Review: Originally out as an eight-pronged cassette release, Alberich's Nato Uniformen has been stripped down to a nineteen-track vinyl release by the incorrigible Hospital Productions, Vatican Shadow's very own playground of doom and gloom. We don't like to overuse the word "conceptual", but with this double LP, it truly applies...and in the best of ways! Both the artwork and the title name fit so perfectly with the overall sense of dread brought out by the music's desolate, grey-scale soundscapes and swirls of power electronics. There's no way that we can go through all of it for you in words, but the best way to describe it is simply as 'sonic warfare'. Stripped beats, cavernous drones and menacing bursts of hardware make this one of the most singular of Hospital's releases in a good while. For fans of Maurizio Bianchi and Sacher-Pelz. Don't miss it.

Review: Alberich and Lussuria are no strangers to the deep, treacherous caves of the Hospital Productions portfolio, and we couldn't think of a pair more suited to the catalogue than these two shadowy characters. Classed as ambient/drone, we think that the duo's sound travels much deeper than that and in fact, we would place this sort of material in the same bracket as noise artists like Robert Turman or Aaron Dilloway. "Continuum" is an unsettling affair, a bundle of drones moving stealthily across a landscape of solitary distortion, and both "Antechamber" and "Anti-Renaissance" do their best to increase the momentum. "Untenable" opens the B-side with a dark cloud of sonics floating in mid-air, whereas "Alabaster" drowns in its own cool, meditative wave of smoke, and "Voice Of The Dagger" enters the abyss with the help of some truly cinematic swarm of unsettling, and beautifully archaic synths.

Review: Clay Rendering are Mike and Tara Connelly, a rather magnificent couple who share a passion for apocalyptic sounds. The former is an ex-member of the sinister Wolf Eyes clan and the latter, a member of The Haunting - what a match. The couple return to Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions with foreboding four-tracker spanning love, hatred and absolute insanity. The title track is a slow-weaving drone piece, spiced-up with a dash of noise, while "Temple Walking" is less abstract, more beat-driven but equally fit for an insane asylum. Over on the flipside, "The Pest" is a guitar-laden, FX-drenched jam, whereas "Myyrh Is Rising" could most aptly be described as 'cathedralic doom metal' and if that doesn't make sense to you, you'll just have to check it out for yourself. Fernow goes in for the kill once again....

Review: For his last outing on Hospital Productions, Nine Inch Nails collaborator Alessandro Cortini utilized just two pieces of equipment: a Roland MC-202 and a delay pedal. For this follow-up, he's expanded his toolbox a little, supplementing those hardware pieces with two further machines: a Roland TR-606 and TB-303. Musically, Risveglio inhabits a similar space to its predecessor, with Cortini creating blurry, fluid dreamscapes built around semi-rhythmic loops, distorted chords and fuzzy ambient textures. Listeners may struggle to spot the TB-303 - most often used to create ragged waves of intense electronics - such is the unique way in which Cortini manipulates it. Regardless, the Italian's post-industrial, half-awake soundscapes are thoroughly mesmerizing.

Review: The addition of Alessandro Cortini to Hospital Productions with this Sonno LP can be lined alongside Ron Morelli and Ninos Du Brasil as examples of Dominick Fernow's enduring capacity to surprise as a label owner. Fans of Nine Inch Nails will be more than familiar with the Bologna-born Cortini who served the long running American industrial rock band twice, though more recently the musician has gained a degree of prominence for his recordings under his own name and the Sonoio guise. The latter project in particular has seen Cortini experiment prolifically with the Buchla synth to celebrated results, making the chosen methods for his Hospital debut somewhat of a departure. Sonno consists of nine truly immersive recordings made in unspecified hotel rooms using a Roland MC202 synthesiser and a delay pedal with the results described as quite aptly as "beautifully restrained yet oddly emotive".

