Review: American singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst are two accomplished musicians in their own right, with the latter largely known for his role in Bright Eyes and other bands, with an enviable solo discography too, while the former, after a slew of singles, released her debut album Stranger In The Alps in 2017. Together the pair form Better Oblivion Community Center, who recently scored some airtime on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert with a beaty rendition of their dust-kicking vocal number "Dylan Thomas". The album delivers a bevy of duets and folk-tales with references to '90s pop rock and grunge never that far off, and it's best heard on "Dominos" and the cutesy synth-play of " Exception To The Rule".

Review: Phoebe Bridgers' critically acclaimed and fan approved alternative indie long player Punisher has four tunes from it reversioned on this great new 12". Arranger Rob Moose is the man doing it having worked with Sufjan Stevens, The National, Bon Iver and may others. What he brings is a luscious new sound with majestic, sweeping new orchestral arrangements that bring new perspective to one of last year's best records. This one is sure to win as many new fans as it will please the old ones.

Review: If you weren't already in love with Conor Oberst (with or without Bright Eyes) then this special outing on Dead Oceans is sure to change that tune, perhaps almost as much as the band changed theirs for a good proportion of the tracks on here. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning was the outfit's landmark sixth studio album, unveiled in 2005 on the same day as their seventh LP, Digital Ash In A Digital Urn (how's that for confidence?) and is also available in a new issue today.
Sticking with what is essentially a side note on the era that birthed those records-proper, here Bright Eyes go all out on reworking Digital Ash tracks, retaining the sweetness of the first incarnations, but adding a sense of mayhem, chaos, and outright deviance to the score. The result is folk, boozy, woozy, and heady stuff. A little like walking into a bar on a cold winter's night to find familiar friends in full song.

Review: Cult American band Bright Eyes rebased their seventh studio long-player Digital Ash in a Digital Urn back in 2005. It arrive do the same day as their sixth album I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and managed to peak in the US charts at number 15 and number 43 in the UK. Musically it is an adventurous record that takes in pop, synth pop, experimental, IDM, electronica and electro-pop styles and features contributions from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner and the Postal Service's Jimmy Tamborello.

Review: Best known as a titular member of Durand Jones & the Indications, a group whose signature soulful sound has seen them reach international audiences, Wait Til I Get Over marks Jones' first foray into solo work. Using this as an opportunity to delve into the more personal, storytelling potential of solo artistry, the record is firmly situated in his hometown - Hillaryville, Louisiana -; a town initially founded as a form of reparations to previously enslaved African Americans. The first single to be released from the album, Lord Have Mercy, travels through Jones' family history, recalling his grandmother's memories of moving to the town as a child, via cathartic, wild and raucous vocals. This is a release that masterfully bridges the internal conflict of feeling connected to a place that's at once home but also a historically complex space for its African American community.

Review: Normally found recording with his band The Indications, on this new record for Dead Oceans Durand Jones goes solo to explore a more idiosyncratic dimension to his Southern soul. Wait Til I Get Over is a highly personal record which finds Jones digging deep into his roots growing up in Louisiana, reflecting on his ancestry and delivering a potent black music which draws on gospel, rock n' roll and soul and pushes those fundamentals into exciting new places. It's a record to feel with every fibre of your body, with Jones' grit-edged but oh-so-sweet voice at the centre.

Review: Through his work with revivalist soul band the Indications, Durand Jones has already proved that he's a serious talent - a vocalist and lyricist whose impressive range and impassioned, emotive delivery mark him out as a genuine star in the making. Wait Till I Get Over, his debut solo album, will only enhance his reputation. Framed as a love letter to his hometown of Hillaryville, with thoughtful lyrics that reflect not only on his own intriguing life story but also the history of the town's black community, the collected songs veer from string-laden, socially conscious ballads and fuzzy rhythm & blues workouts, smoky slow jams, nods to Sly Stone and righteous, reverb-laden gospel winners.

Review: Durand Jones & The Indications earned lavish praise for their eponymous 2016 debut album, with critics comparing it favourably to conscious soul sets of the 1970s from the likes of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye. This belated follow up is, if anything, even better, with the group's core offering - tight instrumentation and super-smooth vocals from the hugely talented Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer - being complemented by silky string arrangements, warm brass and lyrics that flit between social commentary and glassy-eyed, loved-up bliss. Highlights include "Morning In America" - a kind of 2019 update to Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" - the super-sweet vocal harmonies of "Don't You Know" and "Long Way Home", a lilting look at homesickness blessed with the twin attractions of swooping strings and a killer bassline.

Review: Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer front The Indications. The band aren't looking backwards when making music, but they do channel the likes of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, and the Impressions. Their sound is steeped in golden strings and dreamy early 70s soul. Their second album furthers that with a very present lyrical mindset and slew of influences from years spent crate-digging. As likely to pull their influences from '70s folk-rock or some classic R&B as they are Nas' most iconic album, Illmatic, The Indications has nailed it with this one.

Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: RECOMMENDED
The remix album is probably pretty hard to crack in terms of putting it together. On the one hand, you want a broad selection of producers to take the work and make it new again. But there's also a very real risk of winding up with a bunch of random tracks with no real coherent thread to ensure the LP is actually going to get enough people buying to warrant engineering, mastering, and pressing costs.

Khruangbin have certainly cracked it with these takes on tracks from their most recent and perhaps most lush long form outing to date. We have sophisticated micro house, percussive slo-mo disco, slick-to-the-touch downbeat grooves and surrealist pop, all of which work both individually and together, the result being a record that not only knows its own mind, it can easily convince others, too.

Review: Desert funkers Khruangbin announce their latest album A La Sala, turning their efforts inward to a more personal recollection of childhood and origination, and to reach a firmer understanding of what exact influences made this troupe who they are today. In contrast to their last record Mordechai (2020), uniquely conceived as a party record from the jump of its making, A La Sala (translation: 'to the room') is the measured, self-reflective morning after; lead singles 'May Ninth' and 'A Love International' pare back the layers even further than we could imagine Khruangbin pulling otherwise, making for emotional ponderings of the external world, inextricably tied to the internal as it is.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Tripped out, smoked out, lackadaisical, bliss-infused overtures, honied and syrupy, easing you in so far that you don't quite realise how hard it is to crawl back out of the sugar-coated opiate haze. A collection of heady, hallucinogenic work for 21st Century high plains drifters, it's jazzy, psychy, lush soulful fare you'll be wanting to hear again and again, capturing the heat and slow pace of America's southern states with heartfelt songwriting from genuine masters. The result is something very special indeed.

Review: There's an enduring wholesomeness to Khruangbin which is extending to the way their approaching documents of their live shows over the years. Their Live At album series has already taken in a show from September last year at Stubb's in Austin - a homecoming show for the world-roaming band, and it featured a host of their support acts and fellow performers too. Now they're presenting a fully-fledged split release with London's premier modern jazz explorers Nubya Garcia, capturing their performance from Radio City Music Hall in New York in March 2022. With a side of wax each, both bands sound utterly captivating in the live setting, and being placed next to each other helps bring the spirit of the evening itself to life in so many ways.

Review: Khruangbin came out of lockdown and hit the road with glee, spreading their infectious, groove-laden joy around the world, and now the dust has settled on that wild ride they wanted to create a special kind of document of their experience watching people dancing together again for the first time in too long. Rather than a straight-up live album, they decided to create a series of Live At recordings which not only feature choice cuts from Khruangbin's sets, but also showcases the music of the people they played with. In the case of this release, it's Toro Y Moi who get the A-side warm-up slot, recorded from their May 7 2022 show from The Fillmore, Miami Beach.

They are currently releasing a number of live albums with one of them being 'Live at Stubbs' featuring them playing as well as performances by Kelly Doyle, Ruben Moreno, The Suffers and Robert Ellis. This record really captures the band's unique energy, the warmth of their bass and the majesty of their melodies so makes for a bewitching and entrancing listen with a limited-edition and unique album cover.

Review: Considering the most she's ever been guilty of is writing soft but super emotional folk-leaning indie rock, Fenne Lily has proven remarkably divisive over the past half decade or so. 2018's debut, On Hold, seemed to split critics down the middle, some lauding praise on the release while others wrote it off as sad girl songs lacking the ingredients to truly stand out.
In reality, all negative thoughts were really the result of one thing - the incredible hype that was surrounding the Bristol songwriter ahead of that first LP. Five years on, and with more records behind her, it's safe to say the haters lost and she definitely won: Big Picture is a confident and committed testament to the fact that she is incredibly talented, packing real impact behind those whispered words and, for the most part, gently plucked six strings.

Review: Japanese-American indie-rocker Mitski was once a cult favourite, but in recent times her audience has grown exponentially, helped by the critical praise heaped on her fourth album, 2016's Puberty 2. Two years on, Be The Cowboy arrives amongst a blizzard of publicity and many more positive reviews. It's certainly a hugely impressive set, with each of the 14 songs dealing with romantic and interpersonal relationships in some way. There's much heartache, of course, expressed both lyrically and in Mitski's distinctive, emotion-rich vocal delivery. Musically, the album never sits still, either, darting between grandiose slabs of poignant moodiness and the kind of jaunty, disco-tinged goodtime grooves that belie their melancholic inspirations.

Her talents work alchemic charms on listeners from the off despite being couched, ostensibly, in pop music. It features her channelling plenty of personal life experiences into cathartic music with which we can all connect. I wrote what I needed to hear," Mitski has explained o the album which follows up her availed last LP, Be The Cowboy, itself building on her breakout debut Puberty 2 in 2006. This one proves she remains a vital talent.

