Review: Ilario Alicante now makes his full debut Drumcode. He's established himself as a key player among a new breed of techno artists and really is one of the brightest stars in the game. Opening with "Times" Alicante gets straight into top gear, rolling through six minutes of pure power: this is a peak time tool if we've ever heard one and is set to be heard across dancefloors worldwide this year. "Awakened" is one you may have heard from label head honcho Adam Beyer's sets of late; rampant synths and mesmerising vocal hooks all make it one hell of a journey. "Sense" is a more industrial affair, led by its chunky bassline this one is a right trip too. The EP finishes off with "Apogeo", packed with hypnotic siren tones and acute percussion.

  1. Living The Lie (6:55)
Review: The mighty Drumcode label sure knows how to serve up the supersized, massively heavyweight techno rollers. And a master of that particular form is Patrick Berg. He is afforded the luxury of serving up just one tune to this new, one sided, etched 12". 'Living The Lie' is as bulky as they come - the glitchy clasp peel of the rumbling bass, subtle trance stabs bring that rising sense of euphoria and the mounters kick just hammer the whole thing home. It is an epic tune for epic party moments, especially once the diva vocal rings out.

Cat: DC 200. Rel: 27 Feb 19
Techno
  1. Teach Me (Amelie Lens main mix) (6:24)
  2. Teach Me (Amelie Lens Acid mix) (5:25)
Review: For his first outing of 2019, Adam Beyer has turned over the parts to his 2014 single "Teach Me" to Belgium's first lady of banging, acid-fuelled techno, Amelie Lens. She subsequently serves up two throbbing, peak-time ready revisions, with the A-side "Main Mix" offering a near perfect blend of booming, kick-drum driven beats, military snare fills, cut-up late night vocal samples and distorted, mind-altering riffs. As the title suggests, the flipside "Acid Remix" sees Lens indulge her love of mind-altering TB-303 acid lines, brilliantly wrapping them around a springier drum track, EBM-influenced melodic motifs and more pulsating, manipulated vocal loops.

  1. Dirty Lagoon (6:58)
  2. Code Is The Code (7:30)
  3. Dub Embassy (5:03)
Review: Drumcode titan Adam Beyer is back in business with some of that monolithic sound he's made such a prominent force in global techno. 'Dirty Lagoon' is a slamming monster of a track with daggering rave stabs and hefty kicks to fill any stadium you care to think of. 'Code Is The Code' has a slightly deeper tint, but it's no slouch on the full-fat production all the same. 'Dub Embassy' takes things towards a trancey kind of sound, all swirling synth lines and pinging sound FX, but never too far from that core Drumcode sound we all love so dearly.

  4. Restore My Soul (DJ Rush remix) (4:29)
Review: Two right legends of techno unite here for the latest release on Drumcode. Label chief Adam Beyer presents 'Restore My Soul' featuring Chicago hard techno veteran DJ Rush, their relationship stretching back nearly three decades from when they both started out in the' 90s. The title track is aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor; a seething, mental groove featuring Rush's stern vocal delivery atop, before taking the energy levels into the peak time on the adrenalised thrasher 'Control'. Over on the flip, you are treated to a rework of the title track by DJ Rush himself in his typically stomping and orotund style.

  2. Timmo - "Muzik" (6:11)
  3. Pig&Dan - "La Bruja" (6:37)
  4. Julian Jeweil - "Nasa" (6:11)
Review: Some serious peak time weapons for the main room on offer here, from the ever reliable Swedish label Drumcode. Usual heroes of the label such as Luigi Madonna, Sam Paganini and Joseph Capriati step aside for some other equally reliable staples. On the A, side label boss Adam Beyer teams up with Enrico Sangiuliano on the evocative and life affirming "Preset Heaven" which takes its cues from early trance with its amazing chord progression. It is something more typical of the label next, on the pummelling warehouse stomp of "Muzik" by Bulgaria's Timmo. On the flip, there's more trance nostalgia on offer again - this time from legends Pig & Dan on the hypnotic/melodic bliss of "La Bruja" which we could imagine melting the minds of festival crowds well into the new year. Finally they save the best for last with French peak time specialist Julian Jeweil, serving up the furious, tunneling and strobe-lit ultraviolence of "Nasa" which will have your adrenaline going from the first beat. It has been a stellar year for the powerhouse label, with great releases by Moby, Dubfire and newcomer Layton Giordani.

  2. Algorithm (5:35)
Review: Veteran producer Dubfire certainly requires no introduction, nor does the mighty Drumcode who the American producer appears for here in collaboration with Argentina's Flug (REKIDS/Suara) on these two serious tracks. The A side cut 'Rampart' is fierce tribal techno banger reminiscent of Detroit legend Gary Martin, a workout that's geared for those proper heads-down moments on the dancefloor. Equally as austere on the B-side we have the locomotive stomp of "Algorithm" loaded directly off the factory floor with its dubby and greyscale execution.

