Magic Of Human
Review: Simoncino's newly minted Hotmix imprint laid down their mission statement on their first few Underground Dance EPs, enlisting the likes of Marcello Napoletano, Nicholas and Joe Drive to contribute tracks. Emboldened by the warm reception these various artist EPS received, Hot Mix step up their game with the first in a series of solo releases, with UK producer Kurt Baggaley at the helm for the five track Magic Of Human EP. From the opening strains of "Population Too Late" it's clear Baggaley is trying to marry utopian ideals with vintage house rhythms, an approach he carries off with aplomb. The final title track in particular resonates with a fuzzy, bleep laden sensation. An intriguing release which bodes well for a label that has EPs on the way from Marcello Napoletano and Gene Hunt!

Review: Kurt Baggaley you ask? You may have known him back in the early 2000s as Scape One: the legendary UK electro producer. He appears in this instance on Nick Anthony Simoncino's HotMix imprint and it's fitting really. Under his own name he makes emotive deep house in the vein of Larry Heard (such as on the melancholic opening track "Almost Untouched") or the high-tech soul style of Detroit as heard on "Emotion Chip". On the flip we have two dreamy and restrained trips on the more minimal tip like the atmospheric slow burner "Close Company" or the rich and lush synth tapestries explored on "Family Resemblance". Tip!

Lost Groove (3:55)
Puffed Tribe (7:30)
Badlands Oasis (5:59)
Review: For the latest release on his pleasingly nostalgic Hotmix Records imprint, house retro-futurist Simoncino has turned to Benedek, a Los Angeles-based producer who's atmospheric, synth-heavy cuts sit somewhere between glassy-eyed Balearic house, mid-80s New York proto-house, deep boogie and Mark Seven's more sun-soaked productions. He's delivered a pleasingly strong EP too, with highlights including the subtly bleep sporting Paul Simpson-meets-Charles Webster flex of 'Puffed Tribe', the glistening guitars, glossy synths and sunset-friendly colour of 'After Midnyte', and the more spacey and psychedelic - but no less tactile and melodious - early morning shuffle of 'Badlands Oasis'.

Review: The original only dropped last year but it soon sold out so here comes a reissue of this gem from Simoncino, known for his nostalgic house vibes, in collaboration with Benedek, a Los Angeles-based producer whose music blends atmospheric synths with elements of Balearic, proto-house, and deep boogie. The EP is a strong offering with standout tracks like 'Puffed Tribe' which combines Paul Simpson and Charles Webster influences, 'After Midnyte,' with its glistening guitars and glossy synths, and 'Badlands Oasis,' offering a more spacey and psychedelic vibe. Benedek's style bridges the gap between retro and futuristic, delivering a collection of tracks that evoke both nostalgia and anticipation.

Frame 288
Review: Simoncino's label HotMix Records hits up Italian producer Joe Drive for the label's fifth and final release of 2012, rounding off a stellar year that's seen Marcello Napoletano, Merwyn Sanders (of Virgo Four fame) and house fetishist Steve Summers all grace the label. Tribal grooves, shaking tambourines and repetitive house chords drunk on LFO intoxicate "Geb", whereas "Sguasi Revelation" employs bleating vocals, abstract house drums and swaggering synths. "The Lost Player" hits the tropical and broken beat tip while "Early Light" is an uplifting and retrospective house classic in the making. "Frame 228" sounds like a leftfield fusion of Pepe Bradock's "Deep Burnt" with the drums and off kilter expression of Theo Parish's "Slowly Surely".

Review: In response to reports of 'Discogs sharks' prowling around this deep house classic from Gene Hughes, HotMix have gone ahead and reissued the eureka moment that is 'Track Show (Volume One)'. Paring things back to their barest bones, the early-nineties nuage and prolific house artist, whose other monikers included Rawthenticity and Bluejeans, first released this six-tracker under the name Bluemoon Prodiuctions in 1990 via Code Blue. The first track might be deceptive to some, as its simplistic production is arguably the least endearing of the bunch, combining only a kick drum, bassline, pluck and stream train whistle; tracks two 'O' and 'U' quickly unravel these assumptions with a beautiful dyadic take on Italo and stringy-deep house respectively. Meanwhile, on the B-sider 'S', we're met with an early example of lo-fi house, while an angsty electro mood is heard on 'E; a final coup de grace is then delivered on the crepuscular piano highlight, 'Night', which strikes the perfect thematic balance between sexiness and misery.

