Review: Die Mariengrotte als Trinkwasseraufbereitungsanlage (translated as The Mother Mary Grotto as a Drinking Water Treatment Plant) is a second solo long-player from Lauten der Seele this year. It is the alias of a prolific German musician Christian Schoppik, who enjoyed plenty of rightful acclaim after his debut at the start of 2022. This record again mixes up sample collages, recorded instrumentals and long-evolving narratives that tightly intertwine as the music unfolds. It makes for a mystic, dreamy listen that is as soothing as it is contemplative.

Review: Music For Open Spaces is a collaborative album by two longtime great experimental electronic musicians, Marta Salogni and Tom Relleen. Inspired by the landscapes and sounds of the Scottish Highlands, where they recorded the album in a remote cottage, the fruits of their paired labour are delicate and glassy here. Dealing mainly in modular-synthetic wildernesses, this is an album that outs its love for field-recorded naturalisms as much as it does entirely generative soundscapes. As if traversing the endless halls of a crystal cave, we're duly met with the likes of 'Furthest Fires', 'Giant Desert Cats' and 'FFXX', which sound to undulate and refract in the bleeding, crystalline light-dark.

Review: Mesmerizer is the first new album from Copenhagen band Selvhenter in almost a decade. It is also a debut on the French Hands in the Dark label and is a record full of exploration. It's full of original and complex patterns of rhythm all crafted from a diverse array of percussive instruments, horns and synths. Members drummers Jaleh Negari and Anja Jacobsen, saxophonist Sonja LaBianca and trombonist Maria Berte have a unique setup which leads their music such a powerful and potent sound while also being rich in tone. Fans of jazz, avant-garde noise and post-punk are sure to love this one.

Review: Andrew Bunsell and Tom Rellen comprise Staran Wake, the rapturous electronic music project traversing icy wonderworlds and capturing convincing musical analog-ies of them. Seven years of making music together preceded this sublime opus, after which a further four years were poured into its polishing off. Sublime aweworlds like opener 'The Watcher' use uncanny sounds and samples, as if evoking the image of moving across great plains of snow on horseback. Elsewhere, minimalist composition (as on 'Moth Syndrome') and far-out concepts filtered through physical-mimicky synths ('Ocean Trapped In Jurassic Caves') make for a unique multifaceted trip across miles.

Review: Formed by two members of The Oscillation, Tom Relleen and Valentina Magaletti, Tomaga were named by mashing up Can's album title Tago Mago, which gives some idea of the freewheeling experimentation and strange allure of Futura Grotesk. Driven by Magaletti's propulsive yet inventive percussion, the duo weave a strange and enchanting web of unsettling ambience, radiophonic textures and industrial noise, creating a sound as bleak as it is beautiful. Operating far from conventional parameters of genre, Tomaga here transform adventurous abstraction and an art-based approach into something truly enticing, crafting unique atmospheres that are arresting yet refreshingly unearthly.

Review: Londoners TOMAGA compile their latest two EPs on the new Extended Play 1 & 2 double vinyl compilation on French label Hands in the Dark. All the tracks feature intuitive dialogs between Valentina Magaletti and Tom Relleen. The English bassist and electronics engineer and Italian drummer and percussionist Magaletti find plenty of intriguing common ground that leads to dark and subtle jazz sounds with minimal nuances and lush textures. After Tom's sad and sudden passing in 2020 this is great reminder of their skills.
