Review: San Francisco electronic pop outfit Cold Beat make their debut on the ever-impressive DFA, one of the finest imprints in all of synth-dom. And what a triumph it is, polished and sharp and infinitely daring, making for more proof of what fans will have already known based on previous outings, including records on the rightly revered 1980s-inspired Dark Entries label. Think Eurythmics, Depeche Mode and Ladyhawke and you'll be edging toward the right ball park. There are moments of depression and stark moods, for example on "Paper", guitars juxtaposed with keyboards to create the wonderfully contrasting "Prism", and pedal-to-metal pace pushing "Gloves" forward to a destination that's some sort of future read through the past. Don't think that suggests pastiche, though - this is a record very much born from fresh ideas and a desire to explore pastures new.

Review: DFA's album schedule over the coming months makes for interesting reading with the long overdue Factory Floor LP set to be joined by full lengths from Greek producer Larry Gus and hirsute Aussie crooner Surahn. Before all that the label issues Joke in the Hole, the seventh LP of a prolific recording career for Eric Copeland. Returning to DFA for the first time since the classic Black Dice LP Broken Ear Record back in 2005, this new album finds Copeland as inspired as ever, taking an abstract approach to cut n paste electronics that verges on the dizzying at several points. Second track "Grapes" is early an indication of just how disjointed he can get, whilst "Fresh Meats" and "Shoo Ra" sound like vintage Luke Vibert hocked up on cheap whizz.

- 10cm tear at top of sleeve

Despite his self-proclaimed hatred of nightclubs, Sheffield misery-guts Richard "Crooked Man" Barratt is rather good at making dance music. That's not to say that the former Sweet Exorcist and All Seeing I man's second album, "Crooked House", is a riotous romp full of wonky, low-slung, industrial-tinged house and techno slammers, though. While rooted in Yorkshire's traditionally raw, alien, bleep-laden and bass-heavy take on those styles, the album's genius lies in Barratt's ability to write surprisingly soulful, off-kilter songs, co-produced by fellow veterans Mick Ward and David Lewin, and voiced by some seriously talented singers (Amy Douglas and Pete Simpson included). The results are undeniably magical, with "Here On Earth", "Walls", "Take It All Away", "Every Killer Needs a Friend" and trippy "Echo Loves Narcissus" amongst the highlights.

Review: Kick-starting 2016 with style, cult NYC label DFA call upon Montreal-based duo Essaie Pas to deliver an LP of pure sonic vibrations and soothing meditation. The title track itself, "Demain Est Une Autre Nuit", is a definite stand-out thanks to its dreary, lonesome pool of harmonies, but the album develops a more concrete shape with tunes like "Retox" or "Le Port Du Masque Est De Rigeur", both classic coldwave cuts with a nod to electro. Our favourite on here is definitely "Facing The Music", though, an ominous crescendo of hollow bass and dread that falls neatly into the EBM-style techno of "Lights out".

Review: Since the departure of Dominic Butler, Factory Floor's Gabriel Gurnsy and Nik Colk Void has consciously moved away from the Throbbing Gristle/Cabaret Voltaire inspired sound with which they made their name. On 25 25, their third full length, they continue this voyage. While there are occasional reminders of their industrial roots dotted throughout the album, the most obvious influences this time round are acid house and no-nonsense European techno. Their tracks have always been subtly shifting, full-throttle, groove-based affairs, of course, but this time round they seem more intent on sound-tracking breathless, 4am dancefloor moments, rather than showcasing their arty, experimental roots. That all of the eight tracks bang hard is a given.

Review: This self titled debut album from the Factory Floor trio of Nik Void, Gabe Gurnsey and Dominic Butler shows just how far they've come from their early days of scuzzed angst ridden post punk, offering the sort of stripped back manipulation of machinery that makes their live shows so memorable. Ten tracks deep, Factory Floor sees the band turn in eight brand new tracks to complement the two burners previously released on DFA ("Two Different Ways" and "Fall Back") and has them ever more focused on perfecting the hypnotic beat. The opening call to arms "Turn It Up" is the track that makes you realize how appropriate an equation Factory Floor on DFA is and from here Void, Butler and Gurnsey successfully pummel your senses with a succession of burrowing motorik grooves and corrugating synth lines.

Review: Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom have worked together successfully on a number of releases but their most standout work was this album, The Days of Mars. It came on the legendary DFA label and was one of the best of its early era so gets a deserving reissue here, cut at 45rpm no less. The four tracks are fusions of cold wave, ambient, experimental electronic soundscapes and kosmiche. Each one goes long so serves as an escapist and futurist meditation whether dropped into an adventurous DJ set or to get lost in while wearing headphones at home.

Review: The long-awaited second album from Brooklyn indie-dance darlings Holy Ghost!, Dynamics shows the band at their most nagging, hooky and vibrant. As hinted by the summer's most surprising sing-along success "Dumb Disco Ideas", each track is perfectly crafted pop that teeters somewhere between Squeeze and Hot Chip. Highlights include the bold 80s synth hymn "It Must Be The Weather", the weeping guitars and yearning vocals of the Simple Minds-esque "Don't Look Down" and the undiluted synth pop Pet Shop Boys majesty of the finale "Cheap Shots". Perfectly polished and instantly infectious, Holy Ghost! have written an exciting new chapter and it's well worth a read.

Review: While Juan MacLean, LCD Soundsystem's Nancy Whang and Holy Ghost!'s Nick Millhiser have always had one eye on the dancefloor, their albums have tended to be slightly more eccentric and esoteric affairs that lack some of the sparkle associated with their more joyous, club-ready cuts. It's perhaps for this reason that they've spent the last six years releasing DJ-friendly 12" singles, thus avoiding making a new album altogether. In hindsight, it seems a wise choice because "The Brighter The Light" - a compilation of those dancefloor-focused releases shot through with references to various vintage club styles and bottom-end weight to match - is their most vibrant, colourful and enjoyable full-length to date.

Review: After an absence of some five years, The Juan Maclean and Nancy Whang return with In A Dream, their third full-length LP. While previous album The Future Will Come was a fairly angular and grinchy set, In A Dream sees the duo home in on the bouncy, piano-laden, disco and pop-tinged sound that marked out singles such as Happy House as future dancefloor classics. Whang is in particularly good form, writing excellent lyrics that fit her vocal style. MacLean, for his part, provides jaunty backing tracks that find a perfect balance between the organic feel of live instrumentation and the arpeggio-heavy throb of classic synthesizers. The result is a set of smart, attractive and addictive dance-pop tracks guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Review: Anyone lucky enough to have caught James Murphy and his entourage of highly talented musical friends live will attest that it's here LCD Soundsystem truly excel. And whilst this London Sessions album recorded in the aftermath of such a performance at last year's Glastonbury Festival does not replicate such an elation filled experience, the chance to hear some of the band's best tracks recorded live makes this worth investigating. It's basically a showcase for how tight a group of musicians Gavin Russom, Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang are, most notably on "Get Innocuous" where Russom really goes to town on the synths and "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" which gets embellished with a liberal dose of tightness, tautness and spikiness. The band has such an all encompassing back catalogue that you could spend all day dissecting which tracks they should have included here, and it's a mark of the aforementioned tightness that even the somewhat risible "Drunk Girls" sounds markedly improved here.
