DJ Sotofett & Gilb'R - "97" (outro) (1:55)
Review: Serial collaborator DJ Sotofett pops up on Honest Jon's with a typically excellent doublepack built around a quartet of studio hook-ups. Aside from Versatile boss Gilb'r (here lending a helping hand on some African-influenced ambient house), most of the collaborators are new additions to the eccentric Norwegian's out-there audio universe. The two tracks with Phillip Lauer and JKS - an intergalactic ambient affair and a chunk of early Fila Brazillia style deep house - are particularly potent, while there's something deliciously warm and evocative about the Norwegian's explorations with Finn Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Best of all, though, are the two tracks with African vocalists Karlolin Tampere and Maimouna Haugen; "Nondo Riddimix", which boasts deliciously dense drums and sparse, exotic melodies, is arguably the highlight.

Kime Ne (Ricardo Villalobos version 1) (16:34)
Kime Ne (Ricardo Villalobos version 2) (16:04)
Review: Using the Turkish psychedelic project Insanlar as a jump off point, Honest Jon's have enlisted Ricardo Villalobos to turn out one of his grandiose remix projects that gels so naturally with more exotic sound sources. The original of "Kime Ne" is already an enchanting, Moog-infused groover rich with traditional vocals, and then Mr Villalobos locks the ingredients in for a typically cosmic ride into stripped and hypnotic house territory, letting the lutes intertwine with dusty reams of percussion using that alchemists touch that could only come the man himself. The remix spreads itself over two sides of wax, leaving one side of the double pack free for a fetching etching as well.

Review: The spread of Caribbean musical culture in the UK owes much to Lord Kitchener, an internationally celebrated Calypso artist who traveled to Britain in 1948 on the Empire Windrush and made the country his home (in fact, he performed the specially written "London Is The Place For Me" for Pathe News after disembarking at Tilbury Dock). This fine collection from Honest Jon's focuses on the music he made during his time in Britain between 1948 and '62 (he then returned to Trinidad where he lived out the rest of his life), offering up a swathe of distinctive, much-loved calypso cuts that provided a much-needed musical lifeline for Caribbean people in the UK during the first decades of the post-war period.

Review: London Is The Place For Me 8 invites jazz fans on a vibrant journey through the sounds of 1950s London, where calypso rhythms meet the bustling streets of the city. Released as part of the ongoing compilation series, the album showcases the rich cultural tapestry of post-war Britain through the music of Lord Kitchener, a Trinidadian calypso legend famed for the song that gives the compilation its title. His infectious melodies and witty lyrics paint vivid pictures of immigrant life, celebrating resilience and the pursuit of joy amid adversity. With its irresistible grooves and historical significance, this new double gatefold record via Honest Jons is a testament to the enduring legacy of Caribbean music in the UK.

Review: Based in New York City and famed for his sonic experimentalism, Madteo is back with another alluring three tracker on Honest Jon's. The music is all about rugged machine funk, busted loops and lo-fi house grooves that recall the greats like Moodymann. 'Str8 Crooked' is the most loose and clattering of the lot with its knackered bassline stay down low. The amusingly titled 'Build Back Better Sweatshops' is scuffed up deep house a la STL and 'Episcopi Vagantes' is an epic 16 minute tune with spinning hi hats, wonky synthesis and plenty of cavernous soundscapes to explore at 5am on a darkened dance floor.

Undeadman (Mordant Music remix)
Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.

Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.

If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

Review: This much loved and on-going series always comes through and the seventh volume in the London Is The Place For Me collection does so once more. It delves into the eclectic soundscape of 1950s and 1960s London, spotlighting the cultural fusion of Caribbean music within the city's bustling streets. Curated with meticulous attention, the album presents a mosaic of genres, from calypso and mento to jazz and ska, reflecting the vibrant immigrant communities shaping post-war Britain. Through captivating rhythms and soulful melodies, it encapsulates tales of migration, resilience, and the quest for identity. Each track is a portal to a bygone era, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of London's multicultural heritage, making it a timeless musical treasure.
