Review: As the Dekmantel brand expands to incorporate the Selectors festival in Croatia, the Amsterdam collective still remain focused on delivering quality house and techno singles and albums. Another fine year for Dekmantel ends with the welcome arrival of Invisible Switch, a second album from US techno artist Joey Anderson. His is a unique and at times alien take on the artform, crafting percussive textures and oddly intoxicating synth lines that sound unmistakably like Joey Anderson and no others. This is very much the case with Invisible Switch, with tracks like "Reset" and "Tell Us Where" instantly gripping your attention and not letting go, whilst "Amarna" is the most bludgeoningly intense production yet from Anderson. The EOY list compilers will be kicking themselves they missed out on this one.

Review: Dutchmen Betonkust and Palmbomen II are back on local institution Dekmantel, following up last year's well received Center Parcs LP - which was recorded in the bunker of an abandoned theme park. The retro, grainy and lo-fi qualities that characterise their work is evident again here on Parallel B. This time recorded in a bungalow somewhere in the Dutch countryside, it finds a distinct middle ground between Palmbomen II a.k.a. Kai Hugo's lo-fi classic house aesthetics and Betonkust a.k.a. Swiere Westveen's taste for gritty electro, acid and Italo sounds. It pays fictional homage to a now deceased famous TV star, who instead on working on the screen, took up a new direction in making music.

  2. Betonkust & Palmbomen II - "Onrust Bij Tihange" (5:00)
  3. Space Dimension Controller - "Hindsight '92" (4:57)
  4. Lena Willikens - "Neue Obakel" (6:28)
Review: For the ninth series of Dutch powerhouse Dekmantel's 10 year celebrations they have quite a compelling assortment of tracks, however diverse they are. On the A side we have the Salon Des Amateurs affilated Jan Schulte aka Bufiman serving up yet another oddball groove in the form of "Hymn To The Moonface" (Break mix) an almost new jack swing sounding jam crammed full of lush FM synth textures to boot. We should mention now that colleague and fellow SDA resident Lena Willikens appears later with the spooky and steely brooder "Neue Obakel". The '80s vibe continues courtesy of lo-fi house hero Palmbomen II (with a bit of help from Betonkust) on the neon-lit "Onrust Bij Tihange". On the flip is Irish hi-tech soul merchant Space Dimension Controller with our favourite of the bunch: he takes you deep into the cosmos with his emotive journey "Hindsight '92".

  3. Palms Trax - "Honey Lemongina" (4:45)
  4. Interstellar Funk - "EFX Harmonix" (6:43)
Review: For the fourth volume in their tenth anniversary series, Dekmantel has decided to go all-out electro. Wisely, they've recruited scene legend the Egyptian Lover to kick things off. His "This That Old Skool" is an unashamed romp through early '80s nostalgia, with the eccentric producer peppering a sturdy TR-808 beat pattern with exotic synth lines, "Tour De France"-style heavy breathing and raw vocoder vocals. Syracuse and Epsilove wrap their skittish electro beats in chiming melodies, trippy acid lines and dreamy vocal snatches ("Scubatomic Love"), while Palms Trax necks a fistful of anti-depressants and delivers the pure endorphin rush that is the melodious and spacey "Honey Lemongina". Finally, fast-rising producer Interstellar Funk offers up a lesson in melodious electro/techno fusion on the standout "EFX Harmonix".

  1. The Screen (6:53)
  2. Hit The Road (5:26)
  3. Trials Of Love (7:06)
  4. Slow Motion Disaster (6:23)
Review: We've already been treated to one bonafide classic Entro Senestre 12" this year in the shape of the WT Records released ES ("Rosegold" being the standout) and the producer really spoils us with another superb record in the shape of this Dekmantel debut. The producer, real name Jon Beall, is quite the talent. "The Screen" is Drexciyan-like frenetic electro with a trance, gothic-like glow, while "Hit The Road" is grubby and downright dirty; that's until those delayed chords hit. Chi-town influences, synths and emotional progressions fuel "Trails Of Love", while for some hardcore techno action check out "Slow Motion Disaster". Each track is as good as the next on this record, and yeah it's versatile, but we prefer the word: killer.

Review: When Dekmantel announced Robert Hood's Paradygm Shift project, which encompassed a gaggle of 12" singles and this album, the Dutch label described it as the "older and mature brother" of his seminal 1994 double-pack Minimal Nation. It's a rather apt description. This full album edition offers a gleeful romp through the Detroiter's distinctively booming-but-stripped back style of jacking techno, where slowly morphing loops, foreboding riffs and spooky melody lines ride hypnotic, locked-in grooves. There's little thrillingly new and different here, just killer dancefloor workouts in Hood's trademark style. Given that he does this kind of loop techno better than anyone else, that's a very good thing indeed.

