You Got Me Running

You Got Me Running (6:40)
Release The Tension (7:22)
Celebrate (4:12)
Review: "Music Is The Answer", Colonel Abrams' landmark 1984 debut release, was not his first stab at stardom. In fact, earlier the same year he'd recorded a series of dubbed-out demos with Boyd Jarvis at Timmy Regisford's apartment. Here, those demos - mastered from dusty eight-track tape - get a public airing for the first time. Despite their vintage, all three tracks still sound phenomenally soulful and futuristic, as if all three men were laying down a blueprint for deep house (albeit with the addition of the delay-laden drums that were such a feature of NYC productions during the period). "You Got Me Running", in particular, is superb, with Abrams' putting in a superbly impassioned but bittersweet vocal performance.

Splinters
Review: Say hello to the Bridge & Tunnel Kids, a new project from a name familiar to fans of Greek label Echovolt. New Jerseyite Jorge 'Professor Genius' Velez is behind Bridge & Tunnel Kids and the producer returns to Echovolt having scored the label's debut release back in 2009 as part of PG&S alongside William Burnett. Just to keep it that bit cuter, the WT Records boss is also present here in remix form. Both return to Echovolt with the label fully established as a Mediterranean ally of Creme, LIES et al and with their own profiles raised high. Velez's three cuts here present a raw yet poised side to him, with lead track "Persistence" reminiscent of a slack jawed Legowelt, whilst the Willie Burns remix of the title track is equally fuzzy edged and smudged out.

Inspiration (6:15)
Ambient Underground (4:24)
Dharma (5:04)
Moment (5:38)
Review: Arguably no producer made a greater contribution to the Italian dream house sound - that most loved-up of deep house sub-genres - than Don Carlos, AKA Carlo Troja. If you need proof, then we advise checking out this collection of overlooked gems hand-picked by Echovelt Records. Opener "Inspiration" (taken from 2001's The Music On My Mind LP but reminiscent of his early '90s work) and closer "Moment" are both pure distillations of the colourful, sauced-eyed ethos of dream house. "Ambient Underground" - one of three selections from 1993's Aqua - is more tech-tinged and hypnotic, despite the presence of a spine-tingling breakdown, while "Dharma" is closer to his New Jersey-inspired work with Stefano Tirone under the Montego Bay alias.

Orchidea Nera
Review: While it would be nice to think that this EP of melodic analogue techno and shuffling deep house was the work of hyperactive British eccentric Richard O'Brien (less so the irritating Ed Tudor-Pole), Crystal Maze is in fact Amsterdam-based duo G-string and Marco Antonio Spaventi. Having previously impressed with releases on aDepth Audio and Bio Rhythm, they now find themselves on Greek imprint Echovolt, a label famed for the depth and variety of their analogue explorations. All three tracks ripple with feverish humidity, from the Mood Hut/Future Times-ish tropical pagan shuffle of "Orchidea Nera" (think Confused House meets the Belleville Three) and sumptuous "DECAY", to the apocalyptic, droning pulse of "XR84".

Bailando (8:07)
Aquamarine (7:25)
Review: Previously, Polish brothers from other mothers Earth Traxx and Newborn Jr have both released killer EPs that look to the "dream house" era for inspiration. It should be no surprise, then, that this superb collaborative two-tracker looks to the same loved-up period of European dance music for inspiration. "Bailando", for example, boasts an attractive and saucer-eyed mixture of rolling organ riffs, dreamy chords, rubbery bottom end and the kind of whistling synthesizer melodies originally heard on new age ambient records. It's very good, but it could be argued that the restless flipside "Aquamarine" is even better. It, too, boasts plenty of dream house flourishes - sparkling piano riffs, swirling and brightly coloured electronics, and so on - but thrusts itself forward at a much more techno-centric pace.

Finedrawn Overcast (5:30)
Sole Eterna (4:51)
Echoplex (6:16)
Review: Athens based label Echovolt return with Vancouver's Electric Sound Broadcast aka Elka who delivers some lush/lo-fi soul- techno as he did for that fine EP for Pacific Rhythm last year. It's back to the good all days with Juno 106 basslines, the vintage hiss of old drum computers and FM pads on the rather nice "You Can Be" while "Finedrawn Overcast" does it's best impression of early Larry Heard circa '86. On the flip there's more gold on the deep acid journey "Echoplex". Will certainly appeal to retroverts into Acido/SUED or likewise the Meme house of Lobster Theremin.

