Review: Carsten Jost is the DJ and Producer alias of David Lieske, co-founder of Dial Records. His latest collection of functional, ultra-utilitarian techno tracks here is essentially a slew of music for Moon exploration. Peaceful, raw and wonky techno tunes with a blue temperament are firmly arranged across 10 portions of wax; all carry the comparative sense of having less gravity weighing them down than techno made on Earth; it's techno made at 1.62 m/s² compared to our 9.807. Standouts include the alien voice cameos on 'IV' and the subterranean cave excursion that is 'VII'.

Review: Following DJ Richard's crucial LP Dial round out another fine year with a debut album from self-styled "open collective" Dawn Mok, whose debut came with a fine contribution to the 15th anniversary compilation. Featuring creative input from an international cast of musicians encompassing the US, Asian, and European heritage, Dawn Mok are a curious addition to the Dial cause. Spearheaded by collective founder Felix Mura and vocalist Bundi, Eternal Love shares more with r&b than house or techno, but the best part is that we hadn't heard this type of music ever come out of this label. There are plenty of more abstract moments too, of course, and the tracks that are more on the pop side of things are still drenched in a thick layer or ambient gloom. It's minimal r&b, Dial style.

Review: German label Dial was probably not the most obvious choice for DJ Richard to release his debut album on, but it turns out that Grind is a perfect fit. Tracks like "No Balance" and "Waiting for the Green Flash" are eerie, atmospheric compositions and capture the often times sangfroid sound (and design) of the Hamburg imprint. Elsewhere, there are nods to the classic deep house and techno, especially on the winding, stop-start bleep groove of "Savage Coast" and the fragile, sublime melodies of closing track "Vampire (dub)". However, if there is one track that really consolidates the Dial-DJ Richard relationship, it's the staccato beats and sonorous bass of "I-Mir", an arrangement that perfectly captures the label's wintry escape from the daily grind.

Review: Rhode Island young gun turned Berlin success story DJ Richard has come a long way. After the success of his White Material label (known for its dusty and dirty house workouts) he's snapped up by Hamburg institution Dial for a full length album, and it does not at all disappoint. Grind is an inspired journey through Richard's many musical dimensions, showing off some sides to his sound not heard previously. After the black metal inspired intro of "No Balance" he gives us the smooth and majestic deep house of "Nighthawk" and "Savage Coast" that are more typical of the Dial sound but there's also the dark atmosphere of "I-Mir" and the brilliant "Vampire Dub".

Review: It would be fair to say that White Material co-founder DJ Richard's latest full-length excursion is an album of two halves (to mangle a football cliche). Stick on the first slab of wax, and you'll be confronted with a string of dark and moody treats, from creepy ambient interludes to grumpy electro, to mind-altering dark-Italo (see standout "Vanguard") and pulsating, off-kilter electronica (the restless acid pulse, off-kilter drums and paranoid chords of "Tunnel Stalker"). Whack on the second disc, though, and you'll be comforted and calmed by a series of intensely blissful, occasional melancholic compositions that are much lighter and dreamier in tone. Of these, it's the sublime "Final Mercy" and "Ex Aere" that stand out.

Review: Dial regular Efdemin returns with a third album of a respected career, with the autumnal theme of Decay inspired by the German producer's three-month artist residency in Kyoto, Japan. Sollmann immersed himself in the local culture while in Kyoto, attending ceremonies with monks at temples and visiting local instrument makers. This results in a ten track set that canvasses the sort of poignant, introverted house music that's characterised much of Phillip Sollmann's work as Efdemin to date. There are however a few stylistic surprises along the way - the stripped back, jacking "Transducer" or the fusion of jazzy licks and noisy bursts of percussion that makes up the title track - but overall you'd be hard pushed to think of a better label to house Decay than Dial.

