Le Sacre De La Lumiere (5:23)

Review: The latest release on ever-crucial French jazz outpost Heavenly Sweetness welcomes the work of Bardainne Jaumet, a collaboration between accomplished French saxophonist Laurent Bardainne and Versatile regular Etienne Jaumet for four musically rich excursions into cosmic disco, Library music and the golden age of European synthesiser exploration. This is perhaps not what you might expect from the pairing of these two artists, or indeed the label, but the sheer compositional power and production of these two is simply undeniable. Grandiose statement pieces from two incredibly talented minds meeting on the same astral plane with a well-appointed studio as a vessel.

Porsche 944 (The Drop Vibes remix) (3:21)
Review: "The dampness of the rainforest, the hostility of the mangrove ultimately did not suit him. So he left his natural environment for the tranquillity of a freshwater body". So goes the (translated) back story of this new EP from Laurent Bardainne. The 'he' in question is a Tiger who ventured across Europe, Asia and America and apparently picked up various musical styles along the way. Whatever you make of that, the tracks here are gold: "Marvin" is smooth jazz fusion with percolating drums, "Porsche 944" has a joyous lead sax and more crisp boom bap drums, while "Aout" is a soaring bit of heartfelt soul Daptone might put out. The Drop Vibes rework of "Porsche 944" features a vocal roller and closes things in fine fashion.

Review: Laurent Bardainne and Tigre d'Eau Douce's third album, EDEN BEACH CLUB, transports listeners to a sun-drenched paradise and was conceived as an imaginary soundtrack to a day by the sea. Following the triumph of Bardainne's Hymne au soleil album, they set their sights higher and here have crafted a sonic oasis that defies boundaries. Returning to their winning formula, the album seamlessly blends groove, soul, jazz, and electronic elements as each track invites you to lose yourself in a breezy and beachy dance as you celebrate an eternal sunset tinged with electric energy. The album is brimming with sophisticated and laid back melodies and gently persuasive grooves.

Review: Paris' Heavenly Sweetness label is rightly proud of this 30th volume in the Ethiopiques series. It's a cross-generational collaboration between legendary Ethiopian singer and keyboardist Girma Beyene - best known for his jazz work in the late 1960s - and contemporary Parisian band Akala Wube. Given that the latter is dedicated to creating music inspired by Ethiopian music of the '60s and '70s, it's little surprise to find that Mistakes On Purpose is a hugely enjoyable and authentic-sounding set (think funk, soul and jazz with an East African twist). To add an extra level of authenticity, Ethiopiques founder and East African music specialist Francis Falceto acted as producer.

Review: Heavenly Sweetness present this limited 7" from French producer Blundetto featuring two tracks lifted from the Bad Bad versions full length long player. Hindi Zahra guests vocals on the updated version of "Voices" with a new version by General Elektrik replacing the previous reggaefied tip with more of a more blues tinged soul centric stumble. The flipside has a Roti Remix of "Sunset Stroll" supplying a lo fi bass rumbling skanker!

Review: Influential Guadeloupean musician Erick Cosaque released his seminal Cosaque 1978 in, funnily enough, 1977. Now, Heavenly Sweetness reissue this sun soaked classic from the man who was one of the most notable interpreters of Caribbean island culture. He became one of the main exponents of the local Gwo-ka tradition as exemplified by this album. The eight tracks are highly rhythmic affairs with expressive vocal work jostling next to majestic lead horns and a general sense of energy that conveys the hustle and bustle of a busy weekend market day.

Review: French label Heavenly Sweetness France delivers a compelling fusion of jazz, funk, and electronic sounds on this new collection, Victoire De La Musique, from French jazz-funk heroes Cotonete. Across the album, the outfit showcases their virtuosity and creativity, blending intricate melodies with infectious rhythms and plenty of rousing horns, cosmic synths and nods to 70s fusion sounds. The compositions are dynamic and engaging, drawing listeners into a world of musical exploration where, soul, innovation and a certain musical playfulness all freely coexist. Victoire De La Musique is well worthy of a top spot in the contemporary jazz-funk landscape.

Review: Under the Guts guise, instrumental hip-hop beat-maker turned tropical soul enthusiast Fabrice Franck Henri has become one of Heavenly Sweetness' most reliable artists. "Philantropiques" is Henri's first album for three years and could well be his most expansive and adventurous to date. The set's 14 tracks are as colourful and musically rich as you'd expect, with the storied producer and a range of vocal collaborators conjuring up tracks that draw influence from a myriad of Central American, Caribbean, South American and African styles. The results are uniformly excellent, with highlights including the tropical shuffle of "Mucagiami (feat Vum Vum)", the sun-kissed French Caribbean funk of "Daddy Sweet (feat Pat Kalla)", the Afro-Tropical rush of "Kenk Corner" and the synth-powered brilliance of "Shake It & Rise Up".