Sun High
One Time For Your Mind
Uncertain Tragedy
Review: Greek label Echovolt continue to impress with their output as they coax some all new material from Baltimore based producer Entro Senestre. Responsible for one of our favourite contributions to the WT imprint in the form of "La Caccia", the sense of fragile analogue emotion that ran through that is matched by the four "slamming neo-underground dance tracks" Senestra provides for the sixth Echovolt release. Opening track "Flashbacks" plays brilliantly with elements of rhythmic release, as jackhammer drums build steamily before giving way to the spiralling melodics repeatedly throughout. Alongside this "Sun High" is no less frenetic, with Senestre's attentions focused on the ever cascading hi-hats and effervescent manipulation of those kaleidoscopic melodic touches. "One Time For Your Mind" shows Senestra in a much darker mood, tensely driving through 808 laden industrial techno that ripples with lysergic energy, while "Uncertain Tragedy" is a supreme slalom through a tape saturated future vision of Detroit techno. Senestre might not be as familiar to you as previous Echovolt incumbents such as Legowelt and LIES but this EP fully maintains the standards they set.

Ghoul
Revenge
Phase (D Marc Cantu Ghoul remix)
Review: Gijs Poortman aka G String hits 2013 head on for Greek imprint Echovolt with the Burial Grounds EP, ahead of a forthcoming appearance on Dutch ambient-cum-dub techno imprint Field Recordings . The opening track "Ghoul" thrums with an 808 heavy low end and choral bassline, allowing distant voices to wallow ghostly in the background. "Revenge" slightly lightens in mood with the use of African percussion, although the introduction of side chained synths, acidic bass sequences and drawn out leads return the track something a little more unsettling. D'Marc Cantu's additional Ghoul remix to "Phase" takes up the flip, using tubular phase effects that sweep over its percussive elements, further employing jacked snare hits and off kilter claps to add some sinister pace.

Piano Track (Ray Piano) (4:58)
Review: Stomp! The latest in Echovolt's infrequent but essential reissues finds the Athens label puts the spotlight of US house producer Boyd Jarvis and three rare cuts that demand your attention!! Originally released as a limited one sided 12" on Shelter back in 1997, "Stomp!" suffered from a less than professional mastering job which really counter acted it's deep mind bending qualities. It's been newly remastered for this Echovolt release off original DAT tapes that were apparently gathering dust in Boyd's basement for the past three decades! It's complemented by "In The Jungle" and "Piano Track", two deep, grinding, instrumental workouts from Boyd's early '90s period that are every bit as crucial.

Ophelia
Review: Starting to make diversions from his beloved $tinkworx moniker, JT Stewart makes his second outing under his own name for Greece's Echovolt label, dealing in sumptuous analogue synthesis in a strange vein somewhere between house and techno, although certainly not tech house. It's richly melodic stuff, but also detuned just enough to add some excitement and mystery to the mix. "Vandaleur" struts along with a sci-fi-horror tone, while "Forgotten Hauler" gets a bit rougher in the percussion department while the synths pound out a Detroit manifesto. "Ophelia" on the B-Side takes a more relaxed affair as the groove skips playfully and light piano and string pads define the atmosphere.

Review: The traces of mutual influence that can be jotted between the camps in Washington, New York, Den Haag and London via imprints new and old in Creme, Future Times and Long Island Electrical Systems should be expanded to Greece and include fledgling label Echovolt. In its short life, the Athens based imprint has already graced us with releases from LIES, Steve Summers and Professor Genius and their latest is a true mark of their ambition. It sees Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt return to the label for a full release, having remixed the LIES track "Comeback Dust", and continue his rich vein of form this year. The Poverties Paradise EP finds Wolfers in a somewhat pensive mood, splaying utopian next century jack material from his enviable array of analogue synths and drum machines, with "Horizons" the one real departure towards something more electrifying. Despite his prolific nature, it seems like there's plenty of inspiration left inside Danny Wolfer's brain and long may the status quo remain!

Review: Echovolt boss Ilias Pitsios has gone on record with his effusive praise for Miltiades, telling the Test Pressing site the unheralded button pusher was "probably the best producer from Greece as far as deep house / techno stuff is concerned." Anyone that checked Miltiades' debut 12" for the Nous label last year will attest to that however, and it makes for great news to see the producer's latest offering come via Echovolt. There is a sense of simplicity realised in crystalline perfection that drives forth productions from Miltiades, and it's in abundance on the three original productions that feature on the Stmete EP. This record is made all the more tempting by a typically star-gazing remix of the title track from Gifted & Blessed under his lesser used alias The Reflektor.