Review: Given their frequent habit of charging off in different musical directions, predicting the contents of a new Juju & Jordash record is getting increasingly difficult. Down To The Roach, their latest 12" for regular home Dekmantel, is typically wide-ranging, variously exploring bouncy fusions of techno futurism and whimsical deep house (the title track and its' accompanying dub), new age-influenced dream house (the bizarrely titled "Bean Bag Motel"), and spiraling, synthesizer-heavy house/electronic disco hybrids (the stargazing goodness of "Lights at Night"). It goes without saying that all four tracks are imaginative, immaculately produced, and hugely enjoyable. Excellent work all round.

Review: When he was asked to put together the fourth volume in Dekmantel's brilliant Selectors series, Joy Orbison decided to use the opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of UK dance music. Predictably, his on-point selections join the dots between the past and the present, moving from the London beat poetry of James Messiah and hard-to-find 1991 UK hardcore of R Solution's surprisingly deep and melodious "Skinny Long Git", to the crunchy, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs IDM of JP Buckle's 1998, Rephlex-released oddity "One For Da Laydeez". Along the way, he finds space for the sparkling early D&B of "Lush" by Oblivion (AKA Source Direct), the low-slung, bass-heavy deep house/acid house fusion of L.E Bass and the analogue techyno idealism of Beatrice Dillon.

  2. Love In Space (5:29)

Review: Jay Donaldson's Palms Trax project hit the headlines six years ago when he provided Lobster Theremin with the label's debut release. Following a couple of solid outings on Dekmantel, Hivern Discs and Secretsundaze, this first release since 2017 is a more than welcome sight. The three tracks on offer are rather good, too, if a little different from his early work. Mainly synthesizer-heavy, Donaldson employs a rush-inducing mixture of colourful lead lines, glistening chord sequences, spacey pads and glassy-eyed electronics. The most floor-friendly of the trio is undoubtedly the Italo-disco-influenced rush of "To Paradise", with the other two cuts exploring deeper, mellower shades of Serotonin-boosting instrumental '80s synth-pop.

Review: California based husband and wife duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis are Peaking Lights - who present their tenth long player on Amsterdam's Dekmantel. The acclaimed live act deliver yet more of their trademark blend of electronic freakouts here with Dunis' outstanding vocal style throughout. From the stylish electro-pop noir heard on numbers like "Blind Corner" or "I Can Read Your Mind", the cosmo-psychedelic dub of "Hypnotized" through to the lo-slung punk-funk of "Shift Your Mind" and the blazed ambient chill-out of the title track.

Review: UK tech-bass specialist Randomer has undoubtedly become one of the most prolific names across this country's dance scene. The talented DJ and producer has promoted his style since those first Hemlock killers began to surface, and he has kept on pushing that sound into new platforms, such as Holland's mighty Dekmantel. This new EP opens with the percussive bang and thrash of "Van Pelt", before launching into an all-out techno attack via "Shadow Harp". On the B-side, "Dissolve" blasts out yet more organized chaos, this time in the form of off-kilter drum sequences that verge on the tribal, leaving the title track to spin the drums into a total frenzy - backed by a radiant industrial bass that bounces from wall to wall. Highly recommended!

Review: Given her remarkable rise to prominence last year, it's not that surprising to find that Katie Campbell AKA Roza Terenzi's first release of 2019 is also her most high profile yet. It sees her pop up on Dekmantel for the very first time with a spacey, synth-heavy four-tracker. There's plenty of subtle variation between tracks, too. Compare, for example, the deep space electro shuffle of "3IY", whose elastic synth bassline is particularly addictive, and the shimmering, slo-mo soundscape that is the effortlessly gorgeous "Bricks". Elsewhere, "Freak N Tweak" sees Campbell wrap rising and falling lead lines around a cyber-hip-hop beat, and "Open Me" is a sparkling, grandiose chunk of bass-heavy house/instrumental synth-pop fusion.

There's naturally plenty to gets heads salivating, from the eccentric European electrofunk of Danny Boy's "Discomix" and the blissful pulse of Ghostwriters cheery synth-out "Swizzle", to the delay-laden, dubbed-out drum machine beats and tribal chants of "200 FA (Extended Mix)" by The Force Dimension. Elsewhere, check out the ultra-positive Balearic loveliness of Personal FX's "Objects In Mirrors" and the rubbery, undulating breeziness of Wolf Muller's "Pfad Des Windes". Simply essential.
