  2. Sensational (3:35)
  3. Good Time Girl (feat King Merc) (4:18)
  4. Family Tree (4:00)
  5. Rewards (4:57)
Review: Kylie Auldist is a heavyweight Aussie soul singer whose powerful lungs have graced many a hit over the years. Now, with the help of Lance Ferguson and Graeme Pogson, she's recorded a solo album, Family Tree, and this here EP features a selection of tracks from it. Gone is the raw funk vibes of old with Auldist opting for a bright and synthetic mid-'80s pop-soul sound instead. It largely works too with the Donna Allen-esque "Sensational", the chrome and carpet grooves of "Family Tree" and the late-'70s US funk style of "Rewards" as standouts.

Review: While writing this album, Dan Berkson was based in London, and the city's vibrant jazz and broken beat scene was been a clear influenced on the music he made in that time. Dialogues is an accomplished artistic statement filled with virtuosos musicianship, vibrant drums and jazz chords that brim with life. The grooves are all rooted in jazz with elements of the rootsy blues and ragtime of his youth, cool 60s modernism and 70s funk fusions. Magical and mystifying in equal measure, this an immediately timeless record from a contemporary great.

Review: To Love Somebody is a great album from the rich cannon of reggae. It's the work of Bunny Scott and brings plenty of soul to Caribbean rhythms, and this is a first ever official reissue. Originally recorded in 1975 and produced by, who else, the great Lee 'Scratch' Perry, it rides through plenty of lovestruck laments, more upbeat and rump wiggling gems like 'I Am I Said' and slower, more heartfelt and tender tracks like 'Let Love Touch Us No.' Versatile and vital throughout, this is a richly rewarding reggae record from one of the greats.

Classics/Ska
  1. Kinky Fly (2:40)
  2. Sweet Loving Love (2:56)
Review: This is a crucial 45 from Freestyle Records which separates out two tracks from their recent Bunny Scott reissue project. It is a brilliant showcase of Scott's early-Black Ark debut LP with Blaxploitation-influenced funk track 'Kinky Fly' kicking off. It has backing band members from The Chi-Lites' on board as well as a nice horn section and Chinna Smith's wah-wah guitar. The whole thing is overdubbed with synths to add to the mood. 'Sweet Loving Love' is more upbeat, with sunny towlines and rolling rhythms.

  19. Daytoner - "I Get By"
Review: We can think of few finer stocking fillers for funk aficonados than this fifth Funk & Soul Club compilation from actor/comedian-turned-radio host Craig Charles. As with previous volumes, the Red Dwarf star and BB 6 Music host has included a mixture of original funk era cuts and recent revivalist gems. In the latter category you'll find a stellar instrumental cover of Rick James' "Super Freak" by The Traffic, the dancefloor-burning sound of Nicole Willis and the UMO Orchestra and the brilliant boogie revivalism of Australian singer Kylie Audist. In terms of deeper older selections, look no further than the 1973 jazz-funk re-make of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" by Brian Auger's Oblivion Express and the Afro-funk explosion that is "Nawa" by Ginger Baker & His African Messengers.

Review: Having re-invented himself as the UK's favourite funk and soul selector via shows on BBC 6 Music, comedy actor-turned-Corrie cab driver Craig Charles brings his wildly successful Funk & Soul Club brand to CD for the first time. Pitched at newcomers rather than confirmed diggers, it features a mix of well known nu-funk floor fillers (The Apples' version of RATM's "Killing In The Name", Nostalgia 77's ubiquitous White Stripes cover), lesser-known cuts from modern soul 'names' (Speedometer, The Haggis Horns, The Bamboos), older gems (Al Wilson, Incredible Bongo Band), a dash of reggae and a few curveballs (Treva Whateva's long-forgotten banger "Singalong"). Good times guaranteed.

Review: Reissued on 12" wax after its long germination as a mega-rare promo white label, Rick Clarke's very first and massively sought-after single 'Potion', from 1981, gets light shed on it once more. Revered by boogie collectors in particular, this one is best known for its instrumental, which appears in all its glitzy glory on the B side. On the song, as you'll recall, Clarke urges us to "get, get down" and drink from his disco elixir; we gladly oblige.

