  6. Diipside (5:33)
Review: F Comms is one of techno 's most influential early labels and its 25th anniversary reissue series is reminding us why. Next up to get a second time in the spotlight is Deepside's self titled EP from 1992. Deepside was Guy Rabiller and Ludovic Navarre. It's a blistering one, too, with twitchy synths over hulking great kick drums. Rave stabs and twisted basslines all bring that old school energy, while 'Get On Your Own Way' (Trance mix) is a nice one to get lost in when you're coming up. All tracks are mixed by Ludovic Navarre himself, who is if course best known as St Germain, so the quality is superbly high.

Tolerance EP (remastered)
Cat: 267WS 75133. Rel: 25 Jul 20
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. French (5:44)
  2. IL (6:36)
  3. 111 (4:57)
Review: Before making his name as St Germain, French producer Ludovic Navarre released music under a number of other aliases. One of these was Deepside, originally a 1992 collaboration with Sub System partner Guy Rabiller that quickly became a Navarre solo project. The "Tolerance EP" (1993) was Navarre's first solo Deepside release and has long been considered something of an under-discussed European techno classic. As this reissue proves, it's lost none of its allure. The EP's undisputed highlight remains A-side "French", a glistening, sun-bright chunk of foundational tech-house positivity shot through with Motor City style machine soul and luscious chords aplenty. Elsewhere, "IL" is warm, soft-touch deep techno at its very best, while "111" is a stripped-back acid box jam.

Astral Dreams (remastered)
Cat: 267WS 96133. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Astral Dreams (Speakers mix) (6:11)
  2. Astral Dreams (LFO Lucid mix - previously unreleased) (10:06)
Review: Laurent Garnier is widely regarded not only as one of the nice men in techno, but one of its most iconic and enduring protagonists. His F Comm label has been hugely influential since day one, and in 2020 is celebrating 25 years in operation. To that end, he is remastering and reissuing some of his most classic cuts. Here, it is 'Astral Dreams' from 1994 and his Shot in the Dark album. It is mechanical techno but with warmth and soul, bleeping melodies and a bumping rhythm that gets deep into your bones. The LFO Lucid Mix on the flip is more wonky and unhinged, with a cheeky melodic motif taking you down the rabbit hole.

  1. Flashback (Laboratoire mix) (7:14)
  2. Flashback (Lil Louis Civilized instrumental Painting) (4:38)
  3. Flashback (8:40)
Review: Former chef turned techno legend Laurent Garnier is celebrating 25 years of his mighty label F Comms with a series of special reissues. Next int he spotlight is his own seminal tune 'Flashback.' The a-side is taken up by a Laboratoire Mix that fuses a groaning, textured synth lead with dancing percussion and soulful techno landscaping. The reverse start with Lil Louis's Civilized instrumental 'Painting' which is ripped apart by the sound of a super car's blasting exhaust, then comes the original version, a straight up and business-like dark and moody techno workout.

  4. Aquarius (8:10)
  5. Dance 2 The Music (7:56)
Review: To mark the passing of a quarter of a century since the birth of Eric Morand and Laurent Garnier's influential F Communications label, the long-defunct imprint has returned to deliver 25 re-mastered reissues of important and sought-after releases. "Club Traxx", Garnier's all-action, dancefloor-focussed 1995 EP made in tribute to legendary Parisian venue the Rex Club, is undoubtedly worth its place in the series. There's much to enjoy, from the moody, Motor City style synth-strings and bustling techno grooves of "Side Effects" and the wild, mind-altering stomp of "Ranchando O Bico", to the deep techno dreaminess of "Aquarius", the stab-happy, warehouse-ready thrust of "Pigalle", and the intergalactic, acid-fired call-to-arms that is "Dance 2 The Music". Proper European techno that pays due reverence to the sound's roots; don't sleep!

FCom 25 Selkasaari EP (remastered)

  1. Selkasaari (10:09)
  2. The Vinci (6:47)
  3. Flavatanssit (7:01)
  4. Mello Dick Track (7:00)
Review: Enjoy this remastered reissue on F-Communications of Finnish legend Jori Hulkonnen's much admired EP from 1996, as part of the label's 25th anniversary celebrations. 'Selkasaari Tracks' - Episode 1 was the first of a two part series, featuring such classics like the emotive, hypnotising and jacking title track, the healing hi-tech soul tones of "Flavatanssit" or the soothing late night deep house of B-side cut "Mello Dick Track" which are altogether the perfect zeitgeist of a golden era - for both the imprint and mid nineties house and techno music in general. Certainly one for the old school heads, and for those who didn't know - well now you know!

Cat: 267WT 21133. Rel: 07 Oct 20
Deep House
  1. My Precious Thing (Llorca extended version) (6:09)
  2. My Precious Thing (Rollercone vocal mix) (6:57)
  3. My Precious Thing (Rollercone dub mix) (8:28)
Review: Laurent Garnier's F Communications label is certainly best known for its techno. But over the course of its 25 year history, but it has also put out its fair share of irresistible house music. The latest subject of its ongoing anniversary reissues is one such luscious EP from Llorca featuring Lady Bird. 'My Precious Thing' comes with three subtly different versions here: first come the funky as hell bass riffs of the extended version, which when paired with the soul vocals are as good as house gets. The Rollercone dub ups the groove train vibes and a dub strips things back to those sweet beats.

Opack (reissue) (limited 12")
Cat: 267WS 76133. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Drum's Unlimited (6:19)
  2. Saulbass Theme (6:05)
  3. Nice Walk (5:06)
  4. Transcontinental (4:31)
  5. Hypernormal (5:01)
Review: If the F Communications imprint is new to you then a catch up is well overdue. The Parisian label - which went on something of a hiatus in 2008 - is among the longest standing Gallic 'intelligent dance' labels, pushing out work from some of the country's most esteemed dignitaries (Lauren Garnier, Saint Etienne) during its lifetime.

Now approaching the 20th anniversary mark, it's only right that a few reissues should be coming our way, and Opack is as fitting as they are likely to get. Five tracks that span a huge spectrum of electronic beats, from the jazz drum 'n' bass opener 'Drum's Unlimited', to the electronic soul of 'Transcontinental' and the warm, deep house of 'Nice Walk'. More than enough evidence that dance labels don't have to be homogenous to be considered consistent.

FCom 25 EP (remastered)
Cat: 267WS 7013312. Rel: 27 Jul 20
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Spanish Harlem (6:44)
  2. Mellotron (7:34)
  3. Illogique (7:22)
  4. Slow (6:47)
Review: As part of Laurent Garnier's 25th anniversary celebrations for his legendary F-Communications, they are reissuing some much celebrated classics from the label's back catalogue. These tracks by French duo The Youngsters were originally released on a series of EPs back in 2001. While they may not have released anything new in the last 12 years, the selections on 'FCom 25 EP' (remastered) have certainly stood the test of time. From the infectious tribal funk of "Spanish Harlem" which sounds like something Derrick May would have caned back in the day, to the moody dancefloor drama of "Mellotron" and the knackered house of "Slow" - they all prove that Gilles Escoffier and Olivier Mateu's legacy still lives on.
