Don't Stop Get It
Don't Stop Get It (limited 7")
Cat: FF45 022. Rel: 06 Jul 23

Hip Hop/R&B
Don't Stop Get It (3:21)
Funky Atmosphere (4:14)
Review: Norfolk breaks master Chrome has been at it since the 80s, but this is a marker of authenticity that almost goes without saying, not least since his latest 7" 'Don't Stop Get It' needs rather little context to back it up. When your A-side is this bouncy, punchy and deft, most cut-up heads will deem it an insta-cop. That being said, while these sample-heavy originals prioritize maximum bass and treble at all turns, they also flaunt a taste for the weird; the B's 'Funky Atmosphere' is funky indeed, coming thick and fast with its cuckoo-clock-like samples and strange plinky-plonky stutters.

Life's A Bitch (3:45)
(It Ain't) All Good (4:03)
Review: Cornish funkateer Daytoner rarely fails to deliver the goods, with his semi-regular seven-inch missives being amongst his most potent releases. He's at it again here, delierving two confirmed party-starting workouts that combine live funk and soul style instrumentation topped off with classic hip-hop acapellas. He begins with 'Life's a Bitch', where fast crew rap flows lifted from a much-loved hip-hop cut ride undulating bass guitar, laidback funk breaks and glistening guitars. He flips the script a little on flipside '(It Ain't) No Good', delivering hip-hop tempo beats, deep bass, luscious electric piano motifs and smart use of one of the most celebrated R&B vocals of the 1990s.

Apache Street (3:24)
Michael's Incredible Twin (3:42)
Review: Secord time around for "wild west" funakteer Daytoner's "Apache Street" seven-inch, which has been in high demand since it first hit record stores in 2018. As the title suggests, both cut-and-paste workouts borrow heavily from the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache", one of the foundation stones of hip-hop culture. The title track is a fine example of a mash-up that works, with Daytoner layering the horn stabs and vocals from Lou Rawls' "Dead End Street" over the famous "Apache" break. That break is prominent on side B, this time underpinning cheery horns, pianos, bass and guitars from the Skatalites' Ska classic "Beardman Ska". It's a simple idea expertly executed.

Feel Like Jumping

Classics/Ska
Feel Like Jumping (4:12)
Perfidious (3:43)
Review: A decade has passed since Daytoner released his first record. Since then, the Cornwall-based party-starter has delivered countless heavyweight slabs of sample-laden funk breaks and hip-hop-fired mash-ups. For his latest trick, he's decided to tool-up Marcia Griffiths' rocksteady classic "Feel Like Jumping". His revision is very much a "light touch" affair, despite the presence of some punchy new hip-hop drums and a sprinkling of spoken word samples. Flipside "Perfidious" is another loved-up, hip-hop ready reggae revision. It, too, hits the spot, suggesting that both cuts will go down a storm on a variety of party-hearty dancefloors.

93' Til Infinity (remixes)

Hip Hop/R&B
93' Till Infinity (DJ ADS remix) (3:46)
Hate It Or Love It (DJ ADS remix) (2:50)
Review: DJ ADs joins the FF45 roster with two banging remixes of Souls of Mischief & 50 Cent classics respectively. On the A, we hear a version of the former's ''93 Till Infinity', except for a deeper, fuller boom-bap instrumental that revels in its central bass riff and electric-piano staccatos. 50 Cent's remix is the highlight of the B-side, with 'Hate It Or Love It' lent a victorious, brass-laden memory-lane-trippin' beat, more than fit for a king, "rap's MVP".

Marrrtin's Scenario (4:05)
Enta Humpty (3:21)
Review: French beatmaker DJ Marrrtin has his fingers in a lot of pies, from running Stereophonk to working in groups like Funky Bijou. Now he's up on Friday's Funky 45 with a hip-hop rooted re-flip to get party people the world over rocking out. 'Marrrtin's Scenario' does a damn fine job of re-positioning A Tribe Called Quest's classic 'Scenario' with some organ-soaked funk, while 'Enta Humpty' goes heavy on the boom bap breaks to provide a heads down groove that should get the breakers breaking and the freakers freaking. When you can't get enough heat for that lil box of 7"s, Friday's Funky 45 have got you covered.