This new collection of such tunes is another testament to that with a heavily international and world bent. Oodles of Latin, hip hop and Afro vibes pervade the tunes by Guts aka Fabrice Franck Henri alongside a whole host of collaborators. He's a super prolific talent who has put out some ten albums in just over a decade and Estrellas is one of his best. It comes on six sides of delicious wax and takes you on a trip to sunny climates from Cuba to Brazil.

Review: Released in 1974, during Strata East's golden era, Florida free drummer John formed his first pop-up troupe to record this one-off document. At points overwhelmingly funky (the seashore laps and waves of the sun-kissed "Ode To An Untitled Lady"), at others frenetic, chaotic and challenging (the time signature switches and spiralling horns on "Ra"), at others softly cinematic and dreamy (the abstract floatation sermon of the title track) Earth Blossom creates and exists in its own cosmos. As such, it is timeless and will remain contemporary sounding for many decades to come.

Review: Three cuts from Anthony Joseph's debut album Time, each repurposed and treated by some of the best in the game. Osunlade injects "Botanique" with his cosmic, soulful Yoruba signatures. Patchworks strips the Afro vibe right back on "Kezi" while Jukebox Champions flip "Hustle To Live" with deep dreamy chords and buried blasts of trumpets and big synth washes. Each one of them add weight and clarity to Joseph's exciting narrative. Long may the story continue...

Review: Fans of Anthony Joseph rejoice! This Neckbone 7" heralds the news Heavenly Sweetness are planning a fifth album from the Trinidadian jazz funker!! Excitingly the title cut finds Joseph working with the master Syl Johnson with devastating results! The steel drum heavy pulse is the back bone for the lyrical poetry of Joseph, chanted in pure Caribbean style, and complemented on the chorus by Sly Johnson. A track made for the dancefloor with a big catchy bassline. On the B side, Joseph lays down the percussive free jazz blinder "Mano A Mano", executed in the purest style of the iconic Last Poets!!

Review: Anthony Joseph's roots run deep in the Caribbean, and the Trinidad native's singular spoken word style is full of colour and energy, just like the islands he hails from. All the music on Caribbean Roots is essentially a form of funked-out free jazz, but the vocals on the likes of "The Kora" are as powerful and evocative as the music itself. But the madness doesn't end there by any stretch of the imagination - the Miles Davis like speed of "Drum Song" is like a call to the Gods, "Slinger" is a fast-paced afrofunk shuffle, and others like "Our History" offer a more soulful edge to this wonderfully contained pandemonium. Fantastic music.

Review: 'Spirit Lash' is the first 12" of the Spasm band and its leader/poet Anthony Joseph. A cult figure of the spoken word scene in the UK, Anthony has just released this month an acclaimed poetic novel 'The African Origins Of UFOs'. His music is a deep afro-Caribbean funky trance track, influenced by the rhythms of his native land Trinidad and the deep spirited jazz of the 70s. You will hear echoes of dub poets, Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Fela, Sun Ra and Cosmic Visions, but the Spasm Band has definitely a sound of its own.

The title of it pays homage to a small coastal suburb in Accra the capital of Ghana where he grew up. The record is an ode to its nature and was recorded back in November 2020. It is a dramatic album steep in history and traditional sounds as well as looking forward and taking Afro-jazz in bold new directions. It is a hugely expansive and dramatic listen with shuffling funk grooves, more spacious and spiritual cuts and sun kissed rhythms perfect for those warmer days.

This belated second set is a deliciously vibrant and internationally minded affair, with the 13 tracks variously touching on Afro-cuban grooves, jazz-funk, zouk, calypso, tango, samba and hard-to-pigeonhole musical fusions. A range of guest vocalists swing by to lend a hand, while Rapsail's brilliant drum work - which encompasses all manner of different percussion instruments - providing the glue that holds everything together. Review: Continuing his search for a contemporary spiritual jazz equally influenced by the 70's classics of the genre and by the 21st century nu-jazz club scene, Heavenly Sweetness has produced the music of this new French-US band. Brainchild of Stéphane Ronget, trumpet player/singer/composer who contributed to the success of MJA (Metropolitan Jazz Affair), this new 12 offers three different moods. 'One Leg Dancer' is an uptempo hard boppish tune with vocals and a solid samba/jazz groove laid down by drummer extraordinaire John Betsch. 'Spiritual' is a splendid moody cover of a rarely covered John Coltrane classic with nice Rhodes playing by Benjamin Dévignes (Patchwork/MJA keyboardist). 'Almost' is a downtempo funky ballad highlighting the bass sounds of nyuyorican bassist Peter Giron. This is the 'First Step' of this new band which has many other grooves in store to be released on 2007 on Heavenly Sweetness!