Review: American singer-songwriter Kevin Morby returns with More Photographs, the follow-up to the acclaimed LP This Is A Photograph. The companion LP continues to flesh out the former album's themes of life, death, and memory - portrayed through a mix of autobiographical and fictional stories - revisiting and reimagining several of its songs from an alternative perspective and mood. Morby puts it best: if This Is A Photograph was an impression of "a house that you have been living inside of, then More Photographs is, perhaps, the same home just experienced differently. As if you, its inhabitant, have taken a tab of something psychedelic and now, suddenly, you've replaced your eyeglasses with kaleidoscopes." Morby's poetic lyrics collide well with its atmospheric, revelatory arrangements, all while doing equal justice to its collabs with the likes of Katie Crutchfield and Sam Cohen.

Review: American indie rock singer-songwriter Kevin Morby presents his seventh studio album More Photographs. A companion piece to his previous album Sundowner, More Photographs features songs that were recorded during the same sessions but did not make the final cut - each piece truly sounds like a "photograph", snapshots of time left in dusty old attic-bound photo albums or in ramshackle boxes. New takes on the previous album's songs, including a reprisal version of 'Don't Underestimate Midwest American Sun', lend a more honest perspective on the polished originals, also released on Dead Oceans.

Review: Five years after their debut album made big moves back in 2018, and two after its successor Drunk Tank Pink re-invented them as proper highbrow new wavers, Shame are back with their third Food For Worms. It's tinged with a certain sense of morbidity but also looks outwards and tries to celebrate life. "I don't think you can be in your own head forever," said frontman Charlie Sheen of the writing process. He also declares this to be "the Lamborghini of Shame records" and we are inclined to agree. Fuelled by a love of playing live, this record is one of the fast the band has ever written and so brims with vitality and energy as they cast out their post-punk roots in favour of a more eclectic sound. And what a great result.

Review: Back with a bang and their third album, essential UK post-punk band shame are reaching something of a new maturity on Food For Worms, matching their cacophonous noise-wreaking skills with a sharper instinct for melody and structure. The music remains lithe and urgent, but there's a sense they know exactly what they're doing on this record, building on the promise of 2021's Drunk Tank Pink and 2018 debut Songs Of Praise. With this new-found focus come towering monoliths of tracks which bristle with the excitement of music captured in the moment - a proper band with something to say, musically, lyrically and artistically.

Review: Jump-starting 2018, this debut release from south London's Shame has set the bar pretty high. 'Songs Of Praise' is a well-toned, considered and poised record, striking perfect balances and contrasts in just about every regard: melodic invention and post-punk aggression, optimism and humour against anger and gloom, rough against smooth. In terms of highlights, the entire album is an exhilarating listen, with enough meat for the listener to sink their teeth into, and enough surprises to maintain engagement throughout. This is one of the most fresh, ferocious and inventive post-punk records released in a while, and - in a time when identikit indie groups seem rife - a concrete opening statement from a group who have skilfully proven themselves to be a cut above.

Review: The return of Slowdive has been one of the minor miracles of the 21st century thus far - having originally split up in a mist of disinterest and press opprobrium in the Britpop-damaged mid-'90s, the band have watched their profile and reputation slowly rise to the extent of them now being regarded as scene pioneers and innovators. Review: Having just performed their first ever Glastonbury set this summer, Reading shoegaze pioneers Slowdive are set to unveil their much anticipated fifth full-length Everything Is Alive. Following on from 2017's exceptional self-titled return to form, marking their first new material in over two decades, fans have been eagerly awaiting a continuation of the group's second wind since revealing in 2020 that work was under way for yet another full-length. Promising more minimal electronic based soundscapes as opposed to the ethereal dream-pop of its predecessor, as well being directly influenced and reflective of the passing of both vocalist/guitarist Rachel Goswell's mother and drummer Simon Scott's father, prepare for yet another reshaping of melancholic grandeur in the atypical incomparable Slowdive fashion.

Review: Texan funk-dub stalwarts Khruangbin set aside their own inward-looking solo projects for another collaborative endeavour. Following their first collab with Leon Bridges, they've now covered the work of 'African rock royalty' Ali Farka Toure, alongside his son, Vieux. Toure is a much-celebrated Malian musician whose 'desert blues' evoked a similarly African, primordial version of Khruangbin's Western cosmic folk. While their music came up in completely different times, the throughlines between the Khru' and Toure's musics are far from tenuous; together, the band and Vieux Toure paint a diasporic picture of a legend's music and life, musically documenting the influence his music has had on subsequent generations.

Back in 2021 is when the Asheville five-piece dropped Twin Plagues and it's a record that found them going more big and bad than before with plenty of low level anxieties bubbling under throughout the record - given that we were still in the middle of the pandemic, that's a feeling we can all relate to and remember all too well. Musically there are plenty of fuzzy and distorted riffs with rare moments of emotional calm in between and plenty of complex song writing that fills the mind with vivid imagery.
