Cat: MAS 022. Rel: 16 Jan 19
International
  1. Cumbia Chulita (3:49)
  2. Saludos Desde Oakland (3:59)
Review: El Mero Guero Sonidero is a fairly well known DJ on the Californian cumbia underground, though this seems to be the Bay Area resident's debut single release. As with many cuts on Discos Mas, "Cumbia Chulita" offers a suitably 21st century take on the Colombian genre, with traditional elements - accordions, vocals, hand percussion - sitting side by side with hip-hop vocal samples, intergalactic synth lines, heavy sub bass and shuffling drum machine beats. His love of dub delays, wild synthesizer lines and spoken vocals comes to the fore on spaced-out B-side "Saludos Desde Oakland", which is pretty out there despite the presence of a relentless cumbia riddim.

Me Voy Pa' Porce
Cat: MAS 019. Rel: 14 Mar 18
International
  1. Me Voy Pa' Porce (4:09)
  2. Pistola (4:45)
Review: New wave cumbia and Afro-Latin vibes from La Misa Negra: a seven-piece band from Oakland, California. On stage, they deliver an electrifying performance that explodes with infectious dance grooves and punk rock energy, powered by horn and accordion-driven riffs, a fierce rhythm section and a vintage inspired sound. On the strength of their wild and unique shows, they have gained a reputation as one of the most exciting live bands to emerge from the Bay Area in recent years, garnering a diverse fan base that transcends musical, cultural, and generational divides. From the sweltering bossa vibes of "Me Voy Pa' Porce" to the scorching Afro-jazz of "Pistola" which is reminiscent of the legendary Cal Tjader - these guys are one to watch in 2018.

Baila Morena
Cat: MAS 008. Rel: 01 Mar 16
International
  1. Baila Morena (4:13)
  2. Cumbia Sin Calzones (3:30)
Review: Straight outta Puebla, Los Daddys let rip with two more unique future cumbia jams. "Baila Morena" runs with energetic gusto, synth-toms and tongue-in-cheek announcer effects breaking up the tradition cumbian vocals. "Cumbia Sin Calzones" slows down the tempo but adds heavy organ dynamics that march with a sense of matrimony... You're walking down the aisle but you have no idea what you're walking in to. One of a kind.

La Cumbia Para El Pueblo
La Cumbia Para El Pueblo (coloured vinyl 7" (comes in different coloured vinyl, we cannot guarantee which one you will receive))
Cat: MAS 016. Rel: 14 Jun 17
International
  1. La Cumbia Para El Pueblo (4:38)
  2. Las Cuerdas De Ayotzinapa (3:47)
Review: Though we don't get to see them perform much in the UK, Los Daddys have a reputation as one of the most impressive contemporary cumbia bands around. The high regard in which they're held is as much a reflection of their eccentric, 21st century approach to the traditional style as their energetic performances. This pleasingly modern approach is much in evidence on A-side "La Cumbia Para El Puebo", where live and electronic cumbia beats are joined by crunchy guitar licks and rapped Spanish vocals. In contrast, flipside "Las Cuerdas De Ayotzinapa" is an altogether more traditional affair - despite the odd, pitched down vocal yelps and Just Brothers surf guitar lines - with the action being focused around some killer drum work.

La Vida Es Un Carnaval (red vinyl 7")
Cat: MAS 011. Rel: 01 Mar 16
International
  1. La Vida Es Un Carnaval (3:24)
  2. La Vida Es Un (version) (3:44)
Review: Roboticized, contemporised, synthesized: Oakland up-and-comers Los Disco Duro repurpose cumbia styles with a quirky electronic charm that sits somewhere between Daft Punk and Senor Coconut. Their third single to date, "La Vida Es Un Carnaval" packs vocodered vocals in harmonic layers as syncopated synths provide the heel-clicking, street swinging beat. Flip for a slightly darker version where the vocals are removed in favour of more floor-focused drums and added twisted calypso feels. Unique.

Lluvia Con Nieve
Cat: MAS 034. Rel: 21 Jul 20
International
  1. Lluvia Con Nieve (4:19)
  2. La Chankla (2:44)
Review: Since helping launch the Disco Mas label in 2014, Los Disco Duro has released a string of "analogue synthesizer interpretations of Latin classics", re-imagining familiar favourites as often sleazy, intergalactic-sounding workouts. They're at it again here, too, first offering up a drums, synths and electric piano take on salsa standard "Lluvia Con Nieve" whose most unusual, headline-grabbing feature is the presence of some cheeky Kraftwerk style vocoder vocals. Arguably even better is more revolutionary B-side "La Chankla", an early '80s, Afrika Bambaata style electro workout peppered with Spanish language vocoder vocals and sampled Latin drum fills.