Review: Since emerging on Blue Note almost 10 years ago Sly Johnson's one-man-band loopery, fiery soul and hip-hop sentimentality has gone from strength to strength. Sitting somewhere between Amp Fiddler, D'Angelo and Jamie Lidell, Mic Buddah is a late night trip around the finest soul moments of the last 40 years. "Nasty Girl" smacks of "Controversy"-era Prince, "Wet" is a smouldering, groaning slice of timeless R&B, "Good Morning" is a beautiful gospel construction laded with deep tenor loops while "Womenarium" fuses a Wonder-style jazziness with modern hip-hop. These highlights are just to start with... This is a hugely accomplished album.

Johnson's voice is as powerful as ever on the lead original version of "Evrbdd" which has a real Cody ChesnuTT circa The Headphone Masterpiece vibe to it. Augmenting Johnson's original are four remixes with French beatmaker and new Future Classic signing 123Mrk opting for piano blessed underwater soul, Canadian artist Shash'U laying down some uptempo brushed funk. Mysterious Parisian producer TAGi fairly dominates proceedings though with two diverse remixes.

Review: It was France's l'Arome Productions that had first reissued this spectacular selection of Ethiopian soul and funk back in 2009 but, since then, this particular compilation has turned into something of a cult-classic within the digging world, and it has been repressed by Heavenly Sweetness on three different occasions. None of this is in the least bit surprising given just how special the sounds on here truly are, and if you're a fan of Mulatu then this will hit the spot big time! Moreover, tunes by the likes of Samuel Belay, Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared on Mississippi's reissue schedule - and Girma Beyene go much further than the usual dosage of far-out funk, leading us to a tense, dimly lit scenario that is both hypnotic and totally different from anything else. Highly recommended, a timeless slice of history.

Review: A decade of free-spirited jazz, soul, funk and all things in between, Parisian selectors Heavenly Sweetness bring together some of their favourite friends and most talented individuals for an all-out fusion session. Highlights include Anne Wirz's octave bending dulcets on "Mother Of The Future", the roaming trumpet and loose shuffle of Florian Pellissier Quintet's "Valse Pour Helene", Jacaranda Muse's barbed lament "September Sun" and the schoolyard sing-along hip-hop "Want It Back" from the hot-to-trot Guts. Here's to another 10 years...

Review: Following the success of the first volume which sold out in 2017, Heavenly Sweetness decided with Francis Falceto to give a follow up - in the form of this box set of Ethiopian singles. It's a tribute of sorts to the music producer Ali Tango, who produced most of these EPs across 6 X 7". Falceto plunged into his impressive collection of records and there are great names of the golden age of Ethiopian music such as Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete, Ali Mohamed Birra, alongside less known artists to be rediscovered such as Muluquen Melesse, Alayew Mesfin and Seyoum Gebreyes. Including original artwork and labels, plus a poster and six stickers of all the covers. Limited edition, 2000 copies.

Review: The fact that Ethiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits has been reissued on numerous occasions over the last two decades is testament to the enduring quality of this most obscure of compilations. It first appeared on Amha Eshete's Amha Records label way back in 1972, and was the imprint's tenth and final album. An all-star affair featuring many of Eshete's most trusted musicians and producers, its ten tracks gleefully join the dots between dusty rhythm and blues, jazz, funk, soul, Brazilian rhythms and African grooves. It's genuinely "all killer" and "no filler", which may go some way to explain Heavenly Sweetness's decision to put it out again.

Review: Anne Wirz shows her composition skills with a splendid harp/voice duo in company of harpist Isabelle Olivier. Modern spiritual folk jazz with echoes of Africa, China and Dorothy Ashby. Four Tet gives the song a dancefloor leftfield electronic jazz treatment with a heavy beat on his remix part 1.His remix part 2 is in a free jazz electronica mode reminiscent of his work with Steve Reid.