Some Kind Of Up & Down Yes (Asusu remix)
Solaris (Staffan Linzatti remix)
Parallaxis (The Borderline State remix)
Review: Released earlier this year, Efdemin's third studio album Decay will probably end up in a fair few end of year lists come December thanks to ten tracks that mixed up the poignant, introverted house Phillip Solman is know for with a few stylistic curveballs. Obviously aware of this, Dial have elected to complement the album with a series of remix 12"s and the first features quite a diverse selection of contributors indeed. Livity Sound's Asusu mans the A Side with a wonderfully minimalist take of "Some Kind Of Up And Down Yes" with the original's alien qualities smudged into something surprisingly understated and atmospheric. By contrast Steffan Linzatti goes the opposite route with his remix of "Solaris", embellishing the fluttering Martian textures with the results akin to Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky series. A closing remix from Efdemin's studiomate John Gurtler (a.k.a. The Borderline State) sees "Parallaxis" shorn of it's rhythmic backbone and replaced with acoustic instrumentation which Dial describe quite aptly as a "convergence of minimalist composers Moondog and Wim Mertens".

Review: Dial Records are really on a roll these days. After recently releasing a beautiful album by Pawel and their remarkable 10 year anniversary compilation, they come back at us with the long awaited second album from Efdemin, Chicago. Berlin-based Efdemin (aka Phillip Sollmann) has been associated with the Hamburg-founded label since its inception a decade ago. His self-titled debut in 2007 was a stunning affair that resonated deeply with both the house and techno communities. After three years and several singles in between, Efdemin has finally graced us once again with nine new soul-striking tracks that combine the beauty and deepness we have come to associate with his productions. "Cowbell" starts things off with a vocal snippet, warbled organs and slow drum rolls as a prelude to "Shoeshine" which kicks things into higher gear with its tough drums and precise high-hats. All tracks seamlessly flow into each other, a concept many artists tend to overlook when making a full length album. This overall sense of flow makes it pleasure to listen to uninterrupted. Instead of finely balancing the line between house and techno, Chicago has more of a jazz-induced feeling to it- which is not to say that it's light or too refined, but rather more intriguing and textured than your standard fare of straight up deep house or deep techno. Oh, and there's even a Homer Simpson sample hidden in there.

Parallaxis (Traumprinz Over 2 The End version)
Review: The diverse musical tastes of Phillip Solman are evident once again on this second round of remixes tied to his fine 2014 album Decay. There is something for all fans of contemporary techno here as ERP (aka Gerard Hanson), Don Williams, Johannes Volk and Traumprinz all contribute to proceedings. Typically the ERP revision of "Decay" recasts the album's title track as rough, bouncing electro whilst Mojuba boss Don Williams flushes "Track 93" with new levels of Motor City indebted urgency over a throbbing low end bass groove. On the flip Mr Volk turns in a fine melodic tweak of "Parallaxis" though it's fairly overshadowed by the epic orchestral rendition from Giegling artist Traumprinz.

Review: Long before releasing Efdemin's "Bergwein" it seemed to be a little underground hit, featured on the groove100 CD mixed by Lawrence and a part of the sets faves of DJs like Shinedoe, Sascha Funke, Carsten Jost and many more. A piece of minimal primetime deepness, filled with Detroit strings and the most hypnotic bassline ever. Lawrence's unserious takeout shows his unstraight infantile side, inspired by Bell 'N' Bass boosting Rephlex madness. Jubilee Dial 30 ends up with a super low nice cover version taken from the new 'Neu' CD by Michaela Meise and Sergej Jensen.

Spiritual Enhancer
Review: It promises to be yet another interesting year for Dial Records with an upcoming compilation and the tantalising prospect of a debut album from White Material man DJ Richard on the horizon. Before that, it's Herr Flugel that kicks proceedings off with a new three track 12" that sounds and feels every bit as vibrant as this stellar 2014 LP Happiness Is Happening. Sliced Africa opens with "Black Towers" a racketing slab of epic deepness that appears suited to the early morning moments, whilst the title track has our Roman veering off into more tropical territory. Some superb drum programming on this one. To close "Spiritual Enhancer" adopts a more contemplative poise, easing down the tempo and providing the warm up DJs with a B Side gem to cherish.