Review: You can always count on the mighty Drumcode stable for proper peak time techno tools, and it's no more Mr Nice Guy on this one - we can tell you that much. Industry heavyweight Dubfire of Sci+ Tec fame teaming here with rising Argentinian Flug on the austere warehouse techno banger 'Rubber' which will pummel you into submission via its seething acidic snarl, underpinned by steely rapid-fire rhythms. On the flip, prepare to lose yourself under the strobe light on the mentalist tunnel vision of 'Metanoia' where its powerful locomotive groove follows a hypnotic and droning lead - deep into the Sunday morning hours.

  4. Magic Sunset (6:12)
Review: REKIDS staple and Uncage main man Marco Faraone continues with his relentless output on this new one for Drumcode, where his big room techno sound makes a more than welcome addition to the catalogue. 'Our Freedom' is a peak time anthem powered by a massive Reese bassline and contrasted by serene melodies - to a backdrop of pummelling rhythms. Similarly 'Burn Down' on the flip is a seething, menacing thriller that is unusually complimented by lush female vocals, while final track 'Magic Sunset' goes out all guns blazing; its euphoric energy could indeed work as its title suggests.

  1. Brian's Proper Dun One (7:13)
  2. Wait A Second (feat MC R1bbz) (6:41)
  3. Trance, Init? (6:41)
Review: Alan Fitzpatrick returns to Drumcode, marking his first appearance since late 2016 when he remixed Moby's hit "Porcelain".The release opens with "Brian's Proper Dun One", a track which caused a storm on his Twitter profile when he first started playing it last year. Loaded with sharp and pounding drums, this is a no holds barred, certified main room anthem! "Wait A Second" has been getting a lot of play on Drumcode Radio of late. This rave inspired track takes a raw, stripped back approach and delivers a killer blow. Alan sampled the vocals of MC r1bbz from an LTJ Bukem tape pack from the early 90s and the record tips its cap to early jungle raves around the M25. The release closes with "Trance, Init?" a homage to Fitzpatrick's days as a raver before he became a DJ. The breakdown is sure to be a hands in the air moment at festivals all over the globe this summer.

We Don't Know Anything Yet
  1. We Don't Know Anything Yet (Adam Beyer remix) (6:45)
  2. We Don't Know Anything Yet (6:24)
Review: Alan Fitzpatrick and Joel Mull are about as big as it gets in the so-called business techno scene. Somehow, they have never collaborated before but now do so on the mighty Drumcode, with boss man Adam Beyer also getting involved on the remix. 'We Don't Know Anything Yet' is big room techno with big room melodies unfolding up top like an astral explosion. The drums are of course supersized and super powerful. The Adam Beyer remix is dialed back somewhat to a more gritty groove, with slapping hits and flashes of synth. The whole board of techno directors impress with this one.

Hyper World
Cat: DC 243. Rel: 06 Jul 21
Techno
  1. Hyper World (6:27)
  2. Astro (6:04)
Review: Given that it's called 'Hyper World', you'd expect New York producer Layton Giordani's latest single - his first since 2019 Green Velvet collaboration 'Fuzion' - you'd expect it to a sparkling, full-throttle affair capable of rocketing us to the fringes of deep space. It is, of course, with the Drumcode regular delivering a title track that confidently peppers a stomping, big room techno beat with psy7chedelic acid lines, fuzzy synth riffs and starry electronics. Fans of Drumcode's trance-tinged take on techno will absolutely love it. Flipside 'Astro' is arguably even more mind-altering with Giordani wrapping rising riffs and dark, foreboding noises around thumping drums and a wayward, twisted main motif reminiscent of Jam and Spoon's legendary remixes of trance classic 'Age of Love'.

  3. Body Language (6:22)
  4. Black Mirror (7:38)
Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his all-star collaboration with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet, "Space Date", Layton Giordani returns to Drumcode with his first fresh solo material since 2017. All four tracks are formidably floor-friendly in the "big room techno" style that has turned the Drumcode crew into global stars in recent years. Giordani begins with the tribal drums, atmospheric chords, acid stabs and bleeping synth melodies of "New York City To Amsterdam", before doffing a cap to Italo-disco on the electro-techno chug of "Enter The Stratosphere". Over on side B, "Body Language" is an angular, acid-fired peak-time thumper, while closing cut "Black Mirror" sees him fix gated, trance style riffs to a typically throbbing, bass-heavy techno groove.

