Full Grown Man
What I've Lost
Review: After impressing with their 2010 debut on Ghostly International and the debut Visionquest release, Benoit & Sergio transfer to the mighty DFA for their latest offering. In many ways, it's a match made in heaven. Their distinctive sound - a kind of fusion of Kompakt's poppier vocal moments, achingly hip indie-pop and dreamy deep house - is a good fit on DFA. Certainly, there's much to enjoy on the Boy Trouble EP, from the jaunty melancholy of the title track to the introspective warmth of "What I've Lost" and Balearic beauty of "Full Grown Man". Visionquest return the aforementioned favour with a more dancefloor friendly remix, but it's the original tracks that really excel.

Review: Eric Copeland's first album for DFA, 2013's Joke In The Hole, was something of a breakthrough for the eccentric artist. Since then, he's released two albums for L.I.E.S, both of which were notably obtuse in comparison. Black Bubblegum, his second full-length DFA outing, is an altogether cheerier proposition, with Copeland combining his usual abstract, experimental beat-making approach with skewed guitars, quirky instrumentation, wild pop sensibilities and more than a touch of wayward '60s psychedelia. As you'd expect, this kind of zany, lo-fi fusion makes for enjoyable and hugely entertaining listening, with the New York producer seemingly throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the project.

Review: Despite his self-proclaimed hatred of nightclubs, Sheffield misery-guts Richard "Crooked Man" Barratt is rather good at making dance music. That's not to say that the former Sweet Exorcist and All Seeing I man's second album, "Crooked House", is a riotous romp full of wonky, low-slung, industrial-tinged house and techno slammers, though. While rooted in Yorkshire's traditionally raw, alien, bleep-laden and bass-heavy take on those styles, the album's genius lies in Barratt's ability to write surprisingly soulful, off-kilter songs, co-produced by fellow veterans Mick Ward and David Lewin, and voiced by some seriously talented singers (Amy Douglas and Pete Simpson included). The results are undeniably magical, with "Here On Earth", "Walls", "Take It All Away", "Every Killer Needs a Friend" and trippy "Echo Loves Narcissus" amongst the highlights.

The First Time I Saw Jupiter (extended mix)
Rhoda's Theme (extended mix)
Review: As DFA settle into the landmark of ten years of business, the label seems quite content to challenge people's preconceptions over what they should be releasing. When they stumble upon music as interesting as Fall On Your Sword, it's clearly an approach that should be applauded. This two track debut from the duo formed of Will Bates and Phil Mossman features extended versions of arrangements that were included on their OST for the film Another Earth, with a sonic poise that draws heavily on expansive soundscapes. Lead track "The First Time I Saw Jupiter" steadily grows from the icy dystopia into a melange of twisting synth tones, sulphuric drips of acid and desolate electronics. "Rhoda's Theme" is the more epic and hopeful accompaniment, a forceful beat making its way through the cloudy masses of keys, riding a rigid industrial sized electronic bass tone towards the sky.

Say My Name (The Revenge remix)
Say My Name (The Revenge instrumental)
Review: Scotland's finest Graeme Clark aka The Revenge gets entrusted with the keys to Holy Ghost's "Say My Name" from their recent Static On The Wire EP and delivers two varying remixes which improve on the original's smoothness. The A Side mix begins in a hall of echoes before making an ascent into a gorgeous swirl of vintage disco arrangements and a thumping live drum beat. The instrumental version is the winner here - with the voice removed, Clark focuses on embellishing the track with added disco heat. The electric bassline in particular proves to be highly effective.

Say My Name (The Revenge remix)
Review: DFA favourites Holy Ghost teased us last year with news of a forthcoming album which included a collaboration with Yacht Rock icon Michael McDonald. With a release date (tentatively) slated for the end of summer, for now you'll have to entertain yourself with "Static On The Wire," this four track EP which leans on more than just disco. The title track is built around a tight funk guitar line right out of 1980s R&B with some typically gliding synths to compliment. "Say My Name" is not in fact a Destinys Child cover but a pensive and rewarding journey through synth pop. "I Will Come Back" and "I Know I Hear" represent the more danceable moments with Holy Ghost fans familiar with the former and the latter being the EP highlight, a superlative excursion into throbbing disco replete with diva backing vocals.

Aura Go (feat Tiffany Roth - Run Roc Whisper dub)
Review: The sight of a new 12" from DFA very much falls under the "lesser spotted item" category, and it's even better that the equally unproductive Jee Day is responsible for it. Their debut release, the 2010 drop Like A Child remains a latter-day favourite of the DFA canon at Juno HQ and this second release is every bit its equal. Like that release "Aura Go" pitches the unique vocal stylings of NYC artist Jee Young in the midst of a glowering, acid flushed and constantly elevating production from Dennis "DJ" McNany that doesn't nestle easily within any one electronic genre. The flipside Whisper Dub from Run Roc steers true to its name, twisting the track into the nether regions without any compromise on its intensity.

You Are My Destiny (Nic Fanciulli remix)
Review: It seems strange to think that it's been four years since the release of The Future Will Come, the imperious last album from The Juan Maclean. Sure there's been a worthy DJ Kicks release and that 2011 collection of unreleased tracks and rarities Everybody Get Close, but the world doesn't feel right without some fresh produce from DFA's in-house Iain Dowie lookalike. Evidently DFA felt there was something amiss and issue You Are My Destiny, a superb comeback single for The Juan MacLean which sadly does not feature the ode to Tim Sweeney that was aired on a recent Beats In Space appearance. It does however feature the sublime vocals of regular collaborator Nancy Whang and "You Are My Destiny" follows a similarly chunky take on starry eyed 90s vocal house music as the classic "Happy House" whilst also incorporating a slice of the sci-funk of The Juan Maclean's early output. Not to be content DFA throw in a curveball of a remix commission enlisting the talents of UK house veteran Nic Fanciulli.