Review: German veteran Roman Flugel's debut album under his given name, 2011's Fatty Folders, was something of a surprise package - a collection of warm, playful and melodious tracks that belied his reputation for hypnotic techno and eccentric deep house. This follow-up retains that playfulness - not to mention a curious pop sensibility with regards to tunefulness - but douses it in the clanking rhythms of machine drums and industrial strength electronics. The production is still pleasingly finessed, but there's also a pleasingly raw feel to his blends of IDM, deep house, deep techno, electronica and classic Kraftwerk (see the standout "Wilkie"). Happiness is Happening also impressively plays around with mood and tempo, with wholeheartedly positive results.

Review: Given the length of his career, it's perhaps surprising that this is Roman Flugel's first album under his own name. Fatty Folders finds him in fine form, building on the success of his recent Dial 12" singles via a series of cuts that largely show him at the peak of his powers. While there are nods to some of his more celebrated deep house and hypnotic techno productions, Fatty Folders is musically far more playful than much of his output. At times it sounds like Flugel's take on early Orbital, at others more like a typically Teutonic fusion of Detroit futurism and Plone-ish synthscapes. Most satisfyingly, it remains thoroughly entertaining throughout. Flugel-funk anyone?

Certainly, the prolific German producer's vast catalogue boasts way more hits than misses, with this latest full-length - his third for Dial - being amongst his strongest work to date. After beginning with the slow burning, late night ambience of "Fantasy", the former Alter Ego producer gently raises the tempo throughout, moving from the off-kilter, experimental techno hypnotism of "Dead Idols" and sparse, out-there dancefloor moodiness of "Warm & Dewy", to the ghostly house shuffle of "All The Right Noises", and John Carpenter-meets-Black Dog creepiness of "Planet Zorg". Throughout, it's hugely thoughtful and atmospheric.

Review: While he does have an excuse - after all, co-running the Dial imprint must be a near full time job - 16 years is long time to wait for a new Carsten Jost album. Happily, this long-promised follow-up to 2001's You Don't Need A Weatherman To Know Which Way The Wind Blows is really rather good. It contains a mixture of now vintage material - another airing for sublime 2007 double A-side "Atlantis" and "Atlantis II" - and brand new cuts. Musically, it's hugely atmospheric and otherworldly, subtly slipping between ambient soundscapes, hushed techno workouts, spacey, dub-wise explorations, and quietly melodic deep house. In other words, it was definitely worth waiting for.

Review: 2000 saw the birth of Dial Records, a label once beautifully described as releasing "techno for flowers". Their dark, atmospheric beats tinged with ethereal orchestration and sophisticated musicality have won the label a dedicated following that continues to grow to this day. Label founders Carsten Jost and Lawrence have frequented the label over the years and for their sixtieth release, ' Greater Administration Of The Lower Interests is unveiled as an EP teaser for their upcoming album. From Jost, "Chateau Jalouise" blends a beautifully sparse percussive base with delicate piano chords, sporadic tambourine rushes and little else; electronic simplicity fused with classical emotion. On the flip "The Swan" from Lawrence opts for tight stabby keys set amidst delicate sweeping string beds and a rolling rhythm section. Jazzy, deep and bragging sophistication by the bucket load, the upcoming album looks set to be nothing short of genius.

The vinyl version has been naturally split into different releases, and we're on number 2 now, a second slab of wax that features five of the compilation's originals. First up is label boss Carsten Jost with the deep, luscious and dreamy house beats of "My Confession", followed by RNDM's "Summer Smile", an intricate little banger for the warm up hours. The flipside sees Physical Therapy's jungle-filtered "Market Crash" take the spotlight - our favourite of the lot - the starry, cinematic chimes of "Paloma" by John Roberts, and the deep, stuttering delays of "S Lush" by James K. Wonderful.

