Giant Cuts Vol 4
Cat: GC 004. Rel: 15 Dec 10

Disco/Re-Edits
Say It Baby
Catch A Dub
Don't Stop
The Word Of God
Review: Deadly Sin return with the fourth volume of Giant Cuts, laying down some granite weight tweaks of 100bpm+ disco for the warm up slots on a rather sleek clear vinyl twelve inch. "Say It Baby" drops some heavily phased Eighties post disco heat with plenty of fat Linn action and the requisite bassline hug whilst "Catch A Dub" twists down multiple neon synth oscillations around a heavy disco boogie groove. The heavy filtered disco vibes run over to the B Side with "Don't Stop" laying down several bars of undulating vocal frequencies before locking into a sludgy arpeggiated groove, whilst fans of Larry Levan's greatest work (or was it Walter Gibbons?) will be all over the mix friendly edit of Joubert Singers that ends this release.

Disco Boogie Classics Volume 3
Cat: DISC 003. Rel: 24 Jul 13

Disco/Re-Edits
Hooked On You (A Special Feeling edit)
Body 2 Body (More Lotion edit)
Leg Over (Uptown edit)
Review: The Giant Cuts label muster up Volume 3 of their Disco Boogie Classics series, which this time open with the Bootsy Collins-esque cowbell ring funk of "Hooked On You (A Special Feeling edit)". Had it been the early '70s, the string lead instrumental and guitar licked sway of "Body 2 Body (More Lotion edit)" would make the ideal soundtrack to a Blaxploitation montage, while the synthesised Caribbean funk of "Leg Over (Uptown) edit" is best served in a hot loft, with platform shoes and a whole lot of punch.

The Rhythm EP
Cat: GCP 003. Rel: 16 Oct 19

Disco/Re-Edits
The Rhythm Is There (6:18)
My Darling (Dina) (6:35)
The Rhythm Is There (Doc Jam remix) (5:56)
Tropical Space (6:10)
Review: Always adept at reading the crowd and armed with decades of experience behind the decks, well-travelled man and Discoweey label boss Hotmood makes his debut on UK-based Giant Cuts with four summery tracks on "The Rhythm EP". Combining slo-mo boogie, groove laden disco and quality house sounds, he kicks things off with the sleazy late night funk attack of "The Rhythm Is There", before going deeper on the bass-driven soul loops of "My Darling (Dina)", leading up to the thumpin' B1 cut - a remix by Doc Jam that's chock-a-block with dancefloor dynamics and closing out with a fusion of jazz-funk, disco-house and evocative tropical jazz samples on "Tropical Space". Fans of Tropical Disco, Ravanelli Disco Club and Samosa will especially love this.

Various Artists EP (Record Store Day 2014)
Cat: GCVA 001. Rel: 08 May 14

Disco/Re-Edits
Bite The Dust (LNTG rework)
Urgent (Luxxury rework)
Georgy Porgy (Ed Zone Land of Oz rework)
Across The Floor (Deadly Sins rework)
Review: Edit culture has gone to such great crate digging depths, sometimes it's nice to return to the bigger, most well-known cuts... As long as they're edited and reworked with creativity, there's still heaps of miles left in them. All of these four twists are fine examples, as we're treated to Queen, Foreigner, Toto and the BeeGees. Each one subtly tricked out, dubby and just on the right side of cosmic, it's a kindly reminder than sometimes the best edits are the ones you've known all your life. Solid, sweet and essential.

The Hangover (5:32)
Know This (7:30)
Fly Robert (7:11)
Bo Knows (5:31)
Review: Having previously established himself as fine re-editor and bootleg remixer, DJ Apt One recently donned the Michael The Lion alias for an outing on Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape. Here, he utilizes the pseudonym once more, delivering another quartet of killer re-edits for London's Giant Cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the Idjut Boys style dub disco effects and rolling grooves of opener "The Hangover" (a revision of Diana Ross's brilliant "Love Hangover"), to the chunky, disco-meets-house chug of string-laden flipside opener "Fly Robert". Elsewhere, check the sweaty, cut-up, heavily percussive hustle of "Bo Knows", and the swinging, guitar-led disco soul-goes-house pump of "Know This".