Review: New Zealand-born Lance Ferguson has been the beating heart of Melbourne's modern funk and soul scene for the best part of two decades. It's this that allowed him to gather many of the city's best musicians together to record "Rare Groove Spectrum", an album of fresh covers of rare and classic funk, soul and Latin jams. There are some killer versions to be found amongst the 11 tracks on offer. We're particularly enjoying the collective's riotous instrumental revision of Pleasure classic "Joyous", the strutting deep funk heaviness of "Egg Roll" (a similarly restless cover of a mysterious but much-played cut that should be familiar to dusty-fingered diggers and knowledgeable dancers) and the sumptuous summer breeze that is the combo's meandering take on Earth, Wind and Fire staple "Brazilian Rhyme". It is, though, all superb.

The pieces are technically covers; the A, of Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Brazilian Rhyme', and the B of 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' by James Mason. This Japanese 7" edition contains no end of wally funk, baggy brass trills and bossa nova clave, musically emanating straight from the heart of Melbourne, Australia.

It's this that allowed him to gather many of the city's best musicians together to record "Rare Groove Spectrum", an album of fresh covers of rare and classic funk, soul and Latin jams. This sampler seven-inch contains two killer covers. On the A you'll find Ferguson and company charging through the deep funk brilliance of "Egg Roll", an instrumental track that first rose to prominence when Keb Darge reissued an un-credited test pressing of mysterious origin. Over on the flip, Ferguson's charges deliver a heady, exotic and intoxicating interpretation of "The Dump" by Soul Vibrations.

Review: Aussie funkateer Lance Ferguson - the man behind a multitude of killer bands and solo projects - impressed with 2019 album Rare Groove Spectrum, an all-live set of "DJ friendly re-imaginings" (that's instrumental covers to you and me). This sequel follows a similar blueprint, with Ferguson and his assembled musical comrades delivering fiery, ear-catching and floor friendly interpretations of everything from the Sunburst Band's 2004 jazz-funk club classic 'Far Beyond' and Marcos Valle's Brazilian disco gem 'Estrelar', to Kool & The Gang's luscious 'Summer Madness' (here presented with some superb synth solos) and Carly Simon's reggae-infused Balearic disco anthem 'Why'. Now Lance Ferguson follows it up with a tidy 7" that features his take on 'Mango Meat' as well as his unique Latin soul cover of Gladys Knight's classic 'Got Myself a Good Man.' It's a bustling jazz-funk gem with glorious flutes bursting out of the mix and rollin drum rhythms. 'Mango meat' goes a litter deeper with its more rolling drum work and psyched-out guitars and big horns.

Chugging, slick and wacky, McKenzie's vocals glisten and flit over a raw electro beat, heralding offbeat and Texan funk guitar, electrics and basses alike. Review: Melbourne musician Lance Ferguson is one hell of a talent, seemingly able to turn his hand to almost any style with predictably impressive results. Although best known for his role in funk combos the Bamboos and Cookin' on 3 Burners, he's also delivered loose and languid broken beat as Lanu and jazz with Menagerie, an expansive outfit that first appeared on Tru Thoughts in 2012. Here he reconvenes the musical ensemble for a sophomore set heavily influenced by the "post-Coltrane" modal sounds of legendary labels Strata East, Tribe and Black Jazz. As you'd expect, the whole thing is impeccably played and produced, with occasional forays into jazz-funk and soul-jazz territory amongst the more traditional-sounding contemporary jazz compositions on show elsewhere on the album.

This record features a number of high profile guests and is said to have been inspired by the classics sounds of John Coltrane as well as the expansive new jazz era ushered in by the likes of Kamasi Washington, Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia. It sure is an expressive record with leanings towards spiritual sounds and hypnotic leads. Uplifting harmonies and dramatic drums all make it a thrilling ride, once again from this fine Melbourne crew.

