  4. So In Love (Cassio radio remix) (5:07)
Review: Second time around for Blaze's 1993 outing under the Black Rascals alias, which famously featured Cassio Ware on vocals. "So In Love" has stood the test of time impressively, thanks in no small part to the way in which the "Shelter Mix" strikes a perfect balance between the swing of New Jersey garage, the melodiousness of early '90s deep house and the effortlessly soulfulness of Ware's vocals. The package contains two dubs: the near ambient bless of the cymbals-and-synths workout that is the "Piano Man Dub", and the fluid vibraphone style solos that stretch out across the groovy "Shelter Dub". Ware's "Radio Remix", which boasts AOR style guitar solos and a loose, hip-hop influenced beat pattern, completes a tidy package.

Review: If you dig disco but have yet to explore the bulging back catalogue of De-Lite Records stalwarts Crown Heights Affair, this double-pack could be exactly what you need. It draws together a quintet of the group's most potent and essential moments, beginning with the soaring mid-tempo brilliance of "Say A Prayer For Two". That sublime chunk of disco-funk perfection is followed by the buzzing horns, walking bass and high-register vocals of "Galaxy of Love" and the punchy disco stomp of "I'm Gonna Love You Forever", where relentless horns and spacey synth flourishes do their best to whip listeners into a frenzy. The second 12" offers another chance to own "Dreaming A Dream (Goes Dancin')" and the bouncy disco-funk epic that is "Dancin' (Disco mix)".

  1. Keep On Movin' (remix) (7:06)
  2. Keep It In The Family (remix) (6:39)
  3. Whistle Bump (7:43)
Review: Having previously dipped into the back catalogue of a host of disco, house and U.S garage acts, Groovin' Records has decided to offer up a trio of tracks from jazz-funk maestro-turned-disco don Eumir Deodato. First up is John "Jellybean" Benitez's superb 1982 remix of "Keep On Movin", a dreamy disco club-cut rich in bold slap bass, swirling chords and sweet female vocals. Benitez is also at the controls on "Keep It In The Family (Remix)', another 1982 rework of one of Deodato's most famous disco-era anthems (check the clips - you'll be singing along within seconds). To round things off, the label steps back to 1978 with the hard-to-find and in-demand 12" version of jazz-funk/disco classic "Whistlebump".

  4. Feelin Who You Are (Shelter dub)
Review: Although we've become accustomed to Groovin' digging into the crates for inspiration, few would have expected their latest release to be a reissue of one of Peven Everett's most slept-on soulful house gems. "Feelin' Who You Are" first appeared in 2008 on the flip of a double A-side single, before being given a pressing of its own with fresh reworks. This edition includes versions from both releases, beginning with the near 16-minute "Original Drum Cartell Full Length Mix" - an epic journey through musically rich, live-sounding dancefloor grooves topped up with an impeccable Peverett lead vocal. We're also treated to the warmer, tighter "Original Mix" and two Shelter mixes by Adam Rios and Timmy Regisford: a rolling, ultra-positive vocal take and a squelchy, bassline-driven dub full of intricate instrumental flourishes.

Nisyan (7")
Cat: GR 1240. Rel: 02 Nov 18
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Nisyan (4:18)
  2. La-Ya-Hob (3:28)
Review: In 1977, Libyan musician Ahmed Fakroun flew to Milan to record some new material. The results were showcased on a pair of 7" singles, the most sought-after of which is being given the reissue treatment by Italy's Groovin label. The real winner here is "Nisyan", an Arabic interpretation of blue-eyed soul that fixes a baggy, sun-kissed sensibility, ear-catching Moog solos and a killer groove. "La Ya-Hob" is, if anything, even baggier and dreamier, with Fakroun delivering touchy-feely vocals over exotic, Middle Eastern synthesizer lines and a rolling, soft touch jazz-funk groove. Both cuts are equally breezy and jaunty, lingering in the memory for hours after each rotation.

  1. Auidny (3:39)
  2. Njoo El Leyl (4:07)
Review: Earlier in the year, Italian reissue specialists offered up a tidy reissue of Ahmed Fakrun's "Nisyan", a sought-after chunk of Arabic blue-eyed soul that originally appeared as a seven-inch single in 1977. Here they offer up a new edition of its predecessor, which the Lebanese musician recording during the same recording sessions in Milan. With its flanged guitars, lolloping reggae-funk swing, spacey synths and warm bass, "Auidny" is particularly inspired, though the West Coast AOR-influenced warmth of flipside "Njoo El Leyl" is arguably equally as addictive. Both are superb, though, so it's great that Groovin' has slung them out again.

Review: Serious Philly boogie business: In 1979 the Aleem brothers teamed up with serial hit maker Leroy Burgess for this outstanding bass slapping floor burner. Listen closely and you'll hear a young Luther Vandross on backing vocals as the twins bounce off each other with their signature high ranges. Meanwhile on the B we have a previously unreleased edit from one of the most vital, direction shaping remixers of the time; John Morales. Expect nothing but 8 minutes of pure disco bliss. We're hooked on this!

