Review: The Simonsound are in fact Matt Ford (aka hip-hop producer DJ Format) and Simon James, and on Reverse Engineering they've united to go on a Moog-fuelled odyssey into a funky and kitsch world of their own. Having initially drummed up interest by releasing two 7" singles featuring covers of Kraftwerk's "Tour De France" and The Jimmy Castor Bunch's B-boy classic "It's Just Begun," they've turned the project into a full blown album and it's a huge amount of fun from start to finish. Both of the initial singles appear on the album - "Tour De Mars" (as they've retitled it) kicking things off in style. As with almost all of the material here, funky live drums underpin extensive use of vintage synths, making it a pleasing cross between the earnest output of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and the slightly more tongue-in-cheek 90's covers project, The Moog Cookbook.

Review: Terrel Wallace, AKA First Word Records regular Tall Black Guy, seemingly has a thing for journeys. His first album was called 8 Miles To Moneart, and this follow-up is loosely based around the idea of a musical train ride. Let's Take A Trip is certainly an enjoyable excursion, chock full of dreamy hip-hop instrumentals, head-nodding workouts, hazy grooves, dreamy neo-soul jams, jazzy interludes, and snappy rap cuts. Highlights whizz by like landscapes seen from a train window, and include the glimpse-and-you'll-miss-it shuffle of '80s Babies hook-up "Don't Box Me In", the sumptuous hip-hop soul of Moonchild collaboration "I Will Never Know", and the dreamily soulful closer, "Peace & Love".

Review: When this album was initially released way back in 2008, it was Kaidi Tatham's first under his given name (previously, he'd released solo records as Afronaught and appeared on all manner of collaborative releases). Since then, he has of course gone on to greater critical and commercial success, but as this timely reissue proves, "In Search of Home" still hits home hard. Like much of his work, it deftly showcases his Herbie Hancock-like jazz and jazz-funk keyboard skills within tracks that variously join the dots between broken beat, hip-hop, deep house, Latin fusion and sumptuous slow jams. Colourful, rich, jazzy and impeccably performed throughout, the album remains one of the high points of Tatham's career and is well worth adding to your collection.

Review: The word 'legend' gets banded about rather a lot, but it is certainly applicable to West London scene stalwart Kaidi Tatham. Further confirmation of this elevated status can be found throughout "It's A World Before You", a staggeringly good album that marks the musician-producer's first solo set for some seven years. While rooted in the kind of warm, rich and life-affirming jazz-funk-fuelled broken beat workouts with which Tatham is most readily associated (and they're naturally superb), there's plenty of killer diversions dotted throughout. These include a couple of spacey, soul-flecked ambient rubs, a sublime collaboration with hip-hop/modern soul fusionists Children of Zeus, and a fine head-nodding hip-hop jam featuring rapper Uhmeer. In a word: essential.

Review: First Word Records was born in 2003 as a collaboration between scratch DJ Andy H and promoter Aly Gillani. Frustrated by the lack of an outlet for the music that they and their friends were producing, the duo decided that the gap needed filling - resulting in "Two Syllables". A genre defying introduction to the world of First Word Records, the album was originally released in April 2004 following the single "Come The Revolution/Feel The Music" featuring First Word affiliate (and former Leeds resident) Tommy Evans and a then unknown singer called Corinne Bailey Rae.
