Review: Following Hot Casa's reissue of his second album The Black Isaiah Of Africa in 2017, here comes the long awaited repress of Kingsley Aigbologa Bucknor's incredible debut album. Rarer than hen's teeth, known to pass hands for triple figures and so vibrantly freeform and longform; both extensive 15+ minute tracks take up a side each as Kings and his 16 player / 10 backing singer Afrodisk Beat 79 troupe lay down two crisp Afrofunk trips. Singular.

Desert Wind (4:07)
Review: Hot Casa France reissue a sultry drum workout from master Turkish darbouka player Yasar Akpence's 2004 album 'Passion Percussion'. 'Desert wind' layers unbelievably tight darbouka trills and phrases over a pulsing, almost dembow-esque core, making for a perfect Balearic DJ tool for any occasion. We can imagine this one bookending hypnotic techno wormholes in a small hours Donato Dozzy set, with its wide stereo drum intrusions and tight production longing to be aired off a suitably weighty soundsystem. Truly chameleonic and compelling music!

Review: Hot Casa's latest deluxe reissue should delight all those who enjoy Afro-funk fusion from the early 1980s. It comes from Togolese artist Itadi K Bonney and is thoroughly obscure even by Afro reissue standards (if you can find an original copy for sale, it will cost you the best part of L900). Bonney and his backing band recorded and released it in 1983, filling the album with rich political soul, William Onyeabor style Moog motifs and thrillingly loose fusions of U.S funk, boogie and contemporaneous African dancefloor styles. This edition not only comes with an insert containing a rare interview with the now sadly departed singer, but also two previously unreleased tracks. In other words, it should be an essential purchase.

Red Light (Peter Solo) (3:35)
Review: An instantly recognisable voice in the funk sphere for over 60 years, you can't talk about Togolese music with mentioning the funkmaster and 'King of Gazo' himself Roger Damawuzan. Containing an unreleased single from his upcoming album 'Seda', this double single is funk so heavy it'll weigh you down. 'Fine Fine' is a slick and fast-paced track of contentment - leave the man alone he said he's fine! - and 'Red Light' is a squeaky clean showcase of what made Damawuzan so popular in Togo with his carefree and charismatic attitude. All you funk lovers out there have got to give this a spin.

Fontaine (Drink Drink) (4:04)
Review: DjeuhDjoah and Lieutenant Nicholson are French composers and Afro-soul singers whose 2016 album on Hot Casa is a perfect summer soundtrack. This cheeky 7" actually features two of the standout tunes from their equally essential 2019 album Aimez Ces Aires. 'El Nino' is a a real summer classic, with falsetto vocals singing about how hot it is with big horn leads and funky drums getting that party started. 'Fontaine (Drink Drink)' is a deeper cut with xylophone sounds, hand claps and a warm, organic feel that is again set to get temperatures rising this summer.

Review: Even by the standards of Afro-soul and Afro-funk reissues, Deke Tom Holland's late '70s and early '80s releases are pretty darn obscure. The Ivory Coast artist apparently released four albums in his native country, flitting between two long forgotten labels. Here, France's Hot Casa label aims to put Deke Tom Holland back in the spotlight by gathering together four of his finest songs. Choose between the shuffling, Tony Allen style grooves, effervescent vocals and mazy synthesizer solos of "Na You", the horn-heavy, disco-era Afro-soul goodness of "Beant", the hard-spun Chic guitars and positive Afro-funk vibes of "Demonde" and "Denou", an altogether punchier cut rich in warm bass and jazzy electric piano solos that could well be the EP's strongest moment (and that's saying something).

Review: Destination Lagos, 1978: Cameroon bass player and lead singer Brigth Engelberts laid down this widescreen funk adventure which consequently suffered a criminally low pressing and faded to obscurity until 2009 when Hot Case did the honourable thing. Now repressed for those who missed out, it's an experience that's hard to forget; from the US funk homage "Civilisation In The World" to the heart-tugging yearns of "Free Me Now" via the vibrant Afrobeat horn refrains on "Let Me Near Them Say", it's stood the test of time with real clarity and relevance. Climaxing with the psychedelic folky charms of the brilliantly titled "Shifty Hand Woman", Brigth's adventure should be enjoyed by all.

Review: Joni Haastrup's classic, cosmic disco LP is among the best of the best in terms of Afrobeat. What is particularly special about it is its 1978 release date - this was miles ahead of everyone else at that stage of African disco music - and the fact that it was the only piece of music to be released under the artist's real name. There is not much we can say about this absolute gem of an album, apart from the fact that it should not be missing from your own shelves, or DJ bag, for that matter. On the latter point, these six tunes are perfect for just about any situation requiring a dance. This is top Afrobeat beat music in all its glory. NOT to be missed. Warmly recommended...

Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Review: K. Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas was a cult and rotating cast of musicians from Ghana. They were early champions of the famous highlife sound and in 1980 they put out Me Da A ?nnda, a four track suite that will cost you a hefty amount on second hand markets. But this reissue will change all that. The original tracks and art are included and it is the charming percussive clatter and seductive guitar lines of 'Daben Ni' that get things underway with plenty of trademark horns. 'Me Yee Owu Den' is another sweet jam, with tangy rhythms and those lead horns lifting your spirits before the extended 'Nye Mea' works you into a spaced out mind state.

It is now reissued for the first time in more than 42 years since it was first put out and still pounds utterly fresh and relevant. Its fusion of soul and jazz, hi-life and afro drums is boosted by the Vis a Vis band. The result is four immersive tracks that among to strike spiritual and emotive notes as well as being hugely danceable. This real masterpiece has been remastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery and is a true afro treasure.

Woman Nature (16:07)
Mr Debtor (14:43)
Review: Naturally, the great Fela Kuti or more recently, people like William Onyeabor usually get all the praise when it comes to the topic of Afrobeat and anything remotely funky from central Africa. However, what many fail to realise is the sheer quantity of untapped gold deep in the heart of those countries and King Bucknor Jr is inarguably very much a part of that hidden treasure chest. 1979's African Woman, also known as The Black Isaiah Of Africa, is a record that holds a mythical status for many, and it's safe to say that for the few lucky diggers who own an original copy of this record, Hot Casa's reissue probably isn't that welcome. However, how could anyone ever deny a fellow music lover of a tune like "Woman Nature" or "Mr Debtor"? The former owns the sexiest percussion roll available on our charts at the moment, not to mention the King's raw and loose vocals, whereas the latter heads deeper into the groove, coming through with a beautifully dubwise groove to fill the air. So hot!

Review: Nigeria's Tee Mac has been a digger's favourite ever since his tunes came out in the 1980s, and alongside the likes of Willian Onyeabor, he has been one of the driving forces behind his country's afro-rock and afro-beat mania. France's Hot Casa have masterfully put together a compilation containing his best tunes, originally out on the Party Fever LP. This is all quality, but just to give you a little taster, you have the inimitable funk destroyer that is "Nepa",Tee Mac's notorious "Talk To Me" bombshell - a tune that verges closely to proto-house - the sublimely washed-out "Stay On Me", and the painfully hummable swings of "Wake Up". Recommended.

Review: 'Eki Bis' is a quintessential example of fresh modern-day soukous and zouk. Despite being first laid down by Congolese singer Lutchiana Mobulu in 1989, the single sounds just as fresh and relevant for the present day as it did back then, reissed via Hot Casa here for a crisp and infectious new reversion. The title track is emblematic of this enough, with high-pitched guitar noodlings and ecstatic raps delivered over a sizzlingly-hot beat skillet. Julien Lebrun's edit catapults the track into subtle space, adding careful echoes and refractions.

Review: Hot Casa's latest deep dive into the Afro-funk archives takes us to the Democratic Republic of Congo at the turn of the 1970s. It was here, in a nation brimming with post-independence confidence, that a funk band called The Soul Kids briefly burned brightly. This reissue of their impossible to find debut album should be essential listening for anyone interested in West African funk. It contains a mixture of sizzling self-penned instrumentals and inspired cover versions of American funk standards, including a memorable take on Wilson Pickett's cover of Beatles classic "Hey Jude" and two fantastic versions of James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag".

Review: This is a glorious example of the highlife sound with some extra digital funky touches that really make it pop. The Ghanian producer Frimpong Manso is the man who made it so when it was recorded back in 1987 at the Ghana Films Studio in Accra. The title Boafo Ne Nyame can be translated as "Helper is god" and the super sweet voice of K. Adusei is the lead vocalist who helps lodge these tunes deep in your soul. Each of the five tracks goes long and is filled with hypnotic hi-life grooves, deeply funky guitar licks that bring plenty to each tune, and tight drumming that oils the whole affair nicely.

Review: Owhaaou features four cuts taken from the incredibly hard-to-find and obscure Metamorphose album that was released back in 1984 by this legendary Benin soul star. He blends rare Afrofunk with digital soul as evidenced by the recent reissue of Dans le Tchink System. Now this label celebrates his work once more with this futuristic and expansive new record which was recorded on 24 analogue track channels with skilled backing musicians such as Hilaire Penda on bass, Poly Rythmo de Cotonou's Daniel Bentho and more. The title track is a big disco party starter then there are more sombre moods on 'Magnifiec' and a silky edit of 'Zemidjan' before 'Mi Tchinker' gets that booty shaking.

Review: Selected rare Togolese recordings featured here from between 1971 to 1981. According to label Hot Casa, finding these tracks and their rights holders was quite the task, involving numerous trips all over the west African country bordered by Ghana , Benin and Burkina Faso. They have selected 13 tracks, which they've charmingly described as 'a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country's recording history'. Highlights on this compilation not limited to: Akofa Akoussah's sultry and bittersweet crooning on "I Tcho Tchass", the life affirming Afrobeat vibes of Aime Orchis Mathey's very obscure "Tralala Vo Dou" and of course the very funky and groovy hoedown that is Adamah & Agbote's "Dzo Le Gbo Nye" .