Review: New York's Lee Bannon has many monikers. Originally from Northern California his work spans a range of sonic realms and includes influences from hip-hop, jungle, ambient and drone. Dedekind Cut 'draws out the dark calm of Coil, in the guise of a modern approach to noise, new age and ambient music. American Zen is both the first physical release and first to bare the 'ded000' code identifying the release number in the catalogue. Originally made strictly for tape release on Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions, it's an impressive whole and not for the faint of heart. From the chilling drone of "American Zen 1" through to the harsh industrial noise of "Deja Vu, In Reverse" and the truly frightening "Falsom Lake 04" which was previously only available on the cassette version.

Review: American industrial/noise producer Matthew Folden has been a longtime staple of Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions camp. Matter of fact, he first appeared on our our radar with the Back In EP on Fernow's now dormant diffusion imprint Bed Of Nails back in 2015. Babe Beer Bar Car compiles Folden's work between 2012 and 2015, previously only available on cassette format. Various greyscale experiments in minimalist electronics await you here: from the seething and saturated slow motion pulsations of "Somewhere In Miami" or "So Sue Me" to evocative ambient textures like "Loudmouth" or Zip It". There's even moments of what could even be considered IDM (ish!) like on "White Lighter."

Review: Dominick Fernow, known in certain circles by the name of Vatican Shadow or Prurient, is a master of spotting new and interesting talent in and around the doom-electronic-noise spectrum. Exoteric Continent aka Anomia co-founder Arau Sala is one such talent who originally appeared on the UK's Opal Tapes and who was then hit up by Fernow for the digital-only release, Referendum. That was one of 2014's highlights for us and then man has thankfully decided to issue it on vinyl format, issuing those nine slices of sonic insanity on good ol' wax. From "Percentage" to "Agrupacio Civil", there's a notable element of dub within the electronic cacophony taking up the majority of the space. The brittle percussion is delayed, morphed and rendered loose in all places. Check it out, this is tipped!

Review: Hospital Productions is a non-stop operation and following this year's long-players from Alessandro Cortini, Ninos Du Brasil and Ron Morelli, Vatican Shadow's latest swoop is this ambient album produced with Function. The seven-track LP was recorded between Berlin and New York, and it's described as best suited for after-hours home listening, but whether you really want to listen to this after a big night is up to you. Indeed "A Year Has Passed" and "A Year Has Gone By" are downbeat and melancholic, whereas other tracks lean more towards industrial ambient, similar to fellow Hospital artist Lussuria's work. "The Nemesis Flower" is a darker highlight while "Red Opium" and "Bejewelled Body" is where the house and techno beats lie.

Review: Here's something to excite those of an experimental techno bent: a collaborative set from veteran producer Function and drone/industrial sort Vatican Shadow. Given the qualities' of both producers, it's perhaps unsurprising that Games Have Rules is rather good. Like any good collaboration, it tempers the more outlandish aspects of each producer's work, delivering a set bristling with icy textures, bittersweet ambience, dreamy atmospherics and, perhaps most pleasing of all, sprawling techno (see the brilliant "Bejewelled Body"). Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the crystalline mood of "A Year Has Passed" (reminiscent of Selected Ambient Works era Aphex Twin) to the murky textures and spooky electronics of "The Nemesis Flower".

Review: Former Napalm Death member Justin Broadrick first brought his typically dystopian JK Flesh project to Hospital Productions label late last year, serving up a bleak and pitch-black EP of distorted industrial rhythms, droning noise and clandestine electronics. This album expands on the urban decay theme first explored on that set, delivering brutalist tracks that uneasily shift between redlined, concrete-clad techno, distorted dub, Meat Beat Manifesto style breakbeat, twisted IDM and hypnotic industrial funk. Despite the subject matter and the producer's noisenik reputation, Suicide Estate is actually fairly accessible, and certainly far more accessible than some would expect. It's bleak and dark, of course, but there are flitting rays of light and poignant moments amongst the peeling paintwork, damp walls and broken lifts.