Review: While Dutch DJ/producer Oliver Heldens may be more well known for his future house exploits, he has been cultivating a love of techno separate from his mainstage persona as HI-LO, with releases on Octopus and Filth on Acid. His latest comes courtesy of the ever reliable Drumcode in the form of the Hypnos EP on which he gets serious on two absolutely massive tracks. On the Al first side you have the brooding rave drama of 'Hypnos' that's absolutely geared for peaking out under the strobe light, it's quite reminiscent of Kevin Saunderson's brand of Tronik House, as is B side offering 'Hera' which takes a much more euphoric turn with its epic chord progression sure to get the hands in the air.

  3. Reverse (6:16)
Review: Julian Jeweil returns to Drumcode with his first EP in two years, nailing the label's buildup-drop ethos with dreamworld textures, deep thumping kicks and delayed stabs. Jeweil refreshingly brings new experimentation to the format: 'Time' has an especially resonant kick, perhaps ousting the top spot for most rumbly techno bass drum we've heard in recent years. Meanwhile, farty electro clashy techno is scaled on the B-side track 3 'Reverse', which with badman precision and a delicate hand, throws us straight back in time.

  1. Together One Time
Review: Drumcode roll out plenty of high functioning techno EPs, and every now and then drop special one -sided 12"s that they, presumably, think are worth of the sole focus of a slab. This latest one comes courtesy of long time scene mainstays Kaiserdisco. This act has been at the heart of the move towards big, astral, melodic techno taking over but here they keep it fairly raw and paired back. 'Together One Time' rolls on heavy drums, with coarse hi hats and blasts of industrial synth adding the brain frazzling texture. A big sample from an iconic St Germain tune adds the only colour but is surely enough to make sure floors go wild.

The latest artists to step up to tweak the hugely successful formula are Alex Lentini and Stomp Boxx. hey pair up on four fresh cuts that right from the off show some nice invention, with fizzing textures and wooden, block beats defining 'Solstice.' 'Split The Noise' is all about those big, panel beaten techno drum loops and 'Azimuth' surges forwards on waves of static electricity with some neat synth bubbles hidden within. 'Equimulate' closes out one of the better Drumcode EPs for some time.

Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Review: Inspired by a trip back to his homeland last year, Amsterdam-based Italian Luigi Madonna presents the Italian Shocks EP. The Drumcode staple returns to the label to follow up last year's Mad World EP with good friend Roberto Capuano. The title track is a cerebral techno tool aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor, followed by the steely and pummelling workout 'This Is The Future' which is perfect to bring on the peak time vibe. Over on the flip, 'Enveloping Times' is exactly the kind of austere tackle the moment calls for, then Madonna goes out all guns blazing on the powerful strobe-lit frenzy of 'Interfrequencies' and its gnarly Reese bassline.

Review: Igor Tchkotoua & Dan Duncan met on a flight to Spain and the rest as they say: is history. Their driving minimal/tech house sound has only gotten stronger over the years, culminating in this release for Adam Beyer's esteemed home of hard techno Drumcode. The classic rave techno of "Chemistry" is up there with anything that Alan Fitzpatrick or Special Request have done of late with its adrenalised warehouse euphoria. It's no more Mr. Nice Guy after this though. The powerful stomp of "Ukraine" is Berghain ready with its industrial strength rhythms and harsh static blasts, compressed between doom laden, dubby stabs. Finally on the flip, the brooding dancefloor drama of "Devotion" signals the end with its sinister and mesmerising melodies: reminiscent of Stephan Bodzin yet still powered away by a Berlin style stomp beneath.

Review: Unbelievably, Drumcode Records celebrates its 25th year in business in 2021. Adam Beyer's popular imprint has already delivered a swathe of must-check releases this year, and this collaborative outing from Pig & Dan and Victor Ruiz is another that label fans would do well to take note of. A-side 'Consciousness' is particularly potent, with the trio adding gnarly, mind-melting, dark room-ready riffs to a throbbing, trance-inducing techno groove. If tech-trance/neo-trance isn't your thing, turn to the flip. They're you'll find the moody and stomping big room techno of 'Music Takes You' - all doom-laden stabs and kick-drum driven heaviness - and the more melodious, colourful and rushing peak-time bliss of 'Silk', whose lengthy breakdowns are likely to send shivers down the spines of suitably refreshed dancers.

Review: Packed with percussive energy, thrusting basslines and mind-altering electronic motifs, this collaboration between long-serving Swede Patrick Seich and rising star Sandra Mosh deserves to be heard by far more than the Drumcode faithful. The pair set their stall out on EP opener 'Rhythmic Reflection', where whispered vocal snippets and psychedelic acid lines rise above breathless techno drums and a throbbing sequenced bassline, before opting for a dark, wayward and more intense techno sound on 'Synchrony'. They intensify their collaborative sound further on 'PPMV1', in the process making great use of twisted electronic riffs and hissing ride cymbals, while closing cut 'Soft Light' brilliantly fuses creepy electronic melodies, trance-inducing TB-303 lines, bouncy drums and clandestine chords.