Trik O Tri
Trik O Tri (orange marbled vinyl 7")
Cat: MAS 017O. Rel: 24 Feb 20
International
  1. Trik-O-Tri (4:08)
  2. La Arana De Chocolate (4:05)
Review: Second time around for Los Jaloguines first (and so far only) single on Discos Mas, which first surfaced on the cumbia-inspired label back in 2017. "Trik-O-Tri" (trick-or-treat) is typical of the label's eccentric output, with the little-known studio outfit layering bizarre, Halloween-themed vocals (pitched up and down for extra wonkiness) over a reggae-tinged 21st century psychedelic cumbia beat. Flipside "La Arana De Chocolat" is an equally bizarre but brilliant number that tells the tale of a listener caught in the web of an imaginary chocolate spider. It, too, features effects-laden vocals, while the side ends with some locked cumbia grooves for DJs who like to get inventive in the mix.

Trik O Tri
Cat: MAS 017. Rel: 02 Oct 17
International
  1. Trik-O-Tri (4:08)
  2. La Arana De Chocolate (3:58)
Review: The latest eccentric chunk of 21st century cumbia from the Disco Mas camp has a not-so-subtle Halloween theme. A-aside "Trik-O-Tri" is, as the name suggests, a tongue-in-cheek cumbia tribute to the process of door-to-door sweet scrounging, whose hybrid electronic/acoustic groove is laden with spooky synth flourishes and all manner of silly vocals. It's one of those tracks that is simply impossible to dislike. On the flipside, the previously unheard combo unveils "La Arana De Chocolate", a head-nodding cumbia cut rich in ghostly melodies whose fuzzy vocals tell a tale of a spider made of confectionary. As a bonus, the track ends in a locked groove to allow for longer mixes and impromptu bouts of Colombian MCing.

  1. Pulsatron (3:49)
  2. Maestro Del Kiosco (4:10)
Review: The latest essential missive on San Francisco-based Cumbia label Discos Mas comes from a previously unheard artist: confirmed vintage drum machine and fuzzy psych-guitar lover Pancrudo. The producer's vinyl debut, which has been pressed in limited numbers on gorgeous marbled vinyl, includes two impressively retro-futurist workouts. Check first languid and decidedly psychedelic A-side "Pulsatron", a hip-hop tempo kaleidoscopic dream that sounds like Harry Nillson after a few too many swigs of liquid acid and a fistful of hallucinatory chili peppers. Pancrudo returns to his cumbia roots on flipside "Maestro Del Kiosco", which wraps wonderfully fuzzy, boogaloo-era guitars round a shuffling rhythm track.

Cat: MAS 028. Rel: 29 Aug 19
International
  1. Vamos A La Playa (3:41)
  2. Sabor De La Cumbia (2:39)
Review: Cumbia champs Philthy Dronez have been turning out their quirky and curious takes on the genre since 2005. For their next outing on San Fran's Disco Mas they link with Su Brigada De La Cumbia for a brace of bonkers beats. Opener "Vamos A La Playa" is characterised by a big and wonky accordion line that reminds us of global dance smash "Heater" by Samim from a few years ago. It's as silly as it is fun, while "Sabor De La Cumbia" is a much heavier and grittier affair. Shades of digital dub define the grooves while a rather haunting lead keeps you on edge as it trundles along.

Cat: MAS 018. Rel: 30 Oct 17

  1. Fin Del Mundo (3:02)
  2. Quemame (3:57)
Review: Given recent events around the globe, it feels a little like the end of the world may be fast approaching. Disco Mas's latest signing, Sister Mas, seems to agree. By apocalyptic pop standards, "Fin Del Mundo" is surprisingly jolly - even if the track's bouncy Cumbia rhythms, fuzz-laden guitars and low-slung post-punk elements do tend towards the maudlin and macabre. Speaking of post-punk, flipside "Quemame" sounds like an eyeliner-clad new wave pop moment from that period. Think jaunty, Chakk style saxophones, bustling ESG bass, glistening surf guitars and half-chanted, half-sung female vocals. It's undoubtedly a recipe for success.
