Review: It's autumn 2017 and one thing is for sure - people are still allowed in concert halls and theatres, which are still hosting performances. Around 12 months ago, music had lost a true legend in the form of Leonard Cohen, and Swedish folk pop heroes First Aid Kit decided to pay tribute to the late-great artist's work with a show at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
Skip forward to today and this album, from that show, is as close as most will get to a theatre for some time, never mind Scandinavia. As the tracklist suggests, there's a range of Cohen's catalogue being interpreted, and we really do mean interpreted, with help from accompanying players Annika Norlin, Frida Hyvonen, Jesper Lindell, Maja Francis and Loney, Dear. Which was the only logical approach - recreation rather than replication is the most fitting tribute to such an enigmatic and unique artist.

Review: Here we go again, then. Studio album number eight from Ray LaMontagne is doing him no disservice in terms of that formidable reputation. Taking on the roles of producer, engineer, singer, songwriter and every-instrumentalist for the purposes of this record, words like 'auteur' certainly make sense when talking about 'Monovision'.Enough preamble, onto the main event - 'Monovision' is the perfect reflection of a musician in peak form. When that iconic, throaty voice roars out over the slight-of-hand acoustic guitar plucks of opener 'Roll Me Mama, Roll Me', you're immediately captivated. Tracks like 'Strong Enough' set the tempo much higher, stomping a way through old timey rock 'n' roll tones, standing in complete contrast to the tender refrains and more mournful (or at least reflective) atmospheres of 'Summer Clouds' and 'We'll Make It Through'. To be honest, we're barely worthy.

Review: There's something unarguably pure about Declan McKenna's 'Zeros'. It's the kind of honest album you would hope to get from someone whose big break came from the grass roots friendly Emerging Talent Competition at Glastonbury Festival in 2015, a year after his anti-FIFA World Cup protest song, 'Brazil', caused an online stir.
Now signed with the not-so-small fry Colombia Records, he takes the attitude of that earlier work, and the expert folk-rock songcraft, and scales up to fittingly stadium-filling proportions. Tracks like "Twice Your Size" showcase the artist's more ferocious, riff-heavy side, while the upbeat opener "You Better Believe" is a smile-inducing slice of sharp indie pop, "Emily" reveals a penchant for funky, psyche-tinged tones and efforts such as "Sagittarius A" offer breezy, playful sing-along moments.

'Wiped Out' takes their R&B-tinged indie-pop sound, to a beachside destination where the sun-kissed retro-pop of Phoenix melds with both quasi-surf ambience and the midnight R&B of Frank Ocean to result in an atmosphere for daydreaming and nightlife alike. Review: Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan and Soulsavers come together for this new collaborative album on Columbia. The 10-man band recorded the sounds live at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La studio in Malibu, California back at the end of 2019. Their own unique cover of Cat Power's 'Metal Heart?' is the lead single and opening track and from there covers come thick and fast. The great likes of Neil Young, PJ Harvey, Gene Clark, Bob Dylan and Mark Lanegan all pay tribute to and make for a third great outing for Gahan and Machin following 2015's Angels & Ghosts and 2012's The Light The Dead See.

Review: Eating bats, drinking his own pee (while teaching the Motley Crue what's meant by eccentric British debauchery), and, err, co-starring in a reality TV show. Life has been a colourful one for Ozzy Osbourne, and we've not touched upon Black Sabbath. Impossible not to love, in spite of all the Satan summoning (albeit tongue in cheek), it would have been an awkward moment if this return wasn't exceptionally good. Of course it won't be for everyone. Those who aren't fond of dirty metal guts and dark, macabre riffs might want to look elsewhere for their kicks - it's not just "Goodbye" and "Today Is The End" respectively offering those. It's a record filled with plenty of foreboding menace, and we'd expect nothing less. Even so, there's still time for razor wit to shine ("Eat Me") and borderline madness to prevail (the extra-terrestrial themed "Scary Little Green Men"), making for a journey into the mind of a rock genius.