It came on Freestyle Records and now makes it to wax, with all of his classic collaborations incuded as well as his most notable hit, 'There's Nothing Like This,' as well as 'It's So,' the big, floor facing cut that always amps up any club with its bristling drum work taking cues from the sounds Omar heard at The Notting Hill Carnival. There are plenty of lesser known gems form the evergreen star, too, plus exclusive and previously unheard tracks 'Pass It On' ft Terri Walker and 'Long Time Coming.'

Review: One of the UK's most distinctive, consistent and authentic male soul voices returns with his eighth album in 27 years... And it's a serious piece of work. Rich in range, warmth, creativity and a keen eye on the dancefloor, everything about him feels refreshed and energised. Highlights include the Dilla-meets-Iz & Diz style "This Way That Way", the glistening Balearic charm of "Feeds My Mind", the syrupy organs and harmonies on "Insatiable". Winding down with the almost filmic narrative "Grey Clouds", it's one of those records that will have you leaping up, flipping to side A and starting all over again. Feel the love.

This cheeky 7" is a reissue of the title track from his album The Man and a fine example of his perfectly soulful vocals and mellifluous melodies over nice broken beat and nu jazz sounds. It represents some of his best work and this contemporary take uses the final few bars of the original track as its starting point in a "part 2" style.

Review: Few have done more to popularize British jazz than Courtney Pine. Since bursting onto the scene 30 years ago, he's delivered a swathe of fine albums, many of which have crossed over into the mainstream. His latest full-length excursion, Black Notes From The Deep, has the potential to be big, too. As well as including a range of traditionalist jazz compositions - most of which are laidback and put Pine's mazy sax solos front and centre - the album boasts fusion tracks inspired by hip-hop and broken beat. Old friend and long-serving British soul man Omar makes a number of guest appearances, with the snappy, beautiful and breakbeat-driven cover of Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly" standing out.

Their current vocalist is none other than the legendary Martha High, a long time vocalist with James Brown until 1995 when she left to tour globally with James's sax player Maceo Parker. Does it hit all the right spots? Does it tick all the boxes? Hell yeah! Martha is firing on all four cylinders, ably assisted by UK soul man Myles Sanko whilst a killer guitar licked, punchy brass groove carries things on at a furious pace. "Dragging Me Down" on the flip sports a crystal clear performance from Martha as the band cook the bubbling organ tempo on gas mark 10; oven gloves at the ready people.

Review: Speedometer are an outfit with more than 20 years behind them, and they grew from a four-piece soul and funk covers crew in the South East of the UK to a serious creative entity with a towering discography. Most of their music comes out on Freestyle these days, and so the label have done the right thing and tracked back to reissue their early deep funk masterpiece, This Is Speedometer. It's got all the raw, in-the-room spirit you'd expect of a band cutting their teeth, which makes the music all the more exciting. From vocal jams like 'Wait Up' to the springy breaks-in-waiting of 'Mullet', this is pure heat from a seriously talented crew who play it like they mean it. They may be a little slicker these days, but there's so much to enjoy about these nothing-to-lose sessions from Speedometer.

Review: Short-lived all-female group Spoilsports were active from 1980 and operated in a world where jazz-rock, modern soul and post-punk all cross-pollinated with each other. One of their only early DIY releases now gets reissued by Freestyle Records and finds the members - who were all active in London's feminist and improvised music scenes - lay down a couple of political yet playful numbers. With Carole Nelson on keys, Angele Veltmeijer on saxophone, Sheelagh Way on drums, Lesley Shone on bass, Isabel on congas and Laka Koq providing vocals Spoilsports cooked up a real storm here.

Review: The first in a new reissue directive from the label, Freestyle reissue this rare UK boogie 12" originally released back in 1983 by Take Three. The brainchild of writer/producer trio S.H.E. (Steve Sinclair, Peter Hinds & Kevin Ellis) and fronted by former South London lovers rock vocal harmony group Alpha - sisters Jackie & Jean Heron with Marlene Richardson. "Tonight's The Night" was originally pressed up on their own label Fast Forward and would be the first commercial release of their creative partnership, spawning multiple projects within the UK soul, funk and dance music scenes.
