Hold On (12")
Cat: DIN 07. Rel: 22 Oct 14
  1. Hold On
  2. Breakin Out
  3. Keep Walkin
  4. Late Night
  5. Bad Ways
Review: Fran Mela's Dog In The Night label continues it's haphazard assault on our affections with a seventh release so far this year coming from French producer 45 ACP. Otherwise known as D.K., Parisian Dang Khoa has experienced something of a creative rebirth this year after a few years working as Darabi alongside Low Jack, with releases on Antinote, Odd Frequencies and Get The Curse. This being Dog In The Night, Khoa has reserved his most bugged out productions for the five track Hold On EP and anyone that's dipped their toes in the label's previous output will most definitely approve. If you like your house music to sound like it's on the cusp of all out malfunction then cuts like "Hold On" and "keep Walking" are likely to pepper your sets for months to come.

  2. Brike Lane
  3. Vertigo
  4. Toys Slip
  5. Let Disco
Review: The curiously named Dog In The Night Records makes quite a splash with this impressive first EP, with IFM member Fran Mela stepping out under the new Robert Crash alias. The five tracks that make up this record come from the straight to tape school of analogue production, revelling in their lopsided rhythms and muddy textures. The A-side offers an alternative journey through famous London nightspots; "Candem Town" combines inebriated synth lines with a strung out vocal to an effect similar to that seen on Ron Morelli's recent Hospital excursions, while "Brike Lane" offers a sinister combination of deep chords and lurching bass among its scratchy percussion. The high pitched, rubbery techno of "Vertigo" and "Toys Slip" recall the wiry productions of Greg Beato while "Let Disco" staggers around like a drunken Funkineven jam. An impressive debut from a producer to watch.

  1. Hot Nois
  2. Listen You
  3. Natil Box
  4. Savin Biag
Review: For the third time in 2014, Italian producer and IFM member Fran Mela dons his Robert Crash guise for a trip into the worlds of analogue techno and industrial-strength acid house. Clear hints of Armando, Virgo Four and early Belgian techno can be heard in the cut-up stabs, rolling basslines and jackin' grooves of "Not Nois" and TB-303-powered "Listen You". There's a deeper, woozier feel about "Natil Box", which combines brilliantly loose drum machine programming with some gently spacey chords. Finally, Schito returns to the acid with "Savin Blag", a sweaty jacker reminiscent of Larry Heard's work under the Gherkin Jerks moniker. Dog In The Night one of this year's best new labels? You better believe it!

  1. Suda
  2. Clap Your Spenny
  3. Ruut Place
  4. After Trax
  5. Fat Buz
Review: "Who is Robert Crash?" went the Ben UFO tweet in response to Under Party, the debut transmission from the Dog In The Night label earlier this year. The answer is of course Italian producer Fran Mela, and the IFM member is back with more mind crushers as Robert Crash for the mystery label's third release. Friends to Friends again focuses on the rough and the raw style of house music, throwing discarded disco samples and strange vocals into ragged beat tracks laid down straight to muddy tape. Whilst there is plenty of music right now that could be described in this manner, none of it sounds quite as deranged or unpredictable as "Clap Your Spenny" or "Ruut Place".

Review: It's been a while since we last saw some music from Marcelo Napoletano committed to wax, so kudos to his IFM partner Fran Mela for coaxing some new Michael Ferragosto cuts out of the Italian for the Dog In The Night label he's involved with. DITN has had a killer first year all told, and the provocatively titled Pissing On Your Head is certainly up with their best releases, with a five track draw of the deepest and rawest Italian house crucially executed a knowing sense of humour. "It's House Funk Universal" and "Ra-Sciiid" are certified beat down material.

Review: Beau Wanzer and Ghost Arcade's Dan Jugel first joined forces under the Juzer pseudonym late last year, delivering the largely well received Horseplay 12" for The Corner. Here they reignite their partnership with a 12" for Dog In The Night Records. They kick things off with the title track, all thrusting beats, powerful sub-bass and fizzing electronic melodies. "Maniac Hop" has a similar feel, introducing some choice acid touches amongst the skittish electronics and thumping beats to keep things fresh. Finally, they veer more towards L.I.E.S territory on "Fire Marshall", a suitably distorted, percussion-heavy stomper built around particularly sludgy drums.

  1. Luv 4 All
  2. Song 4 Whale
  3. Egyptian Cat
Review: Out of nowhere Robert Crash's Dog In The Night label has swiftly took up it's position at the forefront of frazzled club cuts, calling on some lesser known or indeed unknown artists thus far for a series of 12"s that have caught the ear of selectors such as Ben UFO and Will Bankhead. There is little clue as to the identity of RB, but their triplet of productions here fit right in on Dog In The Night and the humour the label has shown throughout their prior output. the brutal acid slabs making up "Luv 4 All" is anything other than what the track title suggests, while "Song 4 Whale" is nothing like the kind of new age whale song you might expect, combining bloated vocal echoes with lo-fi beats. Both these barely prepare you for the turbulent onslaught of razor sharp drums and atonal bleeps that is release highlight "Egyptian Cat" however.

Review: Every now and again a record turns up with the minimum of information, and sends the Juno review team into frenzy of excitement. This apparent debut from the unknown WV certainly falls into this category. The second release from the Dog in the Night label, the four tracks on this 12" sound just as raw and riotous as the record from Robert Crash (IFM's Fran Mela) that inaugurated proceedings earlier this year. If you think back to the emotions felt when the needle dropped on that first White Material record back in the summer of 2012, it's a similar feeling of excitable uncertainty that grips you as the high octane box jam "Detour" thrusts into gear. What follows is at times loose ("Hangman") others alien ("Shapes" sounds a bit like Jamal Moss) but always quality.
