Review: Highly revered jazz innovator and famous spiritualist Alice Coltrane recorded her 1972 album Lord of Lords in California and released it originally on Impulse! Records. It is a slow-building affair that was the last in a trio of hugely orchestral works that took jazz to grand new heights. It hums with cosmic energy and has a throb of organic sound at its core with cinematic, widescreen atmosphere that place you right at the centre of the American's musical universe. It is dense, too, with 25 instruments all featuring and vying for attention with violins, cellos and violas all working in harmony.

Review: It's not often that a previous unheard recording of a giant of jazz is found loitering in the depths of someone's personal collection, but that's the case here. These recordings of legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans, laid to high-quality tape in 1964, were discovered last year in the personal archive of jazz musician Ole Matthiessen. Now fully mastered, it's a genuine unheard "Holy grail" - a set of recordings that show the versatility and quality of Evans' playing. Basically, it's a fantastic collection of piano jazz numbers, with Evans either playing solo, or accompanied by little more than a drummer and a double bassist. If you love jazz, you need this in your life.

Review: Blues legend John Lee Hooker released It Serves You Right To Suffer 1966, back when the blues and jazz impresario had a short-lived folk music division, with the tagline "the new wave of folk is on Impulse!". Thus the only album Hooker made for the label, we hear Hooker perform in exquisite, stereo-surrounded detail here, his distinctive deep drawl poking through a wide-mixed production palette and singing thematically in a vindictive spirit, urging the subject of the album to get up and move on from the past. With Panama Francis on drums, Milt Hinton on bass and Barry Galbraith on second guitar, the album is some of the best John Lee Hooker material with a band that you're likely to come across.

Review: Self-styled 'jazz detetcive' Zev Feldman heralds a new series entitled Deep Digs Music with this collaboration with Elemental Music, releasing a never before heard performance from Ahmad Jamal live in Seattle in the early 60s. This official reissue has been overseen by Jamal himself, carefully restored from original tape reels and remastered to ensure the finest fidelity for your listening pleasure. The release comes with extensive new photos, essays from Eugene Holley Jr and Zev Feldman and interviews with Jamal and others.

Review: Picking up the thread from volume one, Elemental Music and Zev Feldman's Deep Digs Music team up to present another selection of incredible live recordings of jazz icon Ahmad Jamal. These sessions were recorded between 1965 and 1966 at The Penthouse in Seattle. The original audio has been transferred from the master tape reels, with Jamal himself lending his oversight and insight in the form of an interview. Along with the first volume from prior years, this serves as a wonderful document of Jamal's unerring talent at the peak of his musical powers.

He is one of the soul scene's most unique players, a legendary vibraphone stylist and man who oozes cosmic funk. His He's Coming album is arguably his high water mark, one that has had its many great tracks pillaged and pilfered by countless hi- hop acts of the years. It's a record that brims with invention as it looks to the stars and features magical Rhodes chords next to steamy, introspective vocals, irresistible grooves and moments of emotional depth as well as dancefloor delights. This deluxe version comes on limited heavyweight ax via Elemental Music.

Review: The story goes that Donna Summer wasn't t happy when she heard the final version of her most iconic hit 'I Feel Love'. She didn't like how sexualised her vocal had become next to the iconic synths sounds. No such problem with this album which has much morels and orchestra sound on the lavish opener and title cut. It's an epic, 16-minute plus track that takes up one whole side, while the flip side tunes re slow and sentimental ('Full Of Emptiness'), disco-tinged and funky fresh ('Need-a-man Blues') and beautifully tender lullabies ('Whispering Waves'.)

Review: During the 1960s, jazz marimba maestro Cal Tjader performed at Seattle's Penthouse Jazz Club countless times, with many of these performances - made with various quintets and a dizzying array of sidemen, sidewomen and guest performances - being recorded for posterity. This superb double-disc set showcases these atmospheric, often lively recordings for the first time. Tjader is naturally the star throughout, dizzying the audience with mazy and mind-blowing Marimba solos, but at various points he steps back and lets his musical collaborators share the spotlight. For the most part, the tracks are energetic and up-tempo, giving the whole thing a giddy, celebratory feel that's always alluring.