  2. Free Your Mind (instrumental) (6:23)
  3. Free Your Mind (NJ mix) (9:01)
  4. Free Your Mind (bonus dub) (7:03)
Review: Fibre Foundation were hot stuff back in the mid-nineties, with DJs like Mark Farina in particular often caning "Free Your Mind" from the trio's 1995 EP. Like many tracks of that period, it's become something of hot slab of wax so Groovin has done the right thing and reissued it with four different mixes. The "UK Mix" is slick deep house with soul-fuelled chords finished off by some sweet vocal coos. If you're after something more bumpin, check the "NJ Mix" that channels Kerri Chandler, and a heavy bonus dub with more propulsive drum work.

  4. Don't Walk Out On Love (radio edit) (4:22)
Review: While the original mixes of Gallifre's Larry Heard co-produced '89 deep house groover were naturally superb, it was always the remix 12" that the majority of DJs reached for. That's because it contained a pair of brilliant Frankie Knuckles remixes in his distinctively luscious, loved-up style. As this timely reissue proves, those reworks have lost none of their allure. Knuckles' "Club Remix", which is built around warm and tactile analogue bass, rich chords and Mondee Oliver's sublime vocal, is undoubtedly the stronger of the two for club plays, though the shorter "Dream Remix", with its rush-inducing ambient sections and nods towards contemporaneous Italian deep house, is arguably even better. Simply essential.

  1. Jealousy & Lies (6:11)
  2. Jealousy & Lies (alternative dance mix) (5:28)
  3. Jealousy & Lies (instrumental) (4:43)
Review: For their latest dive into house history, Italian reissue specialists Groovin' Records have decided to take us back to London in 1988. "Jealousy & Lies" was one of the earliest solo singles by Julian Jonah, a producer who later found greater fame as part of 187 Lockdown. It remains a wonderfully evocative chunk of dreamy deep house, with Jonah's impassioned spoken word vocal riding jacking drums, a chunky bassline and synthesizer sounds reminiscent of Larry Heard's late 1980s work. There's also a more raw-sounding "Alternative Dance Mix" that throws additional drum machine percussion and some tasty piano riffs into the mix, as well as a vocal-free instrumental take that's close in sound and feel to the A-side version.

Review: Mondee Oliver's 1991 gem "Make Me Want You" has been crying out for a reissue given the multitude of inferior house releases that have been released since the beginning of the 2010's. Even more special, Oliver was a prominent jazz singer decades earlier, but began to appear on dance tunes at the dawn of the rave era. This is one of those releases, a mesmerising house voyage that has all the right ingredients in the right combination - deep, humming bass tones, a hypnotic set of keys at its core, and exactly the right vocals to take it from sensibile to edgy. There are several versions on here, including an ace acapella for the heads. RIP Mondee Oliver.

Review: Rewind to 1992: Italian DMC champ Andrea Gemolotto and Alfredo conspirator Leo Marras collide for the first of three rare and seminal deep house exercises that have matured perfectly. The Mr Fingers-at-Bora-Bora trumpet-in-space sensuality of "Lose Control", the wide warm struts of the In Dub We Trust mix, spacious dubby reflections of "Night Clerk", the measured strikes and layered humanised stutters of "Nocturne Seduction"... If you think these remastered sound blow minds today, consider how they blew heads clean off 24 years ago. Historical.

  3. It's Alright (7:33)
Review: Three words: stone, cold, classics. Taken from three of Gino's four only albums, you'll be hard pushed to find anything better on reissue this week. "Try It Out" (from his 1981 album Closer) has that fat plucked dust-biting bassline to die for and ultra-feelgood vocals. "Dancer" (from his 1979 album Outline) takes us to the races with its pacey piano pumps and relentless energy while "It's Alright" (from his 1982 album Face To Face) shows a more low-swung sultry vibe with a walking bassline that just won't quit. Do as Gino says and try them out... You won't be disappointed.

Review: Before concentrating on his solo work as St Germain, Ludovic Navarre worked extensively with Didier Delasalle, a producer best known for his releases as Shazz, under a variety of pseudonyms. One of these was Soofle, and it's Navarre and Delesalle's sole EP under that moniker - 1993's "Nouveau" - that Groovin' Records has now decided to reissue. As you'd expect, there are plenty of nods towards dreamy deep house amongst the Motor City inspired cuts on show, with opener "Thrill" - where bubbly acid lines, hazy chords and lilting melodies ride a bustling groove - and the organ-sporting "Happy Cycle" particularly impressing. Also worth a look is closing cut, "How Do You Plead", which is arguably the most deep and melodious of the lot.

Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of hard-to-find house classics, Italy's Groove Records take us back to 1996. "House Music Will Never Die" marked Glenn Underground's first collaboration with vocalist Cei-Bei (AKA Curtis Harman) and has long been considered one of the Chicagoan producer's finest releases. Wisely, Groove has decided against tinkering with a classic, instead serving up all four mixes from the original Cajual Records 12". Choose between the classic deep house soul of the GU Cei-Bei Foot Mix, the wonderfully summery, jazz guitar-laden CVO Bismark Hotel Mix, Mark Grant's brilliantly evocative, stretched-out interpretation, and a killer Afro Dub that makes great use of a heavy analogue bassline. All four versions are top notch.