Review: Swiss producer Ben Kaczor joins Dial for the release of his new album Petrovo Uho, an 11 track opus that comes hot n the heels of his last album only back in April, Sun Chapter One. He taps into the classic sound of Dial here with bottomless and heady depths. The artist says a trip to Dubrovnik in summer had a big influence on the album as he was inspired by the sound of a foreign language and tried to reflect the sounds and atmosphere of the trip in the music here. There are just 250 copies of this so move quickly.

Review: Having flirted with Mule across his last two album length excursions, Lawrence returns to the Dial label he founded with Carsten Jost for Films & Windows, the Hamburg producer's sixth studio album. Given how much finely sculpted deep house terrain Peter M. Kersten has covered on his previous five album it's not surprising to hear that Films & Windows is driven by a central concept. Ten tracks deep, Kersten's production was apparently motivated and "inspired by an endless number of screened movies and real-life films". It's open to interpretation how much this actually manifests itself in the end results, though Lawrence fans will delight in the rich melodic warmth apparent in tracks such as "In Patagonia" whilst "Lucifer" is a certified jam.

Review: Dial label boss Lawrence presents his eighth LP on the Hamburg based imprint which he runs with Carsten Jost. Across nine tracks, the Illusion LP combines field recordings and acoustic instruments, merging with his idiosyncratic and understated style. Things get off to a great start on the sleek and sensual bounce of "Treasure Box", while "Yu Yu" or the title track are exactly the type of etheral deep house you've come to know and love from the man. Towards the end, the Berlin based producer even serves up his version of electro on the bold groove of "Transitions" and "Crystal" ends the wonderful album on a sublime ambient vibe. Another terrific offering from Peter Kersten.

Creator (Final Call)
Review: It's been quite a while since Lawrence has appeared on the Dial imprint he founded with Messrs Jost and Turner, and while he's not exactly been slacking with appearances on Mule, Pampa, Smallville and Dial offshoot Laid, it's nice to see the man known as Peter M. Kersten back on familiar territory with the Etoile Du Midi EP. Trademark Lawrence nuances are in restrained abundance across each of the three tracks here, such as the skipping, gloopy groove of the title track that playfully hints at concrete jack amidst the crystalline textures. Alongside this "Creator" sees Lawrence in a looser mood, drawing out increasingly hypnosis inducing circles of melody over a locked groove that gradually gets dominated by the shimmering clouds of chords that appear overhead.

Review: Dial celebrated its 15th anniversary in requisite fashion this year with the All compilation, a CD pulling in productions from label regulars as well as hinting at the shape of their future with some new faces. The latest All 12" sampler is largely formed of those you'd readily associate with Dial. Lawrence turns in "Chez Dupont" another example of his talented of mysterious and ethereal grooves. Efdemin proves yet again why he is the auteur of beautifully crafted and soulful techno on "No Exit". "In Your Wardrobe" by Roman Flugel is a welcome edition no doubt as his legendary sound aesthetic is totally in harmony with the label. Finally the last two artists highlight the far reaching diversity of the label yet keep its aesthetic aligned, with the R&B flavour of the mysterious Dawn Mok and label mainstay Pawel's brooding lo-fi ballad "All Nearness Pauses".

Review: An artist who isn't afraid to strip his compositions back to their bare essentials, the German-based Christian Naujoks here deals out an album of no little spare beauty, allowing fragile guitar and piano curlicues to exist in their own space and his songs to achieve a starker resonance whilst open to the elements. Whilst he has previously made his name with material that could be described as modern chamber music, 'Wave' bears most comparison to the minimal vulnerability and twilight beauty of Vini Reilly's Durutti Column, deserving kudos for the bravery of its approach as well as the skill and craft that's gone into its creation.

Review: Carsten Jost, Lawrence and Bianca Heuser's Dial Records imprint recently celebrated 15 years in business with the CD-only All compilation of previously unreleased fare. Here, some of those tracks come to vinyl for the first time. Stefan Tcherepnin kicks things off with the delicate, Japanese-influenced downtempo pop of "I Want To Be Art", before DJ Richard reaches for the Detroit techno cymbals and jazzy chords of the wonderfully wonky "Zero". Flip for the atmospheric, beatless electronics of Christian Naujoks, the deep techno lusciousness of Pantha Du Prince's "Timeout On The Rocks", and the shimmering, spacey ambience of Queens' impeccable "Earth Angel".