Review: DFA Records unveil their latest label addition Lace Curtain; the Supergroup are headed by the perma busy Australian musician Mikey Young of Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Ooga Boogas fame (see we told you) and also includes his Total Control band mate James Vinciguerra and Rat Columns founder David West. As Lace Curtain they explore "an electronic world of pleasure, frustration and sadness" with the results on this assured self titled debut sounding at times like a Fad Gadget B Side circa 1982, "Good Intentions" in particular. It's nice to see DFA exploring so far off the beaten track in the post LCD Soundsystem era.

Review: LCD Soundsystem's version of 'Bye Bye Bayou' stunningly re-introduces the world to this great band. The track is a cover of an Alan Vega song from his 1981 debut album, and will not feature on the forthcoming LCD album. Available now on DFA, 'Bye Bye Bayou' is 8+ minutes of classic LCD Soundsystem; deep soulful grooves that will appeal to fans and non-fans alike and will whet the appetite for all those dying for LCD's upcoming third album to be released in March 2010.

Outside Amore (12" dub version)
Review: Not content with coaxing The Juan Maclean back into action, DFA Records reveal another new addition to their interchangeable family of artists in the shape of Man Tear. This Swedish group is fronted by the tremulous vocal talents of Johan Jonasson, and backed by the respected Studio Barnhus pair Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist who trade in their usual humorous slant on deep house for some thrilling spacious disco. DFA Records was apparently the label Man Tear had in mind to release their material and this debut 12" Amore Outside sounds perfectly at home on the NYC label with it's generous arpeggios, thick disco drums and genuinely odd "whoop" repetitions. Boman and Nordkvist get a chance to really indulge their inner disco on an excellent 12" Dub version on the flip.

Bullet Proof (feat Lady Miss Kier)
Look Into My Eyes
Review: This is a great if slightly unexpected collision between two legends (well, strictly speaking, three legends). Edit and disco king Ray Mang has been a constant source of delight for DJs for 10 years now, working with The Idjut Boys and The Glimmers, as part of Block 16 or for his superb disco edits on his own Mangled imprint. He's joined on this DFA release by Lady Miss Kier, the unforgettable vocalist with Dee-Lite, whose classic "Groove Is In The Heart" still rules after all these years.

And the third legend is George Clinton, who had a hit with "Bullet Proof" in the early 80s. This version really pushes the boat out though, coming in faster and way more frenetic than Clinton's already fairly bouncy number. With wild keyboard stabs and fierce snare hits running rampant, it's a hell of a lot of fun and sounds like a party kicking off right between the ears as LMK repeats the chorus "I ain't bullet proof and I won't wear a ball and chain". Mang's production excels as ever, and this should easily set a crowd off with no delay.

The flipside, "Look Into My Eyes", is calmer and more cosmic than the title track, but it's still a true beauty with a luscious breakdown in the middle. Yet another superb job all round by the reliable Mr. Mang.

Since We Last Met
Since We Last Met (Ricardo Villalobos remix)
Review: DFA continue to hit the right note in the second half of 2010 with this encouraging debut release from NDF aka Bruno Pronsato and Sergio Giogini, hot on the heels of essential releases from The Crystal Ark and Jee Day. The original version of "Since We Last Met" is steeped in melancholic beauty which spreads from the warm synth melodies to the undulating kaleidoscopic chords and intermittent bursts of languid vocals. Beyond the mid point inclusion of some sub heavy kicks, this is a track that has no illusions towards crescendo building, its purpose is to enchant and delight - something that is achieved with ample success. Ricardo Villalobos makes his DFA debut across the B Side with a 12 minute plus abridged 12' edit of the suitably expansive 17 minute remix which appears on the digital release. Giogini's vocals cascade in the mix around off kilter drum programming and a bodily function sampling bassline that combines with dubby melodies for a truly hypnotic effect. Top release!

Review: Along with the introspective punk funk emo of Shocking Pinks, art rock duo Prinzhorn Dance School proved that not everything DFA touches instantly turns to gold. Both acts released albums in 2007 to a Marmite esque reception, and both acts subsequently reclined into the shadows. It's something of a surprise then to see Prinzhorn resurface on DFA via this really nice, beautifully packaged seven inch. It's also good to see the Brighton pair have refined and honed their musical inspiration of sparse, riff heavy arrangements and pissed off lyrics. Definitely worth checking out.

How Deep Is Your Love (Populette remix)
Review: On its original release in the summer, "How Deep Is Your Love" signalled an impressive return to form from New York punk-disco combo The Rapture. Here it returns, with A-Trak and Populette offering two differing interpretations of the mighty original. A-Trak's "Dub For Mehdi" is a touching tribute to the sadly-departed Ed Banger-affiliated DJ/producer. As you'd expect, it offers Ed Banger style indie-dance thrills - all relentless pianos, thick electro-house bottom end and the simplest of raw 303 tweaks. Populette, meanwhile, up the analogue synth count on a bubbling, floor-friendly version that demands repeat listens. As with all of their material, it appears raw and well polished in equal measures.

Space Race
Review: Flying the flag for DFA's evergreen approach to modern disco dynamics, Shit Robot is back in business with the curiously titled "Teenage Bass". Said track paces forth on a relentlessly picked bass guitar note, like the kind of sound you might wind up making in a garage with your mates at the age of 16, possibly. Elsewhere the elements come in expertly teased dribs and drabs from synthesiser licks to distant rave samples, for a lean and focused jam. On the flip "Space Race" is an all-out celebration of the Italo way, as driving bass and melodramatic plastic strings meet with sci-fi sound effects.
