Kabsa (12")
Cat: DH 020. Rel: 08 May 19
Deep House
  1. Baba (5:36)
  2. Kabsa (5:20)
  3. Ras (4:54)
  4. Kabsa (Nicola Cruz remix) (4:41)
Review: Given his passion for updating traditional global sounds and indigenous drum rhythms, Auntie Flo is a perfect fit with Moscoman's Disco Halal label - as this first EP for the imprint neatly proves. There's something particularly alluring about "Baba", a woozy and intoxicating deep house cut that sees him wrap heady hand percussion, exotic flute lines and sun-kissed chords around a Middle East inspired rhythm track. He explores similar sonic territory on the slightly bolder title track "Kabsa", while "Ras" sounds like an unlikely Arabic fusion of Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls" and the intoxicating ethno-house of Nicola Cruz. Speaking of which, Cruz pops up to deliver a brilliant sparse but percussive take on "Kabsa" that helps lift the EP to even greater heights.

  1. Vandre (7:15)
  2. Vandre (Marvin & Guy Halal sensation) (8:06)
  3. Ossain (8:03)
  4. Dengo (6:26)
Review: Having established themselves as purveyors of fine, Middle Eastern-inspired fare, Disco Halal has decided to apply their magic touch to South American music, with the assistance of specialists Selvagem and Carrot Green. As usual, the emphasis is on blending obscure source material with original music and production. This works particularly well on "Vandre", where an acoustic samba number is turned into a bubbling, Balearic house gem via glistening electronics, synthesized marimba lines and metronomic beats. Marvin and Guy go even further on their remix, turning in a blissful deep house chugger. Flip for the low-slung Brazilian disco-funk of "Dengo" and "Ossain", a misty-eyed, sunrise house number blessed with all manner of (sampled) Brazilian instrumentation.

Disco Halal Vol 2 (limited 12")
Cat: DH 002. Rel: 18 Aug 15
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. Machintosh (Moscoman edit) (5:14)
  2. Hamathil (Red Axes edit) (6:50)
  3. Hilbeth (Rabo & Snob edit) (7:42)
  4. Sorarim (KMTR edit) (4:48)
Review: The first volume of Delfonic's Disco Halal series, featuring brilliant re-edits by Acid Arab and Mehmet Aslan of obscure Middle Eastern material, was something of a hit. Four months on, the series returns with another quartet of Arabic dancefloor treats. While ears will undoubtedly be drawn to the intoxicating Lebanese disco of "Sorarim (KMTR Edit)", there are plenty of tasty treats to be found across the EP. We're particularly enjoying the clavinet-heavy slo-mo disco chug of Rabo & Snob's edit of "Hilbeth" and Moscoman's darkly spun, extra-percussive rework of "Machintosh". That said, Red Axes version of "Hamathil" is a certified killer, too.

Uncountable Set (white vinyl 12")

  1. Palanquin Bearing Monkey (6:01)
  2. Stepping On Dewdrops (6:21)
  3. Pneuma (9:20)
  4. Chember (7:48)
Review: Sometime Going Good and Jin Records producer Yoshinori Hayashi re-surfaces on Disco Halal, a label befitting his maverick, impossible-to-pigeonhole talents. Uncountable Set is predictably eccentric, with Hayashi laying down a quartet of muddy, otherworldly cuts that gleefully stick two fingers up at neat categorization. Check, for example, the rhythmic sample soup this is "Palanquin Bearing Monkey" - think spacey, jazz-funk synth doodles, handclap-based rhythms and all manner of woozy, cut and paste samples - the out-there afro-jazz of "Stepping on Dewdrops" and the frankly nightmarish closer "Chember", a fiendishly freaky weird-out that peppers a slipped jazz rhythm with cut-up choral samples and cement mixer percussion hits.

  2. Big Fat Head (dub mix) (6:40)
  3. Big Fat Head (instrumental mix) (6:38)
  4. Big Fat Head (Nucat remix) (8:55)
Review: Next up on Berlin via Tel Aviv's Disco Halal imprint is Kincaid: the father and son team of Neil & Joe Arthur - the senior being one half of '80s synthpop legends Blancmange. The record marks the first original production from the pair, who have previously collaborated on a string of remixes for Blancmange such as "What's The Time", "Distant Storm" and "Not A Priority" - taken from the acclaimed albums "Wanderlust" and "Unfurnished Rooms". On "Big Fat Head", the pair has found a fitting home on Moscoman's label - this slow burning and intoxicating groove will take you deep into the exotic. On the flip, the label boss and Trikk team up as Nucat for some groovy nu-disco business on the remix.

I Ran (12")
Cat: DH 014. Rel: 21 Mar 18
Disco/Re-Edits
  1. I Ran (8:25)
  2. I Ran (Simple Symmetry remix) (6:47)
Review: Given that this is Moscoman's first solo single on the Disco Halal imprint he inaugurated in 2015, it's perhaps unsurprising that he's saved something rather special for the occasion. "I Ran" is a throbbing, high-octane peak-time treat, where haunting Arabic vocals seemingly float over a thrusting, arpeggio-driven groove and bubbly, off-kilter machine drums. It's druggy and intoxicating, of course, but also fiendishly heavy and pleasingly unorthodox. On the flipside, old pals Simple Symmetry re-imagine "I Ran" as a sticky and trippy chunk of organic Arabic dub disco, complete with toasty bass and razor-sharp electric guitars. It's not quite as thrilling as Moscoman's original version, but it's a close run thing.

  2. Dervish Euphoria (6:15)
  3. Exploding Toads Mystery (7:43)
Review: Russian brothers Sasha and Sergey Lipsky made their Disco Halal bow just over a year ago, serving up an EP that joined the dots between Persian mysticism and chugging contemporary disco. They're at it again here, though many will note that fine A-side "Too Much Fun At The Temple of Doom" is an altogether more up-tempo exploration of their Middle Eastern influences than we've come to expect. It's rather good, all told, and is given fine support on the flipside by the Arabic-Italo chug of "Dervish Euphoria" and the rubbery, Lebanese synth-pop-goes-acid-house goodness of closer "Exploding Toads Mystery", which may well be one of the song titles of the year.

  13. Cheops (3:50)
Review: Moscoman's increasingly influential Disco Halal label have outdone themselves once more on this latest release, an official reissue of the highly sought-after self-titled TCP album. Standing for Tony Carey Project, this 13-track LP originally saw the light of day on the classic X Records back in 1984 and laid down a marker for the sound the former Rainbow keys man would go on to explore as Yellow Power and Planet P. If you are a fan of the DJ mixes of Lena Willikens or Red Axes you really need to invest some time in this TCP album which set the groundwork for the electronic music we know today. Shouts to Disco Halal for getting Tony Carey to supply some killer sleeve notes too! Reissue of the week!