Review: The pairing of Efdemin and RNDM has already borne some fruitful results for a scattered selection of EPs, and now the pair return with more of their austere minimal techno. The most surprising entry is opening track "Dirty Float" which staggers to life in a tangle of warm synth gurgles and micro-crackles with not a kick in sight. "Painting The Tape" is much more standard fare, plumbing the depths of looped hypnotism full of hushed synths and whispering beats, but "Sunrise Industry" lifts out of the murk with a greater presence and an engaging chime pitched perfectly for those early morning moments.

Review: Somewhat remarkably, A Life Without Notifications not only marks Alan Abrahams' first new material for two years, but also his first release on the admirable Dial label. All three tracks are typically positive and melodious, with the affable South African once more showcasing his love of colourful synthesizers and tactile electronics. Of the three, it's arguably A-side "I Open My Eyes", where mournful pianos, squelchy synth-bass and drifting vocal refrains ride a bongo-laden, up-tempo deep house groove, that makes the biggest impression. That said, the deeper, jazzier drum machine rhythms and toasty Fender Rhodes keys of "Wear Your Life Like a Loose Negligee" are little less than delicious.

Review: New York producer John Roberts sophomore set, 2013's concept set Fences, was something of an off-kilter triumph. There's more atmospheric, gently undulating, experimentally-minded fare to be found on this new EP for Roberts' long-time home Dial Records. "Ausio", a gently unwinding foray into quietly melodic but formidably fuzzy techno territory, is particularly revelatory, feeling ear-pleasing and attractive despite its' analogue rhythms and clear dancefloor focus. The skittering but fluid "Indigo" - IDM meets 808 electro meets leftfield Balearica - is almost as good, while "Faces" is unashamedly picturesque and wholeheartedly sweet. In other words, it's another excellent EP from the classically trained producer.

Review: Since releasing his debut album Glass Eights in 2010, American producer John Roberts has taken to the road, traveling the globe recording sounds and reporting on his trips for Travel Almanac magazine. Those experiences are laid bare on Fences, his second album. An atmospheric, melodic set that delivers an unusual but highly entertaining fusion of global influences with crystalline electronica, warm downtempo explorations and near Balearic IDM. There's a notable fragility about Roberts' hissing, crackly production that lends a certain resonance to the recordings, guaranteeing a excellent blend of atmosphere and musicality throughout.

Review: Fences is the long awaited new album from Dial poster boy John Roberts, arriving three years after the Ohio born producer's hugely accomplished and widely lauded debut LP, Glass Eights. In the period between albums Roberts has busied himself with a smattering of remixes and the odd 12", though his primary concern outside of touring has been co-editing The Travel Almanac, a high end magazine exploring "travelling and temporary habitation for an increasingly sophisticated and mobilized generation of travellers". Not your typical techno producer then. The ten tracks that form Fences were conceived and recorded during Roberts' worldwide travels, and later sequenced and mixed in NYC and offer a further refinement on the combination of sound design, sample research and contemporary club music that characterised last year's Paper Frames 12".

Crushing Shells
Review: Producer, DJ and budding travel almanac editor John Roberts returns with his first original material since that superlative debut album Glass Eights. The four tracks that make up Paper Frames are described by Roberts as "a wonderful journey into sound design, sample research and contemporary club music" and see him experiment further with preconceptions of what club music should sound like - something that was evident on recent remixes of Blondes and George Fitzgerald. The Opening short "Untitled II" retains all the mastery of delicate instrumentation shown on Glass Eights, though it's combined with jagged rhythmic edits and acts as a neat prelude to where Roberts goes on the subsequent title track. Perhaps best described as Roberts chopping up the sounds of a bull rampaging through a Denmark St shop, it's an excellent track and the highlight of a welcome return on Dial.
