Review: Carsten Jost, Lawrence and Bianca Heuser's Dial Records imprint recently celebrated 15 years in business with the CD-only All compilation of previously unreleased fare. Here, some of those tracks come to vinyl for the first time. Stefan Tcherepnin kicks things off with the delicate, Japanese-influenced downtempo pop of "I Want To Be Art", before DJ Richard reaches for the Detroit techno cymbals and jazzy chords of the wonderfully wonky "Zero". Flip for the atmospheric, beatless electronics of Christian Naujoks, the deep techno lusciousness of Pantha Du Prince's "Timeout On The Rocks", and the shimmering, spacey ambience of Queens' impeccable "Earth Angel".

  1. I Open My Eyes (6:23)
  2. Wear Your Life Like A Loose Negligee (5:29)
  3. Sheltered Light (8:49)
Review: Somewhat remarkably, A Life Without Notifications not only marks Alan Abrahams' first new material for two years, but also his first release on the admirable Dial label. All three tracks are typically positive and melodious, with the affable South African once more showcasing his love of colourful synthesizers and tactile electronics. Of the three, it's arguably A-side "I Open My Eyes", where mournful pianos, squelchy synth-bass and drifting vocal refrains ride a bongo-laden, up-tempo deep house groove, that makes the biggest impression. That said, the deeper, jazzier drum machine rhythms and toasty Fender Rhodes keys of "Wear Your Life Like a Loose Negligee" are little less than delicious.

Review: It would be fair to say that Tom Ruijg AKA Tracey is an artist on the up. Since making his debut on pal Tom Trago's Voyage Direct label back in 2017 he's developed his sound further via quietly impressive releases on Aus Music and Midland's Intergraded imprint. Now operating on Dial, "Biostar" sees the Dutch producer deliver a debut album of hissing, analogue rich lo-fi treats that draw influence from deep electro, Boards Of Canada style IDM, Rephlex-esque "braindance", distorted industrial music, spacey ambient, acid and rhythmically punchy '80s electro. There's so much going on that it will take a few listens to really sink in, but it's more than worth the effort; as debut albums go, "Biostar" is up there with the best of them.