All The Same
Review: Irish house producer Lerosa appears on Simoncino's HotMix label for the first time after a 10 year career that's seen his music released with Uzuri, Quintessentials, Millions Of Moments and Ostgut Ton. Here he provides a four-track EP of varied house styles that only someone who knows what they're doing could provide. "Inverted Castle" has a beefy staccato bassline with deep flecks of piano chords to offset the heat, while "Tango" is minimal and deep but jacking. It's quality Chicago house at its most elemental on the B-side with "Horatio" while "All The Same" throbs with a bubbly pulse while filtered keys and chord progressions are played by what sounds like a pianist trapped underwater.

Set Your Free
Area 1917
Review: The ninth release on Nick Anthony Simoncino's Hot Mix label welcomes esteemed Japanese DJ and producer Ken Sumitani into the fold for his debut release under the Mono Village name. Already well established in deep house and techno circles thanks to his work as stereociti for Mojuba, Sumitani unveils the Mono Village name in auspicious style with the three track Fixation EP. The lead title track sees Sumitani draw from a abstract deep house palette, with the titular vocal hook the one overt nod to classicist Chicago house ideals. In contrast "Set Your Free" sounds every bit as raw as those late 80s productions that helped shape house music as we know it, whilst "Area 1917" plunges deep into the hypnotic end of the house spectrum.

Realm Of Ideas
When I Think Of The Heavens
The Awakening
Higher Dimensional
Review: In 2013 Simoncino's HotMix imprint is on fire, with Brad Peterson's debut adding to the flame. Beginning with "Realm Of Ideas", the track blends textures of Steven Tang's Obsolete Music Technology project with the squiggly lined arrangements of Drexciya-tinged electro, while minimal, but impressionable drum and basslines offer an understated strength to the piece. The housey vibes of "When I Think Of The Heavens" deliver something a little more traditional, with punchy snares adding the slightest touch of jack. "The Awakening" provides italo synths in a production that sees Peterson boldly craft some schooled deep house, while the sparseness of "Higher Dimensional" completes a release that aims at keeping heads down rather than hands up.

Jungle Dream (Ron Trent remix part I) (9:59)
Jungle Dream (Ron Trent remix part II) (10:00)
Review: First released way back in 2011 on one of Nick Anthony Simoncino's fine EPs for Metamatics, 'Jungle Dream' smartly joined the dots between turn-of-the '90s Italian dream house and the more jacking end of late '80s Chicagoan house. It was always ripe for remixing, such was the mixture of attractive musical elements on show, and we can't think of anyone more suited to the task than deep house legend Ron Trent. On the A-side 'Part I' remix, Trent tiptoes the fine line between attractive dreaminess and percussively weighty late-night house voodoo - all layered drums, groovy bass, whispered vocal snippets, languid lead lines and immersive pads. He goes for a more expansive, sunrise-ready sound - complete with fluid, Balearic house keyboard solos, sultry synth strings and sun-kissed chords - on the flipside 'Part II' mix.

Cosmic Paradise (Larry Heard Underground remix) (8:12)
Warriors Dance (Ron Trent remix) (9:38)
Review: Given that Nick Anthony Simoncino's take on house has always been nostalgic and retro-futurist in nature, frequently paying tribute to the '80s and '90s work of key American producers, it seems fitting that his latest 12" boasts rubs of catalogue tracks from two deep house icons, Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Heard steps up first with a version of 'Cosmic Paradise' that peppers a tactile, hardware-driven groove with sparkling, freestyle/Italo-disco style synth riffs and plenty of the Chicagoan's fluid piano motifs. Trent delivers his interpretation of 'Warriors Dance', offering a Latin-tinged drum machine rhythm, spacey chords for days, attractive synth sounds aplenty and echoing, dubbed-out electronics. Both reworks are, as you'd expect from such giants of deep house, utterly gorgeous.

Where Are You? (original mix)
Where Are You? (Nicholas remix)
Where Are You? (Max Essa remix)
Where Are You? (K&M remix)
Review: Riding high on the renewed interest in his ventures from the earliest days of house music, Merwyn Sanders brings a fresh track to the table in the poignantly titled "Where Are You?" and it's as emotive and powerful as any of the original Virgo Four output. Warm basslines, mournful lead synths and gentle but driving drums abound, just like you'd want them to, setting the scene for a string of remixers to pay their respects. Nicholas opts for a more proggy synth line and more detail in the beats, but keeps things very much on the straight and narrow, while Max Essa gets a brooding, cosmic disco tint to his own interpretation. K&M are the clear winners in the remix stakes though, bringing a stunning, swinging broken beat and lamenting Rhodes notes to bear on the winsome melodics.