Crimes Of The Heart
Oak Park
Review: Man of mystery Paradise Box recently impressed with a thrilling chunk of retro-futurist proto-house revivalism on Hot Shot Sounds' excellent Rock The Box compilation. Here, he unleashes his debut EP proper - a four-track salvo for Greece's Echovolt label that mines similarly vintage inspirations. The A-side boasts vocal and instrumental takes on "Reel Nitty Gritty" - an undulating concoction full of winding synthesized saxophone and analogue-sounding melodies that feels like a cross between early Chicago and New Jersey deep house, with a little contemporary fizz mixed in. Flip for the Legowelt-ish cosmic, acid-flecked darkness of "Crimes of the Heart" and "Oak Park", an attractive, synth-laden foray into melody-rich analogue deep house pastures.

WereHouse (Legowelt remix)
WereHouse (original mix)
Review: The quite prolific Italian producer Simoncino adds Echovolt to his already impressive array of record label outlets - Skylax, On The Prowl, Mathematics and Quintessential is a pretty flossy CV by any standards. The Greek label themselves have also impressed with every step they take in their short release history to date, and Simoncino's Werehouse EP continues Echovolt's remit of releasing house music steeped in analogue detail. "Chicago" commences like an off cut from John Carpenter's recording studio before settling into a bewitching melange of chiming melodies, crisp drum patterns and gushing pads. Alongside it "Ocean" applies vast swathes of analogue texture over the rough hewn drum sounds that filter through the run out grooves of countless Mathematics releases and there are of course plenty of seaside effects washed over the top. The flip holds the title track as well as a remix from Echovolt regular and Juno hero Legowelt, which is reason enough to investigate!

Where Did U Go (original)
Where Did U Go (dub)
Review: Simoncino is so prolific we have a wager going in the office that the Italian isn't actually human, but rather some kind of Chicago House obsessed cyborg programmed to skillfully manipulate an array of analogue machinery. Releasing two 12"s in one week only strengthens these odds, with the excellent Greek label Echovolt the conduit through which Simoncino presents his latest experiments on the house sound. "Where Did U Go" sees Simoncino team up with legendary UK vocalist Julian Jonah - a man who has worked with Paul Hardcastle and 187 Lockdown in his time - for some shimmering house business that brings to mind classic Larry Heard or Ten City. As sublime as the A Side version is, the DJ's will probably favour the accompanying Dub version.

Review: It was just over a year ago that Athens label Echovolt dipped their toes into the reissue market with an official new edition of NYC house classic Giv Ya Luv Show Ya Luv by Vil-N-X. After a swathe of more contemporary-focused releases, Echovolt returns with their second reissue which finds them focus on some early '90s gems from the New Jersey house scene. Scholars of the era will no doubt know Wayne Gardiner for his output as Logic and Classic Man for iconic labels such as Nervous and Strictly Rhythm, but prior to that he slipped out two 12"s for NJ label Right Area Records as Sound Source. This edition for Echovolt features cuts from both those records that have been fully remastered from the og DAT tapes! Despite being over 20 years old, all four productions sound remarkably fresh, not least the closing "Jazz House" (Element mix) - check that sax!

Review: Echovolt has released a lot of fine electronic music over the last seven years, but surprisingly Messages From A Better Destiny marks their first foray into the album market. It comes from up-start Greek outfit Templeyard Studios, and marks the duo's recording debut. Apparently "the result of research on another way of understanding the human soul", the album's six thematic tracks mix modular sounding electronics, L.I.E.S style industrial techno crustiness, dystopian electro rhythms and spacey synthesizer textures. It's a mixture that guarantees macabre, end-of-days intensity, but also fleeting moments of sonic beauty.

Review: Since it's foundation in 2009, the Athens based Echovolt Records has established itself as the Hellenic branch of a loose international network of labels and artists that includes the likes of Rush Hour, LIES and WT Records. Having dipped into double figures release wise, Echovolt expand their remit with the launch of an official reissues series that the label hopes will offer some insight into the sounds that shaped their identity. First up in the series is the underground NYC house smash '"Give Ya Luv Show Ya Luv" by Vil-N-X; originally released on Island Noyze Records back in 1992, this edition of the release draws on two highly sought after mixes of the original which have been fully remastered and pressed loud. If you enjoyed the series of classic NYC house reissues on Rush Hour last year then you need to check this!