Old Skool Bounce (3:39)
It Really Matters To Me (3:33)
Review: Aaron aka Double A really serves up a double a-sided banger here for the Friday's Funky 45 label. It is a block-rocking beat with plenty of old-school samples and raw funk drumming that kick off on 'Old Skool Bounce'. The vocals are visceral call-and responses with a classic lead flute sound bring the joy. On the flip, things start with a super cool and breezy beat before a big vocal erupts and the prickly funk drums and rim shots elevate the track. It's another classic vocal top line that finishes it in style.

So Sorry (3:56)
Review: With previous razor sharp re-versions and flips from the likes of Voodoocuts and DJ Pump, Friday's Funky 45 welcome in Double A to drop two monster remixes that will have the party people popping off from the first drop to the last. On the A side, The Fugees' evergreen version of 'Killing Me Softly' gets strapped to a hard-knocking beat which can't fail to get the masses moving. On the flip, 'So Sorry' is a twist-up of Outkast that delivers a crucial beat underneath 'Ms. Jackson' and gives the all-time classic a new lease of life.

One Step (4:45)
Ain't Got Time (feat The Gaff) (4:19)
Review: It's been almost 11 years since Featurecast dropped their heavyweight revision of Aretha Franklin's "One Step" on Wah Wah 45's "Dubplate" series. Here the sought-after side is finally given the reissue treatment. It remains one of their finest revisions: a loose, languid and head-nodding fusion of hip-hop beats, subtle dub skank, occasional Marvin Gaye samples and seduction sections from Aretha's sugary, string-drenched original. Over on side B you'll find another gem from Featurecast's vaults: a tidy hip-hop style revision of Marvin Gaye's "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" from 2016, which was made in collaboration with Washington D.C pal The Gaff.

Make It Marley
Review: NY duo Freqnik & Wdre lay down two serious b-boy jams drenched in references and knowing nods. Sample-nerd heaven, if you sat down to list the breaks and snippets and loops used across the two tracks you'd be there for days. "Stamp Tramp" pays homage to The Mohawks by way of rolling, wriggling breakbeats while "Make It Marley" acts as a tribute to original NYC Cutter Marley Marl himself. Intricately weaved but delivered with direct focus for the floor, these man have the perfect balance locked down.

Get On Down (3:08)
Review: Krafty Kuts join FF45's repertoire with 2 deft new tunes, both of which work their proper remixy mashup magic. On Side A, they merge Nas' 'Made You Look' together with Placebo's 'Humpty Dump' for a busy and bustling chill hip hop bit, 'Humpty Nas', all cloudy and energetic... Side B meanwhile reinterprets Kenny Dope's 'Get On Down' with original production flair.

You Got It (3:04)
Review: Martin Reeves aka Krafty Kuts was a key player in the breakbeat explosion at the turn of the millennium. Like many of his peers in the scene, he was of course also a deep digging DJ with an extensive knowledge of breaks and funk and it is that which he twisted into his own contemporary style. Now he returns to those roots somewhat for a seance time on his FF45 label with a pair of hard and hella funky hitting beats. The first is 'Street Hop which is a raw, Nas-style hip-hop joint with tough bars and beats. 'You Got It' then takes the energy levels down a touch for a deeper vibe with bars that remind more of Biggy.

C.R.E.A.M.
Wild Kick
Review: Weighty, bass-packed hip-hop editry from the form's current stylistic crown-bearers Krafty Kuts, who this time deliver yet another two curios for the heads to chew on. On this 7" comes a smoked-out, heads-down version of 'C.R.E.A.M.' by Wu-Tang, flipping the song instrumentally towards a mood of melodrama and vacillatory tension-release; the B contrasts with a soft-bellied version of Lou Reed come A Tribe Called Quest's 'Take A Walk On The Wild Side' aka. 'Can I Kick It?', with an instrumental take that'll make your ears point straight upwards.

Brujeria
Review: One of several new Krafty Kuts edits to fly through the floodgates of late, this 7" amounts to the whopping 28th edition of the esteemed Friday's Funky series. This time hearing the editors handle and reappropriate a swathe of obscure Latin music samples, of lord knows what origin, 'Colombia' amounts to a slick two-toner backed by brass riffs and samples rap interjections. B-side 'Brujeria' is of a similar quality and verve.

