reminder of a force we have lost sight of in the modern individualist era. Durand Jones & The Indications are the rabble-rousers in question: the Bloomington, Indiana band mix soul and r&b for a convincing take on the nascent soul revival here.

Their latest "45" boasts one of the album's standout moments, "Morning In America", a weary but impassioned commentary on Trump's United States that features evocative strings, laidback 60s soul grooves and a stunning lead vocal from Durand Jones. It comes backed by previously unheard cut "Cruisin' To The Park", a lusciously sugary, heartfelt and loved-up affair where drummer Aaron Frazer handles lead vocals. Review: Featuring two tracks that from Durand Jones & The Indications' third LP, this new 45 is a honeyed slice of retro-soul with pop leanings, as the band continues to mine the '60s and '70s for inspiration. Front to back, the record retains a healthy balance between the invention of new sounds and the sticking to strengths. The A-side 'Ride Or Die' casts the spotlight squarely on drummer Aaron Frazer, who also just so happens to have one of Earth's silkiest falsettos, while Jones' vocals lead the way through the sultry 'More Than Ever’.

Review: Colemine Records very much transports us back to another time with this latest lovely offering. It is a deep dive into the work of sophisticated lounge-pop as might be played during dinner at a trendy society ball back in the 60s. It comes from Durand Jones and The Indications and one track off they third album Too Many Tears. It's is one of heartbreak and is lit up by the gorgeous falsetto of Aaron Frazrs on the A-side, who tells s tale of betrayal. On the flip is a sweet soul sound soaked up by new school fans with an alternative indie an experimental sound from Y La Bomba led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Luz Elena Mendoza.

Review: The A-side of this new 45 from Colemine can be described as sophisticated lounge-pop for dinnertime at a hip debutante ball in 1962. Featuring a track off of Durand Jones & The Indications' third LP, 'Too Many Tears' depicts a story of heartbreak, with Aaron Frazer's silky falsetto mournfully painting a scene of betrayal. The B-side has gone on to become a theme tune for a whole new generation of sweet soul lovers: featuring Y La Bomba, a Latin indie alternative/experimental band led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Luz Elena Mendoza, the track is an homage to lowriders across the globe. A heater of a 45. Let's cruise....

This band is a regular on the Colemine label and they do it all from slow motion seductiveness to blue eyed soul and sophisticated lounge pop. What they have unearthed is a bonus cut from the session they had in Los Angeles during the recording of 'Rockstone.' Fans of Thomas will know what to expect by now - super sweet and authentic Jamaican vibes steeped in island music traditions. The forward-facing sounds feature superb songwriting from Tom McDowall. His classic debut album with The Volcanoes (a collective of Southern California's most dignified musicians) is a case in point Now reissued by Colemine Records, it wears its devotion to Jamaica music on its sleeve. Review: Few bands live up to their name in the way Jungle Fire do; fusing Cumbia, Afrobeat and trad funk, each JF jam blazes the floor with real power. "Firewalker" is the buzz-cut here, swaggering with Afro-disco confidence; it's all about the epic horn Q&A and cutlass-sharp guitar lick. "Chalupa" takes a deeper route into the dancefloor by way of a classic soul riff that sways to-and-fro before breaking down into a more staccato rhythm. Watch out for the pay-off... Those jazz horns are a delight to behold!