Love To Angie (45 edit) (4:29)
Review: Back in 2003 and after the big success of his 'Follow Me', mash up maestro Red Astaire put out 'Rollin' Stone' on G.A.M.M. It's a tune that pairs some fantastic vocals from neo-soul queen Miss Badu with a haunting piano line and guest raps from her then partner Andre 3000. Nearly two decades later it is still a cult tune that gets a proper reissue on 45. Flip it over for a special edit from Freddie Cruger of Angie Stone's 'I Wish I Didn't Miss You,' which also has never featured on 7" before. Both are crucial cuts.

Right On (Jim Sharp mix) (2:57)
Full Love (Jim Sharp mix) (4:14)
Review: Ff45 (Friday's Funky 45) welcome Canada's finest Jim Sharp back to the fore with two 7"-ready sure-shots, of the remix/reinterpretation/covers variety. On the A, we hear a flip of J-Lo's pop classic 'Get Right' but reconstructed to dazzling effect, with every part rerecorded impeccably and placed into a fresh breaks-funk context. The B, meanwhile, reinterprets the Armand Van Helden/Common hip-disco-house classic, 'Full Moon'.

Jim Sharp - "Inner City" (3:45)
Nick Bike - "Inner City" (Power mix) (4:48)
Review: Jim Sharp & Nick Bike are two of Canada's finest beat makers and here they turn their attention to the legendary Marvin Gaye. His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums. They're crisp and tight but funky, and the bendy chords and melodic motifs flesh it out. On the reverse is a Power Mix by Nick Bike that ups the weight and stomp of the drums and layers in the wordless ad libs from the original to bring the soul.

Sunny Juice (3:38)
Skeelo Wonder (3:43)
Review: Smoove is back on Friday's Funky 45 with another of his irresistible mash ups. Larger than life, hard hitting and designed for maximum impact on inebriated dance floors, the opener marries vocals from 'Juice' with 'Sunny', adds some hefty drums played by label mate Dr Rubberfunk and the results are real, if not subtle. Reverse it for a collision of Skee-lo's perma-anthem, 'I Wish' chopped up with the funky keys and soul of Stevie Wonder's classic of the same name. These are bait tunes, but we all need a bit of that from time to time.

De La Smoove: Lesson 1 (4:30)
Hall & Soul (4:24)
Review: Smoove returns to his hip-hop roots via a brilliantly simple but wonderfully crafted tribute to Del La Soul's "daisy age" era and cut-and-paste pioneers Double Dee & Steinski. 'De La Smoove' is a simple idea that has been expertly executed. Subtitled 'Lesson 1', it sees Smoove stitch together snatches of tracks sampled by De La Soul (or more specifically, Prince Paul) on the peerless Three Feet High and Rising album, throwing in all manner of well-known vocal snippets previously used by Steinski and others. He flips the script on B-side 'Hall & Soul', sneakily blending elements of De La Soul classic 'Say No Go' with one of the tracks that it sampled, blue-eyed soul favourite 'I Can't Go For That'.

Review: FF45 welcomes Smoove back for his third edits release, and this one surely won't disappoint: The Pharcyde reign over a beefed-up JB break - what's not to like? - while an instrumental and some bonus bits for DJs abound on the flip, making for a more measured listen in contrast to the more vocally immediate, on-the-beat A.

Review: FF45 continue in their mission to fuse and mash only the hottest classics together. This time they welcome two Berliners, Soul Brigada and Voodoocuts, to the fore for a hybridized chimera mixing the fabled verses of Ludacris with Aretha Franklin on the B, and an apparently completely original cut on the A (although it sounds very 'classic' - if it is sampled, then it's a rarity for sure!). Don't sleep on this 7"...

Review: Berlin-based artist Voodoocuts has been offering up seriously groovesome edits and flips for the hip-hop minded on labels like Juice On Wax and RESENSE, and now he's dropping a second round of executive party jams on Friday's Funky 45. This 7" kicks off on the A side with 'Got Jazz', which threads some sweet sitar licks and boom bap drums underneath Stetasonic's 'Talkin' All That Jazz'. On the flip we get a freshened up version of Eric B & Rakim's 'I Know You Got Soul' which should appeal to those who like their beats big and brassy, nodding to the likes of The Wiseguys and that mid-90s era of cut-ups. Got a party that needs funking up? You know where to come.
